NBA Finals: Game 7 Live Blog

The Lakers hold off their storied rivals, the Boston Celtics, to win it all.

by Nima Zarrabi / @NZbeFree

*We’re here. I had to weave in and out of some serious traffic on the I-10 freeway and then had to shift through the redic crowds that are posting up in LA Live and outside of Staples. Ottawa’s finest citizen, Marcel Mutoni, is to my right. We’re sitting up in section 323–basically the last row up top. Surprisingly, it’s a decent view. I’m just happy and thankful to be here.

*Pregame: We’re 15 minutes away and there are still tons of empty seats. Yes, LA fans can’t even be on time for the Finals. Celts just came out and received boos about as loud as you would hear in a HS gym. Nothing to report pregame from the Lakers lockeroom. Lamar was quietly getting ready and Sasha was walking around in his Peak sneakers, hair a bit messy for those scoring at home.

*Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers’ pre game pressers were pretty tame. Some nice banter between LA Times columnist T.J. Simers and Phil. Simers: “Is this your last pre-game press conference?” Doc, was funny when asked why he’s starting Sheed. “Because he’s old,” he says. “I figured I’d go with the old guy.”

*I arrived at Staples @ about 3pm. LA Live was crawling with cats trying to find a way to creep into Staples. Security is super tight and there are cops patrolling all over. I saw two cops watching the line that led into ESPN sportszone. The line was around the block. I made sure to park my car several blocks away in order to have a sound exit strategy. We will see if it works.

*Spoke with Arash Markazi pregame. He was looking very comfortable in the front row as he watched D Fish put down some jumpers. My eyes were focused on Shelden Williams, who was putting in some work in the post. It will be interesting to see if he gets much PT tonight. Doris Burke has decided that pink is her color tonight. Ran into Sekou Smith before the game also. Great guy. Marcel introduced me. Doesn’t sound like he’s too happy with Lang for missing this trip. I told Sekou that I was more than happy to fill in for him.

*Fans screamed thru most of Christina’s anthem. Paul Pierce just threw his dice so now it’s time for the Lakers to be announced and this place is warming up.

*In the pregame presser, Phil was asked if tonight’s outcome would have an impact on whether or not he will return next season. Phil said he won’t know that until he knows the outcome. Classic.

*Jake brings up an interesting point in the comments about the Lakers making changes this offseason. It will be interesting to see what type of moves they make.

*Artest continues to creep us out offensively but Fish saves him. This place is freaking loud. Maybe it’s because I’m on the top deck tho.

*The bank is open for Sheed. He’s aggressive early and that has to be a great sign for Boston.

*Nothing was going to keep Kobe from taking that jumper after Rondo fouled him.

*C’s looking tough early. Rondo loves the right handed layup from the left board.

*We’re off to a great start. C’s are contesting everything inside. 10-9 Boston with about 6 minutes left in the 1st. How long can Andrew hold up?

*Tough call on KG. Let them play, ref.

*Even from section 323, Jesus Shuttlesworth’s jumper is wet. Big Baby with the nice up and under layup. Celtics are looking so strong early on. Nothing easy for the Lake Show tonight.

*Kendrick Perkins is very vocal and active on the bench tonight. Kobe and Pierce having some words as ball comes down court.

*Big Baby Davis is doing it.

*Heck of a 1st quarter. Very impressed with how strong Boston came out. They lead the Lakes 23-14 at the end of the 1st. Former Lakers great Michael Cooper just came out and shot a three-pointer in some type of contest to win something. He missed.

*Crowd is a little stunned. Kobe is 1-7 for 3 points. Big Baby and Sheed are filling in nicely for Perkins, giving the C’s a great lift early.

*Unique lineup for the Lakes: Bynum, Farmar, Artest, Sasha and Lamar. C’s call a timeout to adjust. 23-19, Celtics. 10 minutes left in the 1st half.

*Great foul by Jordan Farmar. If Rondo is streaking for the hoop, use a foul and hack him at halfcourt.

*Ron Artest’s breakaway layup has set this place on fire. KG nearly takes out Jack diving for loose ball. He gave everyone the word as he walked away.

*The pace has gone crazy. Knotted up at 25. Six minutes left till half. Anytime there is a chance for a rebound, bodies collide all over. “Both teams played hard.”

