Sources: Knicks Are Joe Johnson’s First Choice

Chris Broussard has the story: “When the clock strikes midnight ET in New York on July 1, Knicks team president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D’Antoni will be in Los Angeles meeting with Johnson, who will hold all of his meetings with clubs on the West Coast. The Knicks’ brass will fly to northeast Ohio to woo James at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday. While the Hawks hope to keep Johnson in Atlanta, several sources said the Knicks have emerged as his first choice. If they must lose him, the Hawks’ preference is to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks.But if no players on the Knicks’ roster appeal to Atlanta, Johnson, believing he will make up the difference through endorsements and through buying stock shares in Madison Square Garden, is willing to take less money to play with the Knicks, according to sources. Whatever the case, the Knicks could offer Johnson a maximum-salary contract worth approximately $96 million over five years, or a deal worth $125 million over six years through a sign-and-trade. Walsh and D’Antoni also hope to meet with Amare Stoudemire while in Los Angeles.”

    Stoudemire and Johnson back under D’Antoni’s tutelage, with Toney Douglas running the point and Wil Chandler at the 2-3 spot alongside Joe? F*ck yes! (if this happens!).

    ATL will be a loto team if this happens. Although i sort of figured once Woodson got fired they might be preparing to rebuild. If they were smart they would do it around Josh Smith.

    Joe Johnson does not deserve a max deal. lemme say that again. Joe Johnson does NOT deserve a max deal. aside from that, i like him as a player.. a Hedo Turkoglu kinda deal would be fair. I really hope the knicks don’t waste more of their money on Joe.

    Joe is probably better suited to be the 2nd or 3rd best guy on a team. If he’s the Knicks fall-back, max-player, the Knicks are in trouble.

    I’m a fan of the Hawks and this is good news to me, I always hated Joe Johnson. He’s the most overrated player in the NBA. Jamal Crawford > Joe Johnson I will be laughing when New York fans realize Joe Johnson is a piece of sh!t.

    Didnt NY Draft 2 SG/SF type players in the draft? How would that would w/ johnson? Amare and JJ do sound good w/ Wilson and Douglas but idk. JJ BETTER NOT get a max deal tho. 50-65 mil for them 5 yrs is wat i think he worth, but like those before me have said. Its NYK….

    Why do people (including the Knicks organization) treat David Lee as if he’s dispensable? He’s a way better rebounder than Stoudemire, and a way better defender than Boozer. He also has better health and character than Boozer. Combine David Lee with two max players (or one max player and Joe Johnson) and you have a team. But if Lebron and Bosh join Rose and Noah in Chicago, it’s over in the East.

    We Knicks fans greatly value Lee but he wants $12-14 MM a year and thats too high and if we sign two max players we just can’t afford Lee’s contract anyway. If we can’t get two max guys though Lee could very well come back. In NY though we keep hearing him connected to NJ.

    i like JJohnson, but hes not a max guy, you better bealive it..if they get Amare with him at 10mil or so and keep Lee thats a good 2010 summer, because i dont think Bron is going there unfortunetly.

    Not max guy. at times jamal crawford outperformed him. But Joe gives you 20, 5, 4.5-5 a season. Lol but we all know he is not the knicks first choice. He’s like the consolation prize to the consolation prize of the consolation prize.

    To give Joe anything more than a 3 year deal would be idiotic.Unless your Michael Jordan,Kobe Bryant,Shaq or Larry Bird you shouldn’t get more than a 3 year deal past age 30.

    i’d like to see the knicks get J.Johnson and re sign Lee and sign boozer.. To me, that sets u up incredibly… C- Boozer
    PF- Lee
    SF- Danillo
    SG- J.Johnson
    PG- T.Douglas Thats a rebounding nightmare for opposing teams, and theres 3pt galore, and JJ pass’s good for a 2guard, and Douglas has Potential, maybe a 14pt 4assist type player.. Danillo is getting better and better, and is on pace for a 17-18ppg 5.5rebound season…

    ^ But it’s not like the old days, buddy. It’s not like they have us, or Pat Riley, or Jeff Van Gundy. They need anyone they can get, and if Joe Johnson could get the Hawks to the playoffs, he can bring our old team there too. Of course, I’m helping out with Orlando, and they’ve been a really great organization, but my heart is in New York. It was great playing with you, John.

    nycsportzfan: Douglas has way more potential than just a fourteen points and four assists type player. He was scoring twenty pretty regularly when he was actually set to start–and as the point guard for the Knicks who can shoot, pass with great court vision, and actually DEFEND, Douglas’ potential is through the ceiling. All-Star even, maybe. That is, if everything pans out the way it’s supposed to.

    Woodson offense was undermining JJ production and value for the team. He is not a top level performer in isolation offense, therefore I think he can revive in D’Antoni offense where he can use his can set his feet and play some pick and roll. Even with that in mind the guy who is turning 29 tomorrow is no way worth 5-6 years max contract. 4 years 50 mil deal should be the Knicks target

    First NY should go hard at STATS, because they’re not getting Bosh.If Donnie & the boys were smart they would figure out a deal to get Hedo from T.O., instead of paying J.J. max money. Granted, Hedo is coming off a bad season, but I think that was due more to the system he was in & the personal he was playing with, than his skills being diminished. Hedo’s contract has 4 years- $40 mill left on it. You’ll be saving tons of money getting Hedo instead of J.J. at max price. They are basically the same player. An argument could cut both ways as to who is better, but I’ll say Hedo at his price. Dude is a matchup nightmare: 6’10, with pg handles. Great passer, strectches the Dee with the 3ball. Now that picture him in Mike’s system. The only con is that Hedo sucks on Dee, but Mike doesn’t errort the defensive end anyway. This coupled with T. Chandler for a good deal, and you’ll be losing Eddy Curry’s contract at the end of the season, NY could get a real MAX player summer or next. (Melo., T. Parker)

    maybe joe five years ago deserved a max contract. maybe. this is horrible if this is all the knicks fans get after the last decade. i mean, i often post pro-joe comments on here, but F*CK ME. this is it? and, based on the way, what are looking like, joe’s last days in ATL went, is he going to be OK in NY when the team he’s leading is looking like they’re going to miss the playoffs again? joe was a huge part of the hawks this year, but i wouldn’t say that he got them to the playoffs and i wouldn’t say it’s a certainty that he alone can take this knicks team to the playoffs. amare and joe, that’s a different story. i’m more than cool with that. joe as the only main addition to the current team? NY fans deserve so much after the past 10 years. @ unrel: as a knick fan, that ewing commercial was the best knick-related things that i’ve seen on TV during the last ten years.

    He must hate Atlanta because the Knicks are not a better team nor do they have a better future. Then again, he did the same thing when he was with Phoenix. I know one thing though, if he got ruffled when Atlanta’s fans booed him, he’ll be drinking bleach by the time New Yorkers are done with him.
