NBA Top 25-Under 25

Ranking the L’s youngest players who go hard.

by Aaron Fischman / @AaronHartf

Welcome to the Top 25-Under 25! I could not be more thrilled for the opportunity to bring the Top 25-Under 25 to SLAMonline. Patrick Crawley and I created the concept in October of 2007 and, with the help of my brother, Joshua Fischman, the concept developed in to a tangible list by December of the same year. The list aims to rank the 25 best NBA players who are under the age of 25. The goal seems simple enough, but before I present the new list, you must be aware of my criteria for determining “the best.”

Because it is very subjective to rank the 25 best players under the age of 25 (or really to rank the 25 best of anything), we decided that we (the three of us) would each make individual rankings (1-35) and then average those to come up with our top 25. The five players who finished 26-30, are be classified as “On the cusp” below the list. Here’s how that first edition turned out.

Since the first edition, some things have changed. First of all, LeBron James placed first in every single edition, while he was still eligible. Once he turned 25 on December 30 this past season, the first position became vacant, which sets the stage for a new young baller to be crowned King of this list. Secondly, I will be the only voter on this edition, so I will have to make do without the help of my trusty sidekicks. Last but definitely not least (and probably most important), I have decided to tweak the criteria for making this version of the list.

Potential has become very minimal in considering a player’s position and even presence on this list. I say ‘minimal’ rather than ‘non-existent,’ because for players who have very similar professional credentials, I will err on the side of advancing the younger player. While potential is not explicitly ranked on this list, it will be invoked, indirectly, in that I care a lot about a player’s progression. For example, Russell Westbrook and Andrea Bargnani have shown huge improvements over the years, whereas the progression of Marvin Williams and JR Smith has essentially stalled. Daequan Cook and Thaddeus Young, for instance, have regressed and consequently, do not even place on this list. In other words, this list is more interested in assessing the “what have you done for me lately” factor (but not too recently…more like over a period of multiple months or years) rather than projecting where players will be in the future. Projecting potential is always fun, but avoiding potential makes this list slightly less subjective even though it is still, admittedly, very subjective.

I also should point out that winning is heavily weighted in determining if and where players appear on this list. More specifically, this is a valuable combination for a player in terms of placing high on this list: playing for a winning team and the player in question making a positive impact for that team. Playoff performance can also help or hurt a player’s stock. There will obviously be some exceptions. For instance, Monta Ellis and Tyreke Evans are the only two players in the top 10 who play for non-Playoff teams. Winning is non-essential. It just helps. Ellis and Evans are too talented to be pushed out of the top 10 simply because they played for sub-par teams. Brook Lopez is another good example. Although he plays for lowly Nets, his contributions were too impressive to discount. Fair or not, it does hurt a player’s stock if he is a member of a poor team. It can also hurt a player if he is on too good of a team. For instance, I suspect Jordan Farmar and Glen Davis would have logged far more minutes (and played decently well) if either were on a less talented roster. Unfortunately for those guys, they didn’t play enough to prove their spot on this list.

It’s tough for rookies to place on the list, but if a guy has consistently done big things during his rookie season, then he can and will appear. On this edition, three rookies cracked the top 25 and one even placed in the top 6. Two additional rookies finished “on the cusp” in the 26-30 positions. It’s so tough for rookies to make this list, because consistency is not typically a word used to describe rookies. Rookies who score 55 points in a single game, but can’t find their shooting stroke for weeks at a time, don’t exactly scream out ‘consistency.’ Someone like Brandon Jennings is very high on potential and will very likely finish a lot higher on this list in the future, but for now, he is clearly not ready to move up. The same goes for rookies and non-rookies who haven’t played enough like Bill Walker, Rodrigue Beaubois, Glen Davis, Goran Dragic, Greg Oden (injuries), DeJuan Blair, Reggie Williams and others.

Only players who are under 25 years old (24 or younger) as of July 1, 2010, are eligible to make this edition.

I honestly wish this was The Top 50-Under 25 because there were so many deserving guys who had to be left off. Still, the Top 50-Under 25 doesn’t have that ring to it, plus limiting the amount of honorees makes the list mean a whole lot more. So in the interest of giving you a more meaningful, and at the same time, digestible list, without further ado, here it is:

Yea, cj miles and blatche should have def been on here, esp blatche

  • bashmo

wtfffff Al Jefferson ahead of Deron WIlliams and kevin durant, and brandon roy?? OMG CHRIS BOSH BEHIND AL JEFFERSON TOO??? List is void right of the bat

  • Patrick

It’s a crime that Monta is so high and Lopez, Gordon and Jennings are so low. I like Al Horford a lot, but what has he done that Lopez hasn’t done? Other than make the playoffs, of course. The top 4 is solid though. I agree with Durant over Howard.

  • d

OJ Mayo should be in the top 10. And come next season may argubly be the best player on this list.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

As much as I love Beasley there no way he is that high on the list. Danilo is more deserving of a spot than Beasley given his drive and will. Anybody who saw him throw down the gauntlet to Melo this season knows what I’m talking about.

