Stan Van Gundy Not Watching ‘The Decision’

Because he is awesome, SVG will be one of the few people who care about the NBA that won’t be tuning into the LeBron show tonight. Reports the Orlando Sentinel: “It takes 15 seconds to say, ‘I’ve decided to stay in Cleveland,’ but we’ve got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what? Promote LeBron James? As if we don’t do that enough … It’s gotten ridiculous I think. It’s really I mean it’s almost like a parody of itself this whole situation now. Come on, an hour long? It takes 15 seconds to say I’ve decided to stay in Cleveland but we’ve got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what? Promote LeBron James? As if we don’t do that enough. Look, the guy’s a great player and wherever he goes, my bet would be Cleveland, that place will be excited. But an hour long special? It is a sign of the times. Unfortunately. It’s amazing that a guy as good as Kobe Bryant simply extended his contract with no real fanfare or anything else … Yeah and Kevin Durant is more in the Kobe Bryant mode. You don’t hear Kobe Bryant and certainly not Kevin Durant talking about their brand. They don’t. I hear that from the other guys. I don’t hear those guys talking about their brand, they’re simply basketball players who want to be great players and win games. Not that those other guys aren’t great players and don’t want to win games. They do, but there’s also more to it. It’s not what I like. Other people, I guess, like it. I’m sure it will be a widely watched show tomorrow. It simply will not have me as a member of that audience.”

  • oinestep

Keep it real…….all this hoop la is unecessary……but I’ll be watching

  • http://slamonline.com Anjoe Intal

I definitely agree with SVG. I mean, why is lebron still doing these things? He can just say his decision quickly and….. done. Why would he need an hour to do that?

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Of course he wont watch the show, in the same time slot is a show detailing how to horribly mismanage a good bench. It’s one of his favorite shows.

  • MB

Stan is right but for some reason I still want to watch it.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

love the way Stan speaks his mind. one good thing about the LeBron show, though: all money from advertising is going to children’s charities, so it’s tough to really hate.

  • http://albayanos.com LeoneL

Does that mean I’m awesome too because I won’t watch it?

  • CP

F*ck SVG & THe rest of the HAters. It’s about MONEY,Your damn right It’s about a Brand Stan,Much like The Brand YOU work for, witch dose every & anything to promote/protect there BRAND(Merchandising,TV rights,ECT)The NBA made a killing of the backs of magic & Bird & kareem & those guys and never paid them half of what they were worth. So go head LBJ if some one wants to give a hour to promote your self and your BRAND,Do the damn thing.

SVG is a liar and a thief!

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

yup, again Lebron just wants to get paid/seen/talked about. What an effin joke of a “basketball player”. Used to be a fan since he was a rook, but not anymore. Clown.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

And yeah of course the charity thing is great, but shouldn’t he just auction off I dunno his 2010 ECF game 5 jockstrap for money to charity or something? To me this all looks like, hype lebron some more, oh and lets give the earnings to kids so we don’t come off as dbags. It’s like a freakin afterthought that’s it’s almost negligible. F’n clown.

  • bill breedley

Lebron is an attention whore. Paris Hilton of the basketball world. Not watching this lame event. Sorry bron rest of world outside Cleveland just does not care where you go

  • http://www.runninglikwidworks.com Mr. RLW

If its one thing SVG is good for, its a soundbite.

And he couldn’t be more right about this Lebron-a-thon. If I was a LBJ fan, which I’m not (but I’m definitely no hater), or a Heat-Cavs-Knicks-Bulls fan (which I’m not)… I STILL wouldn’t want to watch this bs.

This sh!t is way passed dumb.

Stan Van Gundy is only upset because his Magic can’t do anything besides sign Chris Duhon as their Point Guard. Another reason why he’s upset is because he knows that if LeBron stays in Cleveland then the Cav’s, Celtics, and now Miami can beat the Magic in the Playoffs.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

You don’t hear of Kobe Bryant’s name because you know he’s not going anywhere. Heard a lot about Kobe bryant with a nurse though and when he demanded a cried and demanded a trade just because Laker’s couldn’t get past the 1st round when he was carrying them on his own… I’m a Kobe fan too.

Got to remember guys LeBron causing this much hysteria in the game actually makes the game more popular. Why? Because people that don’t know anything about basketball or don’t watch the game will want to know who LeBron James is and why he causes this much interest.

  • Klemperer

    He’s Dwight’s coach.

  • dsleepy

Eduardo, kobe could be going to pluto and he still would not hold an hour long special for this bs. svg is right. this is becoming more about a show, and not about the sport. i dont like where this is headed and i hope it doesnt set a precedent. lebron cares more about his image and his brand than about just WINNING. truth. you could neve say that about jordan, bill russell, kareem, magic, bird, kobe…kevin durant even. lebron is a joke.

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

I really like those Van Gundy boys. They say what they feel and be damned if you don’t like it.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

RE: dsleepy, it’s probably the best thing for the game though to grow. It’s different if you know the game, you play it etc. I’m from Australia and because NBA, or basketball even isn’t that popular here. People that don’t know basketball here or have no interest in it what so ever ask me who that guy LeBron is? I send them a YouTube link or tell them and they now love basketball, which in turn creates creates a ripple effect to like other players and the game.

Yes it is a bit too much but by LeBron building his brand he also helps build the NBA more. Yao did the same thing for Basketball in China, look at how popular basketball became when he was drafted.

Co-sign Cheryl. Hope you guys caught what he said about Bosh.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

For LeBron to be regarded as the best though he has to beat the best not Join them. Jordan had to pass, Drexler, Barkley, Bird, Magic, Malone, Hakeem to win his titles, he didn’t join them, which defied his greatness.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I don’t get it. Dude is essentially holding a press conference to announce his decision, what’s wrong with that? The media has been following him around for the last month (when he’s been pretty low key), so he decides to make a formal announcement instead of using twitter. I’m good with that. If he did announce it on twitter media etc. would still ask questions like how did you decide, what were the big factors, why not here/there. So he decides to take all the questions at once so that he can put this decision behind him and just focus on basketball. His approach just makes since to me. Now, will I watch this ‘show’? No I won’t. Why? Because I’m not a big fan of his and I’ll catch up on all the details and reactions to it on ESPN or sites like this one.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Stan Van Gundy is just jealous that LeBron can talk like a normal person in a press conference and to his team mates without YELLING every single time.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

This was awesome. Stan is awesome. Both Van Gundys are awesome.

  • jin35

    ‘Stan don’t lie’

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@Nupe, co-sign most of that. With how every seems to want to know his every move, a live press conference looks like the best call to me. The fact that his free agency has become this much of a spectacle is just a product of society.

stan van grumpy secretly has a man crush on LBJ..

  • SWardBallin

Good lord. It’s pretty ridiculous that every single Lebron-related story gets haters, fans, and people who have “insider info”. I can’t wait till he retires and basketball can be about basketball again.

  • realtalkLA

thank you STAN VAN GUNDY…………..at least somebody KEEPING IT REAL

  • Bigg Regg

why not do it. Get as much money as u can

  • bezzy
