JVG: Miami Heat Will Break Chicago Bulls’ Wins Record

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Every few years, a great team gets put together, and people get understandably excited about said team’s potential. And then, inevitably, those same people go a little too far with their excitement, and begin to predict immortality for that squad.

Last season, the Celtics’ newest employee went overboard with the prediction game. This year, it’s the Miami Heat’s turn to face what some (read: yours truly) would consider wholly unrealistic expectations.

Here’s Jeff Van Gundy saying the type of stuff that you just know has Michael Jordan and a host of former greats ready to come out of retirement again, and do something absolutely horrible to him.

From the Miami Herald:

The Heat not only will be great, but historically great. So predicts the co-lead NBA analyst for ABC/ESPN.

“They will break the single-season win record [of 72],” Jeff Van Gundy said. “And I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers’ 33-game [winning] streak [in 1971-72], as well. And only the Lakers have even a remote shot at beating them in a playoff series. They will never lose two games in a row this year.”

“They have put together a much better roster than anybody could ever have expected,” Van Gundy added. “There is now no good way to defend them. They are unguardable. They are indefensible. They are just too good and have added so much shooting and are so versatile that they will score at will. And with Erik Spoelstra coaching, they will be in the top three defensive teams in the league, as well. The other 29 teams better hope the lockout gets moved up a year.”

“Team John Dillinger” had better be ready to live up to the hype. For it will be unrelenting.

    they aint breakin it.

  • mick

    Bulls
    Jordan- GOAT
    Pippen- better game than Wade
Rodman- Could Defend Anyone. Anyone. Bosh can just score better.
Kukoc- Blew hot and cold, but better than any role player at miami
Ron Harper- 6th Man of the year award goes to…
Luc Longley- Could at least move, unlike Z.
Kerr=Mike Miller, but was at least tested under pressure.

    beating 72, don’t think so.

  • JTaylor21

@Mick do your self and family a favor and inhale a tank of cyanide. Pippen has a better game than Wade? where they do that at. Wade is a way better offensive player than pip could ever dream of being and wade can more than hold his own on D. The stupidity and ignorance on this website grows by each passing second.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Wow. JTaylor21, Mr. “F*ck the troops”, wants to talk about stupidty and ignorance on this website.

  • total scrotal implosion

Eboy, dont forget mr bean snitching on shaq, like that somehow wouldve helped him in his criminal case, what a bird. Innocent people dont payout millions to avoid trial. If youre innocent, let your lawyers handle it. But when you payout millions so it wont go to trial, that makes you look guilty. Why else would someone do that? Anyways, fakers are done getting rings

  • JTaylor21

@Yeah I said and what. I’m not gonna just foolishly believe that those guys are over there fighting for our “so-called freedom”. Is america being occupied by another country, NO, so what’s all these our freedom is under attack crap. The US didn’t give a sh*t when black people were slaves, what happened to their freedom. I’m not one of those gullible people who believes everything thing the government shows and tells them.

  • hammer

@eboy 2:26. Its ez 2 4get that the bulls were 1 win shy from having back 2 back 70 win seasons. And that the last year they were 2gether pip missed a big chunk of the 1st half of the regular season

  • Luis

Bosh never plays a full season, and they would stop playing hard as soon as they get home court advantage. And just about Every athlete now and back then has cheated on their wives for as long as their been sports just right now it is coming out sooner with all the media.

  • hammer

@mick 6:23. Ur right bout pip having more offense than pip but defense? Cmon man! Pip was a superior defender that wade could EVER imagine 2 b. And if u think about it what player n 2days nba is a better defender than pip ever was? Don’t say lebron! Now pip remember would domin8 games w/out scoring much. 2 put wade, pip and defense n the same sentence is just wrong

  • hammer

My bad on my last post. What I meant was wade having more offense than pip.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@JTaylor – man I have heard some stupid sh*t in my day but wow. It’s got nothing to do with being “gullible” and believing what the government tells you. It’s about having some damn respect for the people that put their lives on the line just so you can say some stupid sh*t like that. Oh, I guess our freedom wasn’t under attack on 9/11, or when the WTC was bombed the first time in the early 90′s, or the two bomb attempts, the shoe-bobmer and the Times Square bomber. How you gonna bring up slavery? That is just some stupid, second grade sh*t. I’ve had some dear friends lose their lives over there in Iraq and Afghanistan, all so idiots like you can say “f*ck the troops”. Awesome. You keep believing what you want in that fantasy land of yours.

On this site, we had some conversations over past few days, best big man in history etc.
Heat/Lakers come around and it all goes to pot. The amount of people simply looking to argue on here is simply unbelievable.
Personally, I wish the current Lakers team could be playing the 06 Heat, I would be MUCH more interested in that

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@JTaylor21: Get off the politics and racial crap, this is a basketball site. If we want to hear that junk, we can watch CNN. And Eboy, In America, you are innocent until proven guilty, and he didn’t get convicted, so get over it. And yes, winning championships does make people forget these athlete’s stupid things they do. Magic cheated on his wife, contracted AIDS, but nobody thinks about that when they think of Magic. They think, “best point guard of all time, and, 5-time NBA champion”. MJ was addicted to gambling, but nobody cares, because he is the best ever. And people look over Kobe’s accusations because all he has accomplished. And getting back to the topic, I don’t see them ever breaking the win record. They will screw around every season waiting for the playoffs because they will be playing the whole regular season trying not to get hurt. Yep, I said it.

