Bulls, Nuggets Discussing Carmelo Anthony Deal?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Carmelo Anthony is reportedly interested in playing for the Chicago Bulls. Not surprisingly, the Bulls would welcome him with open arms, should a reasonable deal for his services become available. And that’s where the trouble begins.

According to numerous media outlets, Chicago and Denver are having talks involving ‘Melo, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and perhaps some draft picks.

From the Sun-Times:

According to multiple reports, the Bulls and Denver Nuggets have talked about a trade that would send the high-scoring small forward to Chicago to form another Big Three along with Derrick Rose and Carlos Boozer. The Bulls would prefer to build a deal around forward Luol Deng, but the Nuggets are reluctant to take on Deng’s contract, which has four years and roughly $15 million left.

A source said the Nuggets would be more interested in a deal built around center Joakim Noah, but the Bulls are trying to decide whether such a deal interests them — especially considering Deng probably still would have to be included to make the deal work under the rules of the salary cap.

Now, the reality is no one seems to truly believe that a deal will be worked out anytime soon — if ever — between the two sides.

Landing Anthony would obviously be a major coup for the Bulls’ front-office, but what they’re offering back to the Nuggets doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense: Deng is a financial albatross, and as good as Noah is, would any GM be able to justify trading Carmelo for him?

The Carmelo Anthony Saga doesn’t appear ready to conclude anytime soon.

I love Noah, but he’s already 25 and it’s not like his upside is ridiculous, anytime you get the chance to add an nba superstar in a trade for 2 role players, you should do it.

  • robz

dz is wat ive been waiting for…GO TO BULLS MELO

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

As weird as this sounds, I think the Bulls would be worse off with Melo in the mix and without Noah…..and I hate Noah.

  • jayfromdachi

NO!!! Noah shouldnt b traded even if its for melo deng taj n james n a pick or two should b good enough but Noah is 1 of da important pieces for a chip

  • robz

dnt hella trade noah…juz trade korver, joe alexander, pargo, keith bogans and kurt thomas dyr useless

  • Red

Eobz that’s the stupidest trade idea i’ve heard yet =|

  • Love4Humanity

They should find a way to keep Noah. Korver has to stay too because he’s their shooter. Kurt Thomas is their only veteran presence. Hopefully, the Nuggets will bend and take Luol Deng. They’re going to be rebuilding anyway after Melo’s gone.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Deng is only on a $15M over 4 years contract? WTH? I thought it was more like $15M a season for him.

  • mattydchi

While Melo would certainly be exciting it doesn’t fit the role of the team and the org. Why do you bring in a defensive coach and trade your best defensive presence, especially after paying a PF $80M that plays no D? Also don’t discount Jerry Reinsdorf’s preference for “good” guys and not forget “Headband Gate” with Ben Wallace (what a terrible move that was). While I’d love Melo’s scoring and game with D Rose, I don’t think it happens. That is unless Noah isn’t included…

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i want him to stay West.. Here’s my idea.. Melo + filler to the Clippers, Kaman and Gordon to Nuggets.. Both will remain playoff teams, Melo goes to a big market. Also good for Lala’s career. He has a solid playoff team with Davis and Griffin. Nuggets stay as playoff team too while building future in Kaman, Gordon. Win-win situation.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Nuggets won’t take Deng for sure..

  • The D Train

Your are right, Eboy. Thibs is a defensive coach. Cannot see him trading his defensive anchor, even if it nets them Melo Man Ace. If the Bulls did that deal, who the flirck would start at the 5 for them? And do you seriously think Thibs would want to field a team that starts Boozer and Melo, two guys not exactly renowned for their defensive efforts/abilities? I said the same thing during the Lebron stuff…I do not think the Bulls can, will, or should trade Noah for anyone other than another defensive-minded, rebounding center. And since you’re not trading Dwight Howard for him, it’s probably safe to say that Noah is more likely to sign his contract extension to stay in Chicago next to Rose, than he is to be traded to anyone, for anyone.

  • al29

@hursty: Yeah, it’s actually 50 million over the next 4 years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com niQ

*yawn. I haven’t clicked on the past few Melo stories cause I knew it was all just rumors…

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i think the management will trade noah even if thibs is against it. i mean Melo is Melo, and i can sure find someone to fill the void Noah left, sooner than i could find a talent like Melo.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

al29 – cheers. Knew those numbers couldnt be right. I remember the drama when he and Iggy were going through their extensions.

