Kwame Brown, Michael Jordan: Together Again

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

MJ’s front-office career in no way mirrors the success he enjoyed on the court. With the latest signing, Jordan gets another crack at trying to make something positive out of the most notorious mistake of his rocky journey as an NBA exec.

Kwame Brown, the former top overall pick, has reunited with his former tormentor, this time in Charlotte. The one-year experiment will reportedly cost MJ and the Bobcats $1.3 million.

The Charlotte Observer weighs in, and says this move is largely about addressing the team’s payroll. The journeyman Brown was inked with an eye on dumping Erick Dampier’s enormous contract.

Kwame is also expected to provide some defensive help for the Bobcats, though his agent oversells what he can do, as agents are wont to do:

“Most people would think (Brown) would run away from going back to play for Michael again. That’s not the case. Kwame welcomes it,” [Mark] Bartlestein said.

“Kwame is one of the best post defenders in the league, everyone agrees on that,” Bartlestein said. “Is he going to average 20 points a game? No, but he can be a terrific starting center in this league. The most important thing is to take it one step at a time and gain back the trust and respect in the league.”

All I know is that every interaction between Mike and Kwame in Charlotte should be televised.

    Biggest.Facepalm.Ever.
Did MJ lose a bet whose ramifications last a decade? If at first you don’t succeed, fail fail again.

  • andy

would i be wrong to forsee a half decent season from kwame? like…10 points…7 rebounds and a block a game?

  • Hussman25

I actually like this move… gives a chance for Kwame to make piece w/ playing for MJ. Everything in life always comes full circle. He didnt become what us fans thought he would have become tho… But @ the end of the day… w/ 8-9 yrs in the L, that’s more than most of us could wish to play. He’s made a nice amnt of money… Larry Brown will help him, coach him up and hopefully give him a few more years to add to the resume. Good Luck Kwame

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This signing is stupid as hell.
But like.. not really? If that makes sense?
Because the ‘Cats actually could use a guy like Brown in the paint.
I think every team in the League would take Kwame for 1.3million. No joke. Even the Lakers.
Him averaging like 7/7/1.5 isn’t impossible.

“I have missed the last second shot over 30 times. I have failed over and over again. And that is why i sucee…. Oh, who am i kidding?!!”

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

Dampier AND Kwame?! Wow, Mike sure LOVES a challenge. In this case, unsolveable ones.

  • Yesse

    This is way too funny.

  • underdog

“one step at a time and gain back the trust and respect in the league” – when exactly anyone has ever respected Kwame Brown in the League?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Michael Jordan’s making bold moves like David Kahn.

  • coconut

    What’s next? Another MJ comeback?

  • The Philosopher

    Co-sign Hussman25 @9:09 a.m. on many points.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Reunited and it feels so good…Boy it is a sad state that Dampier is in if a team chooses Kwame Brown over him. Yeah, I know its about the money when it comes down to it but that has to smart.

  • Sam

I’m just happy that he’s out of Detroit. Never cared for him on Washington, Lakers, Grizzlies, and even the Pistons I never cared for him. He’s a horrible player that never got any better from 2001.

He’s a big cheap body. I think this is being blown out of proportion.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

This has to be the first time in the history of the league that an NBA owner’s son played for his father’s team.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

“Kwame is one of the best post defenders in the league”? Is this true? One of the best 50?

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

I HATE reality TV, but I’d watch this one.

  • Ali

Bartlestein is delusional, Hahaha, snap back to reality baby! I know you gotta rep your clients to the fullest but be for real man.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    May they stay together forever.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Kwame actually is one of the best post defenders in the league. Y’all need to watch dude play. He’s horrible on offense, but he is very, very effective on defense, particularly one-on-one defense. Not much of a shot blocker though.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

MJ seems to be in the habit of grabbing problem players and giving them to Brown to sort out (see: Tyrus Thomas). I’m hoping this works out for Kwame and Tyrus also. I like this move, they are a team built on D and their scoring will come from the wings more than anything. I’ll be interested to see what happens with Dampier(i.e. whether they re-sign him after waiving him).

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

…and they just got Kwame to stop twitching from what mike did to him last time. That agent is a fool, is there such a thing as a “terrific starting center” that cant average 20 mins a game?

  • Javy

Why….Why…..Why….Like my Mom used to say “Why do you hang around with these people”….why…why…why!!!
    On a serious note: why….why….why!!!
MJ, you are better than that, c’mon!

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

For all those that are wondering, yes I am rolling over in my grave right now.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

And no im not dead. My coffin just doubles as a tumble room. Good for rainy days and Kwame Brown signings.

  • Nashty

Feel like Mike is being really stubborn here. I think he wants to try and justify taking Kwame originally..

  • JTaylor21

Maybe Chuck was right when he says “MJ done lost his DAMN mind!