  • Overtime

    Cosign the promise

  • CHIEF

Miami is as hyped up as Piranha 3D.
However Wade is a winner, much remains to be seen about the other two. I will say that Bosh is a volume shooter and less consistent on the block that people think. It’s a damn shame if they can’t win. Combined I think there is more talent and potential than any other team. Until someone brings out a zone d to stop them defenders have to give these guys way too much space to operate properly. Maybe 55 Jeff maybe. No one has a right to even try to beat 72.

  • T-Money

Hold on myles, on your argument avout these guys not being model citizens you brought up lebron not being married to savannah? wtf!? Americans are a funny bunch.

  • Tommy

There is no and i say no chance the heat will going to break the record of the bulls. maybe they will be the top seated team in the eastern conference and maybe they will have the best record overall but they will not defeat the celtics this year. there will be doubts if the celtics can handle the superfriends or orlando but when playofftime arives c’s will not lose to the magic or the heat! remeber this ;)

  • JTaylor21

@Enigmatic, I’m truly sorry from the bottom of my heart that u lost some dear friends in Iraq and Afghanistan, forgive my harsh words. All I’m saying is that all those incidents that you brought up where orchestrated by small group of people, so I don’t see the need in attack 2 different/innocent countries just in the hopes of killing a couple hundred terrorists. The brits/spaniards and others have all being attacked by terrorists before but none of them overreacted and started two wars. Also the reason I brought up slavery is to remind americans of a time when they were ones doing the enslavement of innocent people, which is one time in us history that people’s freedom were literally and figuratively under attack.

  • Tommy

sorry i forgot that even if the heat will go to the finals there is still number 24 who will beat them. LBJ has to wait until kobe retires to get his ring!

  • T-Money

Denial: theres no way that these three guys will take less money to play together and they all want to be together. / anger: what a f-ckin pu–y!! Can believe he did that to cleveland. He’ll never be jordan!! / Bargaining: yeah whatever, they have no bench and no shooters. / depression: they signed mike miller, haslem, big z, eddie house, arroyo and james jones? FML. / acceptance: LeBron James, d-wade and a 24/11 THIRD option are playing together for the next 5 years and theyre going to kill.

  • WangChung

@T-Money: Spot-on assessment. Personally, I’m in the FML stage.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

I’m going to let you guys in on a secret: Zydrunas Ilgauskas is notorious for being a selfish player with a bad attitude. This may come as a shock to those who haven’t watched the Cavs closely and he’s generally viewed as a nice guy by the media due to him selling DVD’s at a reasonsable price. Beyond that, he complained about not starting over Shaqtus, refused to jump more than half and inch and even demanded a trade to Washington at the deadline. Why do you think he was never in the pre-game photo ritual? That’s right – he wants all the glory for himself.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas will rip apart this Heat team.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

    H.A.T.E! What a summer u r having!

  • truthteller

I love how whenever people bring up valid answers in response to EBoy’s comments, he’s no where to be found or he ignores it and makes some more dumb comments. @The Promise: great point

  • Robb

    JVG is funny

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

You’re a dummy, truthteller, haven’t you figired that out yet? Damn, you’re stupid!!!! Lmao!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@truthteller: Yeah, I’ve noticed that too, I mean he overstepped his bounds when he attacked Kobe in a manner that was uncalled for and totally unrelated to what was being dicussed and what this thread is about. I’m not a huge Kobe fan by any means, I do think is arrogant and can be a whinebag, but you must respect the guys game, the numbers don’t lie.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Watch out, hes came out of hiding. Haha.

  • T-Money

the promise: who doesn’t respect his game? i know e-boy hates kobe but where has he questioned his ability to play?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@T-Money: I wasn’t necessarily saying Eboy questioned his ability, I was making a statement, that, if you don’t respect his game, I really doubt your knowledge of basketball, period. What I meant by the earlier post was, Eboy didn’t attack him as a player, but as a person, and there is no call for that.

  • bradley

Mick you make me laugh, lets not forget about the bulls all time great starting center Luke Longley, I mean I know Miami does not have someone with that elite factor at the big position.

  • JTaylor21

You guys are funny, you want eboy to respect kobe’s game and numbers but you clowns always downplay bron’s game and numbers. You can’t have your cake and eat it. Also what’s wrong with attacking kobe’s off the court ways; the dude LTed a girl, payed her off for it not to go to trial, falsely accused Malone of hitting on his crazy wife and tried to spill the beans on shaq. You guys pout when someone brings up those issues but turnaround and attack bron on being a douche, bad guy, etc. based on him just picking where he wants to play on tv.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    JTaylor basically answered for me.

