Carlos Boozer: ‘A Realistic Goal for Us Is a Championship’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Last season, the Chicago Bulls won but one measly game during the Playoffs. Their newest acquisition, via free agency, expects them to win fifteen more postseason ballgames in 2011.

Carlos Boozer is aiming big this upcoming season, and tells ESPN that it’s championship or bust for the Bulls:

“A championship,” Boozer said. “I think a realistic goal for us is a championship. I think anything shorter than that we’re setting ourselves up to be shorter than what we can reach. I think [we have] potential to be a championship-level team.”

One of the reasons Boozer feels so confident is due to the fact that he gets to play with the Bulls’ 21-year-old All-Star point guard, Derrick Rose. “He’s tight,” Boozer said. “He can play. With our combination of what we have on our team, with myself in the post, with D. Rose at the point guard spot, Joakim [Noah] plugging that middle up, Luol Deng being very versatile on the wing, I think we have a team that can rival anybody. I think we’ll be able to compete against every team in the league.”

The Bulls are expected to be one of the very best teams in the Eastern Conference next season, though I’m not sure anyone — save for Carlos Boozer — truly expects them to challenge for a title.

Regardless of what the expectations may or may not be, the new guy has now issued the biggest challenge of all.

You tell ‘em mister Boozer. At least it seems a lot more people are rooting for your Bulls than for those Miami Heat to win something this season.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.2 at 9:09 am
    Puff, puff, pass, Carlos.

  • Ryan D Posted: Sep.2 at 9:11 am
A realistic goal for them is to get out of the first round.

    GO Bulls

  • drosefan Posted: Sep.2 at 9:19 am
I agree with Booz. If they play defense, which they will with their new coach, they will be able to compete with Miami. I see a potential conflict on the court with Wade and James. LeBron’s ego is so huge, at some point he’s going to get tired of watching D-Wade say “This is my house”. The Bulls are a better TEAM. Not just 3 stars together with a bunch of average and below average players. Over the hill Juwan Howard and Ilguaskas can’t guard Boozer. Noah will run all around them and out hustle them time and time again. Chalmers can’t guard D Rose on his best day anymore.

Whate else is he going to say? “We’ll have a decent season”? He knows the reality’s closer to the 2nd than the first, but he’s trying to assert his “veteran leadership” now.

  • Dave. Posted: Sep.2 at 9:25 am
The biggest challenge of all will be getting Boozer to D up.

  • Negetivekreep Posted: Sep.2 at 9:28 am
What about D Williams… “he’s tight” “he can play”?

  • Negetivekreep Posted: Sep.2 at 9:35 am
“Win a ring for the Deng.”

The bulls have a nice squad this year….

  • dirty frank Posted: Sep.2 at 10:00 am
Cheryl’s right. Any player must have this mentality and it would be silly for them to say otherwise. In reality, the Bulls will not be winning the chip this year.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.2 at 10:10 am
Come on DRose fan, the heat will have none of problems because no one those guys are BALL HOGS unlike some players (wink wink Kobe), so there won’t be any bit*hing about shots especially between wade and bron because they’re both unselfish players. The bulls will be lucky to get the 4th seed in the east because people are forgetting about ATL, a better team. They have improved their wins in the past 2 years and this year will be no different. East standings- 1.Heat 2.Magic 3.Celts 4.Hawks 5.Bulls 6.Bucks 7.Bobcats 8.Knicks

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.2 at 10:19 am
What do you guys expect Boozer to set the bar at? “I think we have a great chance at reaching the conference semi-finals and to be eliminated by the Celtics?” That is just stupid. Every NBA player should want to win a championship and set the bar their. I dont think Chicago will win, but i dont see why Boozer should think they cant.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.2 at 10:20 am
Well Cheryl said the same thing as i did. Too bad im a narcisist who only reads other comments after i post my own, because i think im more important/more orginal. Belated co-sign

  • Exile Posted: Sep.2 at 10:30 am
I just want (in order of preference):
    1. Chicago;
    2. Boston; or
    3. Orlando
to end Miami. (sorry Eboy… I love Bosh and Wade, but since LeBron joined in… I CANNOT cheer for these guys). Go Booz!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Sep.2 at 10:30 am
In my opinion, the Bull’s ceiling RIGHT NOW, is ECF’s, but it’s great for Carlos to set his goals high.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Sep.2 at 10:31 am
    *Bulls

  • TERENCE ANG Posted: Sep.2 at 10:46 am
Anybody expect the f**king HEAT!!!!!!! BUllsheat!!!

  • The D Train Posted: Sep.2 at 10:46 am
Fret not, E, I am attending my 2nd grade daughter’s open house tonight, as a matter of fact. So hopefully some of the insanity on these boards will diminish…but I wouldn’t count on it.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Sep.2 at 10:51 am
Eboy, you think some of these guys go to school in the first place?

  • Ronald Posted: Sep.2 at 11:09 am
    Chicaco Bulls ’10 < Utah Jazz ’08-’10

  • chiqo Posted: Sep.2 at 11:42 am
“Last season, the Chicago Bulls won but one measly game during the Playoffs. Their newest acquisition, via free agency, expects them to win fifteen more postseason ballgames in 2011.” hey mutoni, this line would be funny if miami didn’t have the same situation/expectations and if the bulls didn’t have three or four legitimate rotation guys added to the mix. don’t think they’ll win it, just saying.

  • EJ Posted: Sep.2 at 11:44 am
They are good, Rose and Boozer are second tier all stars, and Joakim is very solid, not a star but a real solid player who gives you hustle and energy. Luol Deng is in the same level as Noah, and Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver and Taj Gibson are all solid players too. They are good, but I expect them to go fishing in the second round, Heat, Boston and Orlando are just a little too good, and of course LA. I’d say they are just about as good as the Hawks.

