Allen Iverson to China?

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

According to something called The Hoops Market, Allen Iverson might be heading to China to continue his career. The Hoops Market reports…

The 35-year-old guard is in talks with Foshan (the new name of Shaanxi) for the next season, according to sources from the Chinese team. Iverson, still a free agent after not signing a contract with any NBA team, would have a “strong desire” to play in the CBA.

So there’s that. No quotes on the record from anyone, least of all Allen Iverson, so probably worth taking this not just with a grain of salt but an entire shaker.

But just in case, for what it’s worth, according to Google Translate, the word practice is pronounced “Shíjiàn” in traditional Chinese.

Bring Iverson to Greece. I’m serious now. If no NBA team wants him I’m sure some of the teams here would love to have him in their roster.

  • Joel O's Posted: Sep.12 at 11:15 am
Well. How bad this news is depends on whether you view the Chinese league as, well, the exile for NBA has-beens (that it is). I don’t know how to feel about how AI’s last season played out. The circus in Memphis, and then the injured/ineffective time he had with the Sixers did not help him. No doubt a wannabe contender type could use him as a sixth man to push them over the top, but it’s a team chemistry gamble I don’t think many teams would want to take.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.12 at 11:19 am
THANK YOU, Lang for not using the Taking his talents line. Also this just goes to show that AI still thinks that he’s good enough to start and is going to the only league that will let him.

  • CARTEL Posted: Sep.12 at 11:23 am
That’s a nice pay day for A.I….tax free money…that’s a reason Steph decided not to re-sign with Boston…If Steph could do it, A.I damn sure can make this into a good situation for himself…

  • JD Posted: Sep.12 at 11:51 am
wow CBA is like a dumpster for unwanted NBA vets, lol

  • total scrotal implosion Posted: Sep.12 at 11:58 am

  • abaci Posted: Sep.12 at 12:40 pm
He needs to accept the fact that he is no longer a starter if he wants to play in the NBA

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.12 at 12:53 pm
    Can’t even make the euroleague…

  • aidee333 Posted: Sep.12 at 1:11 pm
ppl hate on ai in the us maybe he will get more love in the cba hope 2 see his highlights on espn.

  • aidee333 Posted: Sep.12 at 1:20 pm
for get the nba they act like ai is a monster or zombie they need 2 let ai show he can still play and when he goes and avg’s 30 ppg in the cba they will wont him back yall haters will see

  • Overtime Posted: Sep.12 at 1:31 pm
I struggle to think of many teams that actually have a reason to not sign him. I cant be bothered to look at each team’s financial situation, but if we ignore that, im really only thinkin of bout 3 teams that have big reasons to not sign him

  • The Philosopher Posted: Sep.12 at 1:42 pm
Y’all should check out the Raymond Lewis thread.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.12 at 2:52 pm
This would be cool for him and China, I’m sure. The fans over there would love him. Imagine Steph vs. AI all over again.
    And co-sign overtime.

  • Stillballin Posted: Sep.12 at 4:34 pm
Damn the greatest little man of all tIme can’t get a job in the NBA!! Some thing is not right…

  • The Black Rick Kamla Posted: Sep.12 at 4:37 pm
He needs to join Marbury’s team…..that would be hot lol

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.12 at 5:39 pm
Wow I never thought I would see this day….. I don’t think any ai fan wants to see him go out like this. There are about 5 teams that could use him right now… Charlotte, New Jersey, Cavs, Atlanta(if Crawford leaves), Toronto and Miami (who would u rather have at point with the big 3 Mario Chalmers or Ai?). If no teams want him he should just retire or wait for some injury and get signed before all-star break.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.12 at 5:59 pm
Charlotte doesn’t want him because Jordan doesn’t want him
New Jersey doesn’t want AI because they want to do bad and get draft picks
Atlanta doesn’t want AI because they are too guard heavy, and don’t have the minutes that AI needs
Miami certainly does not want AI because Wade and Lebron are too ball dominant to have a person like AI on the team at any point.
So that leaves Toronto and the Cavaliers… who both having similar ball-dominant combo guards (Mo Williams and Barbosa)…
So, does AI really have a place in the L?

  • Love4Humanity Posted: Sep.12 at 6:04 pm
I would rather AI retire than play in China. He’s not Marbury. He’s a Hall of Famer. Something is seriously wrong when AI can’t even get a 6th man role on one of these teams. People are scared of him. He should just ride off into the sunset. Hall of Fame career. Best little man to ever play. Never will be another like him.

