Gilbert Arenas Willing to Take Backseat to John Wall?

The WaPo is hearing that Gil is in great shape, and for the time being, sounds ready to share the spotlight with his rookie teammate:  “Arenas is taking on a different role with the Wizards this season, with the arrival of John Wall forcing him to become a complementary star. How Arenas will respond to the attention Wall receives is still a concern to some within the organization, but but a team source says he genuinely respects the talents of the 20-year-old point guard. He also seems to have changed his attitude about playing for the Wizards after meeting with Leonsis and speaking with/playing with Wall in the past month. Multiple league sources report that Arenas is back in much better shape than he was at this time last year, which makes sense because he is another year removed from his third knee surgery. He’s slimmer after packing on a few pounds in the days leading up to his sentencing and he also had another summer working under Tim Grover in Chicago. From talking to people, that 50-game suspension was probably a blessing in disguise since it forced him to get the rest he needed since he was unnecessarily pushing his knee beyond the limits last season, according to sources, for the sole reason of trying to prove that he was back … With Wall running the show, Arenas will be freed from the burden of balancing making decisions for the team and going for his. Now, Arenas can simply focus on scoring, which plays more into his natural instincts. With Arenas moving to shooting guard, he also won’t have to worry about defending the quicker point guards in the league, ones like Tyreke Evans, who gave him so much trouble last season. Yes, the 6-foot-4 Arenas will have to contend with shooting guards who are much taller and stronger, but those bigger guards will also have to deal with him on the other end.”

Politically, what choice does he have? Arenas is lucky he still has a career —–> http://clicky.me/7lz

Tyreke Evans is quick?? I always thought of him as more of a crafty player……

  • JMac

    wow, nobody cares

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Gilbert’s gunning for a big year this coming season.

  • Hussman25

Yeah he had to pack on his Diesel pounds before going upstate/halfway house. But honestly does he have a choice other than playing the mentor to the new star?

  • JTaylor21

IF Gil can at least get back to 85-90 percent of the old Gil, the wizards will give a lot of teams MAJOR problems, still won’t make the playoffs though.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

he´ll take a backseat and while Wall´s running da point, zero will sneak into the lockeroom and sh1t on the rookies shoes..hhahaha

  • arjae828

    gil > j.wall !!!

Combo guard backcourt is fashionable like the split backs in football.

  • Jas

Tyreke Evans is not quicker than Arenas.

  • Hussman25

You’re right he’s not quicker. He just plays offense better than Gil plays Defense. Ha ha

If somebody steps up and claims the starting PF gig (ahem — Andray Blatche, I’m looking in your direction) and McGee progresses the way he has over the last calendar year, yeah this could be a 7 or 8 seed. Big man rotation’s really feast or famine for them, they might end up having nobody they’re really nuts about putting out there against a good frontcourt, or they might have three long athletic guys (McGee, Blatche, Yi) and two change-of-pace bangers (Booker, Seraphin — though with those two it’s probably going to take some patience and we may actually be talking about next season for Seraphin). But the backcourt, if Arenas can hit those jumpers without coming off the dribble, and with the flexibility to put 3 intense-if-undersized defenders back there, that backcourt is going to be nice.

Hmmm… In a perfect world, Gilbert gets traded to the Knicks in the middle of the season a la Earl Monroe to eventually form a tenacious big three of Melo, STAT, and Gilbert…They’d likely be dubbed, Run MSG – I potentially see lots of swooping and hooping. Dishing and swishing. Poasting and toasting. Shaking and baking. BOOK IT!

  • Love4Humanity

If Javale McGee continues to improve, this can be a solid up and coming team. He’s a freak athlete. We all know about Wall. Arenas can give you about 20 points a night. Nick Young must improve as well. Josh Howard and Al Thornton, this can be an alright team.

The NBA needs gil back, it would be so much more entertaining.

  • Nashty

Only a matter of time when a Chinese shoe company picks him up……

@airs That’s right baby! I GLAD Gilbert is back. I feel that suspension allowed his body to HEAL even more. AND I swear, I wouldn’t say this if I didn’t mean this. I’m GAY for Gilbert Arenas. *SMH*

  • JoeMaMa

if he doesn’t sh*t in Wall’s shoe, I’ll lose all respect for him.

