Atlanta Hawks Not Left With Many Options at Center

They passed on Shaq, and now must choose between Kwame Brown and a bunch of other big dudes no one wants: From the AJC: “Last month [Al] Horford said the Hawks needed to add an ‘impact’ center, and power forward Josh Smith agreed. Horford was an All-Star last season, but he’s undersized for the position by NBA standards. He said he is willing to share minutes with a bigger center. ‘I think that is the position we need if we want to be any type of contender in the East,’ Horford said. While Horford was an All-Star and Pachulia is an effective backup, the bigger front lines of Boston and Orlando figure to be tough challenges for the Hawks, should they meet those teams in the playoffs. There don’t appear to be any impact centers left on the free-agent market after two waves of signings. The Hawks were said to have some interest in Kwame Brown, who could provide some post defense but is limited on offense. Other centers yet to sign include Josh Boone, Francisco Elson and Brian Skinner.”

Atlanta Hawks Not Left With Many Options at Center”… except for their All-Star center Al Horford.

    Where’s Z-PAC?
On another note, I think the best option of the listed is Brian Skinner…

I’m guessing Lang didn’t write this headline.

I woulda loved to have Shaq, but according to this story:
Shaq wanted to start over Horford.

So that said, I don’t really mind the Hawks passing on him.

Josh Boone would be an OK pick up. The starting role wasn’t really fit for him in NJ, but as a back-up, I think he would be allright.

  • Brian

Why not sign Shaq and start him with Horford at the 4? That would be a big step forward for them size wise to me.

  • tavoris

@Brian-Shaq already signed with the Celtics.

    it would have been
    pf-horford(he’s only 6-9 to 6-10)
    SG-Joe Overpaid Johnson

That woulda been a nice strong lineup. should be an upgrade defensively but probably not so good offensively with jsmoove lacking the perimeter skills for a SF.

decent options for people you’re going to pay the minimum for. they won’t come in and cause problems. they have limitations, but at this point of the summer, who doesn’t?

  • Brian

@tavoris, I was speaking hypothetically of the options that were available to the Hawks.

  • J-RO

Struggle against Boston? They WHOOPED Boston all last season.

  • tavoris

    my bad, Brian.

The Bulls will pass them and so will a healthy Bucks team.

  • ab_40

ah sign brown and elson both to 2 mil max to vet minimum contracts with a one year deal and a team option for the next. hey at least elson has got a ring and he can run when he’s not injured. why stickum isn’t kwame brown his main sponser is beyond me him and that product were made for eachother. too bad he still can’t catch a basketball. Horford and Smith will bring all the shotblocking they need. I wonder what the point guard situation is gonna look like and also what joe johnson is gonna bring to the table because it looks a lot like an alan houston deal to me.

    Josh Boone is decent.

  • Mack

Hawks aren’t gonna win anything so what’s the big fuss?

  • Coney Islander

    Mack, CO-SIGN 100%!

@Mack Agreed, the Hawks are a teaser.

Looking at some possible trades, try this:

    Hawks get: Birdman, Afflalo

    Nuggets get: Zaza, Evans.

    Hawks get: Marc Gasol, Conley

    Memphis gets: Zaza, Bibby

  • http://google c_cantrell

never understood why the hawks passed on him but now it makes sense.. thanks bro

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

@sam- what, you didn’t want to try and trade for kobe? cause it’s probably as likely as packaging zaza and bibby and getting anything worthwhile in return.

  • total scrotal implosion

Hawks have to trade smoove or horford. Or they will be right where they are, 5 or 6 seed, maybe make it to second round and get pummelled by orl.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@sam, are you 10 years old? seriously, why not Bibby for hummm, i know.. DWIGHT HOWARD?!?!? Otis and SVG would jump all over that!!

  • blackpinoy

Looking at some possible trades, try this: Hawks get: Birdman, Afflalo Nuggets get: Zaza, Evans. OR Hawks get: Marc Gasol, Conley Memphis gets: Zaza, Bibby ..THERES NO WAY MEMPHIS WOULD GIVE MARC GASOL AND CONLEY FOR ZPAC AND BIBBY. NO EFFING WAY. (ON SECOND THOUGHT THEY DID TRADE PAU FOR KWAME) I HAVE A BETTER IDEA. SIGN KWAME THEN TRADE HIM FOR MARC. DE JAVU ALL OVEER AGAIN!!

  • Ronald

    @Sam: Heh.

  • ethan

Francisco Elson might be the way to go. His game didn’t improve while in San Antonio–foul prone, too few rebounds. But he was athletic, and added energy. On the Hawks team, there is no pressure for him to score, so Elson could concentrate on being a defensive presence. He could even run the floor under what I think the Hawks new coach Larry Drew will do-up tempo the offense.
