Corey Maggette: Bucks are Serious Contenders

Maggette — who could be on the chilling list all preseason long — views Milwaukee as a serious challenger to the League’s elite teams. The Journal Sentinel reporter somehow kept it together enough to file the following: “Corey Maggette is not afraid to discuss the S word, as in starter. The Milwaukee Bucks’ new small forward said he’s here to fit in with a contending team, whether it’s as a starter or in a backup role to last year’s starter, Carlos Delfino. And the 30-year-old veteran tossed around another interesting word during the Bucks’ annual media day gathering Monday at the Cousins Center. Maggette said the C word – as in championship – is possible in places other than Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and Boston. ‘I’m old-school,’ Maggette said with a grin. ‘Seeing this talent here, you have to put us in the category, you have to. It’s not like, ‘We’re playing the Bucks; it’s going to be an easy win.’ We have to have some swagger, we have to have some type of confidence, and that starts (Tuesday). The only players who are world champions are the Los Angeles Lakers, and everybody else is trying to get where they’re at. It still will be a dogfight with Miami and those other guys. When the time comes, we’ve just got to do it.’”

I still think they’re one big man away, to have Bogut’s back if he injured. But you can’t deny they got better this summer.

nothing wrong with thinking positive, no matter how mistaken you are

  • JOE!

    I hope Corey’s right.

They are contenders but NOT serious ones. Who out of the Big 3 East teams are they even as good as? NONE, How can someone be scared of Rudolph?

The Buck are this season’s Atlanta Hawks (and vice versa it seems).

  • ClydeSays

Hey, I really like the Jennings/Bogut combo. They could be great for years to come. But contenders don’t have Corey Maggette on the roster…

They could have a puncher’s chance against Boston IF they have an injury to a key player (Rondo, KG, Pierce, Shuttlesworth). Aside from that, focus on just avenging last year’s series against the Hawks.

is stack with them right now or doing the same thing as last year, playing half a season?

I honestly feel that they could be giant killers when the playoffs roll around. Will they reach the finals? Who knows but it doesn’t look that way now. I could certainly see some cocky eastern team thinking that they can sleep walk over the Bucks in the 1st or 2nd round and find themselves taking an early summer vacation when they wake up.

Los Angeles Lakers are NOT World Champions.

The Lakers will win again in my opinion. They’re head and shoulders above everyone else besides the Celtics. But this will be an exciting season. New uniforms. A lot of teams with expectations. But it all starts and ends in LA with Kobe, Gasol, Odom, Bynum and Coach Phil.

he’s wrong, but it’s pretty incredible that the bucks are even in a position to win after some of the lean years they had. they can be even better if they use redd’s expiring contract to get another piece in there.

I like what the Bucks have done.Drew Gooden is solid next to a legit center plus with Maggette and CDR I think they will surpass the Hawks this season. They got some help on the wing, plus some young active bodies in the paint. Larry Saunders and Tiny Gallon.

    N**** please!

  • Robb

They’re gonna be fun to watch, but contenders?

  • Red

    Bulls will own.

Am I the only one who doesn’t see him saying this anywhere in that quote? He said they’re trying to get to the Lakers level just like everyone else and that they aren’t gonna lay down to the Heat, etc. 100% truth and the Bucks will be a team others have to worry about this year.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

not an exact quote, but he does say that they have to be put in that category. a bit of a sensationalist headline, but not completely.

  • Celtics fan

    Beantown! Bucks suck

Bucks have a nice squad, second round mos def

  • SpaceJam

My Bulls gonna win the conference, but don’t sleep on the bucks. Drew Gooden is a very solid pf in this league and I’m surprised he hasn’t found a home. Bogut is back and Jennings will be better. Now Salmons needs to put together a full 20 pt season unlike what he did for the bulls. If and this is a big if, if Cory Maggette can play defense and get to the free throw line he will be a major component. If he plays defense.

  • Papa Smurf

If this Bucks team meshes well, they could do even better than most expect. That’s a big IF, but this team is talented and the parts appear to fit well. The GM/owner did a nice job. Now, it’s on the coaches and players to get the job done.

Corey Maggette: “The Bucks are serious contenders… for more travel violations”

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

If Jennings takes a big step forward (like a 19 and 9 step), Bogut can recover/stay healthy, Maggette plays defense, Salmons replicates his playoff play, and Gooden turns out to be a contributor…they could shock a team like Boston, Orlando, or Miami.

  • Lazarus

lead the league in blocks with a sanders and boogieman frontcourt. claim.

A bunch of IFs.. not enough fire power, but get ready for a bunch of tight games.. They are a playoff team but they better get a seed higher then 6th cause that East is a monster at the top this year..
