Derrick Rose Wants to Become a Three-Point Shooter

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Derrick Rose became one of the NBA’s most exciting players by doing one thing, and one thing alone: attacking the cup with reckless abandon. It resulted in countless highlights, and all kinds of exposure for the young point guard.

Rose plans on adding another layer to his already impressive offensive repertoire.

As a member of Team USA, and encouraged by the shorter three-point line in FIBA play, D-Rose has begun to tinker with his outside shooting. Derrick tells the Chicago Tribune that we could see him hoist a few more threes next season in Chicago:

Averaging 8.5 points and 2.9 assists in six starts, Rose has emerged as a vocal leader at the advice of coach Mike Krzyzewski and has continued to develop a 3-point touch that will dangerously round out his offensive game.

The FIBA line is 3 feet shorter than the NBA’s, but Rose’s 3-for-4 showing behind the arc against Angola provided a glimpse of the new confidence from long range he vowed to bring to his third season. “It’s something I’ve been working on over the summer with my trainer Rob (McClanaghan), and over here I stay after practice and take lots of reps shooting NBA threes,” Rose said. “Now when I’m open or need to shoot it, I will because I am confident it’ll go in.”

As he prepares for his third NBA season, Rose has an unimpressive career three-point average of 24.2%, and has yet to average more than one three-point attempt per game. Bulls fans can likely expect all of that to change very soon.

he can def do it if he works on it i could see him hittin like 2 a game an an average of bout 30% if he works really hard on it

  • andy

    deadlyyyyyy….

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

This kid is amazing in how he improves his game season to season. If he keeps it up the next Wade comparison will make sense. Glad he resisted trying to bring in an established superstar because he’s just young enough to cede leadership of the team to someone like Lebron or Wade.

  • Shine

    MVP

  • Love4Humanity

If he develops a solid 3 point shot, he will offically be unguardable. Forget the comparisons, you won’t be able to compare him to anyone past or present. He’s strong like Deron Williams and faster than CP3.

  • Way up north

Hey rondo, maybe take a page out of the drose book… see it is possible to adapt and improve your game, and not just continue to be stubborn and immature and have the same skill-set you came into the league with…

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

let the lunatic Bullz fans come here and declare the 10-11 ship his theirs to lose…LMFAO, Rose´s awsome but HAS A LONG WAY to go before he becomes an acceptable 3pt shooter.

  • lexluther703

@TrailBlazing you’re an idiot.. this article says nothing about the Bulls taking the ‘ship or Rose declaring he’s a great three point shooter. All it says is he’s WORKING on becoming a better shooter and that even though it’s not part of his game NOW, it will be SOON. It’s a shame when the haters start comin’ down on kids like Rose who work constantly at their game and don’t say a damn thing. Ya’ll clowns needa kill yourselves twice

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

yeah long way to go but it can happen. maybe try to be a great 20 ft shooter first before going the distance.. but coming off of the worlds i think he’s got a much improve D for next season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Does anyone think Rose has a tendency to be a very unselfish version of A.I. ?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Dwyane said something similar two seasons ago…..I would STILL not trust him with the game on the line taking a potentially game-tying/winning three pointer. Guys like him and Rose spend so much energy getting into the lane and taking contact that their legs are tired and shooting distance jumpers is not as easy for them then guys like Ray or Dirk who are almost entirely perimeter based.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

He may never be in the 3 point shootout but he’s got the right attitude. If you’re a guard in the NBA and can’t hit the three you need to be working on it.

  • http://hurricane823@yahoo.com jusitn

i think this is entirely possible for him to b a good three point shooter not a great one but a good one

  • Ronald

Wouldn’t he be better off learning how go run a team more efficiently? Or, how about learning to play at different speeds? Or, how about cutting down the turnovers? The kid is good, but so far, his 3 pt shooting is least of his worries.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

I’m surprised you would say that Eboy. Wade isn’t a perinial 3-point shooter; however, it is rare that I haven’t seen Wade hit a 3 when a 3 was needed. But then again, I credit that much more to him being clutch than being able to shoot a 3; Kinda like how Mike was. God FORBID Rose should aquire that ability.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

jusitn- you realise that if Rose is making 2 3′s a game, at 30% that he’s shooting almost 7 per game? He currently shoots less than 1 per game. Wtf are you talking about!?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Ronald he wants to improve on 3′s but i think he’s not gonna abandon the things you point out, the fact that the guy wants to improve maybe the weakest part of his game says a lot on how he wants to perfect his craft.. Back to DRose.. he has a great chance at becoming consistently deadly in 15-18 ft., but first he needs shoot by a jumpshot not by floaters..

