DeMarcus Cousin’s High School Coach Lands Job With Kings

Otis Hughley, a familiar face to Cousins is now on board with Sacramento, in the hopes that he’ll help the young big with the transition to the L: “Otis has a wealth of experience working with young players and is ready to jump to the NBA,’ said [Paul] Westphal. ‘We’re very excited to add him to our staff to replace Bryan Gates.’ ‘It’s an exciting time,’ [Otis] Hughley said. ‘I’m looking forward to being with an organization that’s proven and that’s exhibited class. I’m really looking forward to working with Coach Westphal and his staff.’ Hughley had coached at LeFlore High School in Mobile, Ala. for seven years (2004-2010), guiding the Rattlers to six straight regional appearances and a 6A state title in 2007. While at LeFlore, he coached current Kings center Demarcus Cousins. Before coaching at LeFlore, Hughley was an assistant coach at several universities, including Wright State, Liberty and Southern. Hughley’s experience also includes coaching for the league’s NBA China program and working over 10 years at Pete Newell’s ‘Big Man Camp.’”

He actually sounds like he has experience and can help the Kings players. At least he gets an opportunity to move to the NBA level and who knows, he could be a Head Coach in the future.

hopefully he can negate the “COusins’s is too immature” argument

Good move to try to keep thier new star ‘grounded’. Also nice to see somebody get the opportunity to prove themselves at the next level.

Might just work out for the best.

I was happy to read that the coach actually has had coaching experience aside from high school. It rarely works when you bring on a high school coach just for 1 player. This looks like it could be successful. I hope so.

So they’re bringing in the guy who let a kid develop into a baby with a bad attitude to help coach and control the baby with a bad attitude?

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.31 at 4:13 am
@Bryan – It was either him or his mother. At least this guy has coached bigs before…. sure big babies. Bigs none the less.

Where do you think Cousins got that cry baby mentality from?? Exactly! If you seen this dude coach before you’d understand where Cousins picked up those habits from… Lotta knowledge doesn’t hold back from the fact that some people think their above the “honor of the game”…
