Bulls May Have Gotten It Right

Finally, Chicago plays a shrewd offseason.

by Quinn Peterson

I’m not writing this article as some die-hard Bulls fan who’s had his heart broken time after time since the end of the Jordan era. But rather, I’m writing this as merely a fan of the game. Having been in and around the City of Wind for the past couple decades, getting a chance to observe the Bulls pretty closely, it’s safe to say that when it comes to the roster, they have finally gotten it right.

It’s been a long time coming, too. Since His Airness departed, the Bulls may not have always had the worst record, but their rebuilding process has left much to be desired year after year — until this season.

See, since 1999, the Bulls have been that one team. The one that just always manages to botch something up — in a handful of ways: In some instances, they’ve been the team that simply makes senseless decisions; in others, they, for whatever reason, fall in love with guys who are mediocre at best; and yet, in different times, they’re that one squad that is rumored to be in the running for every big name player on the market, but always come up empty.

The first case began immediately following Jordan’s second retirement, as the Bulls hired Tim Floyd as head coach. A year later, with the No. 4 pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, the BulTyson Chandler, Jay Williams, Eddy Curry, Trenton Hassell & David Gravesls selected …. Marcus Fizer? Yeah. 2001 may have actually been the worst year, however, trading Elton Brand — co-ROY and an automatic 20 and 10 — for Brian Skinner and the draft rights to Tyson Chandler, drafting Eddy Curry, and signing the great Eddie Robinson. And this is only the beginning.

The following year, Ron Artest, Ron Mercer, Brad Miller — their top three scorers — were sent to the Pacers in exchange for Jalen Rose, Travis Best and Norm Richardson. In ’04, it was leading scorer Jamal Crawford on the move along with Jerome Williams. In return, the Knicks sent over Dikembe Mutumbo (who would never play a game for the Bulls, by the way), Othella Harrington, Frank Williams and some guy named Cezary Trybanski.

In 2006, first, LaMSLAM 103arcus Aldridge was traded for Tyrus Thomas. Then, despite being a team with very few offensive options, the Bulls went ahead and brought in an on-his-way-to-being-washed-up Ben Wallace. A week later, after snagging PJ Brown and JR Smith from New Orleans for Tyson Chandler, they shipped Smith to the Nuggets for Howard Eisley and two second-round draft picks — before Smith played a single game.

More recently, the Bulls are guilty of letting Ben Gordon walk for nothing. Not a bad move necessarily, as it left cap room for this offseason. But thinking John Salmons could step in as a number-one option on offense definitely is. Among other bad ideas have been signing Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng to massive, immovable contracts.

Granted, injuries to Jay Williams and Jamal Crawford were unfortunate — the two would have formed a pretty dope backcourt — but it’s fair to say that the Bulls haven’t always possessed the best decision-making.

In the second scenario, the Bulls, time and again, seem to become enamored with guys who just will not get the job done at the professional level. This is especially true of the time Scott Skiles was the head coach. In his five years, the Bulls made the Playoffs three times. Despite being sound defensive teams, the offensive deficiencies were glaring.

Each time, the post-season trips came after terrible starts to the regular season, giving nothing but false senses of hope, as the Bulls — and many of their fans — would enter the new season optimistic because of their late push the previous year. Each time, however, they failed to make any improvements during the offseason. It was during this time that guys like Andres Nocioni, Darius Songaila, Mike Sweetney and Othella Harrington emerged as “formidable” players. Role players maybe, but Andres Nocioni and Darius Songaila should never be two of your top five scorers. Never.

Lastly, in the third scenario, the Bulls have been the team rumored to be in the running for nearly every big name player, but never follow through on the deal. Back in ’03, the Bulls missed out on Tim Duncan, Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady when all three were free agents. Over the past few years, the Bulls have (according to rumors) missed out on McGrady (twice more), Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. Quite the list, and all would have certainly addressed major needs for the Bulls.

In the case of the latter three, the Bulls’ inability to part ways with Luol Deng, Ben Gordon or Tyrus Thomas have all been what has held the trades back.

