By Any Means Necessary

The upcoming NBA season could be one of the best ever.

by Bryan Crawford / @_Bryancrawford

A year ago I wrote Winning Now or Never which focused on NBA powerhouse squads making moves to make themselves more or less “instant” contenders to compete for a ‘ship.

It’s always cool to look back on that piece—as well as the comments—because I feel sort of prophetic in my analysis.

Last year I gave both the Celtics and the Lakers “A+” grades and they were the two teams competing in the NBA Finals this past June. I gave the Magic an “A” (they made it to the ECF), the Spurs an “A” (injuries to key players certainly didn’t help their cause) and the Cavs a “B-” (told’ja).

This season, not many of the teams will change, but the concept remains the same. So let’s start things off with the…

Los Angeles Lakers

Additions: Steve Blake ($16 million, 4 years), Matt Barnes ($1.7 million, 1 year), Derek Fisher ($10.5 million, 3 years), Shannon Brown ($4.6 million, 2 years), Theo Ratliff ($1.3 million, 1 year), Derrick Caracter ($473K, 1 year), Devin Ebanks ($473K, 1 year)

Subtractions: Jordan Farmar, DJ Mbenga, Adam Morrison, Josh Powell

Taxable ’10-’11 Salary: $38.9 million

Grade: A+

With Jordan Farmar clearly not in their plans for the future, the Lakers needed to address their already desperate need at PG. It’s no secret that Derek Fisher, the champion that he is, has a lot of miles on him and having him as the lead guard another season was clearly not an option.  So they went out and got the much younger Steve Blake to run the show. With Blake, not only did they get bigger in size at the position, they got a veteran and savvy point guard who should be able to pick up the offense quickly and is a better fit for the triangle as opposed to the aforementioned Farmar. L.A. then signed Theo Ratliff as Andrew Bynum insurance, but the biggest improvement should come with the addition of Matt Barnes—who came on board for a dirt cheap price— who is an excellent perimeter defender that gives the Lakers even more size as well as a threat from long range. By adding Barnes to the mix with Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant and their size and length in the paint, the Lakers now have arguably the best defensive team in the NBA. With Kobe healthy, and if Bynum can actually play a full season without getting hurt, look for the Lakers to win the NBA Championship again next year in Phil Jackson’s last year as an NBA head coach. A championship next season would be the third three-peat in franchise history and would tie the Boston Celtics for most championships in NBA history at 17.

Miami Heat

Additions: Dwyane Wade ($14.2 million in ’10-’11) LeBron James ($14.5 million in ’10-’11), Chris Bosh ($14.5 million in ’10-’11), Mike Miller ($29 million, 5 years), Joel Anthony ($18 million, 5 years), Udonis Haslem ($3.5 million in ’10-’11), Zydrunas Ilgauskas ($2.4 million, 2 years), Juwan Howard ($1.3 million, 1 year), Eddie House ($2.8 million, 2 years), James Jones ($1.1 million, 1 year), Shavlik Randolph ($992K, 1 year), Patrick Beverly ($947K, 2 years), Kenny Hasbrouck ($762K, 1 year), Dexter Pittman (473K, 1 year)

Subtractions: Michael Beasley, Jermaine O’Neal, Quentin Richardson, Daequan Cook, Dorrell Wright

Taxable ’10-’11 Salary: $6.66 million

Grade: A+

The Miami Heat practically gutted their squad over the summer. As much as I hate to admit it and as much as I hate this new NBA trend of superstars wanting to join forces instead of competing against one another, by re-signing Dwyane Wade and adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play alongside him, those three alone make the Heat, at least on paper, the best team in basketball and favorites to win it all next year. But games aren’t played on paper and what isn’t certain is the supporting cast Miami has surrounded Wade, James and Bosh with. The one drawback to signing three max players is not having enough financial flexibility to surround those guys with the best talent available. In a nutshell, you can’t get what you want; you have to take what you can afford. The next best player the team added is Mike Miller who gives them consistent perimeter shooting, but not a whole lot on defense and his production has been way down the last two seasons. The rest of the roster is made up of players either old and past their primes (see Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Juwan Howard) or just not championship caliber (see almost everyone else). This makes the Heat’s chances of winning a title this season not as much of a sure thing as everyone predicts. Still, games have to be played and you can’t do any worse than having three of the best players in the NBA on the same team. In all honesty, we could very well have a potential dynasty on our hands on South Beach. Whatever happens, we’re all going to be watching very, very closely. If the price of League Pass goes up this season, you’ll know why.