*3 fouls on KG. Big Baby might have to close the half. The defensive intensity is insane. 31-29 Celtics with about 3 minutes left in the half.

*Thanks for stirring up the pot, Jukai. Always appreciated. Tons of bad dancers on Lakers dance cam during break.  Things getting testy at the end of the half and refs going to the whistle. 38-34 Boston with 43 seconds left till halftime.

*Scalabrine checks in. Appleman was right.

*40-34 Celtics at the half. My Attorney Richard A. Buffum just dropped this on me: “A 90s style NY Knicks game has broken out.”

*Props to all of you rolling with us tonight, especially cats like Alan who are overseas, watching this game at a wicked hour. Celtics are already back on the floor shooting shots with about 9 minutes left in the half.

*Stoked to see that Darksaber has joined our discussion. Now we’re officially ready for the 2nd half. No doubt, Ben. Thanks for the call. Feel very lucky to be here.

*Boston coming out the gate strong, adding to their cushion. KG puts C’s up 45-35 after that 3-point play. Fans are quiet as horrible music blares.

*Feel like the Lakes took a nap at the half. Celts up 51-43 after a bucket by D Fish. Fans back in it. 6 minutes left in 3rd. Pierce nails a huge 3 for celts that give them 54-45 lead. Have no idea where this game is headed but Boston should be feeling good. Kobe Bean Bryant is struggling.

*Lamar giving the Lakers a nice lift but is it enough? Not with Sheed banking everything in.

*Lakers closing in, but Rondo continues to be a problem. Fans don’t think Shannon Brown fouled him. Of course they don’t.

*One more quarter of NBA ball for the 2009-10 season. Celtics lead the Lakes, 57-53. Hoping for an incredible finish.

*They just played the song from the movie blade and followed that up with Enter Sandman. 90s Knicks indeed.

*Big And 1 by Pau. This place is erupting. 57-55 Boston.

*Great play by KG to stop Artest, but looked like a foul. Poor D by Pau leads to easy hoop by KG. 59-55 Celtics with exactly 9 minutes left in the game.

*Omid Farhang, one of the best creative people the ad world has to offer, has joined us in comment section for final 9 minutes. Lets get it.

*Fans still believe in Kobe. He really needed those three free throws. 59-58 Boston. Tough floater by Ray-Ray. 61-58 C’s. Nate Robinson back on the floor. Couldn’t finish at the cup.

*Artest with the And 1, all Lakers fans on the feet. Sheed just picked up his 5th going over the back of Pau. He stormed off after the call. Fans were hoping he would get closer.

*2 big throws by Ray Allen. Lakers have missed 10 FTs tonight. 64-64 with 6 minutes left after a huge 3 pointer by Fisher.

*The Rockets/Knicks scenes in the OJ 30for3o documentary last night looked like this game.

*Black Mamba. Finally. 3 ball. Lakers lead 68-64 with about 5 minutes left. Staples going crazy.

*Pierce with a huge jumper from FT line. 70-66 Lakers with 3 and a half left. (And thank you Alley for the editing help. I need it. Bad.)

*KG open again underneath. Big dunk. 71-68 LA. 3 minutes.

*3 out of 4 free throws by Pau puts the Lakers up 74-68. 2 minutes.  Paul Pierce at the line.

*76-70 after the huge bucket by Pau, a layup over a few defenders. 90 seconds left in the game. C’s need a bucket badly when they come out of this timeout.

*Sheed. 3. Get it. 76-73. Wow.

*WOW. WOW. 79-76 after Jesus hits 3.

*81-76 Lakers with 25 seconds left after 2 FTs by Kobe.

*Rondo kills all chances of the Lakers covering the spread with a 3. 81-79 LA with 13 seconds left.

*It’s on Sasha and he hits 2 FTs to put LA up 83-79. Boston timeout.

*Rondo misses a 3 and the Lakers win 83-79. What a series. I think both squads should trade out jerseys world cup style. Bravo.

*That’s a wrap from Staples. Lakers get their 16th title. Heading to the pressers. Hoping to grab some champagne. Good night and good luck.

i’ve seen already the Artest interview’s at least 3 times each, the guy is a true comedian, i bet it’s intentional comedy, the guy is a pro entartainer. He becomes officially one of my top-10 favorite bball players in the world !!
Did i mentioned how terrible was my favorite one tonight..???

