NBA Finals: Game 7 Live Blog

The Lakers hold off their storied rivals, the Boston Celtics, to win it all.

by Nima Zarrabi / @NZbeFree

*We’re here. I had to weave in and out of some serious traffic on the I-10 freeway and then had to shift through the redic crowds that are posting up in LA Live and outside of Staples. Ottawa’s finest citizen, Marcel Mutoni, is to my right. We’re sitting up in section 323–basically the last row up top. Surprisingly, it’s a decent view. I’m just happy and thankful to be here.

*Pregame: We’re 15 minutes away and there are still tons of empty seats. Yes, LA fans can’t even be on time for the Finals. Celts just came out and received boos about as loud as you would hear in a HS gym. Nothing to report pregame from the Lakers lockeroom. Lamar was quietly getting ready and Sasha was walking around in his Peak sneakers, hair a bit messy for those scoring at home.

*Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers’ pre game pressers were pretty tame. Some nice banter between LA Times columnist T.J. Simers and Phil. Simers: “Is this your last pre-game press conference?” Doc, was funny when asked why he’s starting Sheed. “Because he’s old,” he says. “I figured I’d go with the old guy.”

*I arrived at Staples @ about 3pm. LA Live was crawling with cats trying to find a way to creep into Staples. Security is super tight and there are cops patrolling all over. I saw two cops watching the line that led into ESPN sportszone. The line was around the block. I made sure to park my car several blocks away in order to have a sound exit strategy. We will see if it works.

*Spoke with Arash Markazi pregame. He was looking very comfortable in the front row as he watched D Fish put down some jumpers. My eyes were focused on Shelden Williams, who was putting in some work in the post. It will be interesting to see if he gets much PT tonight. Doris Burke has decided that pink is her color tonight. Ran into Sekou Smith before the game also. Great guy. Marcel introduced me. Doesn’t sound like he’s too happy with Lang for missing this trip. I told Sekou that I was more than happy to fill in for him.

*Fans screamed thru most of Christina’s anthem. Paul Pierce just threw his dice so now it’s time for the Lakers to be announced and this place is warming up.

*In the pregame presser, Phil was asked if tonight’s outcome would have an impact on whether or not he will return next season. Phil said he won’t know that until he knows the outcome. Classic.

*Jake brings up an interesting point in the comments about the Lakers making changes this offseason. It will be interesting to see what type of moves they make.

*Artest continues to creep us out offensively but Fish saves him. This place is freaking loud. Maybe it’s because I’m on the top deck tho.

*The bank is open for Sheed. He’s aggressive early and that has to be a great sign for Boston.

*Nothing was going to keep Kobe from taking that jumper after Rondo fouled him.

*C’s looking tough early. Rondo loves the right handed layup from the left board.

*We’re off to a great start. C’s are contesting everything inside. 10-9 Boston with about 6 minutes left in the 1st. How long can Andrew hold up?

*Tough call on KG. Let them play, ref.

*Even from section 323, Jesus Shuttlesworth’s jumper is wet. Big Baby with the nice up and under layup. Celtics are looking so strong early on. Nothing easy for the Lake Show tonight.

*Kendrick Perkins is very vocal and active on the bench tonight. Kobe and Pierce having some words as ball comes down court.

*Big Baby Davis is doing it.

*Heck of a 1st quarter. Very impressed with how strong Boston came out. They lead the Lakes 23-14 at the end of the 1st. Former Lakers great Michael Cooper just came out and shot a three-pointer in some type of contest to win something. He missed.

*Crowd is a little stunned. Kobe is 1-7 for 3 points. Big Baby and Sheed are filling in nicely for Perkins, giving the C’s a great lift early.

*Unique lineup for the Lakes: Bynum, Farmar, Artest, Sasha and Lamar. C’s call a timeout to adjust. 23-19, Celtics. 10 minutes left in the 1st half.

*Great foul by Jordan Farmar. If Rondo is streaking for the hoop, use a foul and hack him at halfcourt.

*Ron Artest’s breakaway layup has set this place on fire. KG nearly takes out Jack diving for loose ball. He gave everyone the word as he walked away.

*The pace has gone crazy. Knotted up at 25. Six minutes left till half. Anytime there is a chance for a rebound, bodies collide all over. “Both teams played hard.”

*3 fouls on KG. Big Baby might have to close the half. The defensive intensity is insane. 31-29 Celtics with about 3 minutes left in the half.

*Thanks for stirring up the pot, Jukai. Always appreciated. Tons of bad dancers on Lakers dance cam during break.  Things getting testy at the end of the half and refs going to the whistle. 38-34 Boston with 43 seconds left till halftime.

