UPDATE: Shannon Brown Re-Signs With the Lakers

UPDATE: Brown’s agent confirms that he’ll be back in Laker Purple & Gold for a couple of more years: “The Lakers and free agent point guard Shannon Brown have agreed on a two-year contract worth $4.6 million, Brown’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Thursday morning. ‘Shannon could have made more money somewhere else, but I think he really wanted to play this out with the Lakers,’ Bartelstein said. ‘They’ve won it [all] two years in a row and the chance to win three straight [championships] doesn’t come around every day.’ Brown is likely the last piece of the Lakers’ offseason puzzle. Though the negotiations took longer than expected, he and the team had expressed a desire to work a deal. Brown strongly considered the New York Knicks and New Orleans Hornets.”

According to his agent (talking to the NY Post), the Knicks will lose out in the Shannon Brown “sweepstakes”: “The Knicks’ chances of landing free agent shooting guard Shannon Brown are just about over. Mark Bartelstein, Brown’s agent, told The Post the Lakers guard is ‘leaning’ toward returning to the Lakers to go for a ‘three-peat.’ Brown is expected to make his final decision Thursday. The Knicks, according to a source, offered Brown a one-year contract as they moved to protect their 2011 salary cap for a run at Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks offered Brown the full $2.7 million that they are under the cap. The Lakers have offered the fourth-year guard less per season, but multiple years. ‘The Knicks did a great job selling Shannon on everything and their vision for him,’ Bartelstein said. ‘They did a great job but the chance to go back and win a third championship for the Lakers is a tough thing to pass up. He’ll make a final decision (Thursday).’ The Knicks were leaning toward making the super-athletic Brown their starting shooting guard, but also saw him as a solid sixth man.”

This guy is worth a lot of money – he has time though.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

He clearly has more sense about him than Farmar does. To ring or not to ring (while riding both the play of Kobe/Gasol and the bench), that is Shannon’s question.

  • http://slamonline.com Anjoe Intal

Yeah right. That run for three-peat would be big in his desicion

hopefully Jackson will find some minutes for this guy. Won’t be easy.

  • http://sdfjklf.com Jukai

Oh well thank god, he’d be a terrible person if he went for the money and the acknowledgment!!!

As a Lakers fan I would rather see him get more minutes and play for Knicks. Instead of playing less minutes with the Lakers eventhough I like his game, its improving each season in NBA.

The Lakers off-season was a HUGE success after they re-signed Derek LEAD DOG Fisher. No Fish, no chips.

  • Javy

If we get him, then it’s an extra, if not then good luck….he’ll play more with the Knicks.
He’s not that great in a half court set.
I did love his dunks and athletism but only on the open court.
We’re loaded now and ready….Watch as DEFENSE becomes our train to ride this season.
It will be low points but geared towards DEFENSE!

    Lakers Highlight Reel….

  • John

    PG- Blake
    SG- Brown
    SF- Barnes
    PF- Odom
    C- Ratliff

lol Lakers bench is better than the T-Wolves starting lineup

  • http://lakers.com Stu

@iamorange4ever – fish and chips is an awesome title for a slam feature on d-fish, well played..

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

Oh? Hope tmac will be a laker.

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

Shannon brown resign. Then go for sign and trade vujacic for tmac. Just saying though.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Knicks shouldn’t have given Amare Max. Maybe $18Mil instead of the full $20Mil+. That way they could have invested more in other players like Brown. 1 year contract for the Knicks? The guy is worth more than that. They’ve got no one at shooting guard at the moment.

Lakers should go for TMac now.

    Thank you Stu.

  • Drew

Alright, now the Lakers can move on to sign Ebanks and Caracter.

  • kh

I love the decision. Rings over $.

  • dsleepy

lakers look really good. easily the best in the west and i would pick them to win it all again this year. and then the kobe vs mj comparison-makers will go bonkers

  • Bruno

    what drew said

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Why is this such a big deal? Brown’s a good player, but Shannon will be their eighth man and third guy off the bench. Please.

  • Adrianc513

Miami Who? Lakers 2011 Champs Best team in the Leauge.

  • T-Money

Moose: more likely their 9th or even 10th man. Barnes, Blake and LO are ahead of him. Sasha subbed in before him deep in the playoffs. He may not see the floor this year.

