Andris Biedrins Did Not Enjoy Last Season

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Andris Biedrins had a tough season last year. His team was awful, for starters. And then things began to really go south when his coach, Don Nelson, started to criticize his free-throw shooting.

And the wheels finally came off when the big fella’s body betrayed him, and he went down permanently with an abdominal tear.

Biedrins opened up about everything, and really let loose with some Latvian media. The blog Warriors World did us all the solid of translating the goods.

Read the entire thing
, but here are some highlights:

On outsourcing his off-season training and rehab: “The franchise naturally tried everything to keep me in, because if I had surgery early on then I might have missed the entire season. We felt like the team made me play to quick after the first injury; so we decided to go our own way on this – our doctors and experts.”

On NBA culture: “The NBA is basically the second most popular sport in America after football. It’s just the mentality there. I can tell you right now, about our team, most of my teammates are egoists. But what can you do?”

On Nellie commenting about his free-throw shooting: “When he said I should practice underhanded; I felt very disrespected. At one point I spoke to a Psychiatrist who reminded me of some things, but it’s not so bad that they send you and try to brainwash you.”

I love it when foreign NBA players head back home, and do these type of interviews. They’re always so much more candid with their own press than the American one.

Here’s to hoping they don’t discover Google Translate anytime soon.

that all seems like legit complaints except the underhand freethrow shooting stuff. What the hell dude, this is your job, stop slacking and work on your freebies, buddy

  • larrylegend

    bummer

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/overdribbling/index276.html chiqo

biedrins placed on the trade block in 3… 2… 1…

  • http://slamonline.com mike

Well I didn’t enjoy watching him play last season either…

  • underdog

Last season? Whatever. But Andris Biedrins and David Lee on the same team sounds really good.

  • Beni

Maybe he can wipe his tears with some of that $11 mill he made

u can’t be disrespected if you’re talking about 50% free throw shooting. just do whatever could work. cuz it ain’t working now. no wonder his FT shooting hasn’t improved at all.

  • Dagger

All of this is very unprofessional and very disappointing. They need to crack the whip in Oakland.

  • T-Money

yeah… when you shoot 16% from the free throw line, just keep it quiet and take the abuse.

  • wilz

we’ll take him in toronto..we need a latvian to complete the UN. he can play D AND he wont scare bargnani

  • LA Huey

co-sign Jukai. I wonder if Nellie will actually play Lee and Biedrins at the same time. It’s the best thing for us and make complete sense but with Nellie…

  • Jordan

I don’t think what he is saying is unprofessional at all. I mean at least someone is finally saying how they truly feel. I’ve grown sick of all of the cliches that pro athletes throw around. I do disagree with the whole free throw shooting thing, but other than that he is just staying true to himself

  • Mat

Andres, you shot 16% on your FTs! You were obviously afraid to handle the ball on offense. How can you be offended by your head coach suggesting other ways to help you and the team? Pride is one thing. Stubborness is another. What about your ego? Do what you need to in order to improve and help the team. 16% FT and only 4 guys playing offense is not helping the team.

  • total scrotal implosion

Egoists on the team. Could he have possibly meant monta and steph?

  • klav

yeah for the amount of money he is getting paid, shouldnt he at least be making more free throws than a 6th grade rec league? i mean damn sure monta is selfish as hell. but at least hes better at making free throws.

  • unrel

thanks ron-ron.. now they’re all seeing psychs..

  • JTaylor21

In mother russia we don’t have fun playing ball; ball have fun playing you.

  • Coney Islander

Rick Barry shot freebies underhanded, and he was no slouch. I don’t care how they go up, just as long as they go in.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

although 16% is inexcusable, he was injured. shouldnt have been playing. but then again, he’s not a good free throw shooter to begin with. check his mechanics.
as for egoists, kinda wondering who he’s talking about

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

hah jtaylor21, even though biedrins is from latvia, i always thought he looked like ivan drago. it was dope when marco was on the team too. looked exactly like a young stallone.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Team doctors don’t make decision with a player’s best interests in mind?
    Who would have thunk it?

  • http://www.realgm.com Gman

All except the FTs are good.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

He can talk when he starts making free throws. You really don’t even need to be playing if 16 percent is th best you can shoot. I’m sorry, but thats just how I see it. Thats embarrassing and pathetic.

  • http://sdfjklf.com Jukai

Has anyone EVER shot worse than 16% for a season? I know he was injured so he didnt play enough games for it to officially count… but ignoring that, has anyone ever shot worse? I really want to know!

  • The Philosopher

    Jukai:
I was waiting on somebody else to post it, but I guess I will:
Garfield Smith previously had the record. (19.4%)
Bidrens has the worst single season free throw percentage in NBA History.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@Philosopher: Though I didn’t know that stat, I figured Biedrins had to be the worst. Thats not even funny thats so bad.

  • Dagger

Jordan: you should know this, but things that are unprofessional about Biedrins’s comments:

    1. He was historically bad at an aspect of his job last year and his boss – one of the most accomplished men in his field – suggested an effective but potentially embarrassing technique to him. He balked. First, it’s up to him to improve so he doesn’t have to feel “disrespected,” and second when you suck at something don’t complain about your boss giving you tips – any tips.
    2. It’s never professional to complain about your coworkers, especially not in a public forum that will get back to them.

Basically Biedrins will earn the right to complain when he starts earning his salary. Even then, you can bet it won’t help his career because it will still sound unprofessional.

I feel like he quit on my fantasy team.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I know white players who can shoot are tired of the Larry Bird, or Dan Marley (sorry, I tried to spell it…) compairson… But is THIS guy not like Christian Laettner after college??? Anyone else remember Rex Chapman??? Not a great player, but hit some big shots..

  • http://google c_cantrell

well crap he aint making anything the way he is doing it now i woulda told him to shoot underhanded too lol
