Tracy McGrady To The Bulls?

Marc Stein’s sources it could be close to a done deal: “The Bulls are prepared to sign Tracy McGrady if he proves to be sufficiently healthy in a workout Monday and can convince the team he is willing to accept a bench role, one source familiar with Chicago’s thinking said Sunday. ”Nothing is done until it’s done, but I expect the Bulls to sign McGrady later this week,” the source said. Another unknown is what kind of contract McGrady can command from the Bulls. But McGrady has said money and years are not priorities after earning nearly $23 million last season with Houston and New York… McGrady, 31, would be Chicago’s sixth acquisition this offseason, joining Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer, C.J. Watson and Kurt Thomas.”

Additionally, on Saturday McGrady was asked by a fan named Ralph about the chances of him signing with the Bulls. Tmac’s response?

Tracy McGrady.

If Chicago signs McGrady, are they legit contenders. If they don’t sign him, are they still legit?

First! The Bulls are gonna be a PROBLEM!

  • Burak

Yes T-mac, go to Bulls.. It doesnt matter you would be a bench player.. just go and play with all your force.. we trust you..

  • Hugo Loon

Imagine this happened whilst he was still in his prime. Just sayin.

  • Keith

  • Diesel

I don’t know how I feel about this. He’s not a good defender, slow, and unathletic after the surgery. Add to that his need to have the ball in his hands and his never having been a bench player and this could be a bad experiment. On the other hand if he does accept his bench role and somewhat resembles his old self, he shores up the bulls second string and gives them a legit scoring option.

  • Marco

he is irrelevant nowadays. and it’s sad, he was skilled almost like kobe

  • http://gmail dirty frank

I agree with Diesel. If he can accept a change in roles and stay healthy he can be a great bench/role player.

  • Scottie Pimpin’

    “dont call it a comeback!”

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

Guys, it clearly says in the article that one of the prerequisites are for McGrady to be willing to come off the bench. It even says that he was vying for a spot on the Heat’s bench. He might command the ball, but in a good way. He played point for most of his games with the Knicks, racked up assists and most of the time with minimal shot attempts. He’d be the perfect bench player for the Bulls, because he can back up three different positions, and still be the scorer when they need him to be. Depending on his health, I personally think he should start, but it’s a good fit either way.

  • rainman10

He could have an opportunity to start. He can possibly take the spot from Brewer, if I’m correct in my guess on who will start at the 2 for them. I think either one can be effective as a starter or off the bench. Like a QRich/Pietrus situation on the wing in orlando. Mac will still get 20-25 minutes a night regardless.

  • Diesel

He’s not going to start. Bulls are going to be a running team next year…TMac can’t run.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

    This is an irrelevant move.

  • Jonathan

I think T-Mac and VC are pretty much on the same level so T-Mac could contribute for the Bulls even if they bring him off the bench. Bulls could make Finals with this roster. But it probably won’t happen.

  • Scottie Pimpin’

a talented baller can still wreck havoc playing fundamental basketball at an older age. jordan did it, kobes doing it, and hill/nash are doing it. no reason why tracy cant. sign this bad boy up

  • Shifty

Bulls will be looking pretty good if they get McGrady, all he needs is a solid team without him having to worry about trade rumours, needs to be given a chance, minutes wise and i am sure he will produce. Boston fan through and through but will be watching the bulls very closely.

  • SpaceJam

The Bulls are going to kill this year. Atleast 55 wins, and thats a minimum. T-mac has been in about the same role in new york so it’s not much of a transition. James Johnson may be the odd man out though. Bulls All The Way!!!!!

  • jose

Well we will all know who’s fault this will be if The T-Mac experiment fails…. all due respect though, i hope t-mac does get back into his ole form or at least enough to where he can contribute again. It’s low risk high reward gettin him. Chicago is surely in that 1-4 seed range, possibly one of the top 3 in the east, depending on The C’s health and if decline finally starts to show

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

I can’t believe people think T-Mac is gonna come back and ‘kill it’ or be ‘his old self’. Seriously? Age – remember, he’s an old 31. All the injuries too. It mounts up.

  • badnews

Derrick Rose said he’s take T-mac @ 50% of what he was. What if he gets motivated and comes back 60- 70% of what he was. Could come off the bench or start… DRose been ballin’ this week!

  • total scrotal implosion

    Its all grant hills fault

  • pistol

@MichaelNZ – I too am an “old” 31…having chronic ankle and finger problems and a surgery on my knee, however, after slowly getting back to full strength over the last 2 years, I am now playing THE BEST ball I’ve played in my life. There is absolutely no reason why T-Mac can’t be back if he gives it 100% and he has no lingering problems. Can’t wait to see the Bulls take out the Heat in the East finals for the next 6 or 7 years!!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

    My T-Mac prediction (best case): 62 games played, 12.7ppg, 42.5fg%, 3.1 rebs, 3.7 asts in 23mpg.