  • http://celticknightk3@aol.com Celtic Knight

I seen somebody said MJ has that killer instinct but Wade and Lebron show some of that in some games. I would really have to agree with that. I would have to bring up Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kobe, Jerry West and Reggie Miller but the top two has to be MJ and Bird because of their clutch shooting close out games was so unmatched. I dare say Lebron and Wade will never come to any of those guys’ killer instinct. Miami will NOT beat Celtics or Lakers because you got to have the bench and the a lot of supporting cast. Defense will win you the chips people… Oh yeah like some people get very stupid to compare the New Heat to the Bulls 96 or Lakers 72 or how about Celtics 86. You look at the Bulls, Lakers and Celtics that I had mentioned they had a monster bench with much better starting 5. If you know how to play chess then you can see how important the pawns are to your backrow army. I think I made my point.

  • bradley

JT had a good point, Laker fans always seem to want to point the finger one way but not the other. You cant talk about LeBron off the court if your savior is Kobe. LeBron hasnt had to pay any girls off “yet” nor has he dismantled a dynasty. If you give Kobes numbers credit you must give Lebrons credit.
hahahah im still laughing at mick, i had to get all my friends over here to look at his nonsense. hahah pippen better than wade????? we all thought crack was over? id give you pippen>dirk or pippen> pierce. haaha but please MICK keep this comedy commin your the entertainment for 4 white kids.
Who in their right mind would rather live in Cleveland than Miami……. enough said

  • Ronald

It’s not that impossible is it? I mean, according to all Lebron defenders, Lebron single-handedly won 60+ games the last two years. So, Bosh+Wade+Scrubs should give you 10-20 extra wins? I think chemistry is overrated, especially when the team is young and doesn’t rely on pure execution i.e Spurs. However, the coaching IS suspect, but you never know.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Okay I’ve weighed up all the comments – So I’ll increase m prediction for the Heats winning totals for this season to 64. Bosh will still get injured however and Boston will attack them in game one like it’s a finals series.
I will understand completely if the Heat don’t win the chip this year. You’ll have to wait till June 2011 for the ‘I told you so’. Steve Nash for MVP.

  • Harry

    @Darce

If LeBron doesn’t average a triple double, it’s going to Kevin Durant

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    73 wins is a lot…

  • flipnoyce

Seriously Miami aint gonna beat that 72 wins from the bulls. Thats too much hallucination right there. Thats the only team in nba history who won championships without a true center. Prince James n Dwade must learn how to share the ball along with Bosh in order to achieve such goal. Until that day come then nothing is set in stone. Boston might have an older starting core but look at what we have for bench, much younger than Miami’s. So lets just all enjoy the summer and wait for the season to start.Peace!!!

  • Ali

Fellaz, we really need to just stick to Basketball talk. WE ALL! have skeletons and have done sh*t we’re not proud of. If you haven’t and your walk on water, you haven’t lived! None of us are the all mighty. Damn near EVERY nba baller has done shi* they ain’t proud of and some times have shamed their families, friends and fans. But that’s whats great about the U.S., we make mistakes, learn from them and we bounce back baby, we got that bounce back like no other country! We need to stop with the bashing cause from Jordan to Wilt to Kobe to Magic to Shaq to Dirk to Wade to LeBron to Pippen to Kidd to Barkley to Mullins and the list goes on and on and on…and we don’t even want to touch on the NFL and MLB, WUUUUWEEEE…Let’s stay classy and keep it on the basketball court fellaz!

  • T-Money

    Ronald: I don’t think they’re shooting for 86 wins. Just a hunch.

  • Kundai

damn alot of hate on this right here. Oh well, as for laker fans. im a lebron fan and i beleive you guys do give kobe the benefit of the doubt. Dang lebron only made by marketing decisions, peopel act liek he wasnt allowed to go to miami. He was a free agent he could have said i want to go to lakers for all i care. it was his choice so we cant bash him for that. I wont deny kobe is a beast either, im a fan of basketball so i respect his game, just what is annoying is denying someone like lebron his due. he is the best player in the league hands down as of right now because kobe’s numbers dont match up. as of right now. kobe had his time and now its lebrons. Just liek kobe has had his time with great HOF teammates its lebrons turn. jordan had great teammates, so did bird and magic all HOF teammates so we can’t hate on bron.

  • truthteller

@Eboy: If what your cheerleader JTaylor just said was what you were going to say, then you and him are both IDIOTS! Simple and plain.

  • truthteller

@Eboy” or maybe you and Jtaylor are the same people… either way, you’re both MORONS!

  • Kyle

Lakers Fans We beat yall with a less than average team and you think we can’t beat yall this year. Please enlighten me on how that makes sense.

  • flipnoyce

Does anybody here play real ball, or just playin balls with all talked? Anybody could be an analyst up in here but unless you play the real thing then there’s a big difference in opinion.
