Xavier Henry Sits Out Summer League with Contract Dispute

by Ryne Nelson

Every season, it’s always something new with the Grizzlies. This time, the team couldn’t wait ’til training camp to pick its first fight.

Michael Heisley, the Grizzlies owner, and Arn Tellem, Xavier Henry’s agent, are in a contentious dispute over the terms of the first rounder’s rookie contract.

As a result, Henry is not playing on the Grizzlies summer league team.

Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal first shed light on the issue:

Grizzlies rookie Xavier Henry did not make his NBA summer league debut Monday night because of what appears to be a contract dispute with the team.

“We have not come to contractual terms with him so my understanding is that his agent (Arn Tellem) decided not to let him play in the summer league until a contract is signed,” Griz owner Michael Heisley said while sitting courtside for his team’s game against Atlanta in UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.

Here’s the nitty-gritty of rookie contracts: Teams can offer 80-120 percent of the standard rookie salary scale to first round picks. Most teams offer 120 percent. But, according to Tillery and others close to the situation, the Grizzlies allegedly offered 100 percent with the other 20 percent being incentive-based.

It’s amazing to think that Heisley can throw $84 million at Rudy Gay and is still haggling over a few thousand with Henry and fellow first round pick Greivis Vazques, who, on the other hand, played this week despite being unsigned.

While this seems like another unsightly move on the Grizzlies part, FanHouse’s Tom Ziller explains that there could be some logic behind it:

The sad thing about the episode is that it might actually be a good idea. So much uncertainty remains in the draft (even with the age minimum) that a performance scale could be useful to reward the best youngsters, who otherwise have to wait until the fifth year of their NBA careers to be rewarded.

But when the Grizzlies try to pull it off, it drudges up all those old beliefs about frugality Gay’s contract seemed to erase. The period of time in which Heisley’s critics had to hold off on calling the owner cheap lasted all of a week. Well done, Grizz.

Well said, Mr. Ziller.

i just wanna say to “the philosopher” in case he shows up:YOURE FULL OF SH1T dude, who are you tryin to fool with your clichés?! -moneys not the root of all evil, its the lack of it there is…STFU, you retard, yes, evil crimes are commited by people in need BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF GREEDY MILLIONAIRES WHO DONT NEED SH1T AND ARE A DISGRACE FOR THE HUMAN RACE…oh, i also dont give a sh1t bout Xavir Henry contract issues.

  • Remo Williams

    @TrailBlazing… you mad?

  • WangChung

C’mon Grizz, just pay the man. You’ll likely be begging this kid to sign an extension down the line.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

im mad cause this dude keeps riding brons d1ck and in the Maverick Carter/10k pendant story he comes with another cliché like he allways does…just cause smthing sounds good doesnt mean it makes sense. dude´s annoying as sh1t. otherwise, not mad at anything or anybody.

  • The Philosopher

Stop hating behind the computer. The King will prevail like always! The King rules the universe. Money has change Mr. Henry. He has been mutated into a slave of power. He is now under the ultimate ruler who we call the King. The King will prevail!

  • thalilbigkahuna

Ok, so money is not the root of all evil. The actual quote is that “the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.” Money cannot be evil in and of itself, it’s people who are evil. Just wanted to throw that out there.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

The rook needs to learn his place.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

the quote is “money is the root of all evil”, you can agree with that or not… but he spit -money´s not the root of all evil, the lack of money is-..and to me thats just being stupid while trying to seem like a smart dude, witch obviously hes not. stick to your legendary d1ckrides of “the king” philosopher.

“The comments section is a place to further discuss the topics in this post. This site is supposed to be used to discuss what’s going on in the basketball world, us communicating through a mutual love for the game. Please try to keep it that way.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

i usually keep it clean, i´ll try harder next time around, not easy with the philosopher.

    @Trailblazing&SportingLisbon:
My “cliches” are what is on your mind? You are making me feel like I rule sh!t. LOL!

