Derrick Rose: ‘Why Can’t I Be MVP?’

Hope springs eternal for all players and teams at this time of the year, and guys are unafraid to say what they really think. Here’s D-Rose, via the Chicago Sun-Times: “If still-blossoming Bulls point guard Derrick Rose doesn’t develop into one of the NBA’s great players, it won’t be because he doesn’t have the desire. During the Media Day festivities at the Berto Center on Monday as the team officially opened training camp — the first practice was scheduled for this morning — Rose spoke boldly when asked about his individual expectations for the upcoming season. ‘They’re high,’ he said confidently. ”The way I look at it, why can’t I be the MVP in the league? Why can’t I be the best player in the league? I don’t see why not. I work hard, I dedicate myself to the game and sacrifice a lot of things at a young age, and I know, if I continue to do good what I can get out of it. If that’s me going out and doing whatever, I’m willing to do it because in the long run I know it’s gonna help me.’ Said teammate Joakim Noah: ‘Derrick is an unbelievable talent and things have really changed around here since he’s been in Chicago. If Derrick feels that way, that’s good for us.’”

Drose is one of my fav players, but he’s not gonna be the MVP this year, maybe later, but he should focus more on becoming the best PG first.

  • Torrance

Because you won’t even be top 10 in Slam’s Top 50, Derrick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Uhm….because there’s a few guys in the league with names like Lebron, Kobe, D-Wade, KD, Dirk, CP3 etc.

  • JoeMaMa

Eric Piatkowski asked himself that question every year he was in the league. The Polish Rifle got robbed of said honour at least twice.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Oh boy, here comes the DRose bashing…

  • mattydchi

Why is Rose getting hated on for this statement? Can’t the dude have goals? I dont think he expects to win it this year, but I don’t see anything wrong with having high expectations.

  • JayBo

    Lebron James
    Kobe Bryant
    Kevin Durant
    Dwight Howard
    Chris Paul
    Dwyane Wade
    Carmelo Anthony
    Dirk Nowitzki
    Deron Williams
    Brandon Roy
Rajon Rondo. That’s why not Derrick. Focus on being a better PG and leading your team into the playoffs and then we can talk MVP.

  • J.C.

Maybe not for a few years but I like the attitude. Bron and Wade aren’t really in contention anymore, Kobe’s only getting older… KD can’t win it every year. D-Rose’s time is coming if he keeps getting better.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

TO elaborate: you are an inconsistent mid-range shooter, a liability from the three and your ability to create for others from the point is questionable. Clean these things up and you can be spoken about as being one of the best point guards in the league, then enter into MVP discussions. This is not hating, it’s fact.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Eboy, it’s hate when you fail to acknowledge what it is that he’s trying to say and give him credit for that FIRST, BEFORE you try and point out his shortcomings.

  • ManofGod131

Bash him if you want to, but if you would get off of the Heat bandwagon and consider the fact that Boozer will help him tremendously, he may have a shot. Who really thought that Kevin Durant would come in second last year? No one knows what will happen until the season starts and the games are played. And please, let’s not compare Eric Piatkowski and Derrick Rose.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

B: These were his words….”The way I look at it, why can’t I be the MVP in the league? Why can’t I be the best player in the league? Of the guys I have listed, who among them have more than one or two shortcomings in their games? Derrick has several….all of which can be fixed with time and like he said “hard work” but why try and put yourself in the position of trying to battle your place into that class of player when you don’t have the ability (just yet) to get there. Passion and fire is a nice trait to have, but sometimes a bit of humble realism is better. As I’ve heard since dude came in the league that he is “the most humble dude around”….this doesn’t ring of that. It’s my opinion. It’s not fact.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Did someone chirp at me to get off the Heat bandwagon? Me? Wow, you must be really new or just an idiot.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Derrick, go vote for yourself on my site’s MVP pole. No one has yet. Its been up a couple of weeks and Durant is running away with it.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Eboy, I was at media day yesterday when he said this. I’m sure it “reads” a certain way, but he didn’t say it with any bravado whatsoever. He was still the same humble dude he’s always been. He even said something similar at last years media day and one of his goals was to be an All-Star and he achieved that. All I’m saying is, don’t doubt this kid. His goals may not come this season, but I like where his head is at. And of course you’re entitled to your opinion and I respect it

  • Robb

It’s cool if drose wants to achieve something, but I think it would be better if he kept that to himself. I mean he has everything to make it happen, just dont brag about it.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@Robb: So he’s “bragging” now? He didn’t say, “I am going to…” he said, “Why can’t I be…” Big difference.

  • ManofGod131

Kevin’s already running away with it? Did the season start already? I must have missed something. And D-Rose is actually very humble compared to some of the other stars in the league.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Stop hating. I love that he has goals. If only players like Vince had that…omg.

  • Red

    Yup Dr1 for MVP.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

    This year. No. Someday. Maybe.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

I really hope he’s working hard on his 3 point shot.

