LeBron James’ Decision to Be Televised Thursday Night

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

LeBron became the king of all media yesterday, as he launched a new website, signed up for Twitter, and concluded matters by getting into the TV business.

James will reportedly announce his highly anticipated free agent destination tomorrow night at 9PM ET, during a television special on ESPN. For some reason, this will take an hour.

ESPN, um, reports (through independent sources, but with confirmation from ESPN. Or something):

ESPN would only confirm that active discussions for the special are ongoing. But sources tell Broussard that representatives for James contacted the network, proposing that James makes his announcement during a 9 p.m. ET special.

Those sources said that James’ representatives requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the one-hour special, with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and that ESPN agreed to the proposal but had not been told what James has decided.

James’ plans still are a closely guarded secret. He visited with six teams — the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls — last week at his business offices in downtown Cleveland and may have made up his mind already. But until he gives word, other teams are positioning themselves to make a run at the 6-foot-8, 260-pound All-Star — or Bosh or Wade, or maybe a combination.

Now, I’m not sure how James and ESPN are going to fill an entire hour’s worth of television programming time to announce LeBron’s decision, but they will undoubtedly come up with something that everyone will find a way to hate.

So, good times ahead!

Myles: So not Cleveland and not Miami. Then, who? I was leaning Chicago w Bosh or Boozer but now I’m thinking Miami.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

I dunno. I just don’t think three max guys and nine minimum salary guys can win it all. Too dicey. If Bron can bring Boozer with him to Chicago or NJ or sign with the Knicks and see what they can do with $12 mil in cap space once they dump Eddy Curry, those teams could be just as good. Deeper and more balanced.

Does Philosopher work for Slam??!! No matter how many derogatory statements i make about him they never get shown. btw Philosopher your a gay.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    LeBron/Amar’e > Wade/Bosh

    Heat vs. Knicks on XMAS

    Book it.

  • cp3fan

This is ridiculous. Wonder if it will be on ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN too. Somewhere, Kobe is polishing his five rings and making room for a few more while all of this is going on. Regardless of any team he goes to, they won’t be better than the Lakers.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I don’t know what he can say for an entire hour but I actually like the way he’s doing it. He’s kept a low profile for the last month but the media has made hime the #1 topic in sports during that time. So from his perspective why not do it his way? He can control how the message is delivered and what happens around it while doing some good for a charity – I don’t see anything wrong with that. Other athletes call for press conferneces or get on twitter (which I think is an unprofessional way to announce your decision). Basically the way I see this, he’s having a formal press conference to answer all the questions that he knows the media et. al. will ask and he’s making some money for the boys club in the process. In my opinion this is exactly how to use celebrity status to the fullest and make an impact. Seems like so many people are giving him hate for this, but as a sports fan I think this is a great, and professional way to take the typical press conference one step further. I’m glad he has the depth to see his position and found a way to really take advantage. In a few years, we’ll see other elite athletes do similar things.

  • T-Money

Seriously, it’s pretty much over for the rest of the league if he goes to MIA. Not sure he WANTS to do it but if he does, oh my. ESPN is reporting the three amigos had a conference call this morning.

  • ai come back

ALL THIS IS BULLSH*T everybodys tlkin about lebron down to bulls and cleveland and its on nba.com no doubt bosh is gonna be a centerpiece w/e…………nothin should be said till all is done btw philosopher and eboy yall are my online heroes.lol

  • T-Money

The Nupe has a point: we’ve been forcefed LeBron news since the end of the playoffs but what has LeBron said since he got eliminated besides the LK interview? Nada. He didn’t go on tours, didn’t talk to the press and kept his meetings low-profile in a building in freaking Akron. Guys like Wojo keep writing every day that they’re tired of LeBron being discussed all the time. Am I the only one seeing the irony in this?

  • Izzo

I think he’s doing a half hour stand up set.

  • The D Train

James, Noah and Rose > Wade, Bosh, Beasley? Not saying it’s going to happen, because personally I think Reinsdorf must have turned off Lebron at the Bulls meeting (how else to explain the reported Bulls front-running until after the meeting, when they apparently fell off the face of Planet Lebron). But IF Lebron did sign with the Bulls, and brought along Boozer, aren’t those 4 dudes a better foundation than Miami? Hell, one could argue that Lebron, Amare, Gallinari is better than Wade, Bosh, Beasley. Even though the new hotness that is Flash and Centerpiece is fresh to death, Lebron still holds the ultimate key.