  • paychexx Posted: Sep.12 at 6:19 pm
There goes HOF….damn son really need to put down the bottle…

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.12 at 6:31 pm
@Jukai: How can Atlanta not have the minutes for AI? I said if Jamal Crawford gets his trade then AI is a good fit because he could play 31 mpg as a sixth man and he said on his twitter at the start of free agency he is willing to accept any role…… It was actually rumored that Miami was talking with AI after LeBron signed with em, AI wouldn’t dare try taking the team over in Miami, he knows he can’t and he respects that LeBron and Wade are better then him, the role AI played with Philly last year was very team oriented, he didn’t really dominate the ball, he ran all the plays and took just 10 shots a game, he play 29 mpg and managed to average 14 ppg a night but he did it for a weak team he could easily play that role with this team and I don’t think Mario Chalmers(who might not attend training camp due to injury)can.

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 6:41 pm
Doesn’t any1 here other than me think AI is getting blackballed here? Seriously. Cuz there r a few scenarios where AI could fit n w/a team we can agree. Charlotte, hawks, nets, spurs mayb. Yet none of those teams or any 4 that matter have even worked AI out. I understand why certain teams would want 2 stay away from AI,but ALL of them? Not even the clips or knicks just 4 ticket sales? C’mon now

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Sep.12 at 7:24 pm
I think it’s pretty obvious to anyone who thinks about it for a second that AI’s ‘character issues’ are the main reason he’s not getting signed. Is this finally enough evidence for all the numbnuts and kids out there to absorb the fact that your attitude and the way you treat people matter? I could be wrong, maybe no one has a need, but come on.

  • J-Ro Posted: Sep.12 at 7:39 pm
@Doyouwantmore- Matt Barnes, Nate Robinson, J.R.Smith, T.J.Ford, etc. All guys with “character issues” who are on NBA rosters. AI can ball better than these guys.

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 7:47 pm
Co-sign jro. Add stephen jackson and josh howard as other guys w/character issues still playing n the L

  • Ged23ai Posted: Sep.12 at 7:59 pm
Ai in china no way here’s a thought stay in Philly or the raptors could sign you
    now they lost chris bosh

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.12 at 8:09 pm
@Hammer: I think he might be getting black balled, a lot of people are starting to think that now…. the one thing that makes me think that is that after AI said NBA Cares was “Fake” on All-Star weekend 2009 he was then sent to the bench for Detroit a week after, that off season nobody wanted him and even Memphis brought him off the bench everything has been downhill since those comments at All-Star break.. maybe that is the reason they black balled him.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.12 at 8:20 pm
Pardeep: I didn’t know Jamaal played 31 minutes…. hell, maybe AI can get a spot on the Hawks. If he’s willing to come off the bench, it really makes sense. Damn. You found a good one.
No way for Miami though. I know you don’t want to hear this, but Chalmers is SUPERIOR for that role. Chalmers is an above average defender and decent spot up three point shooter— two weak points in Iversons mostly spotless skill repertoire. Wade and Lebron are going to dominate the hell out of the ball handling. Miami even passed on Wade’s own Jason Williams cause of that fact. Iverson has no place on the Heat, it really is true.

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 8:23 pm
Yeah. And AI was just calling it as it is. Nba don’t care. All nba cares is about its image it projects. They set aside funds and collabo w/other companys 2 look good 2 the public. Those nba cares commercials u c of nba players reading, smiling or planting trees, much of that isn’t genuine. Its stipulated n their contracts 2 do such things. If it were up 2 the majority of nba players, not all, they wouldn’t bother w/it. So yeah. My sentiments equal urs on the blackballing

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 8:24 pm
@pardeep.Yeah. And AI was just calling it as it is. Nba don’t care. All nba cares is about its image it projects. They set aside funds and collabo w/other companys 2 look good 2 the public. • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 8:25 pm
My bad on the double post