  • rikson

Sounds like a fifteen year old… “But I wanna!!!”

  • moneyandthepower

one of englewoods finest. let the haters hate pooh u just keep doing u famo. and for the rest of u haters englewood all day! play wit it. we out here!

  • JTaylor21

I love DRose bcuz dude has the same demeanor every time you see him. It’s always good for players to want to achieve more but he literally has no shot of winning it this year because of the media’s new found love; kD. Also when was the last time a PG won it, remember when CP had a better season than KB but still lost it.

  • JayfromdaCHI

FORGET ALL U HATERS!! DROSE is the best point guard in the league and no one better come up with Rondo being better bcuz im pretty sure ur all aware of what happened in the USA team DROSE is ready to be the elite player we all no he can be he has help now he will show all u guys.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    @JTaylor21: Steve Nash

  • Matt

    meh.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

Best player? Not with under reign of LeBron/Kobe and the ascent of Durant. But MVP? With the criteria the media follows he can do it. You don’t even have to be top 5 to win MVP. Just be likeable, have an exciting game, and a team that does really well in the regular season. Ask this dude named “Steve Nash” in Phoenix.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

    I like D-Rose he’s humble but yet confident….

  • The Philosopher

One has to respect his drive.
A couple injuries, a little luck, his team gets far, he can do it.
    He’s already good enough.
And, there are other average shooting point guards who either have won The M.V.P. or came close, no?

  • JTaylor21

@BCrawford, I purposely left him out because everyone knows how I feel about those 2mvps that weren’t deserved. I won’t go there because that’s for another day but what I’m saying is that Rose is fighting an up-field battle against media love and established superstars.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@JTaylor21: I think Steve Nash is proof that MVP voting is a popularity contest. Not saying he didn’t deserve one, but back-to-back, I’m not so sure about that. But what’s done is done. That said, KD just might get it this year considering he’s the “anti-Lebron.” But people — meaning the media — “like” DRose. My thing is, he may know that he doesn’t have a “real” chance to win it, but he aims very high every year and as long as he does that, he does great things. Of course he most likely won’t win it, but who knows, he might be in the conversation. That’s close enough for now and I’m sure he’ll take it.

  • JTaylor21

@BCrawford, you hit it right on the head. DRose might not win it but him stepping up his game to another level would be tremendous for the bulls and NBA fans everywhere. Also there’s a seat open for another PG to seat next to CP/DWill in terms of Top PGs and if DRose steps up his game and team he will be mentioned next to those guys. I’m saying it first right here; a Bulls vs Celtics playoff series this year would be EPIC, it might not top the legendary 09 series but it would be more exciting in terms of the PG battle.

  • bashmo

Derrick Rose is currently the 5th best PG in the game after CP3, Dwill, Steve Nash and Rondo

  • Slick Ric

Hey, if he stay in shape and dont come into camp 260 pounds,he probably can win MvP one day… WTF is wrong with Baron

  • Groves

if you want it go get it, i know people are going to knock him. but with out players that have this kind of desire im pretty sure we wouldn’t have jordan, kobe, wade, bron, durant or cp3- they are all built the same in that desire category

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

If you’re going to list an inconsistent mid range shot as one of DRose’s weaknesses then you obviously don’t actually watch the Bulls. I haven’t looked at any stats, but I’d be willing to say Rose is the BEST mid range shooting pg in the league. Its one of his strengths. And I love all you fat unathletic slobs trying to hate on a guy for trying to improve his game and his team. I guess you guys would only be happy if he said he was sick of working hard and wanted to pair with 2 other superstars to make his life easier.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    ^No life

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5493184 Jackie Moon

Diesel – just go to nba.com/hotspots, and you will see that while Rose is not a terrible mid-range shooter, he definitely does not have the highest mid-range % of PGs. Chris Paul has a higher shooting % … Still, no reason DRose can’t be MVP, as long as he can lead his team to 55+ wins

  • Corbin

Derrick is just coming into his own. He use to defer to his “veterans” and now he believes he’s a great player in the league. Nothing wrong with saying Why Can’t I be? No one is stopping him from being the best ball player he can be, but himself, that’s all the dude was saying. Sure it may not come this season but he will be top 5 in votes this season if the Bulls topple 50 games or more this season. Word up.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I don’t like it anytime a player talks about MVP, All-Star, ROY or any other individual accolade. I prefer for a player to talk about playing his game and filling his role on the team etc. and IF in the end they get the MVP then great. But it should never be a focus for a player. It doesn’t seem like D-Rose is saying/insinuating that he’s focused on wanting to become the MVP, but there is room to read between the lines. Even LeBron was consistent about focusing his ‘words’ on the team and not him individually. Obviously words don’t mean your sincere, but sometimes I really do just want my guys to say the ‘right’ thing.

  • http://alan.george@gmail.com Breeze

whoever that guy was that stated the drose was the best pg in the league needs to be silenced with a silencer…..as of last year d-will is the best pg in the league…now to his mvp ambitions cant knock him but he like rondo needs alot of development..

