Greg Oden: ‘Is There Any Proof That I’m a Bust?’

In spite of seemingly unending injury concerns, the newly focused Oden — he says he’s stopped partying and drinking so much — insists that he’s no bust. From the Oregonian: “Oden had a checkup with doctors last week and was told his knee was structurally sound. Besides one vacation to Mexico, Oden said he went through rehabilitation five days a week throughout the summer in Indianapolis, his hometown. Coaches, trainers and Cho visited him at various points, and the organization is not only pleased with his offseason work and but also still views him as a long-term championship piece. ‘No question; no question,’ McMillan said. ‘He’s a big part of this team. He’s a huge part of who we are and who we want to become.’ Perhaps he biggest dilemma facing Oden as training camp approaches is using patience and good judgment. His heart is urging him to play, but his knee — and the Blazers — are forcing him to wait until his body is 100 percent ready. Oden was adamant, however, that this restraint should not be confused for lack of desire or passion. His motivation is unyielding, he says, and Oden takes exception to those who claim he’s a bust three years and 82 games into his career. ‘Is there any proof that I’m a bust?’ Oden said. ‘All there is proof of is that I have bad luck with injuries. When I was out there on the floor, I think I did pretty good for myself. I’ve never really had enough time to play and actually improve. I think last year at the beginning of the year I did OK, started to head down that path. Unfortunately I had an injury. But I’ve prepared myself all summer to be an All Star and be as healthy as I can be and I’m going to keep doing that until I’m able to do that.’”

    Bust.

  • JTaylor21

Um, do I have to spell it out for you. When you’re anointed as the second coming of Bill F*cking Russel and picked over KD but avg. only 9ppg, 7rpg, 1.4bpg, you’re a BUST. The proof’s in the pudding.

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

SMH…. G.O doesn’t have a clue. Your a bust cause you can’t stay healthy enought to develop your game. Your a bust cause you took that lame a$$ pic of yourself.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

I think in order for you NOT to be a bust as the number 1 pick you need to show proof that you’re not. You’ve got it backwards big man.
I hope you can stay healthy and show us what you can do.

  • underdog

Isn’t he still eligible for the ROY award?

  • The Philosopher

I so worry for this kid’s career.
For what it is worth, he is revealing that he has pain in that knee. I think he’s caving.
Athletes are not supposed to let us “see them sweat”. Very telling to me.
If I were to give him advice I would urge him to take this year off.

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

Joe Smith was a number one pick, and he’s a bust no doubt about it but at least he could stay on the court. G.O would be lucky to have Joe Smiths career !

  • Hussman25

He’s on the cusp of being a bust, but I cant blame the Blazers for picking him either. He passed all test they game him when they drafted the kid and didnt have any reason not to pick him #1. Things happen (some call it fate, destiny or bad luck). The team picked for need not the best player available. Blazers didnt need KD @ the time. They still dont necessarily need him. In my opinion this pick could be even worse than Bowie. Greg was already anoited as the next great Center in HS… Bowie was a very good player in his day, but nothing to the point of being anointed the next…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Can you imagine if the Blazers drafted Durant? *smh*

  • t-sizzle

they shouldn’t have drafted an old man..

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Greg, I’d keep partying and drinking. It’s really the only thing you’re going to get out of this NBA thing.

  • NDP

Danny Ainge is the only GM on record saying he would’ve taken KD at #1. Regardless, Oden has been a HUGE bust — and he’ll be up for an extension this summer.

  • chazz michael michaels

there is too much proof that this dude is a complete bust like beasley’s dumb ass

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@chazz michael michaels: Beasley still has a chance to be great. He just needs to get his head screwed on right – I’d rather deal with that, than a Big who physically keeps breaking down.

the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.

oh wait, you say there’s evidence? oh, carry on then.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Well, I think dude should play a full season before making that statement. I like Greg Oden’s game, but being injury-prone has hurt his value a lot.

  • JoeMaMa

What people forget is that he played one year of college. This is what, his 4th year as a pro, so basically, had he stayed in school, this would be his first year in the league. Let’s just give him a clean slate and act like he’s new to the league. No one should be written off so young. Let’s not hate so hard. Oh, and anyone who says KD should’ve been picked first will need to back that up with a written statement, dated before the GO/KD draft, saying the same thing. Otherwise, no one wants to hear you. Even you. And especially me.

  • abaci

It’s way to early to say he is a bust, he is what 22, 23 ? But for him to say “Is there any proof that i’m a bust?” he sounds really delusional.

