Pierce May Opt-Out of Contract This Summer

Clearly, there are plenty of factors that will affect P-Double’s decision. But financially, opting-out makes perfect sense for Pierce — the tenuous window of making max or near-max millions for several more years is still there: “There could be another member of the Big Three on the market, too. Pierce has a player option for $21.5 million next season. But with the collective bargaining agreement set to expire next summer and a new one expected to significantly reduce player salaries, several prominent players (including Dirk Nowitzki and Amar’e Stoudemire) are planning to opt out of lucrative contracts in order to sign new deals under the existing agreement. Pierce, 32, could leave the $21.5 million on the table with the expectation that he could score a contract worth $50 million to $60 million in the offseason.”

    Nooooooo!!!! Stay with the Celtics

yea, if he opts out it will be to sign a smaller contract (although for more years) just to save the celtics salary cap so they can sign better players for next year and make one more legit run at the championship. i really dont see pierce leaving the celtics

If he opts out it could potentially make room to sign Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay. They might need a new solid big man to fill the Center/PF role as KG is slowing and Perkins will be out and Wallace is rumored to retire. There’s also the Celtics bench which are mostly free agents now excluding Big Baby.

The Celtics have the potential to regroup after an impressive run and a historic franchise might entice new free agents to become part of.

i’d be shocked if he left.

@ Eduardo…Im pretty sure Perkins will heal from an ankle sprain within 4 months, He wont be out

  • Trevor

He’ll never leave the Celtics. Its just to save cap space.

I really respect Paul Pierce. He was thier 10 years before he finally won a champonship. he really stuck it out despite the stabbing incident. LeBron on the other hand is worshipped by Cleveland and wants to leave after 7 years.

Perk has two partially torn ligaments that require surgery homeboy. There is a good chance he will miss a chunk of next year.

Yeah, Perk will be out for about 8 more months or so….that’s like January.

The Truth will not leave Boston. He’s been there his whole career. The only reason he would opt out is to have a smaller contract so BOS has money to get a big man or another free agent

Paul has said more than once he wants to retire as a Celtic. If he leaves for more money I’d be very disappointed.

  • Jose

Co-sign W/ L. He’d be the last person to leave Beantown. He’s lookin to open up some cap for a FA by Opting out.

Pierce knows that being associated with a team like the Boston Celtics for an entire career is more special than just being known as another good NBA player. If he sticks in Boston he will be known as a great Celtic and that means more.

I doubt joe johnson would go there

    amare stoudemire going to boston

I think that Paul Pierce will opt-out and sign with the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, or the San Antonio Spurs this summer. Ray Allen will likely end up in Utah, Orlando, Detroit, or Miami. I think Orlando would be the best place for Ray Allen.

I really want the Celtics to keep their core players. I truly believe they have one more chance to contend for a title, and I love the personalities on this team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

I think it may come down to whether Ray re-signs, but, I think Pierce has more left in the tank than Allen. He has lost more of a step then Pierce to me. Boston will better off to try and keep Pierce and then sign Joe Johnson, because he can create his won shots, instead of having to have screens to get open looks, as Allen does. I really hate to see the Big 3 break up, for they were really fun to watch, but it may be the end for them. They need another post presence to help Garnett also, and if Perkin’s injury is worse than some think, then its a priority for them to sign a polished center, even if it means losing Allen. They could always use their first round pick to get a shooting guard to replace Allen. But I think they have to address the post this offseason.
