Orlando Magic Keeping J.J. Redick

The Magic aren’t losing J.J. to Chicago, as they matched the Bulls’ offer for the sharp-shooter. Reports the Sentinel: “The Orlando Magic will keep J.J. Redick around to make more 3-pointers. Those close to the negotiations told the Sentinel on Thursday that the Magic will match the 3-year, $19-million offer sheet presented to Redick by the Chicago Bulls. The Magic have scheduled a news conference today at RDV Sportsplex to make the announcement. The Magic had indicated ever since the Bulls presented the offer to the restricted free-agent shooting guard that they would likely match. It is believed that Redick received the offer from Chicago last Friday, meaning Orlando had a week to decide whether they would retain him. General Manager Otis Smith had said the franchise needed time to evaluate the luxury-tax implications of Redick’s new contract and other deals that might impact the decision. The Bulls’ contract offer was front-loaded with a first-year salary of roughly $7.5 to $8 million, meaning a tax-hit to the Magic of about $14 million.”

A tad bit over his value but the Magic needed to match

This fits Orlando’s M.O. perfectly. They weill match any offer sheet and con their way into getting players. They matched Gortat’s offer from the Mavs last year and now they over pay a bench player. Now they have matched Redick’s offer. Soon, no team will want to have any dealings with the Magic.

@LDR4…Because they wanted to keep a player they really liked no one will do business with them???

It’s still remarkable to me that there was any sort of “bidding war” for J.J. Redick’s “talents”.

  • LA Huey

@Eboy, agreed. Outside of JJ and his close relatives, who would have predicted this as recent as two years ago? He’s molded himself into very good help off the bench.

I wonder how VC’s gonna play next year. I have a feeling that the older he gets, the more he’ll suck or at least slow down. In other words: expect big minutes from JJ next year. Btw, am I the only one who thinks that the Magic have a good chance of winning the east next year? It would be remarkable if Boston can do this again next season. I still feel the Celtics are a one hit wonder who happen to surprise everyone with one other hit.

First Gortat, now Redick. I guess the Magic will love you so much they can’t see to let you go.

this will come back to bite them in the a$$ eventually. they already have big contracts with TONS of years left on their payroll of players they are overpaying(Vince, Gortat, Lewis, Nelson). I guess why not add one more right??

  • DreJayAre

Why do they spend so much for backups. Aren’t Gorat, Bass and now Redick like the highest paid backups out there?

I was so pi$$ed when I read about this last night. The Bulls almost had not one but two elite three-point shooters (which would be awesome for a team that was TERRIBLE at 3′s last year) and then this happens. Hopefully we get Ronnie Brewer now. Terrible three-point shooter but great size, athleticism and good defender. And at least he’s unrestricted. SMH.

  • ConeyIslander

GOOD! Him and Kyle Korver would have rained death on people with D-Rose driving and kicking. smh

enigmatic, why didn’t the bulls go for morrow?

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Whats adam morrison doing? Negotiating max deal with lal?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

They would have been really dumb not to keep him, now if they could somehow trade Vince..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@davidR – Man, GarPax slept on Morrow HARD. Nets snatched him up real quick. I would’ve liked to see Morrow in a Bulls uni too.

  • skywalker

orlando gives bench players big money

  • chingy

    Adam Morrison!?

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

sucks to hear. being a warrior fan, and a supporter of morrow, it sucks to know he’s as good as gone. but, i would’ve been happy for him to go to chicago where he would most likely play a key role during the playoffs. weird though, cause he’s arguably a better shooter than jj, and comes cheaper.

The Magic can trade Gortat and Brandon Bass anytime the want. There are plenty of teams that would love those guys, just like Reddick. Rashard Lewis is the only cat they probably could not trade.

  • LA Huey

@davidR, yep. It’s a bummer he got away.
@Allenp, what about Vince? Isn’t he just as tough to trade?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah, Rashard’s contract is worse, particularly since he’s come up small in the playoffs so often. People will still be intrigued by possiblity of what Vince can do, even as the reality stares them in the face.
Shard doesn’t have that whiff of potential anymore and he’s getting paid max money.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

lots of bitter Bulls fans out here, your only choice would´ve been overpaying like Portland did with WesMatthews. what you do if youre Ottis Smith, rely on Vinsanity? lol, thats just crazy talk..

The reason the magic match the offer sheets for gortat and now reddick, is because as an organization they spend 3-4 years developing these players into solid NBA role players, and why would they spend all that time developing them just to see them go to another team as they begin to hit their strides

  • D12FSU

also @Allenp….did you not watch the cavs series at all in 2009?!?! Rashard earned his money that series

  • Ronald

What the Magic is doing is similar to what supposedly Daryl Morey and the Rockets do. Match offer sheets on RFA and let other teams make the first offer so they do not get into bidding wars and ensure they do not lose something for nothing.

    Trade gortat, bass

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Im not sure why people expected shard to do so much in this years playoffs. Dwight, jameer, vince, barnes, pietrus were all lookn to shoot alot. In 09 orl didnt have as many shot happy players and the offense flowed better, and shard plays within the offense, hes never been a guy to go out, break plays and just throw up shots cuz he hasnt had one in two mins.