  • CONEY ISLANDER

HERE’S A TEST GREG, GO TO NBA.COM AND LOOK UP DWIGHT HOWARD’S #’S. YOU MY MAN ARE A BUST AND A HALF!

  • $am

He’s a bust until he’s proven innocent. He’s gotta go out & show us, that’s the only way. 9 and 7? Really? You’re the no.1 pick (ahead of KD no less, Portland’s mistake not Oden’s but still)and don’t even average double figures? Give me a fuckin break.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    Uhm…

  • $am

    9 and 7? Really? Sounds like a bust to me. Try KD’s 30 and 7 ; )

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

He is so limited offensively and it showed in college unlike Duncan who people compared the guy to. I never understood why he went first. Me and my cousin predicted the Blazers would regret picking Durant the night of the draft.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

    co-sign Bryan Crawford

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Once his career is over, then it’s fair to say he’s a bust or not. He’s obviously has been disapointing to this point, but he’s young enough to recover and big enough to be dominant. It’s doubful he’ll have a KD type numbers, but only a handfull of guys do. IF healthy, and he gets some consistent playing time, then we’ll see.

  • vtrobot

someone tell shaun livingston that he’s busted. grant hill has always been sort of busty too.

  • Ged23ai

Very negative views give g.o. A chance to prove himself If he didn’t have those him and kd would lead in points and rebounds respectiively I hope he does come back good luck Greg :)

  • unrel

@Shanoooo… i wouldn’t call joe smith a bust.. outside of high school standout, KG.. that whole draft was filled with solid role players.. no true superstars.. i know you’re talking of #1 picks.. but ed o’bannon was the bust in that draft..

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

^ Speaking of Ed O’Bannon… Is he still sueing the NCAA ???

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Greg Oden is the NBA’s version of Benjamin Button.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Ok grampa, when will you be playing his season? Exactly, bust.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negative kreep

@BC: Greg Oden plays like he looks…55.

  • Justin

Has a number 1 pick ever been waived?

  • All Day

Greg you’re showing bust-like tendencies…meaning you’re not a bust, but you’re showing signs and symptoms of being a bust.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Per minute Greg Oden is a top 5 center in the NBA. Other then injuries he is in no way a bust.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh and everyone that judges Greg Oden’s production by his average is beyond ignorant. Just wanted to point that out. He has never played “#1 Pick Minutes” so LOGICALLY you should figure out that he won’t have “#1 Pick Production” Then again if your not logical this whole paragraph will seem like German

  • FEARtheDEER

not really a bust yet, 11 8 and 2 in 2 quarters is pretty good. but if he keeps getting injured at his current pace(82 games in 3 seasons damn) hes bound to end up as a bust. i really see him averaging 14 14 3 IF he can stay injury free and cut down his 8 fouls per 48 minutes

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    agreed ^^

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Gramps could never avg 14 boards. Get lucid. And no justin, but no2 has been sent down to the dleauge

  • doyouwantmore

Greg, you’re a great guy from what we can tell, but the evidence that you’re a bust is the way you busted.

  • hammer

Oden does have a point. And I’m not saying this just cuz I’m a blazer fan. U need 2 b on the court 2 show if ur a bust or not. He hasn’t been able 2 play a full season healthy. We STILL do not know what he is capable of. I never considered him the next russell and people r idiots if they ever thought that or believed them experts who said that. I hope he gets healthy and stays healthy. GO P-TOWN!

  • unrel

he needs proof?.. okay.. forgive the numbers if they’re off… but.. 3 years in the league.. 82 (+6 playoff) games played… you’re a bust.. HOWEVER.. you can still salvage your career and be a great, great center….. if healthy..

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Unlike most of the comments I’ve read, I for one believe in this guy, I think he will prove all the haters wrong and in 5 years from now, be one of the top 5 centers in the L.. Durant may have a better career and be more of a house-hold name, but when its all said and done, I think he will have a satisfing career..

  • rich

i saw him partying at the hardrock in vegas by the pool. his knee looked fine

  • thefroh

I’m glad to hear he has stopped partying so much. Here in Portland, it’s kind of a running joke how he is always out at the clubs hollering at the ladies-even before the dong pics came out.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

11/8/2.5 blocks in 23 minutes…23,1 PER! Dwight Howard is a 24 PER…its all about health haters!

What the hell do you guys expect Greg to say? You want him to admit that hes a bust and retire from the NBA at 22? He barely averages 22 minutes a game. He at least needs to play 30 minutes a game and THEN you guys can call him whatever you want.
