Ben Gordon to Play for England in 2011

BG tells the Detroit Free Press that he’ll be donning a British jersey next summer in the Euro Championships: “While continuing his rehabilitation from off-season ankle surgery, Gordon made a whistle-stop visit across the Atlantic on Thursday to pledge his allegiance to Great Britain, vowing to play for the national team next summer. Gordon, 27, was born in London. ‘I moved to New York when I was 10 months old,’ he said. ‘I would visit every summer when I was younger to visit my dad. But when I started to play competitively, I stopped coming, because summer’s the time when you get better.’ Gordon reconnected with his extended family two years ago on a journey back to the British capital. His father, Howard, has since moved to Africa, but there was a new set of relatives to meet who had only previously seen him, late at night, on the infrequent TV screenings of the NBA in a country where basketball is not a major sport — and where he could walk down most streets unrecognized … Basketball is the only sport where the host nation does not receive an automatic bid at the Olympics. But the influence of Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng — and a mix of Europe-based veterans and American college prospects — has strengthened the case for an invite to the London Games in 2012. That is one of the major attractions for Gordon to get on board. ‘Just to participate in an Olympics is special enough, but to play it here in 2012, in the country I was born,’ he said. ‘It would be amazing to play against the U.S. And to beat them.”‘

And beat them? I doubt we (GB) will even qualify.

  • Overtime

    We will defnitely qualify.
Dont think we should go around talking about beating the US, but we’re on the road to qualification

Team Great Britain qualified last night people and Ben Gordon was at the game in Liverpool on the sidelines cos hes injured. Luol Deng had like 38pts and 14 rebs, Pops Mensah-Bonsu (Former Raptor and dunking beasssstt) had 30pts and 20 boards! With BG on the team we gonna be tough!

I love BG. But man, beat the U.S? I’ll never root for a Soccer nation to beat ‘THE’ Hoops nation. No way that is happening.

Gordon, Deng, mensah-bonsu = good core

  • Griffin

He’ll playing for Britain, not England – sort the headline. Don’t GB get automatic entry to 2012 as host country?

  • Griffin

Just read the story – no automatic qualification! Seems a little harsh…reckon we’ll get there anyway.

  • Overtime

@Griffin, it is indeed ridicolous, luckily, it seems to have only served as fuel for our team though

  • total scrotal implosion

When did they say that tmoney? I just see where it says his dad moved to africa. …. Didnt realize there are so many limeys on here.

    argh!! England is NOT Britain!!

  • CONEY ISLANDER

    AND?

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com Clutch Performer

england and great britain arent the same, ok that actually clears things up but dont the compete together as the UK?

  • LA Huey

@total scrotal, I think he means they just refer to the continent instead of specifying the country or a particular region. People will often reference specific location when they talk about North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Bascially, Africa is often generalized as opposed to the other continents.

American #1: ‘Hey what country is Ginobili from again?’ American #2: ‘Ummm, Europe?’

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@yellow I’m the furthest thing from British, just a basketball fan, and you can’t tell me there are too many more teams in the world that would have more individual talent than those 5. Of course they can’t compete with the US, thats not what I was even hinting at.

  • hoodsnake

Luol Deng 14 boards? Who did they play? The Vatican?

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@hoodsnake LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL….lol its like 5 am and I just peed my pants dude lol

  • A Mac

International ball is more wide-open that NBA, longer boards means Lu gets double-digits. And GB only lost to Spain (when Spain had a full roster and we had no Deng, BG, Richards or Azubuike) by a couple of points. Don’t dismiss GB with a home crowd behind them against anyone…espesh as it’s not like LeCon, Dwight, Melo et al have ever won a lot, or played in many hostile away venues.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@A Mac…stick to footy please, you obviously don’t know much about this sport

  • JTaylor21

Loul Deng SUCKS!!!!! Also Africa is not a country for all you “I’m not smarter than a 5th grader” Americans.

  • JD

the headlines wrong its britain not england thats like calling team usa california still gb are in euros next stop olympics

  • JD

dont talk bout team gb not beating team usa cos kobe, lebron & co cos realistically not all the great players will be there team gb are proud to play for their tem usa play only when its convenient to them. luol dengs excuse for not playing was injury carmelos excuse this summer was shooting a film. plus all the free agency guys quit on usa for something which didnt even take up the trainning camp they just cant be bothered

  • DK

really! You fools think that GB has some kinda chance against the US?!? That’s funny..and Ben Gordon is a garbage.. I have seen him throw away many games as a bull because he will go 6 for 20 or whatever cause he ain’t a team player.. Gordon belongs in GB playing, not the NBA.. If we are being nice he is a decent bench player, but I don’t feel like being nice.. Seen him throw away too many games cause he doesn’t know how to pass the ball! You can keep em.. Now I know he was born there it’s all making sense..