  • larrylegend

forget the nab finals, casey jacobsen, german bbal league champ 2010!!! FREAK CITY!!!

  • BostonBaller

I’ll be back to read the TWO HUNDRED comments above but I had to get on to say Congrats to The LA Lakers for getting it done..Congrats to my Green team for a hard fought battle. No one on here should be complaining about anything, no one should be too down or overly bitter today about our loss and no one should be obnoxious or overly cocky about the win either. This was truly one of those games where you say it could have gone either way if you’re on the losing end and the better team won if you are on the winning side. Gasol was my pick for Finals MVP but we knew Kobe was gonna get it in a LA win. I’ll be back to have fun latter. Thanks again SLAM.

  • BostonBaller

TWO HUNDRED plus comments already! WOW! I have to run but I’ll read every single word later. CONGRATS to The LA LAKERS…hard fought battle and no head hanging or excuses from this end. Both teams battled and the result was a classic.

  • rikson

LA was able to get back into the game once kobe stopped shooting those ridiculously bad shots! Whoooo, those were some terrible shots!!! Combine that with the no-trust kobe had for his team and you get a Cs lead. Once Pau made some shots kobe understood that he is NOT the man tonight and the game switched… BTW Pau was the Game 7 MVP -> his rebounds kept LA in the game despite their poor shooting the first half!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nima Zarrabi

Big up to all that rolled with us tonight. Some great posts in the comment section. Plenty of laughs and insight. Funniest thing I saw all night was Rasheed leaving the Staples Center tunnel in full uniform (sweatshirt over jersey but shorts still visible and same sneaks still on). He had shades on but looked very hurt. Celtics say he could have played his last game. I hope he decides to play next year. He put in a heck of an effort tonight.

  • cp3fan

The Kobe hate is going to be crazy today lol. And he loves it. I love the quote about Shaq. How does that taste Mr. O’Neal? haha. No more of this “he wouldn’t have won without Shaq” mess because newsflash…Shaq wouldn’t have won without him either.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

one other thing I have to say about this series. i know when people think of my boy Ray Allen in this series, they’re going to think of his shooting struggles, but let’s not forget that he played stellar defense on Kobe. i know it may go unnoticed because Ray’s not known as a defensive stopper and people are going to figure that it’s mostly team D that’s slowing Kobe down. that’s all true, Ray did a great job of keeping Kobe in front of him, and he’s a big reason Kobe shot around 40% this series, so don’t be so quick to say that he played a poor series.

  • JP

Kobe 5 time NBA Champs and still a lot of haters around here, don’t you think he deserves a little more respect now ???

  • jumpman3224

Congrats to all of LakerNation. I don’t know about you, but this win was so rewarding for me as a lifelong fan for a couple of reasons: 1)Redemption against Boston for 08, which ripped my heart out (not literally, but damn near) and 2)All of the hate, doubt and naysaying that I listened to and read all year. We heard so many reasons why the Lakers couldn’t win (Lost to Cavs in regular season, Kobe hurt/old, Ron Artest, Not tough enough etc. etc.). This has played out like the ultimate 3 act play with LA/Kobe as the hero. I know Mamba had a bad shooting game, but sometime greatness is being able to overcome having something taken away. Superman occasionally has to save the world without the Yellow Sun. Kobe had a nightmare shooting night, but was able to put his finger prints all over the game by being a dominant perimeter rebounder and D’ing up. His D against Rondo and Allen this series was amazing and validated his All-D season. Also, thank you for putting in the work to get tougher/better Pau Gasol. Looks like after everything the Artest signing was the right move after all. He outplayed Pierce in Game 7 with the series on the line. That was a great team win, which makes it so much sweeter. Go Lakers!

  • jumpman3224

@Jackie Moon: good stat! that is an elite group. i think at this point Kobe has surpassed Shaq in terms of career and overall ranking. I would love to see where Slam would put him all time now (he was #12 before winning back to back titles and finals MVPs).

  • jumpman3224

@BostonBaller: Way to be classy, even in defeat. That’s a true sign of a fan and a class act guy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    great series.

  • Bruno

    hi eboy!!!
or should I just call him nostradamus cause he was on fire with his playoffs predictions like the 3 time finals loser cause he was right … right?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

hats off to artest for being in control for the whole year. same with davis for continually amazing us every year. Sheed had a great game 7, but even that one game can’t change all the dumb things he’s done like shoot 3′s 13 times out of 10, sasha and farmar are still douches and numbskulls. Respect for bynum, fighting through injuries. I think ray allen is gone with celts, and lastly better team wins.

