D-Wade: PG Spot ‘Mario Chalmers’ to Lose’

Wade tells the Miami Herald he will not take over Chalmers’ gig … unless Mario royally screws things up, that is: “Amid speculation that Dwyane Wade could end up playing more point guard, Wade said Sunday that he expects to continue starting at shooting guard - not point guard - and that point guard is ‘Mario Chalmers’ job to lose.’ Wade expects the Heat to start a traditional point guard: `I think that would be the plan. I would like to play [shooting guard].’ At times, the Heat likely will use a lineup with Wade handling point guard duties and playing alongside starting small forward LeBron James, swingman Mike Miller and two power rotation players. But Wade does not expect that lineup to start games, meaning Miller would come off the bench. ‘I’ve always played a lot of point guard,’ Wade said. ‘I just don’t want to be labeled as a [point guard]. It’s Mario’s job to lose, if you want to say. I’m not going to try to take it from him. He can have a great impact on this year.’”

Editors - please check the grammar in the first sentence.
    Thanks.
ps - the word missing is ‘he’.

  • tom Posted: Jul.19 at 9:07 am
maybe miami herald isn“t a bad point guard after all :-)

  • peter Posted: Jul.19 at 9:09 am
“Two power rotation players” - they’ve already forgotten about Chris Bosh!

  • chiqo Posted: Jul.19 at 9:13 am
with wade and lebron on the floor, point guard is just a technical term anyway. how much time would he even have the ball in his hands? whoever plays the one just needs to hit open jumpers and play d. if it’s chalmers, so be it. if not, who’ll notice?

  • Ali Posted: Jul.19 at 9:13 am
Bosh who…Somebody tell me what Bosh has accomplished besides being a stand out on a horrible team for the past few years. Has he won a playoff game?

  • LDR4 Posted: Jul.19 at 9:16 am
Since when did Mario Chalmers become a legitimate starting point guard in this league? Oh right, when a team blows all its money on max players bench players have to fill starter roles.

  • LDR4 Posted: Jul.19 at 9:21 am
Mario Chalmers needs to enjoy this ride while he can. Only fans with deep knowledge of the sport knew his name before this summer. Now he has the opportunity to become better known. With the spotlight on him how will he perform?

  • Yann Blavec Posted: Jul.19 at 9:30 am
    Mario Chalmers = Rajon Rondo.

  • C-Lo_The_Great Posted: Jul.19 at 9:35 am
    Mario Chalmers < Rajon Rondo.

  • truhero Posted: Jul.19 at 9:36 am
^ exactly. who was Rajon Rondo in 2008? same situation here, except more talent and more time to develop. All Mario has to do is hold it down and hit open 3’s for now; just like Rondo picked off of Ray, PP, and KG, Mario will do the same off of D-Wade, Bron, and Bosh. He’ll be fine.

  • En Fuego Posted: Jul.19 at 9:38 am
some of you sound like complete idiots! how did they “blow” money on max POTENTIAL players who took less money? just because Bosh was on a bad team for a few years, does not mean he’s a bad player. he’s a very good player that was on a bad team.

  • Groves Posted: Jul.19 at 9:41 am
mario Chalmers x5 < Rajon rondo

  • Groves Posted: Jul.19 at 9:44 am
chalmers can’t shoot the three at all… which is what the heat need considering that not one of our ‘Big 3′ is anything like a ray allen. sign kenyon dooling, mike james, maybe penny hardaway :P…. or if we want retirees go and get allan houston

  • EJ Posted: Jul.19 at 9:47 am
Mario Chalmers = Rajon Rondo is genious, everybody was like Boston’s not gonna win anything with Rondo as their PGin 08, this is the same exact scenario, but I doubt Mario will become half the player Rondo is.

  • WangChung Posted: Jul.19 at 9:55 am
Not really understanding all the hate for Chalmers. It’s not like the kid has to be Steve Nash or anything. He’s a combo guard with a nose for the ball, but more importantly, he’s a defensive stalwart. The dude sets records for steals wherever he goes.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.19 at 9:56 am
So, Wade has voiced a thousand times that he wans Jason WIlliams… yet the HEat haven’t SPOKEN to the dude. What’s up with that?