  • Myung

As a Hawks fan, I can think of 25 players NOT on this list who are better than Marvin Williams (including probably 10 guys who will be drafted tomorrow night).

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Curry and Jennings should be higher, Monta should be lower, he just tries to scores. OJ Mayo is higher. But Jennings being 25 overall shows someone did not watch games. Jennings can do everything Rose can do on the court, but shoot better. Rose is better than Rondo. Lets see how Rondo produces with out the suppose BIG 3. Beside the top 6 playes, any of those teams would trade their player for Jennings. This list lost all credibility with Jennings 25. Evans and Rondo is becoming too overrated for my taste. Rondo disappears, because he can’t shoot like Lebron and Evans one man show hurt the Kings chemistry. Beasley is a disappointment, no one will trade for him. OJ Mayo to me is very underrated, remember he plays with a big time ball hog in Gay. OJ’s game remind me of Kobe and Howard is number one, because he can effect the game on offense and defense. He is not the reason the Magic loss, its his teammates especially Vince Carter and Matt “Housepunk” Barnes.

  • Morgan

Decent list but everyone is going to feel its a few places out based on who they have watched play most. My problem is that although you have said you factored in what they have accomplished you have forgot to add the “i have a championship ring” factor. Bynum, although missing games has played longer seasons than most on this list (as they have reached the finals the past 3 years) and has 2 rings as a starter.

  • Playa

Brandon Jennings is too low. Steph Curry should be in the top 10. Marvin Williams shouldn’t be on the list. Durant over Howard? I don’t think so.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

@seed, you know this may be one of the littlest things i agree with you, i do see a kobe bryant in OJ Mayo too. In all honesty i like how mayo plays and very reminiscing to me of bryant and a little of a young ray allen. Very good form of shooting and overall range. in at least two years i think, he could be the best player that franchise has ever had. Well hopefully..

  • Kap

Howard has too many holes in his game to be over Durant…The dude dropped 25 for like 30-40 sumthn games I thnk. Durant is effective on both ends of the court while Howard has little offensive awareness and is only a descent scorer bc of his athleticism.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

I stop reading after I saw how low Brandon Jennings was.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i could agree with most on the list except from josh smith being that high, or at least better than rose, and jennings being on the worst position he could be, jennings is at least top 20. bad percentage yes, but it seems you’ve forgotten the most important thing jennings have done, almost SINGLE-HANDEDLY beat the hawks last playoffs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

lol at spaceship jay, you’ve basically read the whole article..

  • Myung

And again, as a Hawks fan, I find it laughable that Josh Smith is considered your 4th best Under 25 player. I’ve seen almost every game of this kid’s career so far… and I there are (at least) 10 guys on your list (and probably 10 not on your list) below him that I’d take in a 1 for 1 trade in a heart beat. He’s physically gifted and puts up numbers, but in terms of his attitude and basketball IQ, he leaves a lot to be desired. Give me Derrick Rose, Tyreke, Monta, Aldridge, Westbrook, Curry, Love, Lopez, Mayo, or Jennings over Josh any day.

  • Kap

    @ Myung…No Bynum?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i like jeff green he could be a better version of antawn jamison, hopefully he could also improve dramatically on defense. On that note OKC should be shopping for a big man with their money this summer. A good defensive center is what they need. I think they could bring in haywood or camby or both without salvaging their cap space,

  • catface34343

    Thad Young?

  • Kap

I’ve been talking to several people and they think that Bynum basically sucks and has no talent. IMO, I think he is a perennial all star

  • Myung

Kap, I’d rather have Josh Smith’s bad attitude and shot selection than Bynum’s bad knees (and every other part of his body that can’t remain healthy).

  • Sean

    That list is bs!
What is Mike Beasley doing there!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

beasley is a victim of the miami system where you should be a great spot up shooter or great in the post if you’re not named wade. beasley is not both, he is a slasher mid range type which is almost same as wade, he should be on a team that can utilize him properly. i think he’s good as gone this summer,

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    J
OJ May will be a beast in two years and he plays like Kobe, its like he mimic how Kobe plays, like how Kobe mimic how Jordan plays. Thats why I thought the Heat should have drafted OJ over Beasley, OJ has HUGE upside, but he plays in Memphis and hardly gets TV time. Thats why Memphis heads came out and said they would not trade OJ for Chris Paul. OJ will be a beast and should be higher on this list. BOOK IT!!!

  • Maurice Bobb

B Jennings needs to be WAY higher on this list. And OJ Mayo and Eric Gordon should def be higher up.

  • http://Slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

SMH @ Rico’s comments…you really shouldn’t hate on somebody that represents Englewood, especially if you say that you’re from there and live there. And to say Rose represents “black stereotypes” is just wrong. It shows you have zero understanding of this kid and the type of person he is. You can’t possibly be from Chicago talking reckless like that.

Off topic: recently i watched my favorite wnba team, the seattle storm, and then i realized that the sonics need to be resurrected, @seed, even if there were no beasley in that draft they wouldnt pick mayo, he’s a sg. he’s no pg, he can’t live with wade. And, i’m amazed with jennings, that guy proved to be mature and humble instead of being that much arrogant that i think he will be coming here, mad props.