  • SWIFTboy

@ Moose. It’s not a BIG deal. However, during a long season with injuries and back-to-backs the 8th, 9th, and 10th guys can make a difference. Plus, they didn’t have to pay him over his value.

  • total scrotal implosion

All this coming from the same ppl who gassed up chris mihm

  • LA Huey

Not a BFD at all. He’ll get a SLAMadamonth or two in garbage time.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Barring injury, the Lakers are way too deep not to three-peat. And this is coming from a Bulls fan.

  • nastierthanu

People aren’t looking at this from a classroom angle. He’s an athletic 2 learning from one of top 5 greatest 2′s of all time in the prime. Why not stick around add a few tricks to your bag and not have to overwhelm your body with massive amouts of wear and tear. He’ll get the dough and the starting spot and when he does the world will see what he’s learned

  • http://google c_cantrell

awesome for the lakers.. i kinda wanted to see him go elsewhere honestly tho.. the guy has so much potential and is amoung the top 5 most athletic guys in the L.. he is super underated.. does anyone remember his 27 point 10 rebound game when he took over the starting duties due to kobes injury? thats pretty good for a team with pau, bynum, odom, and artest (just to name a few).. tho he would have really shined in new york i cant blame him for wanting to return n go for a 3 peat with phil n the guys.. but in 2 years when his contract is up hel be free and u can book it that he will have many options of where he wants to play.. potential.. potential.. potential..

  • T-Money

So Shannon opted out of 2.15 M and got 2.2 M?! Damn, Mitch don’t play! / enigmatic: depth is overrated. shannon won’t play in the postseason with an 8-man rotation. the 3 guys coming off the bench will be LO Blake and Barnes. Which is better than LO Brown and Farmar but not THAT much better.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

He took a relatively little less money for one year, but more money for the term of the contract. He will also get a whole lot less playing time. I understand wanting to stay in LA and have a legit shot at a ring, but as an athlete/competitor seems like he may have been better off showcasing his talents and earning a bigger contract and a bigger role in two years. I better understand Farmar wanting to go out and actually play the game he loves and showcase his talents versus Brown wanting to sit the bench and watch his team win a championship. Maybe he’s not confident in his own skills that he could earn a bigger contract next year? Maybe he’s satisfied riding the pine and not competing – at his age and stage of career it’s hard for me to understhand.

  • Overtime

Is it the biggest deal of the summer? No. But its fairly important to the Lakers, whatever way you look at it, he can come in to give Kobe a rest and be servicable while they look inside. He’s a boost to fans as hes a favourite already, and whatever way you look at it, his dunks can actually change the flow of the game

  • the downtown brown clown

go to the knick *** @#*% it!

  • Jordan

The Lakers are defintely going to three peat. That team got so much better in the offseason and I think they can reach the 70+ win mark. If Bynum stays healthy

  • henry

knicks really saw him as a starting sg?

  • http://google c_cantrell

    uhh yeah…. duh..

  • hobbes

welcome back Brown! if kobe hadnt said that one more ring than shaq quote, shaq back to LA to finish his career would be the sickest and it almost 200% put the ring in the pocket, but it aint never happened shiiiit…

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

Trade sasha for tmac though. Hahaha.

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

Sign and Trade sasha for tmac though. Hahaha.

Some of ya’ll don’t get it. The man has bounced around from team to team almost his whole career after being drafted by the Cavs in 06′, he has done stints in D-League of all places! If your a NBA multi millionare and taking care of your business and have the right people around you a mil here and a mil there isn’t gonna worry you. Playing on a team that has chemistry and winning is what it’s about. You could be a 10 or 20 min, per game guy or a superstar, bottom line is you want to win. What these bench type players gotta figure out is, do you want try and go to a team struggling to win games and play alot and deal with losing or contribute to a proven winner and establish yourself that way, on the bench or otherwise. He’ll get his normal 20 minutes per game he got last year. He played all 82 for the first time in his career guys. Phil will get him on the court, trust!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Great move Brown, you never know, you could end up finishing your career as a Laker. If he continues to improve I see a long term deal with Lakers plus why play one year for NY, then they might let you go. BOOK IT!!

  • Jake

I don’t think that Steve Blake is getting more playing time than Shannon this year. He’s shown too much improvement to be glued to the bench all season. There’s at least 30 bench minutes to be had in the back court.