  • hammer

Stats don’t tell the whole story of what noah means 2 the bulls. He’s a hustler,an energy player that actually does play d. He’s jerome junkyard dog williams reincarnated. I used 2 hate him. But when u have a guy that was willing 2 stand up 2 LeBl**job james after he was dancing and prancing during a stomping on my bulls last season,he instantly won me over. That and his play. So if getting melo means getting rid of noah, I say HELL 2 THE NO! Trade deng, brewer if u have 2,bogans or taj plus some draft picks. I’d hate 2 c taj or brewer go but they can b replaced. Right now the bulls faithful have high expectations. Not title hopes tho. But 2 FINALLY,now going on 13 w/out a title,2 do some real damage and take som1 7 games 2 beat us n the 2nd round. I’m hoping ecf,but I don’t c that happening unfortunatly. W/melo tho along w/rose,booz,noah and korver, the chico bulls got the pieces n place 4 chips #7,8,9….u get the picture. As the beatnuts would say “Watch out now”

  • al29

It’s not worth trading Noah, as a starting 5 of Melo, Boozer, Noah, Brewer and Rose would arguably be the best in the league. Boozer and Noah would cause a lot of problems for teams in the paint. Why not just wait until the end of the year when Melo opts out, and then somehow get rid of Deng? Also, if Melo leaves Denver, where does this leave Billups and K-mart- will the nuggets trade away their expiring contracts?

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

First – I wouldn’t include Noah in any trade. If the Bulls seriously want to contend for a title, someone’s going to need to gaurd Dwight, Bynum, Gasol, Garnett, Perkins. Second – I don’t understand why Deng’s contract is viewed as being an “albatross”. Yeah he’s slightly overpaid, but dude averaged 18 ppg last season. I’d put him on the same level as Rudy gay, whose making $4MM more a year. Not a great contract, but not a team breaking contract.

  • http://slam TERENCE ANG

    just get melo

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

Yeah I think this would be one to many moves for Chicago.

  • Robb

The Bulls would need some presence in the middle if they trade Noah. Melo is great but I wouldn’t trade Noah.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Now if you said Noah and Deng for Melo and Nene, then I’m saying go for it.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Noah is not involved in any trade for Melo. Don’t believe me? Then take it from K.C. Johnson, Bulls beat writer: @KCJHoop Bulls are trying to extend Noah, not trade him. He tweeted that about 20 min ago.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Trading Noah is a bad move with Boozer as your main frontcourt option.
Boozer needs a defender next to him to hid his defensive weaknesses, and it’s an added bonus that Noah can also hit the boards. Melo is nice, really, really nice, but you can’t have Melo, Boozer and Rose on the floor and be a great defensive team. You can’t even be a good defensive team if you dn’t have have two other stalwarts playing defense, like say Noah and Brewer. If they make this trade, the Bulls would have to see drastic improvements in the defense of Melo, Boozer and Rose, or there would be a big problem.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

co-sign Diesel. Although, if I were the Bulls, I’d just keep in touch with Denver to see how things are going. No reason to make a deal when a) you still want to see how this new team does with an improved Rose and b) it might be possible to get Melo in after the upcoming lockout

  • JTaylor21

The bulls should make this trade because a lebron vs Melo, DWade vs DRose, and CBosh vs CBooz playoff series would be one for the ages, especially bron vs melo. The nuggets are going NO where fast and should jump at any chance of this deal happening. Also the bulls with Noah have a very small chance of reaching the Conf. Finals, it’s the same with Melo but at least they’ll will be an exciting team to watch and make for one hell of a series vs the Three05.

  • http://www.slamonline.com jumpman3224

Not in overall talent, but I do think Melo-Rose-Boozer would be a better trio than the Miami 3 in terms of how the pieces fit together (no I am not saying Melo>LBJ or Rose>Wade). A playoff matchup between those two teams would be epic.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

I don’t think Rose is a defensive liability. He’s been playing good D at the Worlds. And now that Boozer is taking some of the scoring load off of him he can expend a little more energy on the defensive side.

  • kundai

Let me go off. So this is good for both teams. The Nuggets get some building pieces. The bulls get the purest scorer in the league. Durant close close second. But i cant see the bulls giving up almost the heart of the team you feel me. and like the seed ill end it and say BOOK IT!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Rose’s offensive load will increase in Chicago, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see his defense slack because of that. Plus, even when he gives effort, he’s not a great defender. He doesn’t do the little things well.
Boozer’s problem in Utah wasn’t his minutes or the offensive load. They were a disinterest in defense and poor fundamentals, and his height. Boozer is a less offensively talent Amare, who rebounds better.

  • JTaylor21

@The seed you need to copyright that Book It phrase, it is getting out of hand.

Mello to the Bulls…OMG! That would be a big problem!

  • Tyler

Why give up a good piece like Noah for a guy who makes your line up even smaller? smh

  • D12FSU

whos their back up for noah in chicago anyways?

  • http://bulls.com airs

i gotta disagree with you on that last point Allenp. drose’s offensive load will be greater, but his defense isnt as bad as people think. kid’s motivated to do well in everything and i think his flashy offense overshadows that.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    taj is their backup

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He’s not Steve Nash on defense, but given his physical gifts, he should be more of a problem. Too often opposing guards give him the business. Hell, didn’t Rondo average a triple double?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Taj is not Noah’s backup, he’s Boozer’s. Kurt Thomas and Omer Asik are Noah’s backups. Anyways, this one is tricky. Noah is the heart and soul of the team, but getting Melo would be nice. Ultimately I think this deal won’t go down unless the Nugs cave in and take just Deng and lesser players.