The Bulls and their front office had come up short time and time again, which left the potential for this offseason to end the same way. But for a change, they didn’t, and it’s been nice to see because they’ve had one hell of an offseason and put together a damn good team.

Starting with moving Kirk Hinrich for cap room and bringing in well-respected defensive guru Tom Thibodeau, the Bulls have themselves in the best shape since Phil, Michael and Scottie ran the Madhouse on Madison.

While they weren’t fortunate enough to land LeBron, they still managed to put together, arguably, the best offseason in the League. Grabbing Carlos Boozer addressed their immediate need for a low-post scorer to compliment Joakim Noah, and Boozer — like Brand 10 years ago — is a surefiCarlos Boozer, Kyle Korver & Ronnie Brewerre 20 and 10. Next, they inked Kyle Korver, filling the void for a deadeye three-point threat who could spot up when defenses collapse on Derrick Rose’s penetration.

For a second, it looked like they might revert to their old ways of senseless action, as, just after signing Korver, they offered JJ Redick. While Redick may have improved each season of his career, let’s be honest, him and Korver are virtually the same player. Luckily for the Bulls, the Magic matched their offer and kept Redick in the Sunshine State and out of a Bulls uniform.

Doing so allowed the Bulls to ink Ronnie Brewer, my personal favorite Bulls move of the offseason. Brewer fills their dire need for a 2-man who can guard, and at 6-7 — with a 6-11 wingspan — Brewer is can definitely do that. All coming from Utah, each player has been hardened Jerry Sloan, bringing a mandatory toughness that’s required to be a contender in the League.

Add those players to Rose, Noah, Taj Gibson and James Johnson, and you’ve got a team that has a chance to battle for the East consistently for the next five to 10 years. In addition, since they didn’t get King James, they still have money to blow, as well as Luol Deng on the roster, who’s now as expendable as ever (though getting a team to take his contract is another story).

So after years of failed attempts and disappointing endings, the Bulls may finally gotten it right. And if they did, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

Solid moves. They are becoming a team with some depth. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together.

  • NBA kid

bulls will get third seed, no way the celtics get more wins than chicago

The Bucks are just as good a team as the Bulls are right now. Both had great off-seasons. Don’t sleep on the Bucks.

Good, there are some holes, like being a bit undersized at the frontline, but with 2 good D players in booz and noah, plus a defensive coach that shouldnt matter. 50 plus wins? Sure! Contenders? It will depend on that Rose guy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Hursty.. yes bucks. Watch out for Larry Sanders! Both bulls and bucks will go far not by the bigmen they have, but because of the Pointguards anchoring them.

@ Bryan Crawford: Right, so tell what exactly is the “distinct different”? The Bulls totally didn’t “acquire” Carlos Boozer and Ronnie Brewer and CJ Watson?
With all due respect: What the heck are you talking about? Are you telling me, with the team Miami had last year, signing LeBron James and Chris Bosh wasn’t the best move for the team? That doesn’t help construct A TEAM, to have two of the BEST PLAYERS at their positions, on your TEAM, paired with one of if not THE best shooting guard in the league? What?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Let me ask a serious question: How many people h@ting this Miami Big Three are Laker fans?
Seriously, I dislike the words “h@ting on” because it’s a copout term usually used by sh!tty rappers today, but some of you… Yeah don’t make me use it!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    ***”distinct difference”?

Teddy: have you read Crawford’s articles? Exactly why are you surprised he doesn’t make sense?

    Chicago Jazz FTL

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

WOW. good offseason? yes…better offseason than Miami? YOUR FU#KING DELUSIONAL..even the Knicks might had one better; Amare´s bettar than Booz and Randolph/Felton betta than Brewer/Korver..now, the Bulls are a better team than the Knicks but NY had the best offseason outside of Miami

  • bdub

Bryan Crawford you’re kooking it. Miami are still building a team. Just in a different way. Bulls definately top 5 in east this year.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

    agree with reflex on Deng

  • ClydeSays

I think Chi is very good team on paper.

But they have a big question mark with Boozer durability and health. Also Kover is a ghost on defense. Coach Thib will insist every player picks up their assignments, so that could be an issue.

