Erick Dampier’s Many Suitors

Dampier (and more specifically, his contract) is a wanted man these days. From SI: “The Rockets, Raptors, Heat and Suns are among the teams interested in signing free agent center Erick Dampier, multiple league sources told SI.com Dampier, 35, was waived by the Charlotte Bobcats this week. The 6-foot-11, 265-pound Dampier averaged 6.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in 55 games (47 starts) with Dallas last season and 1.0 points in five playoff games. In 13 year, Dampier has averaged 7.8 points and 7.4 rebounds playing with Indiana, Golden State and Dallas. The Bobcats, who acquired Dampier along with Matt Carroll and Eduardo Najera in exchange for Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca, released Dampier to avoid paying his $13 million salary, which was non-guaranteed for next season. The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday the Rockets extended a two-year, $4 million offer to Dampier. An NBA source said that in addition to Dampier, the Rockets are negotiating with Jazz free agent center Kyrylo Fesenko.”

I don’t know that I want to live in a world where there is a bidding war over Erick Dampier.

Is it just me or is there way too much interest in Dampier? We didn’t want him in Dallas and now everyone wants him? Have they seen him play? I realize that its all about the (unguaranteed) money but c’mon. He isn’t going to give you much of anything. No more “daps for Damp.”

ldr4- because you got a 30 year old 2.0 version in Haywood to replace him. Thats why you didnt need him. You would still take him for the vet min.

It’s hard go from a $13M contract to a 2 year $4M deal, but I guess that’s the market. I wonder if he’ll go to the highest bidder, where he’ll be able to play the most, or where he’s most likely to win a ring.

  • PapaBearATL

$4M is a whole lot better than $0M!!! I wouldn’t call an offer like that a ‘bidding’ war. Teams just trying to fill gaps and if you can get a battle tested veteran for next to nothing, why not?

  • JTaylor21

Damn, you avg. 1 freaking point in the playoffs and have teams fighting over your services.

I think it’s fair that there a bidding war over Dampier at minimum salary. But 2+ mill? No way!