*Scalabrine checks in. Appleman was right.

*40-34 Celtics at the half. My Attorney Richard A. Buffum just dropped this on me: “A 90s style NY Knicks game has broken out.”

*Props to all of you rolling with us tonight, especially cats like Alan who are overseas, watching this game at a wicked hour. Celtics are already back on the floor shooting shots with about 9 minutes left in the half.

*Stoked to see that Darksaber has joined our discussion. Now we’re officially ready for the 2nd half. No doubt, Ben. Thanks for the call. Feel very lucky to be here.

*Boston coming out the gate strong, adding to their cushion. KG puts C’s up 45-35 after that 3-point play. Fans are quiet as horrible music blares.

*Feel like the Lakes took a nap at the half. Celts up 51-43 after a bucket by D Fish. Fans back in it. 6 minutes left in 3rd. Pierce nails a huge 3 for celts that give them 54-45 lead. Have no idea where this game is headed but Boston should be feeling good. Kobe Bean Bryant is struggling.

*Lamar giving the Lakers a nice lift but is it enough? Not with Sheed banking everything in.

*Lakers closing in, but Rondo continues to be a problem. Fans don’t think Shannon Brown fouled him. Of course they don’t.

*One more quarter of NBA ball for the 2009-10 season. Celtics lead the Lakes, 57-53. Hoping for an incredible finish.

*They just played the song from the movie blade and followed that up with Enter Sandman. 90s Knicks indeed.

*Big And 1 by Pau. This place is erupting. 57-55 Boston.

*Great play by KG to stop Artest, but looked like a foul. Poor D by Pau leads to easy hoop by KG. 59-55 Celtics with exactly 9 minutes left in the game.

*Omid Farhang, one of the best creative people the ad world has to offer, has joined us in comment section for final 9 minutes. Lets get it.

*Fans still believe in Kobe. He really needed those three free throws. 59-58 Boston. Tough floater by Ray-Ray. 61-58 C’s. Nate Robinson back on the floor. Couldn’t finish at the cup.

*Artest with the And 1, all Lakers fans on the feet. Sheed just picked up his 5th going over the back of Pau. He stormed off after the call. Fans were hoping he would get closer.

*2 big throws by Ray Allen. Lakers have missed 10 FTs tonight. 64-64 with 6 minutes left after a huge 3 pointer by Fisher.

*The Rockets/Knicks scenes in the OJ 30for3o documentary last night looked like this game.

*Black Mamba. Finally. 3 ball. Lakers lead 68-64 with about 5 minutes left. Staples going crazy.

*Pierce with a huge jumper from FT line. 70-66 Lakers with 3 and a half left. (And thank you Alley for the editing help. I need it. Bad.)

*KG open again underneath. Big dunk. 71-68 LA. 3 minutes.

*3 out of 4 free throws by Pau puts the Lakers up 74-68. 2 minutes.  Paul Pierce at the line.

*76-70 after the huge bucket by Pau, a layup over a few defenders. 90 seconds left in the game. C’s need a bucket badly when they come out of this timeout.

*Sheed. 3. Get it. 76-73. Wow.

*WOW. WOW. 79-76 after Jesus hits 3.

*81-76 Lakers with 25 seconds left after 2 FTs by Kobe.

*Rondo kills all chances of the Lakers covering the spread with a 3. 81-79 LA with 13 seconds left.

*It’s on Sasha and he hits 2 FTs to put LA up 83-79. Boston timeout.

*Rondo misses a 3 and the Lakers win 83-79. What a series. I think both squads should trade out jerseys world cup style. Bravo.

*That’s a wrap from Staples. Lakers get their 16th title. Heading to the pressers. Hoping to grab some champagne. Good night and good luck.

@PAPALOUKAS, The Leader: Maybe I’ll try to petition for SLAM and it’s commenters to come up with a new nickcame that fits your liking. How about “The Teacher”?

@Dru ha – if the Celtics didn’t want to have so many fouls called them, there is a simple and effective solution … stop fouling so much, and fewer foul calls will be made on you.

For all those who want to make a point that “Kobe could not have won without Pau” … relax, Kobe said it himself about a million times post game. I just MJ would have had the humility to thank Scottie Pippen so graciously, and Shaq to Kobe.

