Greg Oden: ‘Is There Any Proof That I’m a Bust?’

In spite of seemingly unending injury concerns, the newly focused Oden — he says he’s stopped partying and drinking so much — insists that he’s no bust. From the Oregonian: “Oden had a checkup with doctors last week and was told his knee was structurally sound. Besides one vacation to Mexico, Oden said he went through rehabilitation five days a week throughout the summer in Indianapolis, his hometown. Coaches, trainers and Cho visited him at various points, and the organization is not only pleased with his offseason work and but also still views him as a long-term championship piece. ‘No question; no question,’ McMillan said. ‘He’s a big part of this team. He’s a huge part of who we are and who we want to become.’ Perhaps he biggest dilemma facing Oden as training camp approaches is using patience and good judgment. His heart is urging him to play, but his knee — and the Blazers — are forcing him to wait until his body is 100 percent ready. Oden was adamant, however, that this restraint should not be confused for lack of desire or passion. His motivation is unyielding, he says, and Oden takes exception to those who claim he’s a bust three years and 82 games into his career. ‘Is there any proof that I’m a bust?’ Oden said. ‘All there is proof of is that I have bad luck with injuries. When I was out there on the floor, I think I did pretty good for myself. I’ve never really had enough time to play and actually improve. I think last year at the beginning of the year I did OK, started to head down that path. Unfortunately I had an injury. But I’ve prepared myself all summer to be an All Star and be as healthy as I can be and I’m going to keep doing that until I’m able to do that.’”

    Kwame Brown career:6.7ppg 5.4rpg 0.6bpg in 22mpg
Greg Oden career:9.4ppg 7.3 rpg 1.4bpg in 22mpg so DYCE I think you should put that comparison to rest dude.

some of y’all are idiots. can KD average 30 and 7 if he only played 82 games his first 3 years? And can you really conclude someones carreer with that amount of games played? Darko’s been given a chance, so as Kwame, Olowakandi etc. but can you say that to Greg? Morons.

The main thing is that Greg hasn’t achieved much. There is an expectation that comes with being the 1st pick in the draft (and being compared to one of the all time greats). It comes down to this: As a body of work, his playing career isn’t looking anything like the foundations for a solid legacy as a star in the league. Sam Bowie 2.0

    Kwame, Olawakandi, Darko, Oden….

Like I said, Oden is gonna be one of the better centers in the L in a few years.. He’s just been unlucky these 1st couple years.. I’d still take him over alot of these other young centers..

Ya’ll are ridiculous, how you gonna call a dude a bust when he’s barely had time to play a full season?

A bust is somebody that has been given all the chances and couldn’t make anything of himself.

Look at Kwame Brown, wit the Wizards, Lakers, Memphis and the Pistons. All teams that needed him to step up and he folded, Oden has been with one team and when he was playing he was putting up decent numbers for a guy that’s not offensively gifted.

If I remember correctly, his numbers already match up with Dwight per 36 min, so how lethal would this dude be if he could stay healthy and learn for the next few years?

Don’t take this as Oden/Blazers nut hugging.

I’m a Lakers/Bynum fan so this is speaking from somebody that should be a Oden hater.

The only thing you can say about Oden is that he’s been injury plagued but when he’s on the court he has shown legitimate flashes that damn near any team would love to have on their bench.

Thank you, Savage… Very well said.. (just don’t ask me to ever defend anybody on the Lakers) :)

Is there any proof he is NOT a bust???

    L

  • EJ

Um, how about numbers like 1, 9 and 7 for proof?

  • Coggie13

pretty sure KD wouldnt be half the player he is now if he had gone to portland and been second to brandon roy. dude would have been on a leash.

    ….tumbleweed…awkward cough…

Just because there is no precedent for a player sustaining these types of injuries (damn shame about em) and still reaching his potential, doesn’t mean that it can’t happen. The future is still bright for Oden, he just has to work hard, be patient, and do him.

blake griffin is a bust. his number from last year are very, very low. pretty much zeros across the board.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

But BLAKES efficiency is off the charts. He hasn’t taken a shot that he couldn’t miss…

  • dfizz

The only thing holding Greg back is his lack of minutes and injuries. He played only 23 minutes a game last year and had 11 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game. A bust is something whose skill set doesnt live up to their potential, so basically someone whos not good but got drafted high. Greg Oden, on the other hand, is a very good player and top 10 center when healthy, maybe even higher than top 10. Put Oden against Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic, and Michael Olowakandi and he’ll dominate against them, and that is fact.

  • Mike Mihalow

Dude should have stayed at Ohio for another year or two.

  • mrbust

poor him, he was busted by his knee and his face

  • Elvis Freshly

He’s a bust for being that ugly.

  • BostonBaller

I would have picked KD in the draft but I wasn’t mad at or blamed Portland for grabbing GO. You don’t get a chance at a legit center every year BUT he was hurt during his only college season. Portland should think twice about any center they want to draft b/c of the Bowie curse. Bowie over Jordan and now Oden over Durant. DAMN, what bad luck. He still has a chance to be good or better.

  • huhkno

The only evidence of him being a bust is the pictorial evidence online.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

dfizz – Sure 23 mins a game… so he’ll dominate for the first 7 buckets in a game of 21 and then have to sit out?… Darko – THAT was one guy who was taken hugh, never given a run by detroit and it wrecked him psycologically….

  • ClydeSays

Oden hasn’t played enough to be labeled anything but ‘chronically injured’.

As for the draft, the lure of a big man who can play (or just walk) is too tempting for any GM or franchise. Kwame? Darko? Olowakandi? Sheldon WIlliams? Patrick O’Bryant? Chris Mihm? Mike Sweetney? All Top 5 or Top 10 picks in the last decade of drafts…
