Jared Dudley ‘Not Optimistic’ About Extension from Suns

Dudley does not expect his employer to re-up his current deal, thereby setting up to become a restricted free agent next summer. From the AZ Republic: “Dudley is eligible for a contract extension through October but the Suns might let him become a restricted free agent after making long-term commitments to Childress and Turkoglu. ‘It would be nice,’ Dudley said of an extension. ‘I’m not optimistic. My mindset is to go out and play my last year and go as far as we can. At the end of the year, I know if we win, I’m going to have a good year. I do a pretty good job of keeping healthy. My goal is to come out and have a better year than last year and have the team better. When a team is successful, everybody usually does pretty well. Look at Channing (Frye). $30 million. Tell him (to) let me get a little bit of that.’”

J-Dud is hugely important to the team and they need to keep him.

I can see not extending all the role players if they’re planning on totally breaking up the Suns and rebuilding, but they’d need to start with dealing Nash. If they’re still rolling with Nash, they need to re-up the guys that hustle, grab boards and hit open 3s. Too bad Isiah isn’t still in the league, or Duds wouldn’t be worried. He’d just get a max offer from Isiah.

I think he will have a role on a wide range of teams with his defensive presence and his three ball; if he can get his assists and his rebound numbers up then he could get himself a nice little contract. With Hedo, Hill, Clark and Childress in town I can see Duds numbers and overall minutes taking a dive however. Perhaps they could trade him through the coming season for a draft pick and a servicable big?

Tell him to let me get a little bit of that too.

Seriously? He’s one of the main reasons that they even bet the Spurs. He was clutch and played good defense. And, he crashed the o-boards hard.

Suns will be fine, just need a low post player, Maybe Frye will have to come inside the 3 point line..

Jared Dudley is TOO GOOD a player for the Suns to keep. I can see him being the one guy other teams will come looking for – he is going to still be their best swing-man off the bench and depending on how much is left in the tank with G Hill; or if Hedo’s romp through the FIBA championships is as good as he will be this season, then you really should look to give Dudley his coming out party this season. PHX, please start DUD.
