Ron Ron: “I partied hard as hell”

Fanhouse’s Sam Amick sits with Ron Artest and takes the pulse of his summer. Lots of good stuff here, including when Sam asks Ron Ron about his post-championship hangover…

It’s been fun — a little too much fun. I partied hard as hell. I was gone. But the good thing is that I worked out (during that time). Last year at this time I was 270-something (pounds), and this year I’m 255, 258. I’m totally focused. Like this (cranberry and vodka drink in his hand) is probably my second drink in like a month, and usually in the summertime I get (his drinking) in. I get it in every night. But I’m going to come in at about 245, 240 this year, and get back to that Defensive Player of the Year weight.

    Talk about making a difference in a team.
    I love how he plays like he’s crazy on the court.
    Well you came and put your face on my elbow!!!I don’t kwow what happened!! I still remember how Rondo came to meet his elbow on a personal basis.

    Jajaja…I am so happy for him!!
    It shows that within his craziness, he has grown a lot!!!Congrats and make us proud beating Los Tres Amigos this year!

    Yea it was funny when a yr ago people were saying the Lakers title hopes were crushed bc of Ariza’s departure and he was gonna blossom into a star in Houston. UPDATE: Artest was a huge upgrade of Ariza and his twin was drafted by the Lakers

    Nice to see he’s focused on becoming that great defensive stopper again. He seems to realize it’s o.k. to party some, but is focused on getting back to business.

    must be frustrating to the athletes who work so hard and follow such strict eating/sleeping/training schedules to see others like ron ron doing so well while also f*cking off so much. imagine if all the ron rons had kobe’s/ray allens/etc.’s commitment. didn’t ron recently say that he pretty much played NBA ball drunk for a couple seasons? dude is at the opposite end. crazy individual.

    Ron Artest is good on defense but a little overrated. Ask Shane Battier — he knows defense. Break it down play by play and Ron isn’t as good as you would like to believe. He has size, strength and good insticts but there’s many other things he does not pay attention to. Not hating. I’m a Laker fan and I’m just sayin…

    @nick… it depends on what you’re looking at on d.. he’s a great position defender with a strong base.. low, center of gravity, etc.. of course no great defender can shut down a great scorer for a whole series.. but look at what he did against durrant.. he kept KD off balance.. he did the same with the truth for a few games.. that’s great defensive positioning.. similar to the way kendrick perk is successful against d.howard

    I honestly believe we’re gonna see a major improvement in ron’s play this upcoming season. i think the championship victory gave him confidence and made him realize how much success the Lakers can have if he plays right every game

    @ Unrel, Thank you. It seems you know about basketball. There are different types of defense: high flying defense, cutting lanes like Ariza used to do and then you have the most fundamental which is the low, strong base which is what Artest has.
    The best defender which combined all maybe not at a 100% but even like that, was MJ, which combined off the ball defense, high flying and low base.
    That’s why I admired his a*****ss.
    If you ask me which of the defenses you want for your team, I say Artest’s defense. Strong and don’t jump for faikes! Obviously that’s considering Mj is no longer in the league!.

    @Unrel I agree that Ron keeps a low base and he plays great position defense. His strength and quick strong hands really bothered KD and esp PP who is used to bullying smaller quicker defenders. But I think Ron has lapses in defense, most evident in the transition from offense to defense when his team misses a shot. He usually stands around or even worse tries to go for the steal while the other team gets into transition instead of getting back and meeting his man at the three point line. His build also makes it hard for him get around screens with ease. But he is still way better than most of the perimeter players so all this is really nitpicking. If he gets down to 245 it should be scary for opposing 2′s and 3′s now that he had Matt Barnes to spell him. (and FYI Barnes isn’t a great defender — just a less annoying, more athletic, more skilled “Machine”.