Bulls BoozerChicago Bulls

Additions: Carlos Boozer ($75 million, 5 years), Kyle Korver ($15 million, 3 years), Ronnie Brewer ($12.5 million, 3 years), CJ Watson ($10.2 million, 3 years), Kurt Thomas ($1.8 million, 1 year), Omer Asik ($1.7 million in ’10-’11)

Losses: Kirk Hinrich, Brad Miller, Flip Murray, Acie Law, Jannero Pargo, Hakim Warrick

Taxable ’10-’11 Salary: $0 (Under Salary Cap)

Grade: A

Not saying that the Bulls could win a championship this season, but based on their offseason moves, I’d be remiss if I didn’t add them here. First they managed to steal Tom Thibodeau from Doc Rivers’ bench and made him head coach. Long considered to be a defensive guru, Thibodeau not only brings that aspect of resume to Chicago but also an NBA Championship ring which he won as an assistant under Rivers two seasons ago. Secondly, Chicago finally added a low-post scorer in Carlos Boozer who is one of the best in the business at his position. He gives them that inside presence that they have long coveted and his toughness and career scoring averages of 17 points and 10 rebounds will be a welcome addition alongside rising star Joakim Noah in the paint. The team also added sharp-shooter Kyle Korver and a very good perimeter defender in Ronnie Brewer giving the Bulls three former Jerry Sloan disciples. With a healthy Luol Deng and the continued maturation and development of Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose, Chicago will assuredly be one of the top five teams in the Eastern Conference. They may not be able to contend for a championship right away, but it certainly looks as if they’re headed in the right direction.

Boston CelticsCeltics Shaq Basketball

Additions: Ray Allen ($20 million, 2 years), Jermaine O’Neal ($11.9 million, 2 years), Nate Robinson ($8.7 million, 2 years), Shaquille O’Neal ($2.7 million, 2 years), Avery Bradley ($10.6 million, 5 years), Von Wafer ($915K, 1 year), Luke Harangody ($437K, 1 year), Semih Erden ($437K, 1 year)

Losses: Rasheed Wallace, Tony Allen, Michael Finley, Brian Scalabrine, Shelden Williams, Bill Walker

Taxable ’10-’11 Salary: $21.78 million

Grade: B-

With Rasheed Wallace retiring Kendrick Perkins out with a knee injury and not expected to return until at least February, the Boston Celtics bolstered their front line by adding the two O’Neal’s, Jermaine and Shaquille. My only question is what took so long for this to happen? I can’t wait to see those S-dot and J-dot jerseys. Although neither player is what they used to be and while Jermaine should log the most minutes of the two, even at 38-years-old, Shaq can still play and having him on your team never hurts. When Perkins returns, the Celtics will have the most formidable front line in the NBA. The re-signing of Nate Robinson, who should play a much larger role as Rajon Rondo’s backup, was a good move and so was re-signing Ray Allen. Doc Rivers should once again have his team in contention for a title next year but come playoff time, he will have six players 30-years-old or older on his roster. The Celtics may be second oldest team in the NBA (the Lakers are the oldest), but they have a good mix of veterans and young guys that all know how to play hard and compete. That’s always a dangerous combination.

Magic Richardson BasketballOrlando Magic

Additions: JJ Redick ($20 million, 3 years), Chris Duhon ($14.3 million, 4 years), Quentin Richardson ($2.2 million in ’10-’11), Jason Williams ($854K, 1 year), Daniel Orton ($8.6 million, 5 years), Stanley Robinson ($476K, 1 year)

Losses: Matt Barnes, Anthony Johnson

Taxable ’10-’11 Salary: $37.84 million

Grade: D

The moves that the Orlando Magic made which garnered them a grade of “A” last year is in stark contrast to the moves they made this year which earned them such a low mark. Yes, they’re still a team capable of winning it all, but even with Dwight Howard in the paint, this team is still primarily made up of guys who love to shoot from the outside and a squad built that way will never win a championship. Ever. Allowing your best perimeter defender (Matt Barnes) to leave and replacing him with someone (Quentin Richardson) who plays no defense at all was a real head scratcher. This puts even more pressure on Howard to defend the rim leaving him even more susceptible to foul trouble than he already is. Even with the Q deal and the re-signing of JJ Redick, Orlando did nothing to improve their chances of being a contender for the Eastern Conference crown. The Magic are still going to be a tough out in the East, but another appearance in the NBA Finals seems like a stretch at this point and Stan Van Gundy may find himself without a job after this season.

