UPDATE: Joe Johnson Staying With Atlanta

According to FanHouse‘s Sam Amick, we should have Johnson’s final decision by Sunday evening: “After some deliberation about whether it’d be better to play for New York or Chicago, two sources close to Johnson told FanHouse at 6 p.m. Pacific Saturday that he will make his final decision in the next day and that ‘barring a major change in the next 24 hours it’s Atlanta.’ The second source said he was simply ‘leaning’ toward the Hawks, which could give forward Amar’e Stoudemire and the Knicks a sliver of hope to ramp up their own recruiting efforts.”

UPDATE: It’s a done deal. “After two days of tinkering with contract language, Joe Johnson has agreed to a six-year, $119 million deal to stay with the Atlanta Hawks…’His priorities are his family, his friends and his game,’ Johnson’s agent Arn Tellem wrote in a blog entry for The Huffington Post. ‘Joe could have forced a sign-and-trade deal for five years with another team, but he decided that winning in Atlanta would be more meaningful. When the Hawks offered the maximum – six years – he happily reciprocated.’”

I can imagine Joe speaks like Cookie Monster these days, “Money?! Me love money stacks!” Om nom nom. That’s him eating away Atlanta’s financial future. Maybe with this giant contract looming he will decide not to suck in the playoffs.

He was garbage in the playoffs while he was playing for a contract… imagine how he’ll play with some financial security!! watch out hotlanta

I wish the Hawks never made the offer. I would have rather lost him and saved the money for a TRUE franchise player in the future; even if it meant taking a step back. Furthermore, I wish someone Arther Blankish would purchase this team. The NO-Spirit group obviously can’t afford it. While other teams are vying for two and possibly three max players we can only vy for one – Joe Johnson….Arrrghhhhh

  • rav

nice player but never a max deal player

  • Jose

Welp, ESPN called it. JJ’s taking the 120 mil from ATL. I wish i could throw money around like that. Really bad contract, It’s right up their W/ Rashard’s

NO!!! I’d rather see JJ walk than get max deal. Looks like it’s gonna another year of being swept in the conference semis again…

Terrible deal I would have signed and traded him Joe is a number 2 guy I would rather start Jamal Crawford move Josh Smith to the 3 Horford to the 4 and do a sign and trade for a center like Al Jefferson Marc Gasol or Chris Kahman.

As a Knick fan I must speak on the sigh of relief being experienced that New York didn’t sign Joe Johnson to a max contract. He is a good player but not what is needed in new York.

Allan Houston must be somewhere smiling at this deal.

Most overrated player in the game today.