  • jumpman3224

@Bruno: he also said that the Lakers couldn’t take a punch and the mouth (after game 5) and come back. Maybe now we can get a season without haters doubting the Lakers at every step, probably not though.

  • Bruno

and one thing no one can argue is ron artest wanted his ring badly!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Though short of a title, can we all agree now that boston is the surprise team of the season.?

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@all….:if Eboy and his “bball insight” somehow disapears are you gonna feel better..?? You’ve never been 16 years old or you were born with bball understanding…??? Please ,give the kid a break…

  • Bruno

hey if the team you root for wins you can say whatever you want man that’s a law in sports hahaha

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

and before i forget, thanks and CONGRATS TO SLAM for another year of GREAT bball season,. another season of great posts, articles, kicks, vids, DEBATES!, ARGUMENTS!, and anything basketball!!! not that were also closing out but you know just appreciating… so when are we gonna start the TOP 50..?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Sad for the Celtics, happy for Artest.
Wish Doc would have kept going to Sheed and KG on the block instead of isolating Pierce against Artest.
Oh well, the Lakers did what they had to do.

  • jumpman3224

@Pap: he constantly criticizes commenters who don’t share his views for being too young to know anything about the game…if he is really 16 I would be shocked. That would mean when Eboy got drafted Slam’s Eboy was 4 years old.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Wow. That was some epic basketball…and I thought this was supposed to be a boring playoffs? Nicely done Lakers…won as a team…nicely done Celtics, you were right there.

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

Good Call BostonBaller-I thought it was gonna be MVPG for Pau Gasol as well. Next Year. Incredibly hard fought, intense game.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Ron Artest was the MVQueensbridge. I seriously thought he was going to shoot the Lakers out of the game…congrats to his shrink…I am sure this bodes well for their business.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@jumpman3224…: don’t be surprised, it is a typical “defence mechanism” (as uncle sigmund would have said),in psychology is called “projection”…

  • BostonBaller

If MY Celtics had won (I really wanted it) I wouldn’t be able to say the best team won b/c how do you say either team was clearly better during this series? WOW, they both laid it on the line and the team that hit the shots won it..both defenses were intense and when you have Kobe you always have a slight edge. In 08′ I said Gasol wasn’t soft just finest, he isn’t a tough player now just better. Big ups to him & Mr. QueensBridge’s doctor. lol Ron is Ron & he’s still at the club pushing his single. hahaha. KG was wiped out from playing so many minutes and Sheed cramped b/c his old body isn’t used to the minutes but I’m proud of them and even though PDouble & Ray didn’t shoot well overall, their D on kobe was pretty good all series. ( co-sign letsmotor Posted: Jun.18 at 9:19 am
I truly believe DFish & Ray both had so so series b/c both were thinking about their kids..two of the classiest guys in the L almost came to blows and it wasn’t just b/c they were playing hard…Stories within the stories…
@jumpman3224 Thank you, i appreciate the compliment and thanks for being a classy winner..that’s often times harder. lol.

  • jumpman3224

    @Papaloukas: Good point!

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

After watching the game and looking at the boxscore, I would say the biggest factor in Lakers win was offensive rebounding. They had a 23-8 edge…it helped them survive 32.5% shooting from the field and 20% from 3range (they also only made 67% of free throws). The C’s had better % but they took 10 less shots and 20 less free throws. Not having Perk hurt the C’s alot…still, it was a tough as nails game…they called it pretty loose in the first half, tight in the 3rd and it kinda went all over the place down the stretch…awesome game.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Papa
You do the exact same thing as Eboy.
So, what conclusions should we draw?

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@Allenp…:whatever you abilities allows you to draw,i got no problem at all !!!(i can’t help you on this…)

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@allenp….:i wanted to add for fun “i do the same all the time!!!” in the end of the 11:23 comment but i didn’t want to confuse jumpman (i don’t know him like i know the rest of you)…anyway, same result. i just hoped Eboy would give tihs response instead of you, he is much “brightest/cultivated” than you and his responses are always comic !!! He and the ‘jukai/tavoris’ poster are my favorites !!!

