Heat Add Another Free Agent

D.A. broke the news: “A league source says that the Miami Heat have convinced forward James Jones — who they just bought out two weeks ago to clear additional cap space for LeBron James and Chris Bosh — to return to the Heat next season. Terms of the new deal were not immediately available. Miami bought out the final three years of Jones’s five-year, $23 million deal, paying approximately $1.8 million to Jones this year to get out of the rest of his old deal, which would have paid him $4.65 million next season. The savings gave the Heat enough cap space to convince James and Bosh to take less than maximum deals to join Dwyane Wade next season. The 29-year-old Jones had played his last two seasons in Miami but was injured for large stretches of the last two seasons.”

    Nice. Good shooter.

  • ShadiestBen

@Moose, James Jones is the man that pushes them over the top?!

  • WB30

@Wes, Riley better run if they don’t win that Trophy!

How is this legal per the CBA? If you get bought out, you shouldn’t be able to return to the team that bought you out. Not like James Jones will make that much of a difference, he’s been done since he got to Portland.

Dma, they bought out his last contract, then hes a fa and can go anywhere, even same team if they want. Heat have amassed a nice supporting cast

haha and the first step backwards for the Heat

  • Holiday

Man all that does is help fill the roster, but it’s still a good pick up there gonna be legit come late October! I aint handing them the title already but anybody that thinks the Lakers are just too good I wouldn’t be so confident!

1 – I don’t know how Riley can be blamed if they don’t win. He did his job. He got the pieces in place. At some point the players are accountable for winning. And 2 – I don’t think I would haha a team w/ Wade, James and Bosh. I don’t care if they signed my grandmother, it still wouldn’t be a step backwards. Be smart people.

Oh and this reminds me of what the Celtics have been doing the last couple seasons, except the most the guy’s they pick up are on the verge of collecting social security!

    Miami Heat is overrated :D

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Remember when this guy was a pacer and the NBA switched to those synthetic balls and he was shooting like 65% from 3 a couple months into the season, then they switched the ball back to leather and he hasnt really done sh!t since…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    @ShadiestBen: Sarcasm.

  • http://twitter.com/darrellma dma

the celtics were getting guys from other teams after they were cut (Finley, Mikki Moore). this is different because james jones was a heat prior. this should be changed in next CBA

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

That’s a very good pick-up for the Heat. James Jones can shoot the ball and create his own shot. The Suns got him a few years ago to help with the loss of Joe Johnson–probably because he looks like a taller and skinnier version of Joe Johnson–and he played decent ball. Not great stats, but he’s got good range and 3 point %.

nice, gotta love J Boogie…..if they even call him that…lol, anyways you need as many shooters as you can get with this kinda squad. The Big 3 aren’t gonna have a sky high percentage beyond the arc

Have we found out if Riley is going to be gunning for the coach of the year award or is he ‘settling’ for the GM award….? Also was there any substance to the rumour that MJ has been in talks with Pat Riley to wear come back as PG for this team? It would be an ideal role for him. No pressure, just facilitate and add RINGS.

  • lazaruz

let me get this straight. they buy him out of his final 3 years of his contract paying him 4-5mill a year. so he gets aproximately 13-15mill for 1.8mill……….now they sign him back for minimum.

    something aint right here. shananigans!!!

  • ShadiestBen

@Moose: my bad. @Teddy-the-Bear, James Jones is a good open shooter, definitely not a guy to create his own offense. In Phoenix he was specifically told to catch and pass or catch and shoot otherwise something bad usually happened.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

Teddy: I gotta disagree. He was pretty awful in Phoenix. I have vivid memories of him losing the ball whenever he put it on the floor. He made Wally Szerbiak look like Allen Iverson.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

There is a such thing as too much talent… look at the 02 Lakers with Shaq/Bryant/Malone/Payton.. Whom lost to the Spurs in the W.C.F.s Heat are putting together some nice role players around their big 3, But lets not call them champs just yet…

  • Jelte

An injury to any of the big three will change everything. Just like any of the big three getting frustrated with the number of shorts they can take. I’m not convinced until they win it all.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Juks – gotta have a shooter in the corner man.

  • ramnb21

@BossTerry didn’t that Laker squad make it to the finals then lose to the Pistons?

  • http://slamonline.com JL

can we get better details on the buyout? is james jones that stupid to throw away that much money? he had a 5 year 23 mil deal, so about 4.6 mil per, and 3 years left, and he lets them buy him out for 1.8 mil, and signs back on for minimum. so first year he’s not that far off, about 3 mil. then 2nd and 3rd year he’s really losing alot of money. something “under the table” going on here!

  • T-Money

Jukai: Non-issue. Playing with Wade and Bron he’ll be INSTRUCTED to not put it on the floor. Stay in the corner and drain them suckas.
