Nuggets To Sit Down with Melo

by Ryne Nelson

As soon as the Denver hires a new GM, the Nuggets and Carmelo Anthony are expected to have a frank discussion about Melo’s future with the franchise.

From Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post:

Nuggets management is expected to sit down with Melo some time after the team names a general manager, which it is expected to do next week. Former Suns executive David Griffin is the leading candidate.

This should clear up some of the hot air surrounding the situation. The Nuggets have tried to retain their star by offering a three-year, $65 million contract extension (which Melo has yet to accept). The franchise’s best option might be to trade him for the best available offer.

The Post also reports that Chauncey Billups and other teammates have expressed their support while Melo mulls his options.

Sure, that’s what the Cavs did and look where that got them.

  • Boy Sanchez Posted: Aug.21 at 12:50 pm
    Knicks, Magic, Bulls. Pick one.

  • wtf Posted: Aug.21 at 1:14 pm
$65 million contract extension (which Melo quickly declined).
he didnt decline it, he just hasnt signed it yet

  • The Seed Posted: Aug.21 at 1:32 pm
They need to trade Melo and getting something back for him, its that plain and simple. Melo is going to the East to ruin The B Team chances at a ring. Melo on the Bulls or Magic is East CHAMPIONS. BOOK IT!!

    I’ll jab carmelo

  • NBA Kid Posted: Aug.21 at 1:44 pm
Vince and Pietrus for Melo and a scrub

  • MusketeerX Posted: Aug.21 at 1:58 pm
Curry, Gallo, Chandler, First round pick. An expiring, two guys whose contracts are up in the next two year (and talented), as well as a first round pick.

  • Earl Posted: Aug.21 at 2:06 pm
Wow, what a good idea… talk to your player BEFORE he leaves?? :)

  • PatrickJane Posted: Aug.21 at 2:22 pm
He didn’t decline the extension, it is still on the table and the reason why he hasn’t signed it yet is why us nuggets fans are so worried. Get your facts straight Ryne!

Melo’s in the EXACT same situation as Kevin Garnett in 2007. NO franchise will give up a lot of assets to just RENT Melo for one season, when he can opt out and walk. If I’m Melo, I’m like, no trade to where I want to play, no extension Stanley. If the Nuggets are stubborn about it, then just play the season out and walk for nothing.

  • NotebookNick Posted: Aug.21 at 2:34 pm
If Melo goes to Chicago, the East becomes VERY interesting this year.

  • NBA kid Posted: Aug.21 at 2:34 pm
musketeer x, the knicks can’t trade their first round pick, every team must have at least one every two years, knicks didn’t have one last year

  • ld Posted: Aug.21 at 3:01 pm
When is LeBron gonna say that he wants Melo to stay in the west just like he said about Chris Paul.

  • Red Posted: Aug.21 at 3:09 pm
Melo to the Bulls, game over. Knicks got nothing, Amare ain’t holding up for much longer.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Aug.21 at 3:10 pm
Uh, you think NotebookNick. But no way in hell do the nuggets give up Melo for Loser Deng and a draft pick. Melo’s too valuable for that.

  • NBA kid Posted: Aug.21 at 5:01 pm
cosign jtaylor, nuggs will want either a big expiring contract (Vince) or a younger player to add to their core (bass, pietrus, gortat or Anderson)

  • LA Huey Posted: Aug.21 at 6:41 pm
I really do hope Melo stays out West (not necessarily Denver). The East has Magic, Heat, Celtics (with the Bulls waiting in the wings) while the West has the Lakers and…some kids and old folks throwing rocks at the throne.

  • Nodoubt223rd Posted: Aug.21 at 8:30 pm
“Curry, Gallo, Chandler, First round pick.” Knicks can’t trade anymore first round draft picks. Teams cannot trade away first round picks in back to back years.

  • ai come back Posted: Aug.21 at 8:43 pm
luol deng taj gibson james johnson two first rounds lolol

  • Anton Posted: Aug.21 at 8:49 pm
This will be a bad custody hearing.
“Can I take my Birdman with me?”

  • dma Posted: Aug.21 at 10:29 pm
melo on the magic would be ridiculous. Vince, Orton, Bass/Peaches/Gortat and a first would be a good start – an expiring, a prospect, and a decent player with decent contract. Or just trade him for Arenas……

  • omphalos Posted: Aug.21 at 11:41 pm
I don’t mind if Melo goes East, it leaves the West in the hands of the Thunder and Blazers in the future.

  • tavoris Posted: Aug.21 at 11:58 pm
Melo looks fat like Antoine Walker in that pic

  • Eduardo Posted: Aug.22 at 7:26 am
Melo will be getting a call from LeBron James very soon to say that it will be better for Melo’s career to stay West, just like LBJ did with Chris Paul.

  • DROPITLIKEITSHOT Posted: Aug.22 at 7:52 am
I would love to see Melo on the Knicks, but watch out for my Lakers.Odom,Sasha & Caracter who the Nuggets wanted in the draft???

  • 6marjons Posted: Aug.22 at 4:01 pm
if denver are serious about keeping him why dont they trade some other players for say chris paul? tony parker?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Aug.22 at 4:30 pm
You can’t question how serious the Nuggets, as a franchise, have been about staying under the luxury tax the past two season. Heck, the Nuggets even booked the WWF at their home arena during the 2009 playoffs. Memba that? lol

If Carmelo Kiyan Anthony TRULY wants to be a Knicka, then there can be no so called list of teams to compete with the Knicks trade offer(s). Make sure Bret Bearup errr I mean the Nuggets new GM duly notes at the sit down that Carmelo ONLY signs an extension if he’s traded to the New York Knicks. Any other team not named the Knicks that makes a trade for Melo, will only be renting him for 1 season, and let’s be real, no team gives up a great package to rent for 1 season. Denver would then be facing two choices: take what the Knicks are offering, OR Melo walks to the Knicks for FREE while have a great laugh with Spike Lee. Denver’s only real leverage is the threat of a new CBA/Lockout…is that really the franchise to stay with, one who uses threats to get you to stay/re-sign? Come home Carmelo & LaLa, come home.

  • The Seed Posted: Aug.23 at 8:26 am
He’s in a New York state of mind, Knicks are BAAACCCKK, next year.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Aug.23 at 10:57 am
*Denver would then be facing two choices: take what the Knicks are offering, OR Melo walks to the Knicks for FREE while HAVING a great laugh with Spike Lee. And yes, I too am in a New York state of mind, and @The Seed I agree, the Knicks are back baby!

  • dNYCe Posted: Aug.23 at 3:10 pm
I agree, Seed! Been waiting for a decade for this.
