Bulls Sign Brian Scalabrine

If there’s one player Tom Thibodeau absolutely couldn’t leave behind in Boston, it’s obviously Scalabrine. From the Chicago Tribune: “The Bulls will bring nine-year veteran Brian Scalabrine to training camp on a non-guaranteed contract, which only becomes guaranteed if he lands the 13th roster spot, a league source said. That keeps the Bulls’ ongoing discussions with the Trail Blazers regarding disgruntled swingman Rudy Fernandez an option, though one source said it’s unlikely that deal will happen. The Bulls have offered a future first-round pick for Fernandez. Scalabrine, 32, spent the last five seasons with the Celtics, where new coach Tom Thibodeau served as an associate head coach for the last three seasons. Thibodeau values Scalabrine’s shooting ability in sporadic spot minutes, as well as his locker room professionalism.”

This should be the move that propels them to the Finals.

Meh, I was going to say something similar to Eboy. Too late.

The Bulls don’t need Melo now.

  • Joe A

Dude is gonna look terrible in a red jersey.

And let all the jokes about how Scal makes the bulls a championship team begin…..

  • vtrobot

Ha ha, Joe A. Orange and red really clash. We’ll miss you in Boston, Scal. CHI fans will love it when Scal hits a clutch 3 in the playoffs. Height and locker professionalism can really extend a career.

@Joe, I was thinking the same thing. If he doesn’t say “FLAME ON” every time he shoots the ball I’ll be disappointed. Seriously though, he’s a decent 3 point shooter and the more shooters the bulls can get the better. Not a bad pickup for the 12th man.

A bench always needs warming no matter where it is.

  • EJ

I guess Shaq’s the new mascot…er I mean superstar for the Celtics, so they don’t need him anymore.

    Ride that bench!

I feel like he’ll end up making a video about gingers having souls at 1 point.

That’s championship experience he’s bringing (even though he was on the inactive list for the whole of the 2008 playoffs)

And thus ends an era, godspeed Scal…

I’ll take any shooters we can get. Of course, it would be great if we could actually get a shooting shooting guard (not a typo) since Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer really aren’t known for their shooting.

  • MikeC.

Flame on! Priceless. I hope he makes the team. Seeing Veal in those red warmups will be like looking at an optical illusion.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@Enigmatic- Isnt Korver a shooting shooting guard? (also not a typo).

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Enigmatic, Keith Bogans IS a shooting shooting guard. Ronnie Brewer not so much, but he makes up for it on his defense. And don’t forget Korver, who’s a SF but still a shooter.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Just shows there is truly hope for any one of us out there!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Boss Terry – yeah, he can play the position, but he’ll more likely be used more as Deng’s backup at SF, since the only other option there is James Johnson…yay.
@ Niq – fair enough, but it’d be nice if Bogans shot better than 40% from the field, and 35% from 3. I’m just saying, I got love for my squad, but I think the missing piece is a 2-guard who can punish the opposing defense with his jump-shooting. Redick would’ve been perfect, but then we wouldn’t have Brewer, who I’m also happy to have. Can’t have it all I guess.

  • http://slamonline.com Greatness(BackInBlack)

the jersey will look good with his hair.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

aww, James Johnson isnt so bad.. When my Blazers were shopping Fernandez, his name came up in a possible trade.. I was all for it, but just because I wanted the cry baby outta here.. Now hes telling the press hes happy in Portland, and not being traded yet shows that the team believes in him.. Whatever, he’ll be booed opening night..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, I think we Bulls fans have been a little tough on Johnson. But, when the dude drafted ten spots behind you plays leaps and bounds better than you, you’re gonna take some hits. Hopefully he does better his second year. There’s a lot of Bulls fans still hoping Fernandez lands with us, but I’m not sold yet. Isn’t his whole thing that he wants to start? He won’t start in Chicago either.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

He just wants Gasol like minutes.. Aint gettin’ it behind Roy.. Hes a good shooter, and sometimes clutch, but fragile as hell..

  • Rudy

Best news of the entire off-season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

@Enigmatic, so I take it you weren’t happy with them letting Ben Gordon walk?

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

The power in the East has shifted.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

NiQ: Actually, I was happy as hell when Gordon left. I’m not a big fan of undersized 2-guards not named Allen Iverson (actually, I was never a big fan of AI either, but dude was sick as hell). Gordon’s defense was suspect and he was either on fire or ice cold, never somewhere in the middle. Plus, I knew with the money we weren’t paying Gordon I knew we could take a shot at a LeBron or Dwyane Wade (though that didn’t work out, obviously, but we got Boozer).

SLAMONLINE.COM – I want to see the “Scalabrine Machine” blog coming to you live from MIAMI BEACH. He’ll need about 15 layers of fake tan, hair dyed dark chocolate and some serious neck tats. To coin a phrase around these parts: BOOK IT!

Brian Scalabrine is a class player. He will elevate the Bulls with his smart play. As a Celtic season ticket holder i know Brian was much more than a mascot. This guy can run ball. You will learn to appreciate his presence.
