Chicago Bulls Sign Ronnie Brewer

by Lang Whitaker

The Chicago Bulls continue reuniting former members of the Utah Jazz, today signing former Utah (by way of Memphis) shooting guard Ronnie Brewer. Brewer will join Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver in Chicago.

The Bulls had previously signed Magic restricted free agent JJ Redick to an offer sheet, which Orlando announced this morning they would match.

(Redick, by the way, was not a “magical” restricted free agent. He played for the Magic, which is why I capitalized the word Magic. Just saying.)

With Redick off the market, Chicago inked Brewer to a three-year deal worth a reported $12.5 million.

saw this coming when magic officially matched redick. is deron williams next?

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

deron and rose? highly unlikely. very good signing by chicago. still could use some shooters though, unless rose added the 3ball to his game?

Derrick claims he now has a consistent 3-point shot. I’ll believe it when I see it, although I’ve been really impressed with the way he’s worked his butt off in the offseason the past two years. As for the Brewer signing, I was dissapointed we missed out on Redick, but Brewer should be awesome in Thibs’ system (I think. He is a first-year head coach, after all). Athletic, solid defender, and I can already see him and Rose leading multiple fast-breaks in Chi-town!

Also, with three former Jazz players on the Bulls, I can already see that many people will try to compare Rose and DWill and question who’s better. I think this is unfair to both of them, as they have very different games, and I could never side with one over the other. Yes, Rose grew up in Chicago and plays for the Bulls, but Williams put in work for the Fighting Illini and led them to the ’05 title game. So while Deron hails from Texas, he still gets mad love from the Ill State and from me.

I think this makes more sense than them getting Redick. He’ll surely thrive under Thibs.

  • ConeyIslander

Chicago Jazz indeed! The Bulls are getting really really scary.

  • skywalker

chicago is taking all their players, i guess all those mormons in salt lake aren’t as cool as everybody says they are

  • Corbin

We need another shooter but at least he can play Defense and probably can catch some oops once in a while.

  • Scottie Pimpin

nothing wrong with signing jerry sloan disciples. this guy is big and athletic. and best of all a defensive player. good pick. i liked trying to riddick but not at the price they were offering.

  • c_cantrell

wow chi-town is building up one heck of a team.. with the additions of boozer, korver, and brewer this team now becomes a contender.. boozer brings post scoring, korver brings peremiter shooting, and brewer brings peremiter d.. all 3 characteristics that the bulls were not overwhelmed with this past season.. it will be very exciting to see how far they go in the post season.. rose will be in the mvp conversations before too long

  • rico

Chicago needs to sign Dee Brown as a 3rd string PG…he’s a son of the Chi and a former Utah Jazz – perfect!

Now, if Chicago can convince Sloan to come home – it’s over! Just imagine what that dude could do with a big market team, he’s worked wonders in the small market!

  • Celtics fan

The bulls still won’t get out the first round, but they’ll have alot of rebounds again…Still not enough..Sorry bulls fans, but you lost the lebron sweepstakes.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

    chicago is looking niiiiice

  • C-Lo_The_Great

not out of first round?? that’s pretty funny you made me laugh there

  • Lakeshow

@skywalker – there are more mormons in california than utah so….does that mean LA is gonna lose Kobe and crew soon?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

The Chicago Jazz, er I mean Bulls are looking good.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance

Chicago is quietly building a solid team. They have scoring, shooting, defense. The east battles should be great this year.

Anyone else feel like Orlando should be making some sort of moves?

  • Coffeebean

OK, so we had a touch of Rose’, and we added a Boozer and a Brewer, now perhaps a Miller/Brewer connection to a Boozer for the throw-down? Wow, I’m feeling sh*t-faced just writing this stuff on a Fri-day!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LOL @ Coffebean. Maybe after every Bulls victory at the UC this season they should play “Blame it on the Alcohol”!

  • T-Money

swingin for the fence (lbj, wade) and ending up with a grounder to 3rd (korver, brewer).theyre not better than boston, orlando and miami for sure. and hawks might be better than them too. first round exist is a real possibility.