Even if he hits, say, 60% of his career totals that doesn’t mean they have T-Mac at 60% of his old self. He’s much slower, less durable, athletic and explosive than when he was at his best. Please be real with your expectations.

  • robz

guys dont b like dat, arent u guys excited 2 see him play again?come on hs TMAC d only TMAC alot better dn KOBE/LEBRON? juz watch all hs vdeos man vs. doz 2 all star

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

T-Mac doesn’t look after his body like Grant Hill nor eat like Steve Nash, and he does injuries like Eddie Curry does Pizza Hut. He had always conveyed the notion to me that he didn’t need to train because his natural skill level was so high. It will be interesting to see what kind of T-Mac we get this year.

  • ab_40

he can be the george girvin to derrick rose his michael jordan. and funny how brewer signed with the bulls for a chance to be a starter and now he’s got his old buddy korver with him and they’re ready to sign tmac.. who’s the backup point? and who’s the fourth big? eastern confrense playoffs are gonna be a ball.. if all players are healthy. boston, orlando, bulls, heat, hawks maybe even the bucks. The west is still loaded with young talented teams on the rise like okc, portland, sacramento. and a few older but established teams like the spurs, jazz, mavericks and lakers. With a few question mark teams like the wolves and the suns. Can’t wait for october haha. I’m gonna have leauge pass this year. I’m done with downloading.

  • yoki

TMAC to the Bulls would be the last thing a Celtics fan like me would want. He would give the Bulls scoring whether starting or off the bench. Provided that he’s healthy, even for 20 minutes a game TMAC would light it up. And as shown in some of his games in New York, he is now willing to pass the ball which will probably make him more dangerous.

I would like to see TMAC playing for the Bulls, i’ll hate the fact that the Celtics will have a freaking hard time to beat this team though. Good luck TMAC.

  • 009

i think i’m smelling a contender for sixth man of the year ?

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

er ab_40, just where can you download games? :)

  • WangChung

@Dacre: No argument there, but T-Mac has supposedly been working out with Tim Grover during one of the offseasons. Hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come.

  • http://Slamonline.com Pippin Ain’t Easy

If willing, he’ll be a great bench player

  • http://Slamonline.com Pippin Ain’t Easy

he’ll be a great bench player, if willing

  • Overtime

Most people seem to be missing the point, the Bulls arent signing him to be old T-Mac, do you think they’re expecting 25+ppg? Of course not, they want T-Mac to come in, hit big shots, make some nice passes, be a mentor to the younger guys, be a reliable outside shooter and whatever else he can give. They dont want an all-star, they want a solid 2 to compliment Boozer while not taking away from Rose, i hope this move goes down

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

stop tripping guys I don’t care how ‘washed up’ you think the guy is I’ll take a T-Mac after an off-season of rehab over John Salmons any day! Bulls are looking a beast right now

  • oddball

Why the hell don’t the knicks wanna hold onto anyone from last year? He would be good to keep with this current knick team…

  • clockwork

Cool. Just about 10 years too late. Still like Tmac nonetheless.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

It’s not a bad move, Tracy needs to show he can stay healthy though, and he plays no D, but will giving them a nice scoring punch from the bench. But to say he may be more productive than Salmons was is ridiculous and I don’t care what anyone says, they are going to miss Hinrich alot…he was their best on the ball defender, and truth be told, bugged the sh*t out of D-Wade in every matchup, which would have been critical in any potential playoff matchup with the Heat. That’s truth.

  • slamfan4life

Eboy, brewer is just as good a defender except he can dunk on your ass

Great pickup for Chi, Tmacs back baby!

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

I think it’s good seeing tmac in chicago. A sixth man of the year. He can bring 16ppg 3.8rpg and 5apg.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I don’t think Brewer is as pesky as Hinrich…..just my opinion. I know Kobe ate Brewer for lunch in their last couple of playoff matchups, so I’m not sure where the idea that he is some kind of an elite defender came from. He’s athletic for sure, but he’s not a lockdown guy.

  • Barber Status Bucks

Ima big fan of T-Mac but don’t ever say Salmons is wack, watch a him be a all-star for us in upcoming years

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

I’m rootin for T-Mac all the way, was one of my favorite players when I was a kid. I’m gonna agree with Eboy on Hinrich. Brewer is a downgrade, not just on the defensive side of the ball, but Hinrich will kill you if you leave him open, I don’t think anybody is too worried when Brewer lines up a 3. If Mcgrady isn’t back to form, I still say he gets 15 a game and becomes a great 6th man, and if he does return to form, maybe you’ll see him take the starting job from Brewer and score 20-25 a game. It could happen. Don’t sleep on the guy.