  • Fisticuffs

    Trade boozer for melo!

Carmelo will be a Knick. It’s only a matter of time. The rest is just fluff.

  • Love4Humanity

If the Bulls trade Noah, they’re losing their emotional leader. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen weren’t great defenders until Coach Thibs got to them. He will hold Rose and Boozer accountable on both ends of the floor.

  • ethan

    WHERE IS SLAM 142!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i think the real question is, if melo isn’t traded, how high will you pick him in fantasy draft?

  • slick ric

Months later I dont wanna hear nobody saying the bulls should of traded for Melo like they should have traded for Kobe or none of that other bull, I mean Noah can be real good but carmelo can be great.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

I don’t know when the “Melo doesn’t play D” mantra came back to describe him… He did a pretty good job on Kobe the year before last and thought he had stepped up his perimeter defense since then. Or… Maybe not.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Bad move. Melo doesn’t fit, and we don’t need an alpha dog fight between Melo and Rose. This team belongs to Rose and should be built as such.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah, I disagree man. When he wants to, he can play pretty good defense. But, how often does he want to?He’s where Lebron and Dwade were a few years back, instead of where they are now. Both of them made massive improvements to their defense, Melo, not so much.

  • hammer

    Man. F**k all fantasy drafts!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Melo FITS! Why don’t the Bulls just give Noah, MELO IS only 26, Noah is 25…. Melo is a much much much better basketball player then Noah… simple as that.

  • hammer

@ pardeep. Melo is a better offensive player than noah, but that’s about it. Defense? Can’t get that from melo. Rebounding? Can’t get that from melo. Hustle play/energy? Can’t get that from melo. Heart and emotional leader of team? Can’t get that from melo

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Go to the gosh darn Rockets or the Knicks, Melo! F*ck stacking the East! (unless it’s New York).

  • SpaceJam

We will not be better off without Noah. We need to trade deng and give up gibson and j. johnson. Melo definitley fits b/c rose can score but it’s not his first priority. The bulls just really needed his points last year. Melo will shoulder the scoring load w/boozer while rose can focus on setting everybody up and still get his 17-19 ppg. Then they’ll have the best starting lineup in the league, on paper. We’ll have to wait and see.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Those who would rather have Noah than Melo is sadly mistaken. The Bulls had this opportunity before to get Kobe. Bulls better not make the same mistake and better let go of Noah if they have a shot to get a top 5 NBA player. Melo should just walk away next year and sign with the Bulls own his own, but he is ready to leave. If I was Nuggets I would rather have Chandler and some picks for Melo than Noah anyway. Chandler has upside and come in and start in Melo place. The Nuggets have plenty of bigs, they need an athletic SF like Chandler. BOOK IT!!!

  • dma

i mean, if the bulls swapped deng/noah for carmelo, does it really make them that much better than what denver had last year?

  • The Philosopher

    Study AND analyze hammer @8:03p.m.
We have all seen Caramel – o melt down a plenty of times.
    He is no leader.
Noah is a guy you take to war with you.
    He’ll inspire you.
Anthony will throw you under the bus.
He throws himself under buses, too.
I wouldn’t be surprised either way though, if they do it or not.

Luol Deng first rounder this year and first rounder next year seems fair for a guy that will almost for sure leave. You’re getting a versatile small, and the opportunity at two great guys. Honestly, the Nuggets would still make the playoffs without Melo in my opinion, they just wouldn’t get very far.

  • BostonBaller

I like Noah’s hustle and game and he’d look good in Green but let’s not anoint him star status. Bulls fans would hate to see him go but as someone stated earlier: Noah can be replaced easier than getting a player of Melo’s caliber. The Bulls are in a better position to hold to their guns than the Nuggets b/c Melo is out of Denver after this year regardless…which means Denver will have to take less for him if they are going to get ANYTHING for him, point blank. ps LaLA likes the Duck Boats so they may end up here in Boston. lol.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

How much further does a duo of Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony go than a duo of Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony? Bulls don’t necessarily need this trade, and I’m sure Melo would rather play in… HOUSTON! (c’mon…)

  • JTaylor21

Teddy is right about Rose/Melo and AI/Melo. People are so ready to crown rose as the best thing since gunpowder and think that he’s ready to lead a team to a chip in only his third year, but I DON”T see it happening. Don’t get me wrong, dude is a straight up BEAST but is he really that much better than RWestbrook, NO. I don’t hear nobody praising westbrook the same way they do Rose even though they are very equal in terms of talent and accomplishments. Didn’t Rondo drop a FU*KING triple double on his a** during a seven game series a few years back, people need to slow down with all the hyping up of DRose.

  • Rikson

Noah – boozer – melo – brewer – Rose – Best starting 5 in the league: WTF? Do you guys even watch NBA games? Unless rose gets a 3-Point shoot (which is about Time for a pg), hes just a better westbrook! And stop overrating melo! Dude had a great team in denver and reached the CF once!!! Who cares bout melo???
