DeMarcus Cousins: ‘I Want to Be the Rookie of the Year’

Cousins isn’t shy about expressing the (lofty) goals he has for his rookie year. The Sac Bee reports: “He wants to play well and be recognized. Cousins won’t beg his detractors to like him. But he won’t completely tune them out, either. They are part of his motivation. ‘When I’m on the court, I’m trying to show you – especially the people that doubted my basketball skills,’ Cousins said. ‘I want to be the Rookie of the Year. I didn’t get a chance to be the Player of the Year in college. I need my own individual award. I want mine.’”

Honestly, he is on the short list for the ROY right now. That being said, the season hasn’t even started. I look forward to seeing what he can do against the frontcourts in the West.

Everyone is really forgetting about that beast in L.A: Blake Griffin

  • Largo

“I want mine” lol I guess the Kings aren’t going to be very good this year.

Cousins’ doesn’t seem like the epitomy of a team guy when he says this kind of stuff. Wait and see, but I’m not convinced. Rasheed Wallace without range.

co-sign t-sizzle. To quote the great Roy Jones Jr, ‘y’all must have forgot!’

  • Fat Lever

Reflex, please don’t ever quote that hot mess of a “song”. That might be the worst recorded song in this history of music. Yes, worse than K.O.B.E.

“especially the people that doubted my basketball skills” Demarcus your bball skills weren’t what they doubted, it was your maturity and mental stability!

he could pull it off. Loookin like the poor mans Tim Duncan

    He better start lifting weights

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

Demarcus’ strength isn’t exactly a question mark, he has plenty of bulk. He needs to hit the treadmill and thin out a bit

People need to stop comparing guys to Duncan. Nothing about Cousins reminds me of Timmy. It nice that DeMarcus is highly motivated, but making a big impact as a team trumps individual accolades, IMO.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Not 2 jinx the guy but this comment remind me of when B-Easy said his goal 4 his rookie year was 2 b MVP, not ROY. We all know now how it ended… Good luck DMarcus

Dude needs to be introduced to these cats that go by “John Wall” and “Blake Griffin”

The comparisons in this comment section are ridiculous. “Rasheed Wallace without range”, “poor man’s Tim Duncan”…have you all ever seen DeMarcus Cousins, Rasheed Wallace or Tim Duncan play?

I guess when you know your team doesn’t have a chance to win a chip, the best thing you can do is go for individual accolades. Just play hard, rebound, defend, score and he’ll be in the running. Honestly I think Blake Griffin is the easiest choice for ROY honors, but we’ll see…

John Wall is gonna take it away from him and then give him the award saying, “Hey Cousins, my bad bro, here you said you wanted the ROY award”
    *hands over ROY award*
    Cousins, “AW HELL NAW!!!”

He’s got the tools to be one of the best centers the league has seen in a long time. He’s really polished for a rookie in the post and he can step back and hit the perimeter J when given space. He’ll be in shape when the long 82-game season starts kicking his @ss–and he’ll be better for it.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

DeMarcus Cousins will be better than Blake Griffin. Just a prediction.

  • JoeMaMa

@Teddy…I shall not cosign that that bit. Blake Griffin has an open spot at the 4, and Kaman will take double teams away, freeing him up to do his thing. I think Blake Griffin is going to take over the 4 spot in the league. I wager one American dollar.

  • Lazarus

cuz will be the best player from this class

im feeling a roy race between griff n wes though.

DeMarcus Cousins in two words: Derrick Coleman

  • Nbd

I think if he gets enough playing time he might have a shot at ROY

  • JayBo

J.Wall and B.Griffin are going to be co ROY’s. Cousins has potential(such a dangerous word) but so did Beasley. Tho to be fair Dmarc is in a better situation as a rook than Mike. I guess i’m saying Cousins has the talent but lacks the maturity and it’s already showing by saying he would rather win the ROY as apposed to trying to make the playoffs.

dude is gna be an absolute beast in jus a few short years.. hes a true center (which is an almost completely lost position in the nba now) and he will (in my opinion) be one of the best centers in the league in a 2 or 3 years