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

    @lexluther703: stop crying you pu$$y.

    me-”Rose´s awsome but…” clearly a hater.

you-”Im being the pu$$y I am, haters blabla bla”

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Hursty.. If you made 2/3 at game 0/4 the other 0/2 the next and 1/1 i think that’s averaging 30% on 3′s you don’t have to take the same amount of shots for a certain average..

  • T-Money

E: I’m more confident in Wade hitting a much-needed 3 with less than a minute to go than hitting a wide-open 3 in the 2nd quarter. He’s not a pure shooter from deep but he’s a shot maker with the game on the line.

  • http://kb24.com DreXnaW21

Derrick Rose’s pure commitment to the game! I love it! He’s only gonna get better and better every season, with Carlos Boozer he’ll average more assists too

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Rose also needs to adjust his shooting form imo.. Ray, Nash, Dirk, Kobe all have a good form, the form of their elbows.. the release.. though there are also good shooters with a little akward release, like Fisher and even Gordon.. I think DRose is affected by how he release the ball, got to fix that a little..

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Wade’s jumpshot is a mini KG.. Perimeter and Freethrows.. that right leg a little farther on the front and longer release of the ball.

  • Elvis Freshly

Rose, just ask that one guy for tips who sh*tted on the entire bulls organization in the playoffs last year (Ray Ray)

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

agreed @J his form needs a total overhaul- don’t for a second think guys like Rondo etc. don’t have these same goals in mind as far as improving there shot, but the wrong form can only be improved upon so much. His shot is really twitchy, not smooth. And his rise seems heavy-footed if anyone knows what I’m saying

  • Love4Humanity

His shot doesn’t need an overhaul. His form isn’t that bad. If someone has been shooting a certain way since they picked up a ball, there’s really no need to change it completely. Just increase his range.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    killa. im liking this

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

@ Love4.. He doesnt need overhaul, but that form needs to be adjusted.. there’s a difference in that my friend. Heck, Kobe adjusted his “swing” in the midst of having a great shooting form.. it could do wonders for Rose,

  • vtrobot

@ Way up north: Rondo was mentioned in the article? I didn’t see that. I though it was a Rose piece. Rondo hasn’t improved since he’s been in the league? He hasn’t been working to get better all the time? Maybe when the “same skill set that you came into the league with” gets you a ring, two finals appearances in 4 years, an all-star nomination, and allows you to be the best defensive PG in the league, the urgency to improve your shot isn’t there. Or maybe he’s stubborn and immature.

  • slamfan4life

yaaa buddyy, cant wait til the season starts!

  • Overtime

there always seems to be two converations in the comments section. One by guys like Jukai, Eboy, Betcats, J, making reasoned arguments about basketball and understanding most of it is opinion anyway.
And then there’s the guys who calls everyone who disagrees with them haters and calls everyone else names…playground kids essentially

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Trailblazing got a lot of nerve calling someone else a p***y considering you act like you’ve got sand in your vagina everytime the Bulls are mentioned on here.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

And I agree with Overtime. Sadly, my first comment falls into the “playground kids” section. Derrick Rose will continue to improve in many facets of his game. But I don’t think he’ll ever be a legitimate threat from 3. Still, getting that percentage up to say, over .350 would suffice. His strength is his abliity to get to the rim, we all know that. Long as he has that weapon in his arsenal, he’ll stay deadly.

  • Jdubbs

want to shoot more 3′s huh? Ask Antoine Walker how that turned out. There was nothing more painful to watch then a guy who can’t shoot 3′s hoist brick after brick.

Hope the Bulls transition D is good, they’re gonna need to get back on all those long rebounds.

  • Overtime

Cosign Enigmatic, he doesnt need to be a top 5 3 point shooter, he just needs enough for defenders to think they have to step up to him.
As for the A.I comparisons, I think thats apt. Rose is obv much bulkier and stronger, and maybe has a little better hops, but essentially same kind of player (though Iverson was already a better shooter y this point)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If he can shoot 3′s similarly to Deron Williams, he’ll be fine.

