Mo Williams & Delonte West Placed on Trading Block

by Myles Brown/@mdotbrown

Even after the firing of head coach Mike Brown and the abrupt resignation of GM Danny Ferry, it appears the Cleveland Cavaliers still aren’t done cleaning house.

“These talks are being piloted, sources said, by new general manager Chris Grant. However, the decision to determine Williams’ value could mostly be the result of the two weeks of in-depth conversations led by Gilbert on the state of the team. The products of those talks resulted in the firing of Mike Brown and Danny Ferry’s decision not to seek another contract.

It is not assured that the Cavs will make a deal. This is the time of year when teams amp up trade discussions prior to the draft. Last year, the Cavs traded for Shaquille O’Neal the day before the draft but started the discussions for that deal in the first week of June.”

This is clearly a move meant to appease the leagues preeminent free agent, LeBron James, but it remains to be seen if emptying the cupboard without any suitable replacements will be enough for Cleveland to satisfy their superstar.

mo williams is kinda buns in the playoffs

  • The Philosopher

Cleveland is doing what they are SUPPOSED to be doing. Period. They are not going to let this thing turn into a Barry Sanders kind of deal.

Mo Williams did what with LeBron’s mom?

  • Yesse

I’m surprised they wan’t to get rid off Mo, even though he isnt himself in the playoffs. I’m sure LeBron wanted Delonte to be out of Cavs, lol.

  • vanillagorrila

not being able to perform in the playoffs is a pretty big flaw in a championship contender’s “2nd best” player

Mo Williams to the Raps for Jose! Common now.

  • LA Huey

    *yawn*

  • matt

Deltone is no surprise to anyone who reads internet gossip sites…mo needs to come home to utah. we miss him here.

  • http://banksitin.blogspot.com/ vmcb

    lol ya jose for mo

  • underdog

My opinion is that, without LeBron Mo could play much better basketball, because he’d have the ball in his hands much more.

Excellent work, Myles, that last graph especially. If I hadn’t had you to explain it for me, I might’ve thought this was actually a move to “improve the team.” Whenever I’m on the verge of forgetting how selfish he is to want better teammates, you are there without fail to remind me.
    Thank you for that.

    @ underdog
my opinion is mo would be better with a better coach
any coach can win 50-60 games a year with the cavs it really comes down to coaching in playoffs when you play a team 7 times in a row
mo could still play at a high level w/lbj just with another coach

Id like to see bron end up in utah. Bron and deron would own. Bron in sloans offense would get 12 easy points every game just moving without the ball, hed get 35 every game easy

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com CHRIS

lol honestly what kind of value are u gonna get for these guys???

  • Harvey

The Cavs need to sign a guy that can sell tickets if they want this franchise to survive, once LeBron leaves(which he will) then there going to be in the dumps, I say sign Allen Iverson for 5 mill let him play his way and sell tix, get some wins maybe make the playoffs, but again AI might not have anything left.

  • don

mo needs the ball to be effective i think.

  • Scottie Pimpin

cleaning house aint the word, i think they’re scrubbing floors with bleach.

  • LD

If the Cavs were smart, they would relocate the entire franchise to New York, LA, or Chicago. Big city, and can offer LeBron the most money.

  • Atrain

who would want either of them?

  • ripslam

BTW, why is this article on the homepage twice?

  • vtrobot

i don’t how they could let either of those two go.

  • Shem

The cavs need a scoring guard in the backcourt and a defensive guard in the backcourt. I think Parker can work, but they need a more consistent guard that can keep up with Rondo.

Too bad Mo isn’t a free agent, he could get a max deal from the Knicks.

  • Fat Lever

Mo is a bum and a guy that comes up short when it counts. Yea, I’m sure teams will be beating down Cleveland’s door to get him.

  • MikeC.

I wonder where Delonte and Lebron’s mom will be living next season.

  • Tony

Im thinking Delonte should stay in Clevand, and Williams should be traded for a veteran big man that could be a good role player

  • Chris

They need to trade for Bosh. Mo Williams is the only real true starter they have to bargain with. West is a psychological mess. Mo, West, Varijau (sp?) for Bosh and most likely Turkaglu (sp?). Turk because they will need to match salaries, and he wants to leave Toronto, anyways.

The only way Bron Bron stays is if he has another all-star to play with. Cleavland fans just better hope that players want to go to Cleveland.

  • dave24

Hey since 76ers are probably looking at Turner any way… why not try to swing mo and/or west for igoudala? they know hes no franchise guy. cleveland loses some 3 point shooting they have had but would, at least on paper, gain a lot in other ways.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

trade them both for Devin Harris. assuming Harris is not part of the Nets rebuilding plan. Mo’s 8 + Delonte’s 4 = Harris 12 a year. remember this is the last year of west’s contract and will only be guranteed 500k if waived before august 5. Nets could (and will) waive Delonte before august to again lower their cap and they could be able to sign 2 max players. mo is a great backup pg for them. Cavs would get a surefire scorer and playmaker and an all star in Harris whether James re-signs or not. that could increase both teams chances in landing bron.

  • Sparker

am i missing something? both of these guys are pretty good. mo dropped in the playoffs LAST YEAR; he seemed better than good this year but not outstanding. delonte will hit that step back in your eye any chance he gets. he plays good d and is tough, especially for his size. when i watched the cavs, i felt (and it was mentioned by cavs fans on this site) that he should be getting more minutes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

they are not good enough to at least get us past the conference finals last year and semis this year. we are all WITNESSES to that. mo is always a problem on d, so did delonte on SOME players taller than him. west is also gonna face a trial and could be suspended by the league. so i think he will surely be waived whether he stays or traded. they will surely be great on any team but won’t be enough to win a championship.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

would you really believe Lebron would resign just to come back with the same cast?

  • jumpman3224

who would possibly want to take on Mo Williams contract for what they get out of him production wise?

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

jumpman…the Knicks are always on the lookout for an over-priced tweener guard!?

  • http://www.twitter.com/retepadam Peter Nygaard

If you’re the Cavs, who do you look to pick up in exchange for Williams?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

@LD on 5:12 : if you are smart you wouldnt write anything like that and try to do some research on things first.

  • http://aol.com RUN’N'GUN21901

west is a hooper, way better than any gaurd on there team. so if they trade him it will be because the legal issues. no on the other hand should be shipped away.

  • JD

All this change will only hurt there chances of LeBron, think about it, for LeBron going to Cleveland would be like joining a whole new team, and the only other star they have is Shaq and they dont look likely to lure any other really big free agents Bron needs for a ring, so why wud he choose the Cavs who without LeBron, Mo Williams,Danny Ferry and Mike Brown are worse than practically every other team without LeBron in the market for LeBron?

  • lbj in cleveland

Mo Williams is a good 3 point shooter. No doubt about it.Delonte west on the other hand needs to be shipped if the cavs want land lebron.also the cavs need another superstar on there team.lebron and shaq wont cut it.if the cavs do trade mo willams and delonte they need to trade for someone like devin harris or chris bosh. Most likely chris bosh is goin to free agentce so the cavs woould have to release mo delonte and jamario to land chris bosh.

  • ClydeSays

What GM wants a 2nd scorer that didn’t show up in a crucial playoff series and a headcase who can’t stay on his meds & stay healthy? Unless both of their contracts expire next season….
