LeBron James Gives Cavs ‘Edge’ in Free Agency

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Larry King, the iconic, ancient CNN news personality, nabbed the first media interview with the most hyped free agent in NBA history since the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season came to an end. LeBron and Larry sat down at James’ home yesterday, with the interview set to air on Friday night (9pm, est.)

Based on the promotional clips and quotes released by CNN, James (as expected) didn’t give away much about what his plans for the future are, but did hint that Cleveland has “the edge” in re-signing him.

And I suppose, that is newsworthy:

Two-time NBA MVP LeBron James says the Cleveland Cavaliers — his only club in his seven pro seasons — will have an “edge” when they try to keep the likely free-agent-to-be from leaving this summer.

In an interview scheduled to air on CNN Friday night, Larry King asked James whether the Cavaliers have an edge to retain the Ohio native.

“Absolutely,” James said. “Because … this city, these fans, I mean, have given me a lot in these seven years. And, you know, for me, it’s comfortable. So, I’ve got a lot of memories here. And so it does have an edge.”

The Plain Dealer has obtained the interview in its entirety, and posted a lot of it in transcript form on their website. But once again, do not expect any groundbreaking new information.

LeBron James is going to stick to his own, murky script until July 1st, and we will all continue to tune in. Like it or not.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? He either stays in Cleveland or not.

I don’t know bout you guys but if I lived in Cleveland I would probably be p*ssed to death about this c*ckt3asing, especially the way he mailed it in against the Celts.

@Joel O: If you lived in Cleveland you would be a fan of all our horrendous sports teams. When you put up with that much losing for so long, Lebron’s lingering free agency is easy to deal with. You just don’t understand.

@MooButter: Hey man. I’ve lived in Toronto for a third of my (admittedly not that long so far) life and my happiest, proudest times as a basketball fan of our local squad were spent cheering guys like JYD and Alvin Williams chase after loose balls with our team down 20. So I uh feel some of your pain.

  • Kendrick is God

aint no loyalty in sport these days i say he leaves

Ya id rather have a team with no Lebron than have my team snatched away to Oklamhoma city, (like my Sonics were), all we have left are the loser Mariners and the severely mediocre SeaC*cks. So MooButter as you once said to me “cry me a river”.

Having an “edge” means nothing if he leaves.

  • Robb

    He’s leaving.

ha, all the top free agents are going to toronto

  • LD

They just called him the Bret Favre of the NBA on First Take. Quit asking him, he isn’t going to tell you!

  • jay

Oh they have an edge….& he’ll push them off of it once he signs elsewhere.

  • Chris

I’m am the hugest Knicks fan, but things are look bleak. The way this is most likely going to play out — Lebron stays in Cleveland. Bosh joins Wade in Miami. Amare, who was waiting for Lebron’s choice decides to stay in Phoenix. Dirk say alright Mark, lets give it another go.

The Knicks are left with a choice between Carlos Boozer and Joe Johnson… or nothing. Eh….

I’ll take Joe for about 8-10 mil (he’s not worth max). Carlos can stay where he’s at.

Give me Joe and Rudy Gay and a bunch of scrubs til next year. I’ll wait for a CP3 trade and Carmello next year.

  • Rich

an edge? he could give em more than an edge. Daggers have Edges, and they are prone to stabbing ppl in the back. I hope wherever he signs is okay with a 2 year contract with a player option

  • Clay

All of these free agents love attention given to them. I’m sick of it. Let us savor the players still playing.

30 mil is a decent edge. But it means nothing. I dont care about lebron til he signs somewhere. All this is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If I were LeBron I’d stay in Cleveland. If he leaves, yes, he might get more money, but come on….Cleveland is his home, and he gets so much love from that place and those fans.

    ^^^^^^
everyone gives lebron love, is there another argument?

from now on Lebron should just sign 1 year contracts and every year there will be this big huha about where he will be playing the next year

  • All Day

I’m sick and tired of all this LeBron talk. LeBron, go sit your @ss down somewhere and shut the hell up until the 1st of July. Bring on the NBA Finals!!!

  • All Day

Where the hell is the thread breaking down the key matchups of game 1 of the NBA Finals? SLAM is slippin…too busy huggin LeBron’s nuts!

  • Diesel

I don’t understand why people continue to grow angrier and angrier with Lebron. I’m not sure what people are looking for from him. This is the first time he’s done an interview since the Cavs lost so its not like he’s out there trying to make himself a media focal point…the media is doing that on their own. The guy has been about as tight lipped as he can be. To the people that say “Lebron loves the attention” – what options does he have to stop all the hoopla? Its not like the dude can just come out right now and say “I’m going to this team next year”…I mean he could, but why would he before he’s met with all the teams and gathered all the information? So from what I’m gathering – people are mad because Lebron won’t just hurry up already and make an uninformed decision, that will affect a large portion of his life, so that we can stop wondering about where he’s going. Yeah he’s a real prick.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com Clay

No Diesel. It’s that LeBron does an interview that is set to air during an NBA Finals game. He knows what he’s doing. He’s trying to upstage the games. Whether or not he’s accomplishing his goal is up to every basketball fan.

  • Jose

This honestly is worse than Brett Favre, its gone on just as long as Brett too

  • The Philosopher

@Clay: The day The King got drafted, he was set to go #1, everyone was exalting in expectation and excitement, the basketball masses were at attention, for The King was about to arrive. What does the legendary Kobe Bryant do? He steals the spotlight by proclaiming his opting out of his Laker contract, and what not. On Draft Night. Kobe was upstaging LeBron that night.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com Clay

Nicely noted Philosopher. Others players would do the same as LeBron if they were viewed as highly as he is and could attract the same amount of attention. It is low of Kobe if he did indeed do that on draft night. Young kids are about to get there moment by being drafted and are outshined by Kobe. I’m just ready to watch the games, not speculate about who is going where with whom.

  • JoeMaMa

LeBron James should go to Toronto. Because I want him to.

  • French Toast

He needs to go to the Clippers. It could be so much fun !!! With Dwade of course !!!
