The King of Contradiction

LeBron has decided but questions remain.

by Adam Sweeney

The inmates have officially taken over the asylum and we handed them the keys.

Thursday night, LeBron James, a player whose talent level and hype seems to know no limits, took the term heartbreaker to a new level by making the announcement that he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to head to South Beach with the Miami Heat in a television special. With that decision comes hyperbole to no end, as ESPN has already stated the trio of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh is one of the great trios of all time before they even played as a team in an NBA game together. But if James has become an addict of celebrity, and it certainly appears that way, then we are the ultimate enablers. This isn’t a LeBron James hate article. If anything, we put the needle in his hand.

LeBron JamesAnyone who needs proof that America can’t get enough of the summer LeBron-athon needs to look at the SLAMonline website. The top four features all involved LeBron James. No, the irony of this article in itself is not lost on me. I feed the beast just as much as the next fan. It’s a matter of supply and demand when it comes to sports coverage. We recognize what you want to see and then slam it down your throat until you pick another flavor. Now swallow your poison.

There is nothing wrong with LeBron James choosing to go for a ring. It’s common knowledge that you can’t win a title without two to three exceptional players. Jordan had Pippen. Kareem had Magic. Kobe had Shaq and Gasol. Now LeBron has his co-pilots. The black eye to James comes in how he conducted the entire process, right up to the ultimate “Decision.”

If LeBron wants to add another sponsor in his quest for world domination, maybe Gold Bond Medicated Powder would be happy to throw themselves at his feet. It is really the only practical choice, seeing as the poor guy must be chafing from how many teams and fans rode his jock so hard, as if James needs more money. The “selflessness” of James when it comes to taking less money is laughable. He still stands to make over $80-100 million in this contract if he wants. The big money comes from endorsements. Don’t forget that James, Bosh and Wade are all Nike guys. The real winners in this choice may be Phil Knight, CEO of Nike, and the Swoosh symbol. Let’s also not forget about the Don, Pat Riley, who pulled a great sell job to make this happen.

The Cleveland Cavaliers shouldn’t blame themselves. They did everything they could to help James get a championship. The sad truth is that you are who you are. Cleveland just isn’t a top-tier city or franchise. James was not selfless or naïve enough to think he could win a championship on his own. Had Chris Bosh wanted to play in C-Town there is no doubt James would have stayed. That wasn’t happening and so James was left with little choice but to leave. Cleveland lost their high school sweetheart and now gets to look at the love letters and highlight videos of the “LeBron years” in the aftermath. You can always break out the Mark Price and Shawn Kemp jerseys, Ohio. Cough. And please don’t feel bad for the New York Knicks or any team besides Cleveland that lost in the LeBron sweepstakes. They cut off their nose to spite their face. The results are to be expected. They are now a bloody and ugly mess.

Still, there is contradiction in The Chosen One’s pick. James stated that a team isn’t built around just three guys but his decision screams otherwise. Yes, Wade and Bosh are two of the 20 best players in the game but what else does Miami have? The best choice in terms of depth was Chicago, especially once they grabbed Carlos Boozer. Somebody strike while the iron is hot and print a picture of the aforementioned trio that says “Friends first” or “Miami Thrice.” (Props to my friend Nick for the latter nickname.) This is what James is saying with his pick. Going to Miami says that he thinks superstar egos can co-exist and winning matters but don’t say that he chose the best team scenario. It simply isn’t true.

It would be foolish to crown James a champion, though haven’t we all been doing that since he was a high school phenom? Expectations don’t always equate to reality. The Heat still have to fill their roster out around the new “Big Three.” Don’t forget about the Steve Kerrs, Michael Coopers and Robert Horrys of the world. Mike Miller, who now looks ready to come along, gives them a much needed shooter. Can Pat Riley lure other veterans in to the fray? The kneejerk answer is a definitive yes. But don’t underestimate the egos of NBA players. How many true impact players want to sit on the bench and play ten minutes at best a night? We will see.

What made James’ situation novel was the polarity involved. The most unique physical specimen in basketball came from the trenches of Ohio to carry the hopes and hearts of the most jaded sports city in America. We haven’t seen a hometown boy more hyped up since Anakin Skywalker rolled out of Tatooine in Star Wars. Now it’s James who has seemingly turned to the dark side.

The made-for-TV special could not have been any more audacious if they had carried James in to the room on a throne. Was it really necessary to title a press conference concerning an athlete’s deliberation over free agency “The Decision?” Harry S. Truman deliberating over dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima is a decision. This circus show should have been called “Just tell us already!”