I totally agree with Eboy about Hinrich. Good, solid defender, and could run at the one or two. Not the best outside shooter, but I’d say he’s a better spot-up option than Brewer (and frankly, it’s not even close). So yeah, a slight downgrade. And regarding possible defense against Wade IF the Bulls should match-up against the Heat: Brewer on Wade…big advantage, Wade. Deng on James…big advantage James. And holy sh1t when Korver comes in. Who in the holy hell would he guard? Yeah, Miami is going to pose just as many match-up problems with the Bulls as they will for 98% of the league.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Not sure how I would feel about T-Mac on my Bulls, but it could work to our advantage if he accepts his role. And I also have to agree with Eboy regarding Hinrich. I love Brewer’s size and athleticism and he’s a solid 2, but he can’t get up in that a$$ on defense like Hinrich could. I remember in the ’09 playoffs against the Celtics, Hinrich was our best defender against Pierce, despite Hinrich being all of 6’3″. I’ma miss dude.

  • The D Train

And if anyone wants to pipe up and say Noah would be defending the rim: with Wade and Lebron hurling their body into the lane, you can be assured that they will be fouling out cats left and right. If Stern-bot doesn’t step in with a league mandate to cut down on the superstar treatment (which he won’t, and I’m not complaining, at least as it pertains to Miami. not their fault they have two of the league’s darlings on the same team. Durant and Superstar X would foul out half the league, too) Miami will be averaging about 35 freebies a game. Last year James and Wade were 3rd and 4th in the league in FT attempts. When they’re not dunking on dudes heads, they’re gonna be shooting free-throws all night long. Good bye, Dwight. Good bye, Noah. You guys will be lucky to put in 25+ mins a game against Miami.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, Bulls against the Heat, Rose would have to absolutely dominate offensively for us to have a shot. LeBron and Dwyane would continue to do what they’ve done against the Bulls their entire careers, which is embarrass the hell out of us. But I honestly think Bosh could be bothered by our inside guys. Minus Boozer, all our 4′s and 5′s are defensive-minded, I think they’d give him a hard time. We have no chance of stopping both Wade AND LeBron on the same night, let alone just one of them, but I think we’d have a chance against the Heat.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Of course, if D Train is right, all our 4′s and 5′s would foul out the game and it wouldn’t matter anyways…lol

  • The D Train

Fresh out of his Bulls workout and McGrady says he wants to play in Chicago and would be willing to come off the bench, but prefers to start. I don’t think that is how you want your 12th man thinking. We haven’t even signed him and I’m totally out on the McGrady Era Bulls. Please, Gar, just get us a damn role-player. We don’t need to stack up names. All the hard work this summer, don’t let it go down the toilet by signing an of-injured, older than Methuselah shooting-guard with a questionable attitude.

  • The D Train

see ‘igmatic, the Bulls should have taken our advice and signed Shannon Brown to give the fans some serious Windy City Funk. Still frothing at the mouth thinking about him and Rose profusely dunking on cat’s heads. That would have been sweeter than a sh1t-dipped cherry.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Wow. Saying he prefers to start is a far cry from when he tweeted he’d be willing to play “whatever role they need me to play.” I would love dude as a 6th or 7th man IF he embraced that role. Not sure if I see that happening though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

I definately don’t see the guy coming off the bench, I figure he can take the starting job from Brewer because, in my opinion, TMac at 50 percent is better than Brewer, thats just me.

  • http://pardonthedopeness.blogspot.com DP

Either way they are going to be one of the best teams in the East and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. We all know TMac can still do “Tmac” esque type plays so as long as he stays healthy, he could bring some nice scoring and leadership to the team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

The Bulls are going to be insane next year, T-Mac will prove a lotta people wrong, he got his explosiveness back now and has healed his body since he left New York, he will eventually take the starting spot from Brewer average 18 ppg and be an all-star.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Man, I’m rooting for T-Mac here…he has always been one of my favs.

Man, people forget, but pre-Lebron there was a smattering of “whose better, Kobe or T-Mac” discussions going on. Of course, T-Mac never getting out of the first round kind of killed the argument before it even could really start, but he was straight sick-o nonetheless. I always though McGrady was Scottie Pippen v. 2.0. Unfortunately v. 2.0 included software that apparently included reoccurring injuries, a lack of defensive intensity even remotely approaching the original version, and a general disinterest in busting ones ass. So while the newer version may have looked more aesthetically pleasing at times, it fell fall, fall short of the original, unfortunately. Unfulfilled potential, thy name is Tracy McGrady.

Reinsdorf’s Revenge!! He’s yanking Tracy’s chain, then leaving him at the alter!

I’m tellin yall, I wouldn’t be shocked if he comes back healthy next year and owns some kids. D Train is right, in my opinion, McGrady in his prime was a slightly better player than Kobe, Maybe not defensively, but offensively, oh yes. No doubt in my mind. I think some GM’s are gonna be sick for passing on him. Wait and see.

If McGrady returns to his former self or at least 70% of what he was in his glory days, to average 20ppg or even 17ppg, we will be seeing Miami in the Eastern Conference finals. Boozer, Rose plus sorta old McGrady = ECF