  • Hussman25

Slam has to fix this problem w/ people posting under other’s names… I was on Lunch and seen 2 posts from “me” abt this… SMH

  • hammer

Yeah right! Pleez! Gilbert aint no miss daisy 2 b takin a back seat. He wants 2 b danny glover. That’s the way arenas is/was/will b. He’s 1 of those cats with “Big Ego’s” like dr.dre said

I think the beauty of it all is, with this move to the SG position, Gilbert AND Wall can both get theirs. I can see Gil getting something like 22 ppg, 5 apg, 4 rpg while Wall getting something like 17 ppg, 7 apg, 3 rpg. Now those are solid numbers for both of them, there should be no jealousy on either guy’s part.

  • Realist*

Haha, it should have read like this…

“With Arenas moving to shooting guard, he also won’t have to worry about defending the quicker, stronger, and taller point guards in the league; ones like Tyreke Evans, who is 6’6″ & 228lbs, who gave him, and every other superstar on every other team, so much trouble last season.”

That would’ve been much more accurate. But seriously now, the author had to choose the biggest, strongest & most crafty PG in the league to try and make his point? Note for future reference… Don’t use the Lebron James of the PG position to make comparisons to a washed up Agent Zero. Speaking of Zero… aahhh, nevermind.

  • Jelte

Gilbert is ready to be traded. China?

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

Gil will get 24 ppg. Wiz have best backcourt in league, gil, wall, kirk. When no1 pick is ur weeakest link, ur great. Then they have josh howard, al thornton, blatche, javale and yi. Will make playoffs, gil will be allstar……… They still have nick young

I’m surprised my man DP hasn’t gotten on this post yet. First of all, Wall hasn’t proven himself yet. The kid’s 20! If I’m the Wizards, Wall is taking a backseat to Arenas before he proves that he can hang with the big boys.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

LETS BE HONEST FOLKS, Wall needs to prove himself, in College Wall was good, but not great. Cousins will be the best player of the draft and if Gilbert takes a back seat to Wall, they will suck. BOOK IT!!

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

Let’s all not forget how much of a headcase Blatche can be, and now that he’s gotten a taste of the limelight, I don’t think he’ll fall in line as easily with a rookie claiming this team is his team. I for one see a locker room disaster. Can Wall assert his ownership of this team being as inexperienced as he is? How will the massive egos react to it (Blatche + Arenas)? Will Josh Howard get over himself already in his 7th sophomore season? Will all thes clash with the devolepment of the Wiz’s crop of young talent (Young & Mcgee)? And in the middle of all this is a lame duck coach who has shown he doesn’t command the authority in the locker room to hold players accountable. I hope for the best, but frankly, like theSeed said, this team has a lot to prove to the doubters.

  • Seven Duece

Folks keep forgetting how he was right back to his old form, when the trouble happened last year. As much as people are talking about Wall, he still doesn’t have the talent that Gil has.

  • http://www.manutd.com t-money

gil guarding 2-guards is going to be an absolute disaster. listing him as 6’4 is laughable. i stood next to him, he’s 6’2. tops.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

^^ which is why I thought they were getting Kirk for. He’s probably one of the best combo-guard defenders in the L, when they got him I was thinking “Ok it looks like they’re definitely getting rid of Gil to make way for Wall now”. Because it really doesn’t make any sense for someone of Hinrich’s defensive ability to come off the bench. I guess the wizards were trying to shop him in the offseason, it either got drowned out by the Decision nonsense or they never really got any sensible deals for him. Just my 2 cents.

  • dmoore

wall should take back seat to arenas, wtf has wall done in his nba career yet, nothing, arenas is healthy and had had an impressive career, the rookie has to earn his starting spot

  • C-Mac

people who think arenas will fail at playing sg should remember when the sixers swicthed AI to sg. That’s when they had their best success. Neither AI or Gil are pgs

  • dsleepy

i love my wizards and i’m torn about having gil on the team at all. on the one hand he’s got so much talent and he’s hilarious. but on the other hand, his immaturity doesn’t make him a true championship-caliber leader. i just hope his antics dont teach john wall to be a goofball as well.

  • Jordan D

They can def be on the court at the same time in certain situations. I mean Agent Zero is a scorer anyway, he maybe under sized but I’d play him at the two and watch him light up the score board. With Wall at the helm he can free up alotta open looks for the hibachi