James had to be aware of what he was doing to Cleveland by making his decision in to a spectacle. Offering up the show’s profits to the Boys & Girls Club smelled both of desperation and self-preservation. I kept waiting for LeBron to kiss a baby and say, “Don’t forget that I’m a good person, Cleveland.” The bleachers filled with children served as a false backdrop to a stage where James has now changed from hero to villain In the eyes of many. The Miami Heat have now become the Empire, an odd juxtaposition to the superpowers of teams with tradition like the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Any rebellious team who takes down King James and his roundball table will be respected.

The never-ending conversation of who is the greatest of all time also has turned itself on its head. James has shown that rings overcome loyalty, which shows that he is aware of his place in history. Kobe Bryant’s last two titles have seemed to erase the memories of hoop fans everywhere. Anyone who says Bryant wouldn’t have dragged this situation out forget his temper tantrums thrown on sports radio and his infamous statement about Andrew Bynum in a mall. It’s funny how winning changes history.

In King James’ quest to grasp the Holy Grail of public opinion, he has also lowered his respective ceiling in the G.O.A.T. conversation. James can’t win in this situation. Critics will say LeBron can’t win it by himself without superstars around him if he wins in Miami. “He had to acquiesce to Dwyane Wade to do it,” they will say. If he fails to get a title with the Heat, which is a real possibility, he will move ahead of players like Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone in terms of great players who couldn’t earn a ring. Is it an unfair paradox? Maybe, but LeBron has made his own bed by dragging teams along on a two-year courtship.

The true greats of the NBA stayed at home. Michael Jordan stuck in Chicago during the prime of his career. Magic Johnson did it. Paul Pierce is now a Boston hero because he held down the fort in the wake of despair. The consensus philosophy also lies in the fact that to be the best you beat the best. You don’t join them. James could have been a legend by staying in Cleveland or winning a title in New York because he would have done it alone. What this says about James’ legacy remains to be seen. Titles seem probable to come but the Association’s greatest? That’s a title that seems to be getting away from James.

LeBron James made the most fitting choice for who he has become now. He has brought a hurricane of controversy, urban legend and expectations to South Beach. Get ready, Miami. Change is coming. We have to wait and see if it will end with championship parties on the beach or a hangover even Mike Tyson couldn’t knock out. You know that we will be watching every overexposed step of the way.

i think lebron is the top player in the game all around. wade and kobe and tied at 2nd. 4th place and on it gets messy. but bosh has to be top 10. that’s top 2 + a top 10 player. can’t blame him for choosing that team. however the way he did it was not very classy. but it has been the same way he has dealt with other issues in the past. never blame himself, but when you’re lebron, it’s easy to have that feeling, since you’re “the king”. he’ll be a winner, but also a winner who took the easy route. most guys join forces when they get older. i guess you can say that he is smarter for doing it earlier. the heat will have a dynasty in a couple of years for sure.

    excellent post

“They are a bloody and ugly mess.” The Bulls aren’t in that bad of shape. They still have Rose, Boozer, Noah, Deng, and Gibson. Not THAT bad. Rose and Noah haven’t shown how great they can be yet.

And I don’t see how this bodes well for Nike. The Heat are the most hated team now, and the Miami market ISN’T that large. Lebron lost fans in the biggest markets (Chicago, New York).. and Kobe owns L.A. Most people in the country are hating Lebron right now, so… it hurts Nike in the long run.

People keep saying Jordan had Pippen, but they forget that it was JORDAN’s work ethic that inspired Pippen to become so great. Pippen has said that himself many times. Jordan made Pippen a better player. Period.

As a marketing guy, the actions of LRMR will go down as one of the worst in sports history. Lets see if Chris Paul stays on board. lol. The akwardness of the entire thing was amazing, especially the announcement of his donation (in which they made over 6 million, and 2.5 went to the boys and girls club). It was like he almost forgot about it.

    Crazy.

Michael Jordan would have wanted to kick Dwyane Wade’s butt every spring, not play with him. This should be mentioned every day for the rest of LeBron’s career. It’s also the kryptonite for any “Some day we’ll remember LeBron James as the best basketball player ever” argument. We will not. Jordan and Russell were the greatest players of all time. Neither of them would have made the choice that LeBron did last night. That should tell you something. – An excerpt from a great article by Bill Simmons

I’m just wondering who the “inmates” are?