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.12 at 8:38 pm
Also, TJ Ford and Jr Smith are perfect examples of people who have MASSIVE amounts of talent but their character issues have help back their careers.
The main problem is, people no longer believe Iverson about his willingness to accept any role. He didn’t accept his role in Detroit. He didn’t accept his role in Memphis. And while I personally don’t think role had anything to do with it, I bet some GMs still think Iverson left Phili cause he didn’t like the lack of burn he would get.
Iverson also has a negative effect on other young players… no, it has nothing to do with Iverson’s locker room personality. You saw it on Phili— young players idolize Iverson. Hell, I’ve never been too much of a fan of Iverson but I’d kiss his shoes to run a few pick up games with the guy, and I’d probably end up just watching him. Iverson can’t run like he used to, he has to change his game as a vet, and a lot of these young teams still try and give the ball to Iverson whenever they can, they defer smarter shots just to give Iverson his due… it’s not good for a young team.
Iverson’s CAN still be in the L, but he really needs a major game change. It’s more than just working without the ball. Dude’s gotta totally change his game up. Even Gary Payton became a 10 minute bench player.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.12 at 9:03 pm
Also, does it really matter that the NBA is just doing the NBA Cares crap for publicity…? It’s helped countless communities, helped countless families, brought smiles to kids and adults around the world. Doing good, even if you’re not doing it for the sake of being good, should still be commended. I don’t necessarily like HOW much they shove it down our throats, but I don’t think Iverson’s comments were appropriate. How would he like it if I accused all his charity work (which is substantial) to be mostly PR campaigns to improve his image. Most of them probably aren’t, but I bet one or two of them were suggestions by his people after one of his press conferences.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Sep.12 at 9:09 pm
I loved AI’s game and think he can still play well in this L but AI probably thinks he is still an all star and should get all star playing time and money. I think that may be the biggest issue with him signing with an NBA team…then there are the other “reported” issues over the years.

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 9:17 pm
All I am saying is that AI was just being honest bout it. Cuz bottom line or break it down however u want 2,he said the truth. And I commend him 4 that. And that is a reason why AI is being blackballed n my mind. He doesn’t tag along like many of these hypocrite players and its ultimately costing him a job n the L

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.12 at 9:17 pm
Does anyone here think that AI might have talked to NBA teams privately this season and made sure it doesn’t leak, maybe he demanded certain things? more money? more playing time?

  • hammer Posted: Sep.12 at 9:34 pm
@ pardeep. High unlikely n this day and age where everything somehow and eventually leaks out

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.12 at 11:21 pm
Co-sign Jukai about the NBA Cares thing. I mean, it’s still worth something even if it’s a PR stunt. I seriously h@te when people rag on celebrities for donating MILLIONS of dollars to charities because they’re just “doing it for attention.” Who gives a f*ck! People need that money and if it goes towards a good cause, kudos to them.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.12 at 11:50 pm
hammer- those guys you mentioned are all 33 or younger. AI is 35. He had a job at 33 too.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.13 at 12:00 am
Hammer: Iverson would f*cking either cry or punch me in the mouth if I said his charity was a PR stunt. He’s being honest but he’s also being a hypocrite.

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.13 at 12:22 am
I don’t think Iverson’s charity is a PR stunt man, if you look at the way this guy talks in interviews and stuff he always talks about GOD and how he tries doing the right things yes he does lie about accepting any role in interviews which he shouldn’t do but as far as the charity thing I think he does it for real, because we never hear of it either he doesn’t take cameras with him.

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.13 at 12:26 am
Here is everything Iverson said about his charity when he said NBA cares was fake(this is from an article).. “Fake,” said the 10-time all-star who plays for the Detroit Pistons. Iverson went on to say that he prefers the cameras not be around when he helps others less fortunate than him. “I just look forward to doing it. I don’t need all the publicity that comes with it. I don’t need that. When it’s time for me to get toward that gate, either He [is] gonna say, ‘Come in,’ or He [is] gonna say, ‘Turn around.’ And a camera won’t decide whether I get in or not.”

  • hushabomb Posted: Sep.13 at 12:37 am
The thoing is that he’s wanting a 2 guard role. And that’s fine if you need 1. Right now the only positions are for PG and he’s not not one. If he truly desires to play in the NBA, he’ll have to play the 1 spot and make a concerned effort to pass and distribute the ball! Only he can change. The Pacers, if they didn’t sign Collison, would be a good fit here

  • Anton Posted: Sep.13 at 1:02 am
Not the chinese food that I go out there and die for!

  • Izzy Posted: Sep.13 at 1:29 am
    China? No.
    Phoenix? Yes.
Bring him to the Suns bench as back-up SG behind J-Rich. Phoenix is lacking little guys that can score. Which is a perfect position to play in the style of offense they play. This guy was a 2 time scoring champ so I say why not. They’ve just signed a heap of lukewarm forwards in an attempt to replace STAT but I think AI could work in the Phx guards department – currently consisting of only Nash, Dragic (both true-type PGs) & J-Rich.
NBA, where is the love for AI???

  • tealish Posted: Sep.13 at 1:41 am
    I hope this doesn’t happen.