  • Toni Kukoc

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAx100

  • unrel

MJ!.. just because Phil said “Here kitty kitty kitty” to Kwame’s face.. doesn’t mean he’s a Bobcat.. it means he plays like a… nevermind.. A SPEC-TACULAR MOVE BY MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!

  • PlanetAsia14

    Best of luck Kwame!

  • T-Money

Spot on, Allenp. Kwame, like Jason Collins, is an excellent post defender who doesn’t block shots. I’m surprised Miami didn’t throw the vet min at him. I fully expect them to try to snatch Damps.

  • Coney Islander

He’s like that that one turd that refuses to be flushed.

  • http://koponyeg.hu/jatek/hfifb211 T-MAC

    Let’s go Bobcats!!! :)

  • Shem

If kwame brown was drafted 20th, people would love this move. He is a bust, but is a decent center that can play D. I wouldn’t go as far as one of the best centers in the L but he’s a good defender

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kwame will have his best season under Team Jordan. BOOK IT!!

  • Future Guy

Well, if the ‘Cats keep Dampier they’ll have the two best centers in the WNBA.

  • Klemperer

    gain back?

  • total scrotal implosion

I have to mention when kwame stole someones cake and threw it on the sidewalk. And phil said he wasnt surprised

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Some of y’all suck at reading comprehension. The agent said Kwame was one of the “best post defenders” in the league. Not one of the best centers.
Kwame was a good defender for the Lakers. He was a good defender for Detroit and Memphis. He is very physical, and is good at positioning. Dude actually could have been good on offense if he hadn’t quit working and was stronger mentally.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com Masr

Lol at future guy. But no honestly I think Stephen A. summed it up best when he said “Kwame Brown, God bless him is a scrub!”

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Personally I think Kwame, as has been noted, is a VERY good post defender. Great strength. Truly awful on offense. Terrible hands.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jay

How is Kwame Brown on a team and Allen Iverson is not? The Bobcats could have offered AI that 1.3 million he already said hes willing to play any role, Coach Brown could talk him into coming off the bench and also say hey if u play well I’ll start you, and he would actually do it. AI and Stephen Jackson would be one of the most exciting back courts in the league, the Bobcats would get National TV games, sell tickets, jerseys and grab the 6th seed in the EAST!!!!!

  • C.A

Did Kwame Brown just get signed for more money than Shaq?! Wow….

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Jay is proof that the kids need to go back to school in a hurry.

  • Tyler

Never thought I’d see the day when Kwame gets more than Shaq lol and as far as signing him over AI i would do it in a heartbeat. AI is a head coaches nightmare

  • total scrotal implosion

I doubt shaq got less than kwame. They both got the vet minimum and snaqs been in the league since 92 so id bet he got a few gs more

  • Spetsnaz

@Jay – The reason Kwame has a contract is because he knows his role on a team, even if its just riding the bench. AI still thinks hes a superstar and the no.1 option.

  • barnabusb

I still can’t figure out why Kwame was in the dogouse on a HORRIBLE Detroit team last year.

  • Izzy

Yes AI isn’t signed yet for several reasons, one being that even if he acknowledges his scoring champ/superstar days are over (verbally at least) he still thinks he should be treated like a star.
But at least he WAS a star. My mom is more of a star than Kwame has even been. AI can at least still score, we saw flashes of brilliance last season but i’m afraid the liabilities outweigh the assets HUGELY in his case. Kwame? Mehhh…not really a risk on vet minimum salary really?

  • Shem

@Allenp: Read between the lines, we all know Kwame isn’t the best center in the L. Get serious, I said he was a decent C that can play D. When I said I wouldn’t go as far as the best C I meant defensive center. Just thought nobody would assume I meant the best C..

  • Ali Saadat

Who’s hands would you rather have, Kwame’s or Rondo’s?

  • T-Money

BY THE WAY, how in the hell is Darko 4 mil better than Kwame?

  • darko

i got “potential” yes 4 Million of it more
    i love david kahn

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

MJ got Kwame because he was reminded of his favourite defensive minded team mate…thats right, Bill ‘the butcher’ Wennington.

  • JTaylor21

Ali, Rondo’s hands are twice the size of Kwames which is says a lot about rondo and kwame.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

MJ musta saw sumphin’ special in the kid back in his D.C. days… All jokes aside, maybe the (vet) Kwame can prove people wrong, and have a decent season.. With the loss of Chandler the Bobcats are gonna need some rebounds and toughness..

  • Yesse

Maybe MJ wants to prove everyone wrong after 9 years and tries to make Kwame an all-star.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

quote of the year: “Kwame is one of the best post defenders in the league, everyone agrees on that,”

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Ya know, I think “one of the best post defenders in the league” might be an exaggeration, but he is a solid post defender. Not many dudes left in the league with his size. For $1.3 per I don’t see this as a bad signing.