  • diinKa?

it’s not always just what you say but it’s also how you say it. if bron bron didn’t made it into a media hypefest i’m sure the fans would have taken it much differently. maybe would’ve even had somthing nice to say about him but the way he carried on with the whole FA thing, the whole process culminating with “the descision” COME ON! nobody likes a tease. that being said LBJ is still an amazing player. it was great for his marketing and for publicity(initially), but i definitely agree with adam, his legacy will take a hit. great post

  • o no

THE MIAMI ILLUMINATI SHOULD BE THEIR REAL NAME. FOR REAL THO THIS IS SO LAME AND THE NBA IS IN TROUBLE IF THIS IS THE SIGN OF THINGS TO COME…

Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, Rajon Rondo, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Tim Duncan, Yao Ming, Dwight Howard, Brandon Roy, Kevin Garnett, LeMarcus Aldridge, Al Horford, Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash, Joe Johnson, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, and Andrew Bogut all can have arguments made as to why they are better than Chris Bosh. Some of those names are inarguable.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

It’s interesting – Bosh doesn’t actually bring a winning attitude to the Heat, so it will be interesting to see how he handles not being mentioned (or getting the ball the least of the three) so much. It’s Wade, followed by LeBron, followed by Bosh…

LBJ is done, no one will give a sh*t what kind of awards he wins from here on out. No one will give a sh*t about how many ‘ships he wins either, because they’ll all be D. Wade’s. People remember MJ has 6 rings, but no one really talks about Pippen do they?

  • http://yahoo Ddub

I agree with Zee, Mj,magic bird, would have rather die then join together.I THOUGHT THAT LEGONE JAMES WAS A TRUE COMPETITOR? Dont want to work for a ring, would rather coatail, and Bosh, I must be mistaken but isnt he the one that said I am not an addition?guess what Chris, you are not the center piece,no, you are a follower, why not go to houston where you could have stood taller w/yao,scared of competition.
LEGONE,ITS NOT LIKE YOUR TEAM WAS A LOSER, YOU QUIT ON THEM,THEY DIDNT QUIY ON YOU!!!THE CAV FANS DIDNT DESERVE THIS,IF YOU HAD A BEEF W/THE OWNER,OK,BUT TAKE CARE OF THE TICKET HOLDERS AND THE ONES WATHCING ON TV.YOU EARN THE RT TO BE FREE, BUT YOU KNEW AND SO DID THE OTHERS,WHERE YOU WANTEDD TO PLAY.LEAVE ALL THE FANS out of it,Now NY,CHI TOWN,AND CLEV,NJ, ALL THOSE FANS ARE MAD THAT YOU LED THEM ON,fRONT RUNNER JUST LIKE Pat RILEY,OH!DIDNT HE FAX A RESIGNATION TO NY,YES Lebron, at least your boss took a sorry way to quit, yes quit, just like you, easy way out.

its just the stupid tv show he did screams egotistical, Bosh Im from Toronto love the guy dont blame him for leaving since we were becoming NBA version of a Euro team. but I thought he would stay based on the I want to be the man not an addition talk, Lebron Vs Bosh reason for leaving is no where near close, bosh had nothing Bron had playoff team, Bron is 2nd fiddle and Bosh is just there. but still stacked team but D-Wade legacy will be great here on out and he will sell jordans for days cuz hes still the man

  • http://myspace.com/chrisbarrio79 C Money

You do things like this at the end of your career after you could’nt get it done and win a alone or as THE MAN(Barkley,Malone,Payton, the big 3)most retired empty handed. But thats on the decline of your career you dont do things like this in your prime.Though LBJ is a stat stuffer you can NEVER again mention him in the same breath a Kobe or Jordan EVER!! And its not about them teaming up, for me thats fine its more the fact he WENT TO MIAMI (Wades TEAM) not a neutral team or the CAVS but Miami. I have so much to say about this but I don’t and can NEVER live LBJs life so in end…. Its going to be a heck of a Ball season and a very “cheesey” XBOX360 NBA2K11 season..
    In closing…. FEAR THE DEER!!!!!