  • http://dsfkjlf.com Jukai

    Alright, two things:
Rose is better than Rondo. Don’t think there’s much argument there.
And take this from a huge Phoenix fan: Steve Nash is 36-37 and now has to share ball handling responsibilities with Turkoglu and Dragic. I doubt he’s gonna be putting up the same stuff DRose can put him, who will run that team completely.

  • http://www.acb.com Alan

I really like he wants to get better and work hard. Many above-the-average players tend to take it easy, knowing the will make millions either way. The ones who really push hard and have good mental focus are the ones who we will remenber. And Rose it’s on his path to be remenbered.

  • Red

Dr1 beats D-Will. Dr1 is truly the best PG in the league, now cue the hatred & disgust followed by short bursts of tears. :)

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Eboy, thanks for taking the time to take Lebron’s nuts out of your mouth so that you could type a hilarious comeback. Fact still remains that your team is a bunch of dudes relying on others to win a championship. Drose is trying to better himself so that he doesn’t have to call on his buddies for help.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

And he’ll wind up a perreniel loser…..like you. Go the f*ck away.

  • All Day

D-Rose, don’t make your case to the media…prove your case on the court, son! Chicago is only going to go has far as you take them.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Eboy you’re like a 50 yr old dude that checks the site daily to see if you can pick a fight with any 13 yr old that mentions the Heat. Take your own advice and do everyone on the site a favor. It was much better when you were gone.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Derrick Rose doesn’t fit the criteria for the Steve Nash pass. If Chris Paul couldn’t get it, then Derrick Rose sure as hell can’t get it.
    Sorry.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t see how you can say that the Heat are a bunch of guy relying on each other like that’s a negative.
    THAT’S A FREAKING TEAM!
I’m sorry, that’s just horrible logic. Like, I’m laughing as I type this because that’s so bad.
Relying on other guys is soft. Like all of the previous NBA champions did it all by themselves.
    Ridiculous.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Allenp – obviously you have to rely on your teammates to win. I was referring to lebron’s saying something along the lines of “I chose Miami because there’s less pressure on me there.” I take that as him saying he didn’t want to step up and be the leader. DRose is stepping up and people are knocking him for it. He’s out there as the sole face of the team. Lebron had that in Cleveland and chose to go to Miami cause he couldn’t handle it.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Diesel
Do you have a direct quote with context of Lebron saying he went to Miami because he couldn’t handle the pressure?
I mean, dude did it for seven years and took the team deep in the playoffs several times.
I can’t imagine what else he had to do to prove he could handle the stress of being the face of a franchise. Seems like he switched teams because it gave him a better shot to rings. Now, some folks don’t like that, and I understand the impulse, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a leader, or wasn’t a leader, or couldn’t handle the pressure.
That’s not based on the facts.

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

I could type out something, but at this point, I’d rather just retype what Allenp said:

I’m not searching for the quote but he said it. He said he liked not having the pressure to score 30 points a night. To me, if you’re a winner, you want that pressure on you. But lebron is irrelevant at this point. I was trying to make a point to Eboy…who’s on this site praising Lebron every day…but then criticizes DRose when he said he’s working hard to be the best so why couldn’t he be the best one day. I don’t know why folks need to tear someone down for having goals.

  • slick ric

co- sign diesel on the having goals part

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

Diesel: He said he didn’t want to have to score 30 points a night because he’s more a point-forward/distributor and would rather have 10-15 assists.
He was unhappy about his role and what he had to do with the team he had, not that he couldn’t handle scoring 30 a night.
Yer right on the goal part though. No need to bash Rose for his comment.

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

And just for the record, a small time nobody player called Larry Bird pretty much said the same thing as Lebron said.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I read both of Eboy’s initial comments and neither of them was hating.
Nothing in those comments in incorrect or mean-spirited. I don’t get it.

  • Martian

ALright you bastards. Your tellin me that last yr you thought KD was gonna finish 2nd over kobe and dwade? No so shut the hell up. 2. Yall treating the man like he didnt win rookie of the year and didnt make the All-Star team and win a goal medal and lead the bulls 2 yrs in a row to the playoffs avg. this yr 27 and 7 assists? Hes very dangerous as of right now but once his gets a 3pt shot not one person on this earth will be able to keep up. MVP MVP MVP derrick rose

  • hammer

All n due time rose. Just do ur thing. GO BULLS!

  • robert

I think d rose has a chance but not so high this year but next after he gets closer to being fully developed as one of the top all stars he will be I believe he will win it and be the top PG in the league and yeah hes all ready better than rondo so i don’t see why people are still putting him under rondo.

I wish I could sit down with everyone that said it was impossible for him to win this award. MAYBE next yr some of you said. Not with LBJ, KB, Wade, KD, CP3, DWill, DHoward still playing. Some even had the nerve to say that RONDO was better than him…. wipe the egg off of your face
