The Pat Riley Coaching Rumors Have Begun

The NY Daily News isn’t wasting any time before stoking the fire that the coaching situation in Miami could soon change: “Miami Heat president Pat Riley is the undisputed winner in the great gold rush of 2010, walking off with the mother of all free-agent hauls in LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. So when does Riley come down from his executive suite at American Airlines Arena and return to his place on the bench? How ’bout the season-opener? While it looks like this is the perfect team and time for Riley to come back to coach, Wade made a pre-emptive strike against his return, saying on Wednesday that Erik Spoelstra will continue to coach the Heat. But league sources who are familiar with Riley’s thinking feel that Spoelstra will be on a short leash. ‘Pat won’t come back for just Wade and Bosh, because that’s not a sure thing in Pat’s mind,’ said one Eastern Conference coach. ‘But with LeBron and those two, that’s a sure thing for Pat. He will come back if they get LeBron.’ Not immediately and probably not until Spoelstra shows he can’t handle a team with so much star-power.”

Introducing Pat Riley, the biggest front-runner in the league.

I’m more inclined to think that Phil Jackson takes over next year. This team is what Phil loves more than anything, STAR POWER!

As soon as Erik loses one game, he’s gone.

    Spoelstra = Damocles

PAT RILEY WILL COME BACK EVENTUALLY AS SOON AS THIS STUPID TEAM LOSES IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR…

  • ConeyIslander

Let’s not be foolish and think Pat isn’t getting HIS players ready for mini camp right now! lol

which happens first: Pat Riley becoming coach of the heat or ESPN debuting the “ESPN: Miami” webpage?

  • LD

Doesn’t Erik have a family he needs to spend more time with?

  • Dirtybird

    ESPN Miami.com

Spoelstra simply wont be able to handle all of this…If Pat won’t become head coach you can guarantee he’ll have his hand deep into it

  • mj23

@ebay: Riley dislikes Phil Jackson too much. I think he’ll take over if the team struggles. Riley is an egomaniac, so he wants full control.

  • T-Money

I think Pat actually likes Spo. Not sure he’ll roam the sidelines. E: can Spo handle this? Is he panicky?

i can’t wait for Spoelstra to be the first NBA coach with a headset on the sidelines.

  • Craig “2 Black” Hodges

the only guy to come out looking good in all this is pat riley, after that whole free agency farce, bosh, lebron and wade look like cornballs. im not saying they shouldn have done it, im just saying they dragged this thing out for exposure, now thats corrrrrrrrrny.

    LOL @LD.

    Best comment of “Decisiongate”.

  • vtrobot

Phil would prefer a little bit more talent on that team before he’d be comfortable passing out books and burning sage in that locker room. Bring in D. Howard and CP3 and Phil will give a go.

Erik will have this team prepared and will figure out how to use the talent he has received. Wade will be responsible for managing the egos, I think. It’s his team and his approach will become the team’s approach. And don’t forget ‘Zo’s there in the background as well. what Riley will do now is bring in some “character” guys–vets willing to take the minimum. I could see Juwan Howard or Kurt Thomas here.

  • chingy

Erik will “voluntarily” step down from coaching and Pat will be “forced” to the bench. Book it.

Dam, Riley is the MAN! I’m just reading on the sun-sentinel that he’s working on a sign and trade with the Cavs for LBJ that will allow the Heat to be able to go over the “soft cap” and be able to sign Haslem, Wright, and Matt Barnes from Orlando, as well as Mike Miller. Now who’s the KING??? I think Pat just stole the moniker from James. Damn!

if the team isnt doing jack by all star game, then after the break pat steps in, could lebron handle a coach with an actual back bone though?

The Heat drop game one and Riley becomes the coach for game 2 of the reg. season.

  • JTaylor21

DMA with funniest comment i’ve heard in a while. Budlight joke of the day as Foxxhole says.

iverson 2 the heat u heard it hear first lol

  • WangChung

@Louisanimal: That’s a helluva idea. Imagine the option of subbing in AI while Wade takes a breather. Bet he comes cheap too.

  • http://slamonline.com louisianimal

yea if sumbdy can talk him into comin off the bench…he could finally get his ring 2

  • loqui

Rrrrraaatt… oh I think I smell a Rat! In all seriousness, I think he should do it. That way they just add more hate towards the Empire they’ve created. I’m sure all other NBA teams will play extra hard when the Heat are in town.

If he becomes coach, he needs to smash a chair over LeBron’s head on his first day to let everyone know who’s the boss.