My favorite part of the aftermath of Lebron was when everyone asked Kevin McHale if Bird would EVER join Magic. Everyone was expecting McHale to say “oh hell no, Bird would never do that!”
Instead, McHale seemed genuinely dumbfounded, saying this like “well he loved playing against Magic but he also loved the idea of playing with Magic. I can’t really answer that, that’s a really tough one…” to which one of the angry sports analysts to sign off with “Bird definitely would not have though!”
Magic and Bird were sourounded by immense HOF talent the moment they stepped foot on the NBA. Magic always had THE BEST CENTER IN NBA HISTORY and ridiculous greats like Nixon and Cooper. Along the way he picked up other HOFers like James Worthy. Bird started with a cast of Maravich and Cowens, which morphed into McHale and DJ and Parish and Tiny f’ing Archibald. How the hell do we KNOW these guys would have stuck with their team when they were losing? Bird retired very early cause of his back. Magic retired very early cause of HIV. Do we know these cats wouldn’t have switched teams? Would they have played with each other on neutral territory when they were 34-35, just to see how it was played?
Really, this whole thing is Bird/Magic/Jordan’s fault… before them, no one gave a damn how many teams you switched.
Who were the top of the top…. Wilt CHamberlain forced owners to trade him constantly at his will, and it was over stupid things like “I don’t like the coach” or “I want to bone more white women.” No one EVER gave a damn he won championships in the cities he wasn’t originally in.
Dr. J was suppose to play for the Nets, and him + a healthy Archibald were going to wreck the league. Instead, Dr. J was angry he didn’t get the money he requested and was traded to Philadelphia. NO one gives Dr. J crap.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, widely considered a top 3-5 player, requested to be traded to LA when the Bucks started getting their butts kicked yearly cause the Big O had retired. He got that trade, and won five more totals on the coat tails of Magic Johnson. So why does no one give Kareem any crap?
Truth be told: if Lebron only gets rings playing with Bosh/Wade, his place in history is hurt. BUT if he earns three/four rings with his trio, then leaves and wins another one or two…. I guarentee history will forget all this nonsense and Lebron will go down as a top-10 caliber player of all time.
And Lebron was never going to be considered GOAT once he couldn’t average 32-8-8 his fourth year in the L. So knock that stuff off.

  • rich

I think this is actually pretty good, it would be hard to put ne of these guys in a goat convo now, but maybe its about being the best team for them? maybe this is the end of the dominant superstar that holds the ball, maybe we will seee some real basketball from the best players rather than the selfish 1 man shows in the past. I’d love to see that for once

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

I’m an LBJ fan and thought this article was a good read. Feeling really bad for the Cleveland fans. If they wall wanted less Chicago does sound like the right fit. All three could have been there at Wade’s home city even. At least Wade’s laughing he doesn’t need to go play at his former hometown 2 or 4 times a season. Heat vs Cav’s at the Cav’s home court will be more watched than and promoted now than the embarrassing 1hr display to humiliate your home town. The guy could have just Twittered “Miami” on the 1st of July and that would have been at least half forgivable by people in Cleveland.

  • Bassbesteck

i don’t get why everyone hates on lbj…

how bout some hate for wade, who also had no problem joining forces with the other two. shouldn’t he have said: well if you’re going to bring both of them in, as a competitor, i move away, cause i wanna beat the best, not play with them…

imho all the heat (get it?) is unnecessary. those 3 have a shot of winning it all, why not… if they are willing to draw back an play team basketball it’s even a move you can’t call egoistic…

  • http://Www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Cosign jukai!!! Have I ever said that before? Nobody in the history of the nba has won a title by themself, it takes great teammates, and superstars at that, the only team that won with just one superstar was hakeems rockets, but that is unique….. Kobe did damn near the same thing 3 years ago, he told lal to get him serious help or he wanted to be traded. …… And as for all this beat the best not join them stuff, the olympics is where this started, they learned that playing together they can win alot. Theyve been friends since 03. Very funny and ironic that what saved usa basketball is what caused this. I hope it works and they win 4 or more titles

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

@Bassbesteck: Wade deserves no hate – on the converse, his fans (and others) should love him even more now. Not only did he stay with his own team and his loyal fans, but he was able to lure two of the best to the Heat and deliver them to his happy fans.

interesting article…yes bron becomes a villian and we will see how he handles it. he was loved at the garden..now he is reggie miller and zeke combined..chorus of boos…kobe now gets the mj title back or the “golden boy” role as in his trips to the likes of msg he hears mvp chants! WE love da mamba!!! we will see how the miami trice plays out..either going to be really good or a train wreck!

  • Jacob (from Australia)

I’m so sick of this assumption that Chicago was the best place to be. Wasn’t Joakim Noah wanting to fight LeBron last year? Isn’t Boozer considered a selfish kinda guy (which is why he dogged Cleveland and deserted the 2nd best point guard in Utah)? They don’t even have a coach! Yes, Rose is sick but LeBron has played with Wade on the East and USA squads. Remember last year’s ASG? They completely tore it up. I see no problem with choosing Miami over Chicago. Especially when it comes to the fact that the Bulls are still Jordan”s team, no one will take that away. Miami is a whole new dynasty waiting to happen.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

@ Jukai; There was a natural flow to a lot of those past team’s moves you speak of. Many of those players came in through trade or draft as pieces to a greater puzzle. Also, many of those players weren’t necessarily in their prime when they formed a team. As Adam said in his write-up with the Star Wars reference, this is Miami thing us an “EMPIRE”; a Death Star, a fake planet fashioned to kill everything. If you’ve never played a sport then I understand, but You gotta understand that something great was lost when it comes to the spirit of competing. Great article. “Now LeBron has his co-pilots.” Ha Ha Ha, NO SIR. WADE now has co-pilots.