Fact: When LBJ wins a regular season MVP, Kobe Bryant wins a championship and a Finals MVP 100% of the time.

i love that quote about all the beantown players crying and hugging each other! i thought they were the toughest guys in the league .. it kind of sucks for them, this is probably bostons last really intense run in the playoffs , i dont really see those geezers being able to get through all those teams again next year. i foresee a old school lakers finals with the lakers pounding whoever makes it out of the east.

  • BostonBaller

The C’s are tough and after a series/game like that almost every player on both teams were tearing up. lol. Gasol & DFish got caught on cam crying. Like Doc said, it shows how much they cared. I like the geezers comment, I think they have been hearing that one for a couple of years now and sooner or later if you keep saying it you will be right. lol. Then again some smart fans were calling Kobe old too. Go figure. @The Philosopher no more work, it’s 3 weeks of vacation starting in 10 minutes. YES!!!

  • Sergio

For those of you that say that kobe had a bad game, or that he couldn’t win without gasol, or fish; We are Laker Fans. We don’t care if it’s kobe, artes, or fish who wins the game. We care that the Lakers won. We care that the Lakers beat the Celtics. Period.

@BostonBaller: Safe trip, bretrhen!! Safe trip!!

Joey c did a masterful job helping the right team with no obvious calls down the stretch. Way to tow the company line

GO USA!!! GO USA!!!! After an epic come back that was cut short by a ref mistake we managed to get the draw against Slovenia and to hold our luck in our hands with a win against Algeria in the last game. At the same time the hated nazis lost from Serbia while the always foolishly arrogant brits (the other extremely& perenially overrated world power in football along with the nazis) managed a new draw against Algeria LOL!!!! GO USA!!!GO USA!!!!

SUCH A PERFECT DAY !!!! After LAKERS winning and CELTICS losing,…after Artest giving a performance for the ages (especially after the game) and Gasol making me look like a prophet,…after Kobe getting to 5 (enough on this)and after the U.S. made a great comeback and the most overatted football nations in the world being humilated, after all this, JUST when you thought that it doesn’t get any better,…AT THIS EXACT MOMENT Associated Press goes on and gives us this (unintentional) comic statement of epic proportions from Anna’s personal manager: “Allen wants to come and help a team win a championship, which he’s completely capable of doing,” Gary Moore said. Come on SLAM, give us the story, make our day, one more year of the true KING and we are spending our time on loosy topics like kobe and NBA champions. Let’s get back to serious topics again, let’s talk shoe (and magazine) sales, let’s talk about ‘ANNA’ !!!!

my bad, he is already here, i’m going to honor him, thanks SLAM!!!!

  • The Philosopher

@PAPALOUKAS, The Leader: I feel the same way you do about Allen Iverson. He wrecked the game in my opinion, in a lot of ways. Especially in America. He’s got kids thinking they don’t have to practice to hone their craft.

    To the Haters,

Michael Jordan could not guard Magic. Scottie had to against Lakers in ’91. When Michael had bad/weak moments in the Finals, Scottie always “covered” for him, like Pau and Artest did last night for Kobe. Kobe is 6’6 and wrestled with Carmelo Anthony, who is much stronger and plays forward, en route to last year’s championship.

Kobe was clearly nervous and tense. The only person who wouldn’t be is Jordan.

But know this haters, Kobe is breathing on MJ’s neck. Jordan too has been human:

    1. John Paxson saved Michael’s bacon against the Lakers in ’91 with several clutch threes (go back and watch the tapes) — a la` Derek Fisher and Artest for Kobe.

    2. John Paxson (like Fisher) won the game on a three in ’93 against Phoenix.

    3. Jordan shot 5-19 and 6-19 against Seattle when guarded by 6’3 Gary Payton. GP had defensive skills, but Jordan should have used him.

    4. Against Utah, at a stage in his career similar to Kobe’s, Michael shot 15-35 TWICE. 15-35 … that is a LOT of shots!

    5. I give Michael a superior mid-range game, and larger hands, which would have helped him against Boston’s swarming defense last night. A 31, 32 year-old Jordan, with similar mileage as Kobe probably goes 9-24 last night, to Kobe’s 6-24. Not a huge difference.

    6. People who say Kobe is not close, not even top 10 are being foolish, and are obviously pissed about something.

    7. I would have loved to see if MJ had to share the ball with a dominant center. He probably would have only last through 2 rings before wreaking havoc with his massive ego.

    8. MJ is the greediest player ever; he averaged 7-8 more shots per game than Kobe in the postseason, and yet NO ONE admits this in the media. Kobe does just as much, with less. If you think I’m lyin’ check out the Phoenix series in ’93 where even Barkley jokingly commented about Jordan’s arm being tired after hoisting some 41 shots.