  • The Philosopher

    @TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon:
“Money is not the root of all evil, it’s the lack of it.”
Now, when someone who is evil or just, rich or poor, commits an action regarding money that some may deem inappropriate, repugnant or malicious, or what have you, it is generally because that individual(s) seek a greater amount of money. As if they do not possess enough money.
People who do not commit such actions regarding money generally do not feel that they need more money. They do not feel that they are “lacking” money.
So again, it’s not money that is the root of all evil… It’s THE LACK OF IT.

Hey, maybe the Philosopher can make up things to prove his point, like when he made up the fact that Jennings destroyed Ricky Rubio in 5 on 5s in the Wolves pre-draft workout, which Rubio never even went to.

  • Ronald

@Moose: If Slamonline.com actually followed it’s ruls then people like Phil would have been banned a long time ago. His statements are made to rile people up (His Lebron praising etc.) for responses which is the definition of “trolling”.

@-Mas-: no. They’ve scouted him, they drafted him, so they have to pay him. Also: what if Henry gets some awful injury during the Summer League that will keep him out all season? So they just need to get this done.

  • The Philosopher

Maybe Jukai can explain his suicidal tendencies, for he has come up here imploring that someone “shoot” him.
Maybe he can speak about being an alcoholic, also, for he has often spoken of his alcoholic tendencies on these threads.
Maybe he can speak about the lie he procured onto the good people of SLAM about Kobe Bryant being a better shooter than Larry Bird.
To this day, that is THE worst sh!t… of all time.

  • ShadiestBen

Whatever the argument and however crazy each persons opinion is I would back Jukai over Philospher 110 percent of the time because Philosopher is a wierd anoyying dick rider. If he’s remotely like he is on these msg boards in the outside world he must get ridiculed more than he does on this site.

  • WangChung

@Mr. Robinson: Sir, perhaps you misunderstood my post. Nowhere did I state that Kobe was a better shooter than Larry Legend, but I wouldn’t call the argument ridiculous. How do you judge a shooter? By his mechanics? If that was the case, we’d be talking about guys like Ray Ray, Melo and hell, Jason Kapono.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I’ve been a big fan of Henry’s for ages. I was wondering why he wasn’t getting any minutes in the SL, guess this explains it. If Mayo is moving to the point then Henry could be the starting 2 on the Grizz. However, Mayo doesn’t seem to be a great PG and Henry fits in better on almost any other team. I wish the Pacers had taken him at 10 to start at the 2.

  • Mr. Robinson

    @WangChung:
I never said you believed that kobe is a better shooter.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

Lemme tie these two things together: can you provide a link to EITHER me saying racist remarks/being called a racist… or a link that shows Jennings playing against Rubio in Minny?
Until then, you’re lying about two things.
    Good going, kid.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

unrel: The Philosopher claimed, to prove a point about how inferior Rubio was, that Rubio got destroyed in a Minnesota draft camp session one-on-one by Jennings. This didn’t happen. He makes a lot of claims that aren’t true, so I try to spread it around. I don’t like guys who spread misinformation.
He likes to try and counter that I believe Kobe is a better shooter than Bird. In my criteria, Kobe is. Apparently that makes me a racist against white people.

  • The Philosopher

You don’t like guys who spread misinformation?
Then, I see why you are “suicidal” and hateful towards yourself.
So, what, your “criteria” is filled with misinformation?
Because Kobe being a better shooter than Bird, then you coming up here to tell it… You are lying.

  • The Philosopher

    I don’t know, Allenp.
    It is pointless.

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

    Sigh…
Bird has a lot of offensive skills that are better than Kobe. Bird was a ‘smarter, more efficient’ scorer. Bird had spots on the floor he loved to shoot, knew he could make. Bird was also fantastic at moving without the ball, far better than Kobe ever was or could be. Bird could get separation from his man for a perfect shot, but he also could stop-fake his steps, run around screens perfectly, and knew exactly what to do to get his man away from him for a wide open shot.
This allowed Bird to shoot a higher percentage.
When I think ‘shooting,’ I think shooting in all forms. If Bird’s teammates all backed off and Bird had to get a shot off from any spot on the court, I’d have less confidence in Bird than I’d have with Kobe in the same situation. Kobe has no ‘confort spots’ on the floor. Kobe shoots with two, three defenders on him, cause he’s so confident with his shot, he doesn’t need to see the basket. Kobe has such a great arsenal of shooting moves, that while I agree Bird also had them (spin-to-shoot, fades, leaners) and was fantastic at using them, I’d take Kobe to make the bucket on anything other than a spot up jump shot.
That, to me, is what makes Kobe a better shooter. He isn’t a SMARTER OFFENSIVE PLAYER and takes way harder shots… but in my mind, Kobe’s a better shooter.
If you take off-ball space creation and wise offensive judgement into account when you think ‘shooting’ then Kobe wouldn’t be a better shooter than Bird.
Alright, I explained my logic. Now find me that link.

