Michael Illitch Wants to Own All Detroit Sports Teams

The dude’s family already owns the Tigers and Red Wings, so he figures, why not throw the Pistons into the mix? The Free Press reports: “Sports and pizza boss Michael Ilitch said today he wants to buy the Detroit Pistons and move the team to a new arena in downtown Detroit. The Ilitch family already owns the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Red Wings. The Ilitch bid is for the entire Palace Sports & Entertainment organization, not just for the basketball team itself. If successful, that means that the Ilitches would also own the Palace of Auburn Hills arena, the DTE Energy Music Theatre and other aspects of the Palace network. In a statement issued this morning, Ilitch said he and his family are committed to building a new arena in downtown even if their bid for the Pistons fails. The new arena would serve as a home for the Red Wings, which continue to play their games at the aging Joe Louis Arena. ‘No one should get too excited just yet, because this is the first step in what could be a long process,’ the Ilitch statement read. ‘There is a lot of due diligence to take place, and who even knows if the Pistons would accept any potential future offer. But I can tell you that we are serious about this, we’ll be aggressive in the process, and we’re going to take a real hard run at it because it makes sense for our organization.’”

He wants to own all Detroit sports teams? What about the Lions? This article made no mention of them.

Now, I know this Illitch fella is probably a whole lot smarter than me, and has a bunch of loot to boot. But investing all this money in a has-been city? Perhaps things in Motown are looking up. Reverse white flight, anyone?

Ya..I guess he figures the Lions play like a Pee Wee football team..Pistons,Tigers,and red wings really are good investments in whatever market there in.

My man didn’t even acknowledge the Lions! Can’t blame him at all. lol

Whoever buys them, I just hope they stay in Detroit. The family seems pretty committed to the area and re-investing in it, so it would be great for the team and the city for this deal to work out. I’m not sure if the Lions are for sale or not, but considering how they’ve played the last several season, a) why would anybody want them and b) they must be pretty undervalued right about now.

Sure as long as he doesn’t want to play on all of them… sometimes I wonder if Mark Cuban wants to suit up sometimes, I could imagine him sizing himself up to JKidd and thinking “yeah, I could make that pass in to Dirk better than that…”

Dude, I would love for Illitch to buy the Pistons. He’s a great owner. I would hate to see thm move though…the Palace is pretty new and the late Bill Davidson paid for it out of pocket, so they owe nothing on it. Additionally, when I go to sporting events, I like to keep my likelyhood of being shot, beaten, and/or robbed below 88%…Who wants to go downtown Detroit???

To clarify, I mean to move to Downtown Detroit…