Kobe is in MJ’s neighborhood, and has already passed Magic, Bird, and West, who couldn’t play defense (Kobe and Fish held Allen to 3-14 last night) and lack the will that MJ or Kobe possess.

    Keep on hatin.’

I can’t believe this thread is still going….

Hey Quis, you know those soft hand-checking fouls nowadays? Yeah, Jordan would capitalize on every. single. one.

  • Exiled Zebra

Good point by s man. Those were put in so that nobody could touch or sneeze on kobe

  • bill breedley

MJ is great but let’s all stop trippin. Kobe just might top him in 2 or 3 years. They are virtually the same player. Both have crazy game, killer instinct, huge egos and ultra clutch. Mj had more hops than Kobe and had David sterns love. Kobe is more creative.

Funny how the Jordan lovers diss the teams Jordan had to justify how much better he is but when people compare greatest teams these same little kids say the 2 bulls teams were stacked in every position.

Kobe had his worst game in these playoffs. (game 2 wasn’t that great either) Everyone expected more From him. Yet he outscored and Out rebounded Every player on the Celtics roster. The same guys that are killing Kobe for his poor play have seemingly overlooked gasols worst performance wich happened in a historically pivotal game 5. Had he played just a lil better along with perhaps 1 other laker, all of the sudden it’s Lakers in six behind an epic game from Kobe. But that’s why this is a team sport, and Gasol and Artest get to feel what it’s like to be the Heros. And no complaints from Kobe, on the contrary he has never been more honest and at the same time gracious & praisworthy of his teamates than he was last night. I challenge anyone to argue that. For those who suggest that any of this somehow hurt his legacy despite the fact that they won. I pose this question: Will u judge LeBron by that same logic? He did have a far worse game when his team needed him the most, in these same playoffs, vs these same Celtics…Myself I don’t buy it. Paul Pierce said if they didn’t win this chip he Wouldn’t b mentioned in the same manner as other Celtic greats. I don’t buy that either. He’s Had a great career and IMO he’s up there right below Larry Bird and Bill Russell, that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Ray Allen on the other hand is the only guy whom I feel has hurt his legacy, by being extremely inconsistant in the playoffs. Bill Simmons has him jumping over Reggie Miller on the all-time list, rediculous, even for a gigantic Homer like Bill. Rays game is 90% screen n’ roll open jumpers so to be considered a future hall of famer based on such a limited game u better do that one thing very damn well. You can’t say enough good things about Doc Rivers who after it’s all said n’ done is the real coach of the year. But I’ll say one bad thing, calling Fisher a “flopper” was below him, lacked class and showed desperation. In other words things Phil usually does. Lol. So I forgive him, but seriously say what u want about Fish, but he quietly won the battle verses Ray Allen playing relentless defense and still hitting BIG shots when it counts the most, the guy has ice in his viens, as classy and stand up a’ guy as thier has ever been in this leauge.

Shout out to Quis, everything u said made too much sense to ever be published in a commercial mag, I love this website.

Since Michael, superstars are judged by not only how many championships they win, but with whom they win them. One of the greatest arguments for Michael’s supremacy is that, outside of Scottie Pippen, he built a dynasty with a roster full of role players (Dennis Rodman was a terrific one, to be sure, but still a role player). While guys like Ron Harper, Steve Kerr and Bill Cartwright deserve respect, they weren’t in the same class as the championship teammates of Magic and Bird.

So since Kobe came after Michael, he had to hear the “he’s never won it without Shaq” refrain earlier in his career. But Magic never heard “he never won it without Kareem.” Bird never heard “he never won it without Robert Parish and Kevin McHale.”

In each of Magic’s five championship seasons, he had a top-50 player of all time (Kareem). Granted, Kareem, although still a big-time scorer, was 38, 40 and 41 years old for the final three titles. But by then, Magic had been joined by another top-50 teammate in James Worthy, who played on the Lakers’ 1985, 1987 and 1988 title teams. That’s not to mention other great Magic teammates such as Byron Scott, Jamaal Wilkes, Norm Nixon and Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo.

Kobe obviously had an all-time superstar for his first three titles in Shaq. But for his past two rings, he’s had nothing close. Pau Gasol is a perennial All-Star, but he’s not going to make anyone’s top 50. If he and Kobe continue winning rings together, though, he’s got a shot at the Hall of Fame.

The significance of Kobe’s ability to start from scratch and build a second mini-dynasty with the Lakers can’t be overstated, and gives him an advantage over many all-time greats.