Still, great pickups. They could surprise alot of people. The core of Rose/Deng/Noah is a good one. We’ll see…

@Rusry, No superstar would want to play with Kobe. He’s a douchebag rapist. A winning won for sure, but he’s about as beloved amongst his peers as I am in these comment sections.

As a Chicago fan, I like what the Bulls did this off-season. But let’s not go overboard with excitement; Korver is a great shooter and little else, Brewer is a great defender/energy guy but little else neither are what I would consider surefire starter-material on a Championship contender. Boozer is a good PF but Dirk, Gasol, Bosh, Duncan, Amare, and Garnett are all far better and guys like D.Lee, Z. Randolph and Aldridge are around the same level, so it is not like Bulls’ get a player that will dominate his position. Further with Noah kind of undersized at the 5, and Boozer standing 6-8 or 6-9 with short arms and little leaping ability the Bulls look kind of small inside. Rose is real good and might be great someday, but there are many good PG’s in the league and I really don’t see him improving to a level where he is far better than players like CP3, Deron, Jennings, Wall, Curry, Tyreke (maybe more of a SG), Westbrook and at least for a couple of more years the older guards like Nash, T. Parker – I hope that this Bulls team will challenge but I personally believe that they are at least a surefire All-Star away from being anywhere near LAL, Heat, Celts, Magic, and Thunder. They are more in the same level as Portland, Spurs, Dallas, Suns, Jazz and Bucks if these teams stay healthy one or two of them might put together a good run but the Bulls are unfortunately not winning a ring for at least 3 seasons, and by that time Boozer will be on the decline Carlos is no spring chicken and his health and athleticsm is already questionable.

    Bryan Crawford
Do you really think the Heat aren’t “building a team”? I know it’s popular to point out the team’s lack of depth, but they have about 8 solid rotation guys. I’m not sure what else you need considering the fact that you two of the three best players in the league on one squad and one of the top five power forwards in the league as well.
Chicago has a nice squad and if Rose and Noah continue to develop along with Gibson, they could be contenders in a couple years. But, right now, there is no question which team most knowledgable basketball fans would consider the better “team.”

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Don’t be wasting your time Allenp. It’s like discussing with a door. Anybody with a little bit of sense can see that LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Z, Haslem, Chalmers, Miller, Jones, Anthony, Howard and Magloire are a far better team than what the Bulls have. Considering that LeBron, Wade and Bosh will all play +35 minutes Heat actually have a very deep team.

  • T-Money

What’s underrated about Miami right now is the number of bodies they have at the 5. Z, Magloire, Anthony and Pittman just have to be straight goons vs Orlando and LA (the only 2 teams that pose a serious threat at the 5). Foul the sh-t out of Dwight, Drew and Pau.

    LZ
Ok, I thought I was tripping or something. I mean, those role players aren’t world beaters, but Shaq and Wade had even less, and let’s not even discuss what the Spurs and celtics were working with when they got their chips.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

LZ, I would cosign your entire giant post but putting OKC on ORL,LAL,BOS and MIA level´s just not that clever..they´re cleary on the second tier you put in next.

Well with what the Bulls have done getting players I dont think just 50 win will be the most I am looking at 55-58 games and win the central probably making them a second or third seed. This year is the year of
second team players who can decided who wins what, just having a first team wont win it subs will play a great role in determining everything in the NBA this season and so on.

  • hammer

Very optimistic about the upcoming season but still I have 2 as well as all bulls fans keep our guard up.don’t get overly excited just yet. Let’s wait till when the season starts. Its a very promising team that I have been waiting 4 2 b assembled since the dynasty was torn apart in 98.12 yrs is way 2 long! One things 4 sure:korver is the best shooter we have had since steve kerr

  • zack

I’ve grown up watching the Bull’s along with my brothers and 70 yr. old grandma. I love them to death, though the good years(Michal Jordan era) and though the bad years recently. Going on 10 odd years without a championship, but the blakhawks showed that Chicago is a winning city and will not quit without a fight.