  • http://www.facebook.com/clayton.holloway Mavus

Out of all the teams going after Lebron, Cleveland hasn’t made a move.. Who’s he going to play with there? If he goes back, he doesn’t win a championship..

  • unrel

when MJ returned.. didn’t he just fax ESPN with the words “I’m Back”.. and called it a day.. if he’s the type of dude that Philosopher says he is.. clout and all that other deep throat phrases he used.. you don’t need all this.. it’s like the little dude with the SUV.. might be compensating for having no rings..

how can anyone NOT see that the philosopher is acting?

  • The Philosopher

To the Gentiles whom express disdain towards me:
    I’ll tell the truth.
As I’ve stated on a many a occasion, the truth is very distressing AND difficult for a many people to grasp, understand and accept.
But, I’m here to state the truth to the masses, and to attempt to help people understand what IS truth.
My people, you are not alone in your disdain for truth. You are not alone in the way the truth makes one spew malice.
    Anyways, LONG… LIVE… THE KING!!!

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@co-sign T-Money. If you’re sick of the LBJ coverage, stop going to outlets reporting it. Even if its all over ESPN or whatever sports-related website you frequent, you’re welcome to change the channel, click a different link, or….get out of the house

  • The Philosopher

    To further illustrate:
When Kings are kings, they essentially have the authority to do whatever one wants, however one wants.
Many kings were feared, hated, disputed, etc. But they all yielded power, influence. Some were even loved and respected.
Hence LeBron. It is no longer deniable OR disputable. This young king’s rule IS present upon… us.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

I kind of want him to stay but I’d bet on him leaving. I think he enjoys the rivalry with Wade more than playing with him in the NBA, so Miami’s out. Chicago, if he wants to win now. Nyets, if he’ll be patient. NY, if he wants to let Dwight rule the East. I’ve got 7 on Chicago.

  • Scottie Pimpin

come to chicago lebron, and help us kick Wade’s loyal std having ass up and down the court.

  • http://music.entelleckt.com entelleckt

Yo to The Nupe!!! He made really good points. What better way to harness the power of the media machine than to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club and control the message that goes out. Intelligent PR move all around.

Anyone hear that he’s going to retire on top and follow his dream and play baseball?

What an arrogant a-hole.I don’t remember MJ or Kobe or even SHAQ doing something like ths. Of course tons of LeBron jockers will tune in and watch intently for an hour when all they need is 10 seconds for him to say “I’m staying in Cleveland.”Or whatever else.

Hi from Akron. It’s been a fun few days out here, obviously, as discussed in my currently un-commented-upon post on this very site…
Just had a short conversation with one of the local beat writers who’s been on 24-hour LeBron watch here the past few days (and weeks, I guess…) I asked him how eager he is for this circus to be over. His reply, “I don’t think ‘circus’ even does it justice.” I imagine he’s right.
The other thing he said, echoed by the comments here and by what I’ve seen on Twitter, is how this process isn’t winning LeBron any fans. Regarding a guy who wants to be the global marketing king, It’s a great point. Casual fans are certainly paying much more attention to him than they ever have, and I guess if you’re looking at broader American/global culture, appealing to the ignorant masses is the way to go. But certainly, among actual basketball fans, it’s hard to imagine anyone liking him after this beyond fans of the team he ends up with.
It’s all pretty fascinating. Someone should write a book.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

@Jake: MJ, Kobe or Shaq never had this kind of clout or media attention to do this. This has been the most hyped FA season ever and LBJ is the center of it. He hasn’t been going out to the media, the media has been speculating on him for the last month. I don’t see how his having a press confernece or whatever you want to call it is an arrogant move. Personally I hope he stays in cleveland. With all the talk and signings with Amare in NY and Bosh in Mia, one fact remains true – the current Cavs roster (with LeBron) is a 60+ win team and nobody has yet to make any moves (Bos, Mia, Chi, Orl, NY, NJ, Atl etc.) that make them clear favorites over the current Cavs. IF LeBron stays the Cavs are still a force in the East and if they could possibly sign a Boozer or Lee or another key player, they may be considered the favorites. There are no guarantees in basketball and in my opinion LBJ to Chicago gives him the best chance at a ring, but if the Cavs ownership can get some other peice – either in free agency or before the trade deadline during next season, it could be a really fun and ballanced east.