  • hoodsnake

A great read and Beasly is a bit too high. Matter of fact B-Easy is high all the time!

  • dsleepy

agree with J, bring back the sonics! also jennings should be higher and m.williams nowhere NEAR this list. i still cant believe he got picked before cp3 and dwill in the draft. sick…

  • dino

Jennings at 25 WTF!!! Beasley has potential but he is way too high on this list. OJ is gonna be good someday but right now he is somewhere between overhyped & underated. Also anyone who thinks Monta is better than Steph needs thier head checked. And Big Brook should be top 10 he is and will be better than Horford, Bynum and Aldridge

  • Kap

I disagree with Lopez being better than Bynum. Bynum put up close to same numbers on a championship team and Bynum has so much size that really shows up on both ends of court. Lopez is great but I like Bynum’s impact better.

  • http://davissportsdeli.com Aaron Fischman

I love the debate that this list has inspired, but I think a lot of the discussion is tangential to what the criteria is actually about. A lot of people keep commenting that they would take so and so (usually Jennings) over someone else who was ranked higher on the list any day…or that they would much rather build a team with Jennings than such and such. So would I! I completely agree! The problem is that that’s not what this list measures. The “who would I build my team around factor” has POTENTIAL written all over it. This list is biased against rookies. Jennings is going to be great, but he’s nowhere near a reliable player at this point in time. This list is updated occasionally so that once guys like Jennings become consistent, they can move up. In response to the Big Brook concern, fair or not, I can’t have a guy in the top 10 who played for one of the worst teams in NBA history. Gordon and Mayo were also hurt by playing on poor teams even though I personally love each of their games.

lists always are a good topic, it really helps getting people to post on SLAMonline. For that alone, good job with the list Aaron (even though I don’t agree with a lot of those picks, lists are always fun)

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Aaron fischman: i only disagree with two things one of which is jennings. He is definitely qualified to be higher based on your criteria. He’s inconsistent, yes, and so as some of the guys placed higher than him. They almost beat the hawks with him leading the team. That’s very remarkable. Some can say Evans can do the same, but thats just speculation. Lets deal with whats on the table and it proves that jennings is no way only listed at 25 at this point in time. Had marvin williams did equal for all of his career what brandon did this year? No.

  • http://davissportsdeli.com Aaron Fischman

Thank you. I understand and respect that. I acknowledged above that in retrospect, Jennings should have been placed slightly higher (possibly around 21) with Marv and JR slightly lower.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

and i definitely agree with the rest on the list. great work overall.

  • Ross

Awesome list dude! I like Jennings’ upside and Beasley is a physical presence whenever he is on his game. Much of it is open to debate and will be changed in the coming months after John Wall and the Draft tonight!
I’m sure AHFisch is on top of it, as always.
Mazel tov Aaron, another step in the road to sports journalism greatness.

  • http://davissportsdeli.com Aaron Fischman

    Thanks again!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I guess people have already forgotten about what Kevin Durant did last year. #11!?!? Get the fu(k outta here.

  • rainman10

ok some people are clearly reading the list from a few yrs ago.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’d rather have Russell Westbrook than Andrew Bynum.

  • Daniel

SERGE IBAKA!!! He jumps out of the gym, can block shots, rebound and actually has a good jump shot too.

Who’d you rather have for the next five years? Some of the other fools on this list, or Serge Ibaka?

  • Ronald

@rainman10: It also doesn’t help that the average slamonline reader doesn’t have a very long attention span. If they bothered reading the article to the 2nd page they would have realized their stupidity. Hard to disagree with some of the choices up there, especially when I don’t have a list of all the under-25 players in the league. But Tyreke Evans seems kinda high considering he hasn’t won them many games.

  • A.

Some people (hey Brad Long!) must feel preeeeetty stupid right about now. Reading is fundamental.

  • jond

I don’t think Tyreke is too high if we’re talking about pure talent. Tyreke shot about 46% from the field, and 75% from the line. The idea that he’s a one man show and a volume shooter is competely false. He was able to do that, and get almost 6 assists per game with defenses geared towards stopping him. Most of teh guys on this list don’t have defenses completely greared towards stopping them and face constant doubles like Tyreke. Replace Tyreke with Rose or Rondo in the Kings lineup and the win total doesn’t change. Might actually drop given the game winnners Tyreke hit vs Mil and Den.

  • Will Lee

bynum at 10 ? fuk that

  • JoeMaMa

I really don’t know why more people don’t see how good of a player Eric Gordon is. He even got Kobe’s endorsement and offer to train with him. He’s a gamer.
Also, a few guys have already said this, but OJ Mayo can PLAY! He will be one of the best in the league in a few years, no doubt. Shoulda been higher. Mr. Writer, thanks for your list; it’s inspired us in the peanut gallery to discuss much.

  • Aaron

    Darren Collison = Overlooked.
He’s going to be a top ten PG in the next couple years.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

You guys forget just how bad Jennings slumped during the regular season. He balled out hard during the playoffs, and credit to him for that. But, that doesn’t make up for 45-50 games of sup 40% shooting, sup 5 assist games.
