Nets Hire Avery Johnson as Head Coach

Seems like it’s been a long time since Avery was the 2005 COY, but the Nets hope the former Mavs coach can re-capture some of the mid-decade magic. Per ESPN.com: “The New Jersey Nets and ESPN analyst Avery Johnson have reached a verbal agreement to hire Johnson as the Nets’ new coach, according to sources close to the process. Johnson, who has been working for ESPN since his dismissal from the Dallas Mavericks after the 2007-08 season, was the NBA’s Coach of the Year in 2005 and took the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2006. He posted a record of 194-70 in three-plus seasons, good for a winning percentage of .735, and will be reunited in New Jersey with point guard Devin Harris.”

Oh the conversations avery and mike will have. They will need 3 interpreters

    ^ That!

Avery and Devin Harris were not exactly buddy buddy in Dallas so it will be interesting to see part deux.

Honestly? I don’t believe ANY decision they make this summer could make them worse than last year. Basically they can only go up from here.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Gonna be a long year for Avery…

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Basskitbawl. Ha.. Depending on who they add, they could make the playoffs, it is the east after all. Even if they only get say, rudy and boozer, thats still a very nice team

haha tarzan, I laugh, but you actually might be right. BossTerry: no disrespect, but have you been following what’s going on lately? That comment would be right if you would’ve posted it in ’08 or ’09, but doesn’t make sense at all right now.

Johnson will have Lopez, Harris, Williams (who I predict will make a leap in his second year) and probably either Favors or Cousins. But not LeBron. Least I hope not.

Congrats to Avery Johnson, a standup guy who gets it. Hopefully the Nets will be smart enough to take Cousins or Favors or Monroe. Monroe is the sleeper of the trio, and I think he has the best all around skills of the bigs in the draft. There are some good free agents on the market this summer, and the Nets have the money to land at least two big names players, and the owner seems committed to excellence. In 2 years the Nets will be back in the playoffs.

On another note, I hope to Mark Jackson is chosen to coach the Atlanta Hawks, I think he’ll make a great coach. Must be a point guard thing…

  • http://www.addictedtobeauty.ca Kevin

seems like an odd choice, but great on the Nets for landing Johnson.. he’ll do a good job. I’m just curious as to why Johnson didn’t take a “better” gig elsewhere

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

^Money, playa. The owner of the Nets is the 6th richest man on the planet. I’m sure he promised Coach Johnson “the world and everything in it”….

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

In my quasi expert opinion, I think mark jackson would be a terrible coach. If his huddles and overall coaching are anything like the crap he spews on tv, he wont last a season. He throws out cliche after cliche and is never technically insightful, like jeff and hubie are. Mark should at least be an assistant for a few years. Whats this sense of entitlement about? Earn the job.

  • The Philosopher

It does look like a point guard thing, Tarzan. Even Kareem said it.

  • T-Money

Now I get why he was so adamant that NJ were leading the LeBron chase.

  • The Philosopher

@T-Money: You think LeBron would play for Avery?

  • slamfan4life

    smart move

  • angelito jr

say goodbye to ur .76 win pctg

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Great move by the Nets. But why the hell didn’t the Raptors try for him when they let Sam Mitchell go?

  • Simmy Sosa

I didn’t think Avery wanted to rebuild. I know he has passed on a number of opportunities. This could mean two things. 1) The money was too good to pass up or 2) He’s getting a 6′ 9″ 260 lb MVP. But why would Karl Malone come back to play for the Nets? (snare drum crash)

  • http://Yahoo ShanShan

I think Lebron would play for Avery. He’s been to the finals. Played on a championship squad. Lebron should be open ears to someone like that. Plus the New Jersey situation sets up perfectly. They don’t even need another free agent. “Only Lebron”

Something I cant seem to understand. “He posted a record of 194-70 in three-plus seasons, good for a winning percentage of .735″, and still wasnt good enough? Is it that bad? Same as the discussion concerning Mike Brown I guess. No title; no more job.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

nice pick NJ.. Oh or brooklyn..

  • Goat

@Gerwin, it wasn’t just “no title” that got Avery fired from Dallas. The whole collapse in the Finals (after being up 2-0) was the start, but the next season he couldn’t get out of the first round (with a #1 seeded team!).

@Tarzan – I agree. If I have to listen to Mark Jackson exclaim “that was great defence by _____, but even better offense by ______!” once more during these Finals, I might just puke.

  • Jumper

I want Avery Johnson to be the voice on my car’s navigation device

I just want to make clear that the Nets job isn’t exactly a bad job to have. As a Nets fan I can say that these are exciting times. And no, I won’t be disappointed at all if we don’t get LeBron. Actually, I have a couple of other names in my head that would make a better fit, there are some very good young pieces on this team, etc. etc. Don’t let the record of the past season fool you guys. I think it was Lang who once said that the worst thing that can happen to a team is when you are just going nowhere. When it seems like there is no plan. Well, there is a plan, and with Johnson we’ve taken a first step. Then the Draft (hoping for Favors, or, if possible, Turner), then free agency. Ryan Shaw is singing in my head: “It Gets Better”

  • dsleepy

^ haha true, jumper. that would be awesome

  • Kap

sign Johnson & Boozer or Gay & Boozer and you set up for the present and future and Favors can just chill til he is ready to dominate.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Kap gets it. Although I would rather have David Lee instead of Boozer. Rudy Gay and David Lee, and we’re ready to get some wins again.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I agree on Mark Jackson, but I guess he figures that if it could happen for Vinny del Negro and Steve Kerr, why not me?

  • Jahi

Strange enough, too many people believe think NBA coaching is equivalent to the coaching on the college level. Can you really coach the type of players and personalities that exist at the NBA level? Coaching at the NBA level is for the most part about management, and there is no requirement that you need to waddle in the assistant coaching ranks for perpituity if you have superior management skills, especially with the point guard background.

Bad move if you ask me> First off, from what previous players have said Avery isn’t exactly a players coach. His system isn’t as free flowing as it should. Prokhorov and thorn should have waited till after the season and try to snag Phil if possible. Money’s no object anyway. I think this russian will do great things for the league. Much better version than cuban and i think he will have a few titles in the not so distant future.

Prokhorov said “Get me dis Little General person for coach”

    Should be an interesting season.

  • ClydeSays

Oh man. Devin Harris must be thrilled. I remember him making some post Avery comments….
