Chauncey Billups Confident Melo Will Re-Sign in Denver

Billups tells the Denver Post he’s hopeful that Anthony will re-up with the Nuggets: “So, Chauncey. You think Melo is going to take the extension? ‘He better, or he’s going to have a problem on his hands when he sees me,’ Chauncey Billups said with a chuckle. Sources close to Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony have said that he expects to accept the team’s offer of a three-year, $65 million contract extension, and Billups said Tuesday he shares that confidence. ‘I’m hoping he does. I know Melo loves Denver, it’s pretty much home and I think that he will (sign the extension),’ Billups said by phone from Las Vegas, where the Nuggets guard is practicing with Team USA. “But I’ve seen stranger things … All I can do is be hopeful.” While the newlywed Melo is winding down his honeymoon and thus skipping this summer with the U.S. national team, Billups is entrenched with Team USA, practicing through Friday in Las Vegas. Billups joined 20 other NBA players, notably Rajon Rondo and Lamar Odom.”

Denver is playing it smart right here. With the lockout pending, they are hedging their bets with Melo. If he signs now, he’ll be guaranteed a salary while the league is not playing. If he doesnt’ sign, when the lockout is over, and he’s a free agent, he won’t be able to make much anywhere else according to the proposed CBA, and he’ll have way more incentive to stay in Denver…albeit for a smaller salary than he’d be making if he signed the extension now. A three year deal is pretty good for him, too. It still allows him one more chance at a max deal when this contract is up.

Chauncey Billups should just keep his big mouth shut about Carmelo Anthony’s BUSINESS! Really now, Mr. “Big Shot” should know all too well, the NBA is a business first and foremost, and at the end of the day, a team will cash you in when you least expect for what they deem the best package of assets in return. It would be a BAD business decision by a player of Carmelo Anthony’s caliber to give up his leverage by signing an extension to lock himself up in small market Denver, on a Nuggets franchise with a whole lot of ownership, front office, and roster question marks swirling around it heading into the 2010-11 season. That same Nuggets franchise that has shown more commitement to avoiding luxury tax, than winning the past two seasons, which in my opinion speaks volumes about an owner (Silent Stanley) spread too thin in the sporting world, who most likely has to sell his “beloved” Nuggets to complete his purchase of the St. Louis Rams. And if Denver is really Carmelo’s “home” as Chauncey suggest, then why did Carmelo get married in the Big Apple, right after he and La La sold their home in Denver? Hmmm…if I were in Melo’s situation, I’d want to play at the World’s Most Famous Arena for the Knicks in the BIG city I just got married in, but I must confess, I’m in a New York state of mind. P.S. Dear Denver “fans”, enjoy Melo for one more season, and don’t be selfish now, you will have had him for a total 8 seasons by next off-season.

If Melo got married in NYC why did he buy a house in LA to use during the shooting of the reality show surrounding his marriage?

Melo to NY to form new big 3 with Amare and Chris P.
