Pierce to Retire a Celtic, Play Overseas

In a CSN interview, P-Double says he’ll likely retire from the NBA when his four-year. $62 million deal (via Celtics Blog): “I think this is going to be it for me. After these three or four years that I’m going to play, then I think that’s going to be it for the game of basketball. I put so much into this game. As far as retiring from the NBA, I think I will be done after this contract because eventually I want to go overseas and play and live for a couple of years. That’s why this is a big contract for me, knowing I’m going to retire a Boston Celtic. I want to go to either Italy or Greece for a year. I think I want to be able to bring my family over to just kind of share a different experience overseas for a couple of years, before I settle into retirement.”

    Let me guess Tokyo Apache? (jokes but really this team is coming up a lot on SLAM lately) Paul Pierce should play in the ANBL – £10 for anyone who can guess what league that is.

    Pierce could probably still be good. His game has never relied on athleticism, quickness, or hops. He’s just a crafty type player. Guys who never rely on athleticism usuaully last the longest. Like Stockton, Cassell, Magic, etc

    Well if Fat Antoine Walker could last a couple of games overseas I’d imagine Greece or Italy would take a chance on PP. Also can we moderate the spam comment above me?? I’ve seen it posted a couple of times already…

    @Jb, Antoine played in Puerto Rico after the NBA barely lasting two months. Not really “overseas” as most people know it.

    @Jb…: Come on man… What’s the problem? Is it bad to have aging superstars in my country?? OK serious now, if you’ve been in Greece for some years and watch sports here you would understand why I’m joking with this… We are one of the countries where older soccer or basketball players choose to come and end their careers. And it’s funny because every time a big (and old) name is announced to sign in a Greek team, basically in soccer, people start to act like crazy about it, like Jesus himself signed for their team! And the result? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. OK, Childress was a helluva surprise when he signed with Olympiakos and he did played great. But that happened just once. All the other players are just names with history who can provide nothing else but minor help to their teams, a lot of money to the owners from the tickets and the illusion that we have a big league with big names. Again, I’m talking mostly about our soccer league but you can see the similarity here too.

    I never hated this guy until KG got to the celtics. Then he changed to the “we-ain’t-coming-back-to-LA”, wheelchair tantrums but I guess the comments prior are right, Pierce doesn’t depend on athletism. Kobe is adjusting to getting old so he’s learning to play like him.
    What about the other youngsters on the celtic’s, when will they retire?
    Instead of Gatorade they should have oxygen masks and IV liquid. Just a thought!!

    @newzealanderinlondon: the answer is is the Australian National Basketball League. Michael NZ didn’t correctly answer it by just mentioning the Breakers. Neither did Coggie13. So I want my £10 thanks! btw do ppl really call it ANBL? i’ve always just heard it as nbl. if they were going to make it anbl, should actually call it ANZBL….

    Italy would be best for him because that leauge is a lot worse than the one in greece. I think more players should take that route again. After they retire get a few bucks playinf overseas. Shaq shouldn’t do that though he should join the.. you guessed it.. harlem globetrotters.

    PP should think on spain. The ACB (spanish league) is the best european basketball league. We´re world champions, european champions and 2nd in the olympics. I suggest Real Madrid, PP