  • Way up north

or maybe hes a problem in the locker room, quit team usa before he could be cut instead of accepting roles like rose, steph, gay and everyone else thats used to playing a bigger role on their team… and in my opinion to make the finals when you have 3-4 HOFs around you is not necessarily a reflection of his skills. Now i am a huge c’s fan and even like rondo and my comment probably could have been phrased better since i do think he has improved from the turnover machine he was his first two years, HOWEVER his biggest weakness (and what becomes apparently obv as the celts biggest weakness is when teams lay 15 feet off him or completely ignore him if hes off the ball on the wing) is his outside shot, and i understand the difficulties in changing form, but my point is how f-ing stubborn do you have to be to watch game film for 4 years, see that defenders beg you to take jumpers, and never make that jump after an offseason to at least get a midrange game. and id have to double check the stats but im pretty sure he has declined in ft% or at least not improved, which shows a lack of effort. Basically i see an incredibly talented, athletic pg who could easily be a top3 pg if he wasnt so concerned with letting everyone know that he believes hes already better than cp3…… And technically your right with all of his success so far he might not feel the need to improve, but thats what i see as the problem. And duh he wasnt mentioned, condescending maf-er, im just trying to make conversation

  • Way up north

    ^@VTrobot btw

  • Love4Humanity

When his quickness starts to tail off, he may need a 3 point shot. But right now, he’s good with getting more consistent from midrange and getting to the basket at will.

  • richard

It really annoys me when people say this player is gonna be the next whoever… Let Derrick Rose be the first Derrick Rose!! That “next” sh*t is getting lame & corny.

  • CONEY ISLANDER

D-ROSE WITH A LEGIT 3 POINT SHOT WOULD BE UNGUARDABLE! BOOK IT!

  • The Philosopher

    It’s all about repetition.
Reggie Miller had some of the worst form ever.

  • Chi-Town Stand Up

Its obvious that I must be the only die hard Bulls fan on here since I was born and raised in the Chi, but for all of you people saying he should work on his mid range game then I guess you guys didn’t bother to check out the article that was put together about the 25 best mid range shooters in the league! In just his second season in the league he’s already the 7th best mid range shooter in the league and the only PG who is ahead of him is CP3! Chris Paul was never as good of a mid range threat as D-Rose is his 2nd year in the league! D-Rose is coming for the best PG in the league title this year! Watchout D-Will and CP3 cause Rose has accomplished something that neither of them can stake claim too, and thats leading his team to the playoffs in his 1st 2 seasons in the league! He also averages more points in the postseason than both of those guys! So what makes some of you think that he won’t continue to improve on his already unstoppabale game! If he could just get some damn respect from the officials then I think you all will be very surprised at what his actual ceiling truly is! I’ve never saw a player get blatantly ignored everytime they go in the paint, and its not like he’s afraid of the contact because all of his layups come with contact! If you’re a true Bulls fan and just someone who watches when they’re on national TV then you know exactly ehat i’m saying!

  • Red

Rose will be a superstar next year or so. Bulls are definitely a threat to heat, celtics, lakers.

Cause think about it, if Rose gets a really good 3, he can kick it inside if he doesn’t have a shot or just drive it in.

If Rose can become even better & stay healthy, he can have an answer for Wade, maybe at this point even beat him. Boozer can take out Bosh easy. If there’s any problems for the Bulls it’s Lebron, and even he can be stopped if Thibs defense kicks in as well as we expect.

  • Red

    co-sign Chi-town. I’m a die-hard Chicago fan also, can’t wait for this season.

  • JTaylor21

@Red you’re kidding right? There’s no way in hell that Rose becomes as good or better than Wade even if he does have a three point shot. Also who guards Wade (don’t even dare to say Brewer), Bosh is better than Boozer by a little, Chalmers can hang not stop DRose, and then there’s the elephant in the room to guard. The Bulls are good but they won’t be nothing higher than the fourth seed. All I’m waiting for is B.Crawford to come on here and start b*tching about how I’m hating.

  • Red

No I’m not, Wade is old, and Rose at his prime will definitely be better. Brewer is known play good defense actually so yeah I’d place Brewer on him plus his D will get better with Coach Thibs. We might blow into 3rd seed or 2 depending on how the team stays together. We’re poised to get a top 3 this year or the next.

  • Red

    to* excuse me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Apparently, school let out early today. Wow.

  • JTaylor21

@Red, Damn when did 28 become old, you must have the Jay-z saying backwards think that 20 is the new 40 huh. Brewer is not stopping DWade the same way he wasn’t stopping kobe. Also there’s Mia, Orl, Bos, and even ATL, so that’s the top 4 seeds right there. If boston treats the regular season the same way they did last year then maybe just maybe the bulls can get the 4th seed.