  • LA Huey Posted: Sep.2 at 11:45 am
Ronald brings up a good point. How is this team significantly different from the Jazz squad that Boozer, Brewer and Korv left? Amazing what locale and market does for a collective’s prospects.

  • Allenp Posted: Sep.2 at 11:55 am
Noah is better than Okur. At least for playing with Boozer who needs a physical defense force to really be effective. Plus, Okur shot way too many threes.
Deng is a better player than AK right now. Maybe not when AK actually cared about basketball, but at this point, I’d rather have Deng than AK.
Dwill is better than DRose, but DRose is still one of the best in the business right now. I think the pieces around Carlos, whne you consider Korver and Brewer and Gibson, have somewhat improved, and you have a hungry young team that still has room to improve even more. That Jazz team, while talented, had parts that had stopped working together for whatever reason. It was time for a shakeup.

  • Diesel Posted: Sep.2 at 11:57 am
@ LA and Ronald – They’re different and better because Deng and Noah are significantly better than AK and Okur. AK averaged 12 points a game to Deng’s 18. And a big knock on Boozer is he can’t defend tall 4′s and 5′s…neither could Okur in Utah cause he was too slow. Well in Chicago defense and rebounds are covered with Noah. Add to that a MUCH better bench in Taj, Thomas, and CJ. That Utah team gave the Lakers all the could handle in the conference finals. What’s to say a slighty better team wouldn’t have beat the Lakers and made it to the finals? And that’s when the west was stacked. Its very realistic to put the Bulls in the finals. I think people are overrating an old Boston team and giving too much credit to an Orlando team that relies heavily on an undersized point gaurd and an over the hill shooting gaurd.

  • Diesel Posted: Sep.2 at 12:01 pm
Allen you got your comment in before I could. And we actually agree on something.

  • Allenp Posted: Sep.2 at 12:17 pm
We would agree more if you removed your cranium from your anus…
    Lol.

  • Diesel Posted: Sep.2 at 12:51 pm
I’ll let that comment slide since I’m still in celebratory mode for our first agreement.

  • Shem Posted: Sep.2 at 1:11 pm
    Deron Williams > Rose

    yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah boy

  • airs Posted: Sep.2 at 1:17 pm
ppl are still sleepin on drose.
    this year is his year

  • JE Posted: Sep.2 at 1:23 pm
That’s what I would say if I was on a championship caliber team, too.

  • KH10 Posted: Sep.2 at 1:39 pm
I would place chicago above Orlando right now
    Drose>Jameer
    Brewer/Korver = Pietrus/Reddick
    Deng>Vince
    Boozer>Shard
Noah<Dwight, but not by that much.

  • Ooah Posted: Sep.2 at 1:41 pm
Bulls should bring back Rex Chapman if they truly want to contend.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.2 at 2:12 pm
DWill>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>DRose. Sorry bulls fans but dude is just not there yet.

  • Enigmatic Posted: Sep.2 at 2:26 pm
    Cheryl said it best.

  • LA Huey Posted: Sep.2 at 2:38 pm
@Allenp, @Diesel, I’ll agree that they’re better but I don’t see the differences as significant. Okur’s preference to jack up threes I felt lightened up the D in the paint for Boozer and Deron to attack. Deng and AK are equally injury prone so their contributions are too inconsistent to count on in the postseason. Basically, I qualify significant as being able to beat a healthy Lakers team or take them to 7 games. That’s not realistic.

  • Ryan D Posted: Sep.2 at 2:39 pm
I waiting for the first athlete to not have the same robotic answer evertime he gets asked a question. Why cant Booze just be like “yea I think we’ll be decent, but i just paid a phat salary and it’s better then freezing my ass off in Utah”! Church.

  • drosefan Posted: Sep.2 at 3:21 pm
JTaylor, LeBron routinely dribbled the ball for at least 10 seconds before deciding to pass or shoot…So if you want to talk about ballhogs, there is your ballhog. You are one of the bandwagon fans for the Heat, it’s obvious. That’s okay. But when June comes around and Kobe is holding up another trophy, maybe you will then recognize that the Heat look great on paper, but playing the games are a different thing. The fact is that the Heat are 2 superstars, one all-star and a bunch of role players. The Bulls are a more complete team. LeBron’s ego has been well documented if one would take the time to find the information on him. When D-Wade starts claiming that it’s his house, LeBron’s ego will take a huge hit and we’ll see where the Heat end at the season. The trophy belongs in LA and it will be there again come June 2011. The correct East standings right now when one is not caught up in the Heat hype is Celtics, Heat, Magic, Bulls, Bucks, Hawks, Bobcats, Sixers.

  • CONEY ISLANDER Posted: Sep.2 at 3:32 pm
THEY ARE DEEP, BUT THERE ARE MONSTERS IN THE EAST NOW!

  • Tyler Posted: Sep.2 at 6:31 pm
    @drosefan
finally someone who agrees with me lol the Heat are a great paper team but Chicago is one of the most complete squads in the NBA period so Boozer should be looking at a title but winning it is completely different lol

  • Red Posted: Sep.2 at 11:24 pm
    d’Bulls! the end.

  • Bassbesteck Posted: Sep.4 at 9:48 am
All you guys comparing DWill and DRose: Of course DWill>DRose. At the moment at least.
ROSE IS 21!!!! And getting better each year. I think Rose will be at least as good as DWill the season after this one.
Plus: They are preeeetty different players on the same position…
I’m looking forward to this season, seeing the Bulls making 50+ wins.