  • The Philosopher

You are beating a dead horse…
What about the Britney Griner thread…
If you are thinking about “shooting being in all forms”, why then, if Kobe is a better shooter than Bird, doesn’t it reflect in their free throw percentages?

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

What about the Britney Griner thread?
I admit I was childish and my comments were borderline sexist. But hey, I didn’t lie!
Bird was a better free throw shooter than Kobe. That’s a really dumb argument. I saw Kobe is overall a better shooter than Bird, not better at every facet of shooting. Bird was a better spot-up shooter, that’s undeniable.
So you’re going to keep dodging the fact that you made up the Rubio/Jennings thing? Just admit you were mistaken and I’ll leave you alone!

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

What gets me is that the author said the players need to wait until their 5th year to get rewarded. As of this writing, NO rookie has done ANYTHIGN in the league yet, so why reward them? Making 750,000+ out of college is pretty darn good. People don’t seem to realize how much money these prima donna NBA players are trying to snatch. It’s ridiculous, really. Play out 100% of your contract with bonuses to 120%, and if you’re good enough, you’ll make even more. If not, you don’t deserve teh pay day anwyay.

  • The Philosopher

That’s really what I heard, brethren. I tried to tell you that I may have been mistaken.
    You won’t let it go.
So, then, why is their “overall” percentages so distant from each other? If their %’s were closer, you and I wouldn’t have even made it this far, but they’re not. So, is your thesis a mistaken thesis?
Bird had multiple defenders on him also, and still was Larry Bird.

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

You ARE mistaken. A simple google search will reveal that it NEVER happened. Acknoledging the sky MAY very well be blue and not red doesn’t make you look any less stupid.
Their overall percentages are radically different for several reasons:
a- Larry Bird had a better team
b- Larry Bird was actually a PASSING threat… when you can pass out of double/triple teams seamlessly, you see them less
c- Kobe took a lot of stupid shots in his career. He still does. Kobe will go three-on-one when a teammate is open. Kobe would rather fade over three defenders than give it to Odom to create something. This is Kobe’s flaw. Bird wouldn’t just shoot, he’d search for an opening, get into one of his patented spots on the floor, and shoot an easy two. Someone told me that he considers Kobe’s trigger happiness to make him a worse shooter, and I acknowledged that and said in his criteria, Bird is a better shooter. But if we’re talking about getting off any type of shot anywhere on the floor without separating space by running without the ball, I give it to Kobe.
    Capish?

  • The Philosopher

    One more thing, Jukai.
Is being a proven sexist better or worse than merely being wrong about a topic of discussion?

  • ConeyIslander

Rookies shouldn’t be allowed to speak in public let alone make demands! If I ran the League I’d keep them on 10-30 day contracts for all of year 1 until they prove they belong! lol

  • The Philosopher

So, when Bird averaged 29.9ppg, he wasn’t shooting the ball with people on him? Teams would know that he was a scoring threat, but… he never averaged 10 assists?

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

Yeah, I’m sure because I said “damn, that chick looks like a dude” I’m going to carry the label of sexist around forever. I’m really worried about that.
You’re nitpicking. Of course Bird shot over double and triple teams. Kobe does it far more often. During that near 30 point season, Bird scored a lot more in the post and on drives. Bird WASN’T just a shooter. Honestly, I’m sure someone could look this up, but I bet Kobe takes more jumpshots than Bird does. I can’t say that with 100% certainty, but from my recollection of both players at the same age, Kobe would generally take more jumpshots. Bird liked to be in the paint. He was unfairly tagged as simply a jump shooter cause of his three point championship trophies.
And Bird averaged 7+ assists. As a forward. Who couldn’t dribble. He was a ridiculous passer. Not even debatable here.