After all of the things that have taken place this summer, the 2010-2011 season is going to be one of the most anticipated and most watched in the NBA in quite some time. Look for the teams mentioned here to make some noise of course, but also watch out for squads like Portland, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Atlanta and Utah to add themselves to the conversation as well.

Lebron: Smarter than a 5th grader?
Pressure busts pipes. I learned this in 5th grade when I approached Sarah, the girl I was madly in love with. The pressure I felt made me sweat, stutter, and even forget what I was saying. After that brief conversation with her I learned that being a single 5th grade boy was actually better, and consisted of less pressure, than having Sarah as my girlfriend. I didn’t want to wake up every morning concerned about my clothing, image, confidence, and perceived coolness around Sarah. That would have been too much work and too much pressure. Besides 5th grade is a time you are supposed to enjoy.
And for all of these reasons I completely agree with Lebron James’ decision to go to Miami. Pressure busts pipes, and the water level was only increasing in Cleveland. The entire city seemed to be suffocating him more and more every day. He was all the city had to love, hold on to, and claim as their own. He was also the only one they could criticize, get angry with, and threaten a possible break up with. He had to wake up every morning concerned about his clothing, image, confidence, and perceived coolness while in Cleveland. Cleveland was Lebron’s Sarah. He wasn’t willing or even able to really commit to her. Real love and happiness are not accomplished when you are constantly under strain and stress. Waking up every morning bombarded with smothering expectations is not what living out your dream is all about.
Another thing I learned in 5th grade is that recess was the best time of the day. Sure it was tiring and draining as I ran around full speed the whole time with my friends. Sure I got into fights, disputes, and disagreements with classmates as we played on the playground. But it was absolute fun! As a 30 year old writer who faces many deadlines I often wish I could go back to 5th grade recess, the best time in life. And guess what? That’s exactly what Lebron just did. The only thing is he is getting paid millions of dollars to do so. He gets to run around with his best friends Wade and Bosh on one of the best playground facilities ever known, South Beach! Not only that but his childhood dream of winning a championship seems far more reachable in Miami compared to Cleveland.
Lebron James has learned everything I learned in 5th grade and is living it out. Instead of wasting his time under the ball and chain of serving Sarah (Cleveland) he has opted to have fun at recess with his best friends. And for that I’m happy for Lebron, because 5th grade only comes around once in a lifetime.

The Lakers are definitely the favorite.Phil Jackson has never won less than three championships in a row so I can’t bet against him. I’m anxious to see how Miami suckers mesh when they lose a game or two who gets the blame? They still can’t stop anybody inside so I guess we’ll see.

  • frank Posted: Aug.22 at 3:58 pm
Since when can you write comments that long?

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Aug.22 at 3:58 pm
@Rob… Apparently 5th grade comes along twice judging by what you just said. And yeah, pressure busts pipes. But it also makes diamonds. And without pressure, a diamond is nothing more than a piece of coal.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Aug.22 at 4:12 pm
@Bryan everything is not guaranteed. Is it written somewhere that Phil Jackson for certain will win three in a row this time around? Patterns are meant to be broken and it will this time around. Did the Bulls have an dominating inside defensive stopper, NO. So kill all that noise about them not stopping people inside. You act like there are great BIG men around the league, there’s only 2 or 3 in the league (DHow doesn’t belong).

  • rob stewart Posted: Aug.22 at 4:36 pm
    @frank
    I was suprised too!
    @Bryan
You make a very good point concerning pressure and diamonds, I can’t argue there. But the whole point of what I wrote is that if we could all go back to 5th grade recess and get paid for it we would. Especially if recess were held at South Beach and we could still win a chip.

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Aug.22 at 4:36 pm
@JTaylor… What are you talking about?

  • letsmotor Posted: Aug.22 at 4:50 pm
@JTaylor: The Bulls, in their first threepeat, had Bill Cartwright (not a great defender, but a good one) and Horace Grant (made second team all-defense a few times). In the second, they had Rodman (duh).

Not to sure about this season as being one of the best ever. Big call. Miami Heat have made the NBA into the soccer English Premiere league or Spanish League where there’s only a few teams that are considerably strong while making more weaker.

