Blazers Sign Wes Matthews To Offer Sheet

NBA.com has the link: “The Utah Jazz will begin contemplating whether to match the five-year, $33 million offer sheet that the Portland Trail Blazers gave to restricted free agent guard Wesley Matthews on Monday, according to a league source. Utah had not yet officially received the sheet Saturday afternoon; teams have seven official days from the receipt of a sheet to decide whether or not to match it, meaning the Jazz’s clock will probably start on Monday. Utah expected someone to go after Matthews, but was stunned when Matthews, who averaged 9.4 points as a rookie last season, got such a rich offer.”

    hehehe… it’s a battle out there.

    And your going to tell me team owners REALLY think that the purse strings need to be tightened up in the coming CBA? wow. Evidence that GMs and team owners at large never really learn.

  • Clay Posted: Jul.11 at 10:01 am
    Dacre I’m with you. The owners need a new CBA in order to restrain themselves.

    Exactly. See it comes down to the fact too, that a young rookie, thats taken a starting spot and obviously has a measure of potential can draw some interest – but this offer sheet is completely over priced and really, the Utah Jazz have nothing left to do but match it. IF they want to keep him….and really, with Boozer gone, someone needs to look to score 20 a game. It’s a tough situation.

    I like this kid’s game. Glad I could get to see him play in the playoffs. Don’t know if he is worth all that much money…but if they want him that bad go for it. Its not my money and they need to replace Steve Blake.

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.11 at 10:27 am
    Well technically they don’t need to ‘replace’ Blake (the Blazers that is). He was gone mid way through the season when they got injuries and once Patrick Mills got healthy (but didn’t even use him). But look at all these guys…..?
    * J. Bayliss
    * P. Mills (FA)
    * B. Roy
    * E. Williams (signed draft pick)
    * A. Johnson (unsigned draft pick)
    * T. Diener (FA)
    * R. Fernandez
    I don’t see how they really could ‘need’ Wes.

    He’ll be getting paid more next year than blake griffin–the number one pick the year he came into the league. this is ridiculous.

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.11 at 11:10 am
    True. But he has started more games in the NBA thank Blake. He has higher totals and averages in every single category than Blake also…!! ^_^

    hmmmmm….

    he’ll love to start as a SG =)

    there must be a pre-arranged deal in place involving rudy fernandez if the jazz don’t end up matching this offer.

  • vanillagorrila Posted: Jul.11 at 1:36 pm
    Fernandez is getting traded so it makes sense a little bit i guess. Idk paul allen is essentially interim gm and we all know how great he is at that. At least he is loaded so w/e he wants to do with his money it should be good. We have the pillars locked down so might as well roll the dice on quite a few players till we find a core that works.

    The Jazz are getting pillaged this offseason. When is Williams’ contract up? Dude might have one foot out the door already.

    Wes Matthews played great ball for the Jazz in the playoffs, to not keep him would be a poor decision, especially after letting Boozer walk. Matthews was an undrafted guard who played solid, veteran-savvy defense; and we all know Jerry loves players who can defend.
    Blazers are making a great move by offering him the dough.

    i love the kids game, mainly his D but thats 10 mil too much…altough with a 25 mil offer the Jazz would obviosly match so…tough one this one…

  • BossTerry Posted: Jul.12 at 12:19 am
    The 11:51 post was not me…. (I should start saying a bunch of pointless, stupid stuff, and blame someone else using my name. hmmmmm..)

    good pick up, young man gave Kobe all he could handle on D…really strong and solid all around ball player

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.12 at 5:09 am
    I guess with 6 yrs under his belt and a proven track record of crunch time activity and staying healthy you’d be clammering for this kid….but yeah. Oh well. Lets call it an “investment offer” hey Paul??