  • WangChung Posted: Jul.19 at 10:02 am
@Jukai: I’m a huge J-Will fan, and believe his ball handling and veteran savvy can help out this squad. The problem is that he’s perpetually out of shape.

  • TPOW Posted: Jul.19 at 10:58 am
Don’t sleep on ‘Rio… He’s got legit NBA size, a high basketball IQ, good ball handling skills and a knack for getting the ball to the right guys at the right time (which, for him, just got a whole hell of a lot easier)… He has also proven that, if need be, he can hit the clutch shot - what’s up, Memphis?

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jul.19 at 11:26 am
Mario Chalmers + Mario Van Peebles + Mario Lopez < Rajon Rondo. And this coming from a Sixer fan.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jul.19 at 11:39 am
Yea rondo really showed how great he is in the finals, shooting a sizzling 27% from the ft line. And generally crumbling in the last two games and hiding in a hole cuz he was scared and couldnt do anything, can shoot, cant drive cuz then its fts, what a failure

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jul.19 at 12:27 pm
Tarzan, no way the Celts would have gotten to the Finals if Rondo hadn’t carried them throughout the playoffs, and he’s the main reason they beat the Cavs. No one on the Cavs could keep him from initiating the offense with his drives, passes, etc. The FT thing is an issue, but that and shooting are the only holes in his game. Both fixable. He doesn’t have to be Ray Allen to be that much more dangerous either. Just improve his J marginally. Again, this coming from a Sixer fan. Shoot me.

  • C-Lo_The_Great Posted: Jul.19 at 12:30 pm
yea and rondo has a ring and helped his team to their second finals in three years what has chalmers done since he got into the league?? right absolutely nothing altough its only been 2 years i dont see chalmers becoming like rondo but you never know what can happen

  • vanillagorrila Posted: Jul.19 at 12:56 pm
Chalmers is a good pg from a defensive standpoint which is fairly rare at the 1 and can finish around the rim. He doesn’t need to play like a point with wade and bron on the floor and as long as he can improve his 3 percentage he should be a fine starter.

  • riggs Posted: Jul.19 at 1:21 pm
lol @ tarzan you must be the only idiot still hating on rondo. good luck with that.

  • Luiyo Posted: Jul.19 at 1:41 pm
The Heat should bring back Carlos Arroyo, he took over the starting spot over Chalmers for a reason, he’s a seasoned veteran,he’s a steady hand, 2nd best asst/t.o. ratio in the all NBA last season and could be a good not great spot on shooter

  • Reemo Posted: Jul.19 at 4:00 pm
Check that 2007-2008 Kansas Jayhawks film (especially the Championship Game) for some truth about Mario Chalmers. He’s not as bad as most of you make him to be

  • rich Posted: Jul.19 at 4:39 pm
i can see it now chalmers brings it up hand off to wade, dbble screen chalmers and Z for lebron if wade dont beat his man, bron gets it at the top o the key pick and roll w bosh… itss a wrap if those guys can find a way to hold bynum and gasol

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jul.19 at 5:14 pm
Reemo, the difference between 2008 Chalmers and 2010 Chalmers is the level of competition he’s facing. Yea, his game looks great when he’s going against mid-majors as opposed to dudes like D Rose or even middle of the pack NBA PG’s like Bibby.

  • T-Money Posted: Jul.19 at 5:53 pm
Still up to Spo. But they’re fine with Chalmers starting at the 1. Ultimately, he has to knock down open 3s. If he can’t, they’ll sit him or trade him mid-season. The crunch time line up will be Wade-Miller-James-Bosh-UD or Z anyways.

  • Rikson Posted: Jul.20 at 8:17 am
Actually i like chalmers, and i predict a similar growth as rondo had with the big 3! To compare the last Years of the two shows you have no idea what you’re talking about… Rondo wouldn’t have done ish on that heat roster… Book it!

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jul.21 at 7:18 am
When The C’s Big 3 weren’t doing ish or were out with injuries RR actually stepped it up and played incredible. Go back to the [layoffs when KG was not playing….