  • T-Money Posted: Aug.22 at 8:50 pm
Patterns are the worst arguments one can made when talking about sports. Tell me that LA is the favorite because they have an incredible team and an incredible coach. Don’t talk to me about a 4th 3-peat. / I agree with most of the article except one thing: 1- Miami has not really gutted their team. Anthony, Chalmers, Wade, Arroyo, Jones, Haslem. Half of the active roster were there last year. 2- Joel Anthony is an excellent shotblocker, Z is loooong and Magloire is a goon. They have options at the 5 spot and they will play it by committee. Dwight never kills Miami and Pau has trouble vs Z’s length. In fact, Miami was a top 5 defensive team LAST year. And that was with Beasley in the starting line up. Not saying they’re going to win it all but defense will not be an issue. Chemistry might.

  • T-Money Posted: Aug.22 at 8:51 pm
My bad, the point about defense was directed to Bryan the commenter and not the writer.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Aug.22 at 11:16 pm
Why would a pretty bad Miami team “gutting” their team be an argument against their success this season, after signing 3 freaking future hall of famers? No offense to the players, of course.

  • Dacre Posted: Aug.22 at 11:54 pm

We all know that Bynum will NOT stay healthy this season and that by the mid way point dude will be on the injured reserve. Dude is nothing but a slightly healthier Greg Oden. There’s nothing guaranteed in life expect for laker/kobe fanatics moronic beliefs.

Bryan awesome article. I disagree with one thing, I feel Orlando Magic grade should be an A. The Magic will have the best record in the East and match up well against the B Team. No one on the Heat can guard Howard. Pietrius always takes Lebron candy and frustrates him. Magic miss Matt Barnes for Wade, but they can guard his dribble drive and I would make him beat me with his jumper. Vince Carter just plays off of Wade. I pick the Magic to make it out of the East for a rematch against the Lakers. Orlando is getting tired of all of this Miami talk and will be ready to play. I truly believe Vince Carter will come back ready to prove everyone wrong. BOOK IT!!!

  • hoopistani Posted: Aug.23 at 8:51 am
@JTaylor21: whatever you say about the lakers, they have won two championships in a row. So what is more of a guarantee in life is the fact that the lakers are always there standing in the end. bynum or no bynum.

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Aug.23 at 9:00 am
Spurs. Everyone healthy, Jefferson a year into the system, George Hill ready for quality minutes, Tiago Splitter one of the best surprises in the league next year. People keep talking about the Lakers, Heat, Celtics, and Magic, but true basketball fans appreciate the Spurs. Championship level basketball, played the right way. SPURS BABY!

  • Bryan Posted: Aug.23 at 9:05 am
@the seed: howard is a beast, but until he develops a true post game, who is the #1 option on that team? vince carter has not come back ready to prove anything since 2004.

  • dsleepy Posted: Aug.23 at 9:06 am
uh…that ^^ was me. not bryan.

  • Ronald Posted: Aug.23 at 9:44 am
@Hoopistani: Dude, 2 championships doesn’t equate to any guarantees. Maybe, something along the lines of “Spurs will make the playoffs as long as Tim is healthy and playing” is more of an acceptable guarantee.

  • dirty frank Posted: Aug.23 at 10:08 am
“guarantee’s” in the sports world are a joke. Fans and players make them all the time. Good points about the Spurs. Never count them out. @theseed. Good luck with putting your faith in Wince.

  • The Seed Posted: Aug.23 at 10:21 am
    dsleepy
Howard doesn’t need a post move to get numbers and affect the game. Howard is the defensive player of the year, he can clog the middle, get 20 rebounds and get 20 points. His downfall is free throw shooting, but Orlando is built on three point attempts, so 3 pointers is Orlando number one option, its a stat where if they hit certain amount of 3 pointers they are unbeatable. Howard just has to be a willing passer, when he cannot make a post move.
    ________________________________________________
    dirty frank
Vince can come through, yes last year JJ Reddick played better than Vince against the Celtics, but this is Vince second year in the offense and understands that he needs to play off of Howard now. Vince has never played with a great center. Period. Magic will be the surprise team next year with best record in the EAST. BOOK IT!!

one of the few things i hope to see is a playoff match-up of possibly 4th and 5th seed Bucks and Bulls.. 2 up-and-coming teams, jennings vs rose. bogut-booz. 2 great defensive coaches. both teams have made great roster additions. if that happens- fireworks.

  • J Posted: Aug.23 at 11:29 am
@ seed.. so howard must be a willing passer if he cant make a post move.. so that means every single time.. lol.

The Seed is kinda of crazy. Dude, you really, really hate Lebron. It’s kind of weird.

