Cavs Set To Move On

You can’t replace LeBron James, but you can add quality pieces. Via Cleveland.com: “According to multiple sources, the team is getting ready to move forward and begin to retro-fit the roster post-LeBron James. After being forced to sit on the sidelines for the first 10 days of free agency waiting on James, they now have clarity to their situation and appear ready to make some decisions. General Manager Chris Grant is considering three options to acquire players. One is to use his $5.7 million mid-level exception, which league sources say he’s ready to execute. Another is to use the $14.5 million trade exception the team got by sending James to the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade on Friday. That exception can be used in whole or part and, in effect, allows the Cavs to acquire players without trading anything else back…One is Atlanta Hawks small forward Josh Childress, who hasn’t played in the NBA for the last two years after taking a lucrative offer to play for Olympiakos in Greece. Grant knows Childress well from his days in the Atlanta front office when Childress was drafted…Another player the Cavs have on their radar, according to sources, is Houston Rockets restricted free agent guard Kyle Lowry…One of the options also being examined is whether to use their big trade exception now or save it for later when the options might improve. A player on the trading block who could be acquired this way is Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Al Jefferson.”

Seeing kriz’s comment was worth reading through all those underwhelming options Cleveland has.

    lol ^ so true

  • ktokyo

man they are so screwed… Who’s going to want to play in this mess.

  • olddirtyphil

they dont need al thats for sure what they need is to get some who can at least score and keep fans interested. maybe richard jefferson could help for the moment

  • AT33

what great options they’ve got, cheese almost as good as #23 that just left.

Know they want to get a good young big man like Al Jefferson. They couldn’t do that when james was there. huh. They kept on getting old past their prime players like james was old himself. Intresting that the asylum bound owner said that they will try their harder than they have ever before, so they weren’t trying hard before. F**k Clev and the cavs

I wouldn’t go as far as you guys to put this team down. Individually, the talent on Cavs is very solid. They have athletic players who are able to score and hit shots. Anthony Parker can easily give you 15-20 per night, Jamario Moon, once he improves his shooting, could be very versatile piece. His vertical, making him defensive threat, good blocker, could be a starter in my opinion. Hickson is a star on rise. Mo Williams and Delonte West are pure shooters, we’ve all seen what they can do. Their leader left. Antawan Jamison will have more shots and he can execute. Now they will have to learn to rely on eachother and play as a team to come back strong into Playoff contention. I wouldn’t write them off just like that, not yet anyway. This could be their blessing in disguise. Add another piece such as Al Jefferson or Richard Jefferson and you’ve got very, very decent team. If they mash well, this team could compete with more teams than y’all think. I can guarantee you that.

yeah i agree with RickyRude, they need one player at the SF and they can make the playoffs, also they have a good coach…

They are in trouble. Childress and Lowry are complimentary pieces. Everyone RickyRude mentioned are more complimentary peices. Who’s gonna be the man? Al Jefferson is a solid big but has shown in Mini that he’s not a go to guy. The only time in recent history that a big name star has gone to Clevland was LeBron and that was through the draft.

  • WangChung

Agree with most posters above. This team is screwed.

@RickyRude: Every player you mentioned is a role player. Among the two best players you mentioned currently on the Cavs squad, Delonte is an excellent defender and decent shooter, but no star. He wasn’t even the best player on his collegiate squad. And for Mo … well, no comment. Until this team can lure/draft a player who can dominate the game, it’s not looking good for them.

I don’t know who’s in more troubles, Cleveland or Toronto? The Cavs still has Mo Williams & Jamison while the Raptors has a developing Bargnani, Calderon & Jack. But at the same time, Toronto expected Bosh to go away unlike Cleveland who thought James would stay.

@Ricky – Delonte is not a pure shooter, he’s more effective when slashing or taking a step-back jumper off the dribble. If anything, Cavs fans wanted him to be more assertive with his shot and shoot more but he does a lot more than just shoot.

This highlights exactly why Lebron was done with the Cavs. Nobody wants to go to Cleveland so the only options Cleveland has are through the draft or by acquiring spare parts from tanking teams. The Cavs have just enough talent – and more than enough talent with Lebron – to avoid a high pick in the lottery so at best they’ll be swimming in mediocrity for a long time. Of course this is a general problem for the NBA, because big time players aren’t attracted to most of the league’s teams due to location alone.

If Oklahoma City and Portland can do it then Cleveland can do it too. It’s no different from playing in Detroit, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Sacramento or Charlotte. They got 2 1st round picks and 2nd round picks. Also they might get another 1st round pick from Miami for next year. They know no super-dud (Which is what I would call these so-called “superstars.”)would want to come to Cleveland, the home LeBron built. He didn’t get any rings but he took that place from the grave to been known around the league. I’ll give LeBron dap for accomplishing that. They will have to start building in the draft and hopefully they will be in the playoff picture. NBA Title: Denied.

Back to the lottery they go. See you guys next decade.

    2011 Champions! Book it!

Richard Jefferson seems to be the ideal pickup for the Cavs. He has played for Scott before and is experienced and talented enough to guide the Cavs through a transition period. Plus, he could be had for cheap given his poor season with the Spurs and impending lockout.

rickyrude. I swear im shocked reading you saying anthony parker can give us 15-20 a night! If that was true we should be champs by now! FTW!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Bah, Kyle Lowry is staying, and J-Chill is with the Suns now.

  • Joe

    Iverson to the Cavs?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

so now here we start. first, everyone is free for trade if the RIGHT deal comes (maybe execpt andy), meaning the cavs have a clear advantage.. NO to crazy signings like iverson! Childress/Lowry/RJ is good but only for the cheapest price and only for a short span. Get Big Al, he’s no go-to-guy but he’s great enough as a scorer and rebounder down low.. delonte has a non guaranteed deal so he’s a major trade asset and surely will be traded soon.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    @ Joe: NO!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Mo williams wants to play in cleveland.. i dont if what he’s sayin is true but damn, HE’S GOT TO GO! see irony, a player we want to stay is gone, and the player we want gone actually wants to stay! Damn.. Anyway he still needs to be traded. This is largely a point guard’s league now, so we need that championship caliber PG.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Chris Paul wont be here, He is lebron’s bestfriend, and he’s now with LRMR.. so lebron wont let that happen.. At point, George Hill is on top of my list but it is a long shot, but i really hope we could get him. next are Collison, and if were to get Big Al, hopefully we could also tap Johnny Flynn.. At SG i want OJ MAYO another long shot. GET PIECES FOR THE FUTURE! a good defensive center together with Big Al, Jamison, Andy and JJ if wont get traded.. Ellis is great but attitude and contract is.. We also need a backcourt of shooters-defenders..