  • Coffeebean

Cheers!! And no wonder Booze and Brew got chucked outta Utah!! If we get 6 games out of a Miami series, I’ll chug a 5th of “Pete” Meyers Rum in front of Gibsons Restaurant…Ummm, sorry, but I suffer from severe to quite severe Bermanism. I’m getting help.

haha that’s funny Coffeebean. And does anyone else think Boozer shoulda switched his number to 40? I think Brewer is a better pick up than Redick would’ve been. He’s got great defense.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Wow, great pick-up. The Bulls are seriously building a team 12-deep.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

It’s always good when T-Money, aka Shawt Bus Shawty, weighs in.

  • shaquia

oh snap i cant wait the bulls are my fav team im a die hard bulls fan and derrick rose faN CANT wait till this season start im going 2 all the games ……♥♥♥

  • o no

Didnt memphis do this trade so they could keep brewer? Wow they look horrible here giving up a #9 pick to utah for brewer and now they have nothing…

  • Bassbesteck

    okay…

    central divison champs `11 anyone?

this looks a lot like the team i have on 2k10…

Still miami will win it all, but they’re gonna have a lot of trouble with the bulls…

they are for sure one of the top 5 teams in the east right now, imho

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Rose is a long ways behind deron, but still very good

  • zeekthefreak

think about it my loyal fellow Chitown fans. With LeBron, the pressure would be immediate championship. WIthout him, they built up a solid squad which is tough and will compete. Bulls to the Semis!

  • relax

my friend just showed me some article stating that brewer is an allstar in the making and that he can lock down dwade and lebron allowing the bulls to match up against the dreamteam i disagree tho any thoughts on this?

  • Be Equal

Utah fans would have loved to have Brewer back. But i’m glad to see him go to a monster of a team. Chicago is looking more beastly by the day.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

If Lebron had went to the Bulls with these signing they are the best team in the league. BOOK IT!!!

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Enigmatic: NO ONE should question whos better between DWill and DRose(only a ChiTown nut job to do that)…its not even in the same ballpark, not close AT ALL…and pray those exJazz guys bring something of the JerrySloan AWSOME OFFENSE WITH THEM..Brewer can lock down cats and finish at the rim, just dont ask him to shoot to mutch, good deal for daBulls

  • james

If the can get Rudy Fernandez they’re set

  • Fat Lever

Thought Redick would have been a better fit, since he can get open three’s off of Rose’s drives and Boozer’s attention grabbing post game.

  • Diesel

@T-money and Celtics fan – bulls are going farther than the celtics and their bad hips. Keep in mind the bulls will win the central, most likely giving them the third seed, which means we don’t play the heat until the conference finals. Bulls need to pick up Barnes and Brad Miller and we’re set. We still have $8MM left to spend.

  • http://bulls.com airs

derrick aint as far behind deron williams as people think.
bull v heat for the east

  • WangChung

It’s unreal how CHI just gutted the Jazz team. Good moves, but I’m with T-money on this. Unless they pick up another competent, tough big man (Miller), they’re gonna get abused by the 4-5 big bodies that the Celts will throw at them. And we’ve seen how Rose and Rondo are equally unable to stop each other.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Brewer is one of my favorite players in the league. This is an awesome pickup for the Bulls. Honestly, they are starting to look like the team to beat in the East.

  • bashmo

Dammm…CHicago is turning into a powerhouse east squad…seems like they will be a top team in the E along with the Heat, my Magic, Celtics, possibly NY…

I mean, the addition of KOrver, Boozer, and Brewer makes them a legitmate deep playoff team. THe addition of Boozer means that the Chicago now has a solid, legitmate low post scorer, as well as one of the best pick and roll players in the league today. With Noah and Brewer as defensive pieces, this Bulls squad is looking reaaaaaaalll good right now.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Bulls are taking Jazz players while Heat are taking Cav’s players.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Next summer it could be the Knicks swooping the Suns roster as Nash is a free agent after this coming season. D’Antoni, Amare, Nash in NY. But prefer CP3 in NY as it will be an up and coming team then, especially if they get Melo.

  • Holiday

Brewer is just as bad@$$ out and about as he is on the court, but Boozer will not be what he’s expected to be I promise! he’s injury prone can’t defend taller players like Gasol for instant, and he dose not show up to the playoffs!
