Celtics Sign Von Wafer

Wafer is headed to Beantown with a one-year deal, sayeth Hoopsworld: “The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation. The deal will be fully guaranteed and worth the veteran’s minimum. The Celtics had spent the past week looking for a guard to replace Tony Allen. Eddie House, Roger Mason, and Jarvis Hayes were mentioned as options, but the team ultimately went with Wafer because of his ability to score off of the bench.”

Von Wafer is instant offense, that year in Houston was awesome. Surprise no other team offered him a longer deal.

Seed: talented but kinda stupid ive heard. throws tantrums too. but celts are good with dealing with headcases. instant offense, questionable d.

Von is instant offense but thier bench is more offense then defense basically. It’s still a good pickup.

@t-money: don’t forget that ray allen’s defense was also questionable before he came to boston. since arriving, though, he’s become a very good perimeter defender. i also think he played outstanding D on Kobe in this year’s finals and in 2008, so maybe there’s hope for someone like Von Wafer.

good pick up.. boston is very good at picking up seemingly unwanted players and turning them into productive players who play very effectively.. good work by boston

von is a head case.. that’s probably why he didn’t get a lot of looks with other teams.. but he’s instant offense coming off the bench.. another guard that couldn’t crack into kobe’s minutes.. but hopefully develops somewhere else.. hopefully he and nate to fight in the showers..

  • unrel Posted: Jul.30 at 12:59 pm
    don’t fight.. that is..

Wafer was injured most of last season, which is in part why Houston didnt offer him a deal, but they were still only looking for a short and cheap one. He couldnt pass physicals (back problem), which is why memphis also passed on him and teams werent really calling him up. That being said, he is tantrum prone, too emotional, not crazy though. His defense is also pretty bad, all reasons why he can’t get a long term contract.

I was wondering where Von Wafer went, He shulda taken his talents to southbeach…especially since he took the minimum. THta would’ve be a great backup for Wade

Good pickup, a younger, taller version of House really, since both of them are spark guys that can come off the bench and score points like crazy, and both have pedestrian defensive ability. Good choice though.

Back problems are the kiss of death in professional sports.

Von Wafer is a beautiful pick up for this squad. Supremely athletic and quick, with a reliable outside jumper. They won’t be missin Tony Allen a lick

Wafer’s been a beast. Always surprises me when the NBA brain trust is surprised by guys getting burn and actually succeeding (see:brown, shannon). If a guy’s a McDonalds All American and a D-1 stud shouldn’t he be on the NBA radar? at least a little? Will Bynum’s another one. How are people surprised when players that have been stars their whole lives end up being effective in the L? P.S. Von got a few big time offers but he couldn’t pass his physical. He’s got back problems. Could be another T-Mac situation (minus the scoring titles). kinda sad too. he’s got potential. Like being a headcase has ever stopped an NBA team from picking up a talented player (see:artest, ron).

Really? I dunno how I feel about this. Also, all I can think of right now is his dunk versus the Cs where he rejected himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIFwBPvc6_0