  • The Philosopher

If Rondo played like he did in Game 2 (even though he showed glimpses)…

  • truthteller

Everybody keeps saying that Kobe had a bad game. he had 22 points and 15 rebounds!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

l.a. was the better team at this series. not clearly or in dominant fashion, maybe by a hair.. as we all say we could do this again and have a different result, but cmon this is why we do this, right? who wins within this 7 games, 4-0, 4-3 or so, will determine the champ, the better team in THAT 7 game series! whether 1 game elimination or best of 7, bottomeline the better, or sometimes luckier, (but no champs were lucky..) in that particular time frame, wins. Either way if boston won, that means they’re the better,

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@the philosopher….:If Rondo…..THEN kobe would not have played like this (and this means most propably better cause it’s difficult to play much worse). That’s how “IF” construcitons usually go….

  • BostonBaller

@J ” Yes you can say we were the surprise of the L to everyone except a few of us dillusional fans here in Beantown. lol. I also co-sign your sentiments to SLAM et al..but that top 50 thing can wait, we need to recover. M Wilburn made a very valid point last night on how we tend to only view “today” and the players we currently watch and discount the ultra greats of yesteryear…something to think about. He has Kobe in the top 20 and not 10. But that another debate for another day..I love some Kobe but not when he helps beat us. @AndTheJellosJigglin Posted:Jun 18 at 11:12 am : We understand why Kobe got the MVP and no ones made at that but I’d love to see more guys get it that also deserve it (Maxwell over Bird was deserved but a shock) LA are kings again this year so I hope the stay intact and I hope we do the same and go at it again..we can’t let LA creep closer to our 17. lol.

  • The Philosopher

@The Leader (PAPALOUKAS) Understood, but you know…

  • The Philosopher

I’m happy for The Lakers, but at the same time I feel a little pity for The Celtics. They showed tremendous heart AND guile. They also really looked they’re age last night.

  • BostonBaller

@jumpman3224 Posted: Jun.18 at 10:14 am : You will get a season w/out ppl doubting the lakers but not never a season where ppl don’t hate them much like we have here in Boston, there is always going to be mass hate b/c you guys win. I get it all the time and from new fans of the game to boot. lol. That’s what makes it so much fun to be a Lakers, Celtics, cowboys or Yankees fan. time to go pack for a long vacation but I’ll take SLAM with me…I haven’t even open the pages to the last 3 SLAMs so I can read them on them when relaxing on the trip. Plus I can’t read about an opponent or my own team during a series..I’m weird like that.

@THe philosopher….: PAPALOUKAS was ‘the leader’ as you call him, until he came back to the team of his hurt (olympiakos). Sadly he is past his prime…i will move to another name (i’m thinking about “Fotsis” again, it’s been a long time…)

  • BostonBaller

@The Philosopher, you’ve been great and I see your point about the age. KG was completely winded and Sheed started catching cramps but part of it was that they had to play extended minutes w/out the rest they would have gotten with Perk in there. Going to a commercial they showed about 10 seconds of KG walking slowly to the bench breathing through his mouth and clearly spent. KG is 1 OG that is indeed a Warrior. Kobe says he was gassed too so if he was tired then you know there was some intense & draining play going on. GREAT GAME & GREAT SEASON…I’m really gone this time…the boss is probably on the sight checking on me. lol

@Bostonballer Don’t ever let anyone tell you that Home Court advantage doesn’t matter … I don’t even want to think about what would’ve happened if Boston had HCA. @pap eboy’s got to be able to take it if he’s going to dish it. He also rubs the wrong way with the manner in which he makes his predictions. Like I said, I almost never make predictions, because, well, you never know.

  • The Philosopher

BostonBaller: Thanks a lot, for I really appreciate that. You have been great as well with your class AND dignity, and your keen knowledge of the game. The next time I’m in Boston, I will look you up. Don’t work too hard, and good day, brethren.

  • Dru Ha

    Remarkable game.

    Remarkable free throw discrepancy.

Stern had to get Kobe another ring. It was important for the league.

Had the calls been even the Celtics would have won the game going away.

    NDA= national donnaghy association.

    FAIL.

@PAPALOUKAS, The Leader: The reason I still call you The Leader is because you exude leadership qualities, from what I’ve seen, on AND off of the court. You are learned, worldly, and insightful. You are considered by many a national hero, such as a Nick Galis. You are of a rare breed.