  • Ed

Clippers! Ha that would be epic.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@Jake, “People who wonder how Kobe Bryant would have handled this have short memories. He strung everyone along before his opt-out summer of 2004, just as LeBron did. He had the Bulls, Knicks and Clippers come meet him, just as LeBron had teams meet him. (Although at least Kobe’s pursuers got to go to Newport Beach instead of Cleveland). Two years later, Kobe changed his number, just as LeBron will next year. So it’s a mistake to say Kobe wouldn’t have done it the way LeBron did it. He has. He also went on radio to demand a trade, then appeared on another show to retreat from that position, then charged forward again in a different radio appearance. That was followed by the secretly taped parking-lot conversation in which he took swipes at teammate Andrew Bynum and Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak. Kobe didn’t use technology; technology used him”

Here you idiots go with the Kobe hating…

  • Alex Esquilin

Last night I had a dream about Chris Mills. When I woke up I wondered WHY CHRIS MILLS? Then I realized Chris Mills originally played for Cleveland and then went to New York. Maybe LeBron will do the same. Strange

JARED DUDLEY’S breaking news via twitter: LeBron to NEW YORK

  • Jake

He was also in a totally different situation than LeBron.Shaq was already showing signs of decline, and Kobe was starting to enter his peak so obviously he had to wait until he saw what management was going to do before he resigned. Also when he demanded a trade it was because the Lakers front office had surrounded him with the same kind of garbage that Toronto has given Chris Bosh for the past 7 years. When an organization such as the Lakers submits to mediocrity, they deserve a kick in the ass by their star player.MJ would have done the same thing. At least the Bulls made strides towards getting better.

Now back to LeBron. He’s consistently proven that he’s arrogant since he came into the league. He routinely launches 25 foot jump shots(and misses quite a few) on the break,he embraces himself as the king of the NBA even though he has no hardware yet(something that defines you if you are supposedly the best), and he schedules 1 hour ESPN specials dedicated to where he is going to sign.If he signs with Miami and they win a ring, that will further prove that he isn’t the true King because he needed 2 other future hall of famers to carry him.The “King” got swept by the Spurs in the Finals, and bowed out in the second round this year.

You tell me who’s more deserving of media coverage and the title of King…Kobe or LeBron?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Start spreadin’ the news…LeBron’s a Knickerbocker. Oh yeah.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@Jake, I can see why you’d be tired of the media coverage and, as a LeBron fan, I’ll even admit its overblown. However, what has he said publicly since getting bounced in the by Boston? I didn’t fault Kobe when he was flanked by Kwame and Smush and I was extremely disappointed in LBJ’s Game 5 effort. You wanna bring up ill-advised shots in a conversation that involves someone who routinely takes (and misses quite a few)? contested, 20-foot fadeaways. C’mon, man. You’re hating the player instead of the game.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

lebron will be a clipper. best team he can join now that bosh is in miami and can’t join with him to the bulls. he will have hollywood, and win! battle of LA. what more can you ask for? just make sure to redesign the logo and team name so it will actually look cool!

  • Kap

@LA Huey…there is no longer an argument about Kobe vs. Lebron. The was settled a few weeks ago when Kobe got #5…so he can take all the bad shots he wants and say what he wants bc he backs it all up with wins and hardware.