  • The Philosopher

    Bird couldn’t dribble, now?
Kobe’s a better shooter than Bird, AND Bird can’t dribble?
And yes, I’m nitpicking. I’m just adding that because, you really act like I have bad intentions up here, when actually, you do.

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

Hey, you made up the Jennings/Rubio thing then refused to admit you were probably wrong up until five minutes ago when I’ve pretty much forced your hand. How do I have bad intentions again?
Bird wasn’t a terribly good dribbler. His dribble was REALLY high. Like, shockingly high for such a superstar player. He was fine in the open court, but you never saw Bird crossing cats over in traffic.
I mean, were you alive in the 80s?

  • The Philosopher

So, being that Bird wasn’t doing Iverson antics with 4 people on him, he couldn’t dribble? I’m not saying he was Isiah, but…
And, again, that’s what I heard. I didn’t make it up.
So, you haven’t answered me yet. Is a proven sexist better or worse than someone that may have been just merely mistaken on a topic?
You have worse intentions than I do, no?

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

    Jukai and phil are turdburglars

  • The Philosopher

    Hey, Tarzan!
I use “turdburglar” everywhere I go, now.
I can’t say it up here too much. That’s all you. You should copyright that sh1t, man! lol.

  • EJ

hahaha what is going on right now these clowns are talking about everything except what their supposed to be talking bout

  • binding

    @jukai @the philosopher get a room

  • The Philosopher

Not to flame, but Jukai, are you going to answer me?
Is a proven, ADMITTED sexist AND a hypocritical racist who thinks Kobe Bryant is a better shooter than LARRY BIRD BETTER OR WORSE than a guy who may have merely been mistaken on a thread?????
    Again, you are a fraud.

  • Ronald

Dude, Phil. Please, for once in your life can you stop dodging arguments and actually put up some sort of a well thought out opinion with proper reasoning?

  • The Philosopher

    @Ronald:
    I do.

  • Shem

Rookies have no right to get into contract disputes, it’s not the Grizzlies fault he was drafted where he was drafted. Well it is, but I mean it’s not their fault he wasn’t drafted higher and got the money he believes he deserves. Raptors had 13th pick and I was SOOOOOO PISSED when I saw him taken right before Toronto, guess it was a blessing in disguise.

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Youre welcome phil, and I hope u enjoy it, shem, raps wold have given him 120 of rookie contract, its pretty standard. Grizz are just being douches

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

Philosopher: Sorry bro, I went out. You know, outside world. And that’s ME saying that, so that’s saying something.
Yeah, a sexist and racist is worse than a guy who is mistaken. It’s too bad I’m neither a sexist or racist and you’re a guy who lies to trick people into believing what you’re saying, which in itself is pathetic, since it’s the damn internet. Why even bother?
    Alright, have fun responding kid.

  • http://fdsjklfl.com Jukai

The racist accusations are hysterical. LARRY BIRD SUCKED CAUSE HE’S WHITE F WHITE PEOPLE.

  • rich

    where is the lovÉ
i dont even think cleveland fans would b this malicious to lebron. its okay to argue whos a better shooter or who cant drible or whatever but defamation doesnt really prove ur point, just makes 2 smart people with good ideas look like 10 year olds. you guys are much better than this

  • http://slamonline.com JL

can we just start a threat where it’s philosopher against the world and let them carry the conversation there? I can’t even find anything in the comments on the rook’s issues.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I heard Xavier pronounces his name “Zaveeay.” Is that true? That’s probably why the Grizzlies won’t give him the 120%… What a stupid name…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

LOL jk I actually like that pronunciation.

  • Hussman25

Over 100 comments for an article like this??? U can tell the comments section @ times gets out of hand but DAMN! Over 100 for X??? Stick to the topic people….

  • The Philosopher

    Jukai:
    You started it.
I use “lies” to “trick” people. Funny guy.
I never LIED and said Bird can’t dribble, either.
    You made that up.