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Aug.23 at 1:31 pm
@Ronald… If Chicago can duplicate anything close to what the Jazz have done in the much tougher Western Conference for the past few seasons, in the East, I don’t think there’s a Bulls fan around that wouldn’t take that.

  • T-Money Posted: Aug.23 at 3:30 pm
The Seed: its funny you think that a 18 ppg dude will destroy the heat but 3 top 10 scorers can be controlled by orlando. Bron Bron gave 38 ppg on 50% shootng to pietrus. If Orl’s strategy is to let wade walk into uncontested midrange jumpers he will give them 40. And STILL get to the rim. And I have yet to se the day when Shard can stop Bosh. / at this point, we get it: you dont like bron. I dont like Kobe but im no foolish enough to jot recgnize that the Lakers are favorites.

I don’t agree with the Magic’s grade. D? C’mon. I think that Bryan overrates what Barnes brought to the table for the Magic. I mean, he didn’t even play that much. I don’t think replacing him with Q-Rich is a bad move for them. Q was a good defender, and although he gained a lot of weight, he still is a good defender. He is strong and confident. I think Q may be a better fit than Barnes. I honestly think that on defense it will almost be the same, but on offense he will knock down more threes than Barnes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Magic may surprise a lot of people next year. Think about it: the Celtics are really old now, maybe this season was just a one-time comeback. The Heat are a powerhouse, but they only have three weapons (nucleair bombs, but still). I think Nelson could hurt Chalmers at the one, Q could play an important physical role guarding Lebron and Howard is better than Bosh. Plus, what if Bosh gets injured? In other words, I think next years final could well be Magic-Lakers again.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam Posted: Aug.23 at 5:02 pm
@ ike 311 : funny I thought the same thing (about Boozer) when I saw his picture and the Bulls grade

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Aug.23 at 5:52 pm
@Funkdoc… My point is that designing a team around players who only shoot 3′s and play no defense isn’t going to win a championship or even have a chance to play for one. At least Barnes gave them some measure of toughness on the floor. Now that team is soft, soft, soft…

  • Dave Posted: Aug.23 at 11:04 pm
Bryan, I don’t dispute that the Magic didn’t provide too many headlines with their offseason deals. The roster was overhauled a year ago, with mere tweaks made this summer. But your analysis is flawed. Check out http://www.magicbasketball.net/2010/08/23/some-inaccurate-criticisms-of-the-orlando-magic/ An offensive philosophy of surrounding Howard with shooters doesn’t preclude the Magic from being a strong defensive team (look to defensive efficiency ratings over the last three years–AND note that Barnes was only there for one year). Nor does it preclude them from winning in the regular season and go deep in the playoffs (again, see results from the last two years). Also, Stan just signed an extension.

  • Ruel Zyndrex Abila Posted: Aug.24 at 2:08 am
Bryan, I think you wrote too much about a team you don’t even know. Please do your homework. Research before you write. Dave and funkdoc are both right. If it hasn’t happened before it will never happen again? There’s always a first time for everything. A team will win a championship with the unconventional 1-in 4-out scheme one day. And it might be on this season. And by the way, Q isn’t soft. Perhaps you forgot about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoEiBd2NmCM Hayz.. may mga engot talaga sa mundo..

  • Ronald Posted: Aug.24 at 3:28 am
@Bryan Crawford: Yeah, that’s what I was thinking about the Bulls too. But a lot of people seem to put them as championship contenders. When, imho, in all honesty, this new Bulls team is a weaker version of the Utah Jazz from the last few years. I would have given them a chance to go for a deep playoff run in the old Leastern conference, but seeing how teams from the east have upgraded their talent, it seems far fetched that the new Bulls will do a lot. I have to disagree with the Magic grade because I think Matt Barnes has an overrated defensive game. I think he was placed before Mickeal Pietrus due to his greater offensive skills but not due to his defensive skills. And, JJ Reddick has an underrated game and the signing of Duhon is actually an upgrade over Nelson’s PG game. I watched a lot of games where Nelson just couldn’t see the open alley to Howard due to his height and game.

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Aug.24 at 12:55 pm
@Ruel… Technically speaking, if it hasn’t happened before then it would be sort of difficult to happen again considering it never happened in the first place.

  • LA Huey Posted: Aug.24 at 3:10 pm
It’s good to know I’m not the only one who thinks Matt Barnes is not second coming of Raja Bell.

  • Tyler Posted: Aug.24 at 5:42 pm
The Magic’s grade surprised me because losing Matt Barnes doesn’t mean anything cuz you have the same player in Pietrus if not better.