  • JTaylor21

Man, f*ck kobe and his over-sensitive lovers always
complaing about anything lebron does. the man is
doing it for the charity that helped him out when he
was a kid and you clowns are crying that u hate him
even more. Mayble you like hitler for all the good
things he did huh. Kobe gets no attention because he
doesn’t carry the same presence as bron does let alone
MJ. Do you think if MJ was still playing in his prime
that lebron would get as much attention as he’s getting
now, NO. Kobe doesn’t posses the presence that some of
the greats have because his been carried to more chips
than anyother star in league history and his never ever
been the definite best player in the league at a
give time. Shaq carried him to 3 chips, i don’t care that
kobe avg this and that, when someone avgs. 34ppg/14rpg
on 3 championship teams, trust his doing the most heavy
lifting, then in a cruucial gm7 his entire team carried
him, so thats 4 chips that he wasn’t the main factor for.
MJ was never carried like that neither was Magic, Russel,
Isiah, Bird even with 4 HOF teammates, etc. Also when kobe
came to the league MJ was still there, so he wasn’t the best
player, after MJ, shaq/TD were the best players, then Tmac
was thought by quite a few people to be better than kobe,
then bron/wade in their 3rd yr were just as good if not
better than him. He’s never been considered the clear cut
best player in the L. So stop complaing about any and every
thing bron does, if don’t like it change the channel or
do me a favor and swallow your kitchen untensils.

  • J-Bird

LeBron/Amare vs Wade/Bosh would be very entertaining,
but I have a hard time picturing LeBron being coached
    by D’Antoni.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

I heard he has pre-taped his decision on going to NYC and will let that run “live” on ESPN and everyone in Cleveland will watch and as soon as he says he is leaving, people will be looking to f*ck him up but he bought himself enough time with that pretaped message to pack up his sh!t and leave town.
I saw a similar approach in the movie SPEED.

  • The D Train

Sorry, Kap. Kobe v Lebron wasnt settled a few weeks ago. Kobe won three rings with Shaq at his apex. Kobe won two with Kung Pau. Let’s see Lebron play with a sidekick that is close-to, or better, than either of those guys and see what he can do. Kobe v Lebron will not be settled until after all the rings and stats are totaled up. Can’t put one dude on an island of crap and compare him to an island featuring an All-Star, top 5, big man. Not even remotely a fair, or valid comparison.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

    ^^ No Jtaylor, F*ck you.

  • jumpman3244

I love how people count out Cleveland because the roster isn’t good enough to win a title. No one said that back in April. Everyone seems to forget that when push came to shove against Boston, LBJ didn’t show up. Sure there were other factors but plain amd simple ‘the best player in the world’ got outplayed and outwilled. Funny how no one ever mentions that when discussing Cleveland’s short coming or the fact that he signed off on acquiring all of those pieces and hamstrung the organization in not being able to build for the future because of his lack of commitment.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    lol @ Anton

  • B-More Mike

So shaq wouldve won rings without Kobe? I’m done with this stuff!!! You people can’t know the game & what it takes 2 climb the championship mountain! If you did when was the last time an individual won it on his own. Remember “win a ring 4 the king” y’all was talking so much $hit it couldve became physical. Remember the season sweep, I think there fans thought it was the chip! I guess D Wade didn’t carry shaq 2 one huh? It’s all good you guys gotta keep your mind off the Lakers winning chips & still improving. STFU!!!!!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    B-More
Dumb statement. Kobe played his heart out the last two finals, he shoots bad game 7 and now he didn’t win title. (Look at MJ shooting stats, teammates/role players help win titles too) Before game 7, Kobe was going to win MVP, even if his team had lost game 6 cat. Also please don’t become a Shaq did it all cat, because Kobe took over plenty of games during his tenure with Shaq. People only remember Shaq playing against the small East centers and killing them. People forget Tim Duncan owned Shaq and Valde Divac used to always get Shaq in foul trouble. During those Finals Shaq had the CLEAR advantage to do whatever, against Davis boys, Mutumbo, Todd McCloough. Cat you forget Kobe was the lynch-pin to get LA past Spurs, Blazers and Sacrmento to get to NBA Finals, when they found ways to neutralize Shaq. Horry hit shots to get Lakers to finals. So Shaq doesn’t deserve his. GO check the stats for Kobe during those playoff runs and finals and tell me he did not earn them. Without Kobe LA doesn’t make it to Finals last two years. Kobe got off against a good Nuggets team last year to get to Finals and Kobe got off against a good Suns team to get to Finals. Hater go drink some more of that Lebron juice going around, where he is a King for you dumb puppets. So Kobe had nothing to do with the 5 rings. B-Moore the world is alot dumber, because of you.
