Jerry Colangelo on Team USA Selection Process

Colangelo was quick to shoot down Brandon Jennings’ accusation that corporate interests played a role in him not playing for Team USA this summer. From SI: “I’m the one who picks [players]. What somebody wears in the way of shoes or gear doesn’t have any impact on who is selected.”

    Jennings is ridiculous, HE SHOT 37% from the field, and had Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, Billups, Curry, Evans ahead of him…He really thinks hes better than he is, go dance to lady gaga boy, thats to much of an excuse to any smart person to buy.

    he’s not even good enough to warrant an invite?! you guys are trippin’. he was 3rd in ROY voting, right? and what did curry do while out in turkey? not much. at least b.jennings can make plays when his shot’s not falling. Curry was useless when his jumper was off. Ty Lawson should’ve gotten an invite too. can shot, defend, pass. strong to the rack. knows how to run a show. and he’s pretty battle tested. a guy with collegiate pedigree always helps at the guard spot in international competition. in today’s NBA 2 yrs is about as much collegiate pedigree as you’ll get. in fact, i believe all the guards spent two years on the college level with the exception of rose (1) and curry (3).

    No matter what way you slice it, Jennings did not have the numbers to make the team with its ridiculous depth at guard. That being said, Nike fronts a lot of the money for travel, lodging, eating, etc. when Team USA travels. It would be silly to think with all that money flying around they simply have no say at all.

    I think Colangelo has done an awesome job running team USA except when he backtracked on his threats to LeBron. I think he should have stuck to his guns that nobody is bigger than the team. Other than that, he seems to be doing the right thing with the right guys.