  • Jono Posted: Sep.13 at 2:04 am
Seeing the way he is, he should go. His legacy as one of the all-time greats is secured in the NBA. Eating crap leftover in whatever NBA team he’ll sign for will result in him sulking and tarnishing his image again. Just go to AI, they’ll love and embrace you like no other. Trust me. Earn some dough, experience a new culture, be treated the way you want to, build your brand and practice whenever you feel like.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.13 at 2:19 am
I do NOT want AI on Phoenix.
We have Nash, the best on-ball point guard next to Chris Paul and Deron Williams in the LEAGUE. Then we have Dragic, who is as pure of a point as they come.
Now we have to let Turkoglu control the ball just so dude can score.
No way do we need AI f’ing using the ball too. No damn way.

  • The Big Fundamental Posted: Sep.13 at 7:30 am
He really needs to swallow his pride and accept the fact he wont be a starter in the L

  • Yesse Posted: Sep.13 at 8:27 am
Is CBA like the next huge league coming after NBA? Stephon and now Allen. Whos next?

  • rikson Posted: Sep.13 at 9:25 am
“He really needs to swallow his pride and accept the fact he wont be a starter in the L” -> So true! But kind of sad too – I mean buddy is 35 years!!! Time to grow up…

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.13 at 9:34 am
Izzy – PHX need little guys that can score the ball…. probably in much the same way Golden State do…? PHX does not need nor want A.I.

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.13 at 9:41 am
Yesse – Shaq will head there in about 2 yrs as the first team owner/coach/sixthman, Anderson Varejao owns a CBA petting zoo outside Foshan and I think Gilbert Arenas needed somewhere to store his tanks this off season…

can we all pray that david stern suffers a fatal stroke in the not so near future? admit it or not, he’s the guy (devil) behind all this.

  • The Nupe Posted: Sep.13 at 12:07 pm
Maybe a year in China will prove to NBA teams he still has something left in the tank and that he is a more humble player. I really like AI and would love to see him in the NBA, but I also think this is largely his own fault. Teams aren’t wanting to take a big risk on him because of his lockerroom atitude/behaviour. When you’re still a superstar maybe you can get away with a lot more, but now that he’s no longer the elite player he was, he needs to modify how he acts. Yes he’s still got something in the tank, but the extra BS that MAY come along with it is something I understand teams wanting to avoid.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Sep.13 at 1:31 pm
    He’s bad for business.
    Period.

  • jayfromdachi Posted: Sep.13 at 2:25 pm
DAT SUX!!! AI can still compete in da NBA!!! lets keep him here!!!!

  • Hussman25 Posted: Sep.13 at 3:18 pm
    He’s done… period

how easily people forget… @jukai – your suns are dead like michael jackson. welcome to a lottery-filled decade

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.13 at 6:25 pm
I hope SLAM does a EPIC cover with AI in his China jersey…..It would sell like crazy…. It is sad that it has to end this way but AI may just have a cultural impact in China like he did in the US.

  • Izzy Posted: Sep.13 at 6:57 pm
Just saying…Phx need a decent back-up 2 guard. @Jukai – I totally agree that Nash & Dragic have the PG under conrol. Dragic is pure point but not a particuarly consistent scorer. I’m biased cos I like Iverson but I am aware of his downside…still i think someone of his ability wouldn’t hurt the Suns (who aren’t dead at all by the way – lottery bound with Nash at the helm? Dude please).

  • Pardeep Posted: Sep.13 at 7:54 pm
NO the PHX thing wouldn’t work Nash is bad enough on D this back court of AI and Nash would get destroyed and it wouldn’t matter how much they dominate on offense. Even at the peaks of their careers a Nash, Iverson back court would not work.

  • Chendaddy Posted: Sep.13 at 8:23 pm
A.I.’s got plenty left, but he won’t come off the bench. It’s an attitude problem, not a talent problem. Last year, he was a bust in Memphis and a bust in Philly. Guess the only place left where they’ll let him start and be a star is China. He should team up with Starbury and re-create the 2004 bronze-medal winning Team USA starting backcourt. Btw, Frank’s post was Iverson’s practice rant translated into Chinese pinyin.

  • Izzy Posted: Sep.13 at 8:30 pm
@Pardeep…Point taken. Its aaaalways about the D. Aren’t Phoenix’s new acquisitions in Turkoglu, Childress and Warrick a viable attempt to beef up the frontcourt & overall defensiveness of the team? Or only “sounds good on paper”. I still think we need a scoring guard…Jukai? Dacre?
